PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Roy Halladay bounced back from his shortest
stint of the season to strike out eight in eight innings and lead
the Philadelphia Phillies to a 5-3 win over the San Diego Padres
yesterday. Raul Ibanez and Carlos Ruiz each had two RBIs to lead
the Phils to their fifth straight win.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Roy
Oswalt is scheduled to start a rehab assignment Wednesday for
Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Oswalt hopes he only needs that one outing
before returning to the Phils. He threw a 40-pitch bullpen session
before yesterday's game against the San Diego Padres in
Philadelphia.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Xavier Paul scored on Chase d'Arnaud's
sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th and the Pittsburgh Pirates
beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 yesterday. The Pirates snapped a
three-game losing streak with the win.
COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) - Bert Blyleven has been inducted into
the Baseball Hall of Fame. The first Dutch-born player to be
enshrined thanked his late father and his 85-year-old mother for
the drive and determination he needed to succeed. Blyleven won a
World Series with Pittsburgh in 1979 and Minnesota in 1987.
COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) - Pat Gillick was officially inducted
into the Baseball Hall of Fame yesterday. He became the 32nd
executive to be elected to the Hall and the first general manager
since George Weiss in 1971. Gillick is credited with putting
together the World Series winning Toronto Blue Jays teams of 1992
and 1993 and the 2008 Philadelphia Phillies.
NEW YORK (AP) - A vote on a settlement to the lockout is what
every NFL fan wants. Nobody is sure when that might happen. The
players' executive committee will meet today in Washington after
lawyers have worked through the weekend on issues that are holding
up an agreement with the owners. Several people with knowledge of
the meeting tell The Associated Press no vote to recommend a deal
is certain today.
