Karstens needed just 83 pitches to become the first Pirate to win five straight decisions in a season since Matt Capps in 2006.
NEW YORK (AP) - John Mayberry Jr. singled and doubled with the bases loaded to drive in five runs, Vance Worley pitched well enough and the Philadelphia Phillies got off to a strong start
after the All-Star break by beating the New York Mets 7-2 last night. Raul Ibanez contributed a home run and a diving catch in left field for the NL East leaders, who own the best record in the
majors.
NEW YORK (AP) - The Phillies have put All-Star third baseman Placido Polanco on the 15-day disabled list. Polanco has not played since July 4th because of inflammation in his lower back. He is 0 for 15 this month and missed Tuesday's All-Star game.
UNDATED (AP) - Pittsburgh linebacker James Harrison has apologized for using an anti-gay slur to refer to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in an interview with "Men's Journal." He also says his critical statements about teammates were taken out of context.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Former Eagles running back Reno Mahe (MAY'-hee) is facing a criminal theft charge in Utah. Police say Mahe and four others stole more than $15,000 in gasoline from a construction company. The Deseret News reports the 31-year-old was booked into a Salt Lake County jail on Thursday and released pending another hearing. Mahe has said he thought it was OK to take the gas and not illegal.
