DENVER (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies overtook the Colorado
Rockies 4-3 last night for their fourth straight win. Pinch-hitter
John Mayberry Jr. hit a game-tying two-run homer in the ninth
inning and Shane Victorino homered to lead off the 10th.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - First baseman Derrek Lee and outfielder Ryan
Ludwick debuted for the Pittsburgh Pirates last night against the
Chicago Cubs. Both players joined the team just before the trade
deadline as surprising Pittsburgh bolstered its lineup in an effort
to stay in contention in the NL Central.
PITTSBURGH (AP) -The Chicago Cubs beat the slumping Pittsburgh
Pirates 5-3 last night to spoil slugger Derrek Lee's two-homer
debut with his new team. Starlin Castro had three hits and Carlos
Zambrano survived six choppy innings.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben
Roethlisberger has agreed to restructure his contract. The move
will help the team get under the $120.4 million salary cap by
Thursday. Roethlisberger's agent says the restructuring wouldn't
affect the length or the terms of Roethlisberger's current
eight-year, $102 million deal.
LATROBE, Pa. (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers are hoping the NFL's
new rules cutting back the amount of contact during training camp,
will extend the careers of players on their aging defense. The
league has prohibited two-a-day practices during camp and limited
the time players need to be at the team facility in the offseason.
BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to
terms on a four-year contract with first-round pick Danny Watkins.
He's their projected opening-day starting right guard. Terms of the
deal announced last night weren't available. Watkins was the 23rd
pick in this year's draft. He missed the first five days of
training camp at Lehigh University.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley has been
traded from Philadelphia to Denver for a 2013 draft pick. The move
was made two days after the Eagles agreed to send the former
first-round pick to Cleveland. Bunkley had six sacks in 76 games in
Philadelphia. He became expendable when the Eagles signed former
Packers defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins.
BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - Eagles cornerback Asante Samuel is
wondering where he fits in. Samuel reported to Lehigh University
yesterday after missing the first four days of training camp with
an excused, undisclosed personal matter. During that time, the
Eagles acquired Pro Bowl CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie from the
Cardinals and signed another Pro Bowler, Nnamdi Asomugha.
NEW YORK (AP) - NBA talks have started again, and seem to be
going nowhere. Commissioner David Stern says "nothing" gave him
reason for encouragement after a 2 1/2-hour meeting yesterday between
owners and players. It was the first meeting since the lockout
began a month ago.
