WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Wednesday
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Pedro Martinez made his home debut for the
Philadelphia last night as the Phillies beat the Arizona
Diamondbacks 5-1 last night. The three-time Cy Young Award winner
allowed one run in 3innings in his second start since returning to
the majors. Jamie Moyer pitched six scoreless innings in relief.
Both teams return to the diamond tonight.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ross Ohlendorf won his 11th game of the season
beating the Milwaukee Brewers 5-2 last night. Ohlendorf allowed
only one run over seven-plus innings. Delwyn Young and Lastings
Milledge homered for the Pirates as Pittsburgh won for only the
fifth time since July 24. The Pirates and Milwaukee finish out the
series tonight.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick
will not travel with the team for their preseason game at
Indianapolis. Vick is not eligible to play in Thursday night's
game. Vick is allowed to travel, but coach Andy Reid does not
usually bring players who will not play. Vick can play in the last
two preseason games.
LATROBE, Pa. (AP) - No doubt the Pittsburgh Steelers'
quarterback is circling this date: Oct. 25, Ben Roethlisberger vs.
Brett Favre. Big Ben was surprised upon hearing yesterday that
Favre is coming out of retirement for a second successive season,
this time for Minnesota. The Vikings travel to Pittsburgh during
the seventh week of the season.
LATROBE, Pa. (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers running back Mewelde
Moore remains out with the hamstring injury that has kept him from
practicing since Aug. 4, although coach Mike Tomlin said he is
getting closer to returning. Moore is certain he will be ready for
the Sept. 10 opener against Tennessee.
