PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins selected defenseman Simon Despres of the Saint John Sea Dogs in the first round of the NHL draft. The Penguins made the 6-foot-4, 205-pound Despres the 30th overall pick. Anaheim and Philadelphia also made news during the draft, announcing that veteran defenseman Chris Pronger is going to the Flyers. The Ducks receive right wing Joffrey Lupul, Luca Sbisa (LOO'-kuh suh-BEE'-suh), the 21st pick in tonight's draft and a first-round pick next year. Anaheim made the deal after learning last night that Scott
Niedermayer says he intends to return next season. A Ducks spokesman said the team hopes to sign Niedermayer to a new contract soon.
TORONTO (AP) - Ricky Romero held Philadelphia hitless for six innings and Aaron Hill hit a two-run double in the Toronto Blue Jays' 6-1 victory over the Phillies. The rookie left-hander gave up a hit to Chase Utley leading off the seventh and Jayson Werth followed with an infield single for the Phillies.
TORONTO (AP) - Phillies left-hander Cole Hamels was ejected from yesterday's game against the Blue Jays for arguing balls and strikes with plate umpire Mark Carlson. The ejection came after Hamels was removed for right-hander Chan Ho Park with two outs in the fifth.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Virgil Vasquez went six innings for his first major league win and the Pittsburgh Pirates got home runs from three unlikely power sources in a 5-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals. Vasquez allowed two runs and four hits while striking out seven.
