MIAMI (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies pounded the Florida
Marlins 14-2 last night. An intentional walk to Ryan Howard in the
third with a runner at first backfired when the next four hitters
singled. The Phils went on to score five times in that inning.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Houston Astros
5-1 last night and moved four games over .500. Jeff Karstens
allowed one run in seven-plus innings, Brandon Wood homered and the
Pittsburgh Pirates won their third game in a row.
MIAMI (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies say a hand specialist
will examine center fielder Shane Victorino's injured right thumb.
Phillies manager Charlie Manuel says Victorino will most likely
miss some time. Victorino was out of last night's lineup in Florida
for the second straight game.
NEW YORK (AP) - Lawyers for the NFL and the players are meeting
for two days to sort out paperwork that could speed the process in
reaching a new labor contract. A person with knowledge of the talks
tells The Associated Press "the owners will not open the doors
without a signed document in place." That makes the discussions
yesterday and today "important to get done."
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Associate athletic director Ellen Ryan has
announced her retirement from St. Joseph's University. Ryan worked
in the St. Joe's athletic department for 37 years. She was the
school's first women's basketball coach in 1973-74, guiding the
Hawks to a 9-2 record. Her retirement will be effective in August.
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - A western Pennsylvania soldier
posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for saving
four comrades in Iraq will be inducted into the Little League
Museum Hall of Excellence at this year's Little League World
Series. Army Private First Class Ross McGinnnis of Knox died in
2006. He played second base and the outfield for six years in
Little League.
