PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Cole Hamels pitched a two-hitter, Ryan
Howard drove in the only run with a fourth-inning double and the
Philadelphia Phillies beat the San Francisco Giants 1-0 last night.
Hamels struck out nine and walked one in his fourth career shutout
and second this season. The Phillies take on San Francisco again
tonight.
CINCINNATI (AP) - Craig Tatum drove in four runs to double his
previous career total and Justin Lehr overcame control problems as
the Cincinnati Reds sent the Pittsburgh Pirates to their sixth
consecutive loss, 11-5 last night. Jonny Gomes had three hits and
Paul Janish and Kevin Barker also drove in two runs. The Pirates
finish out the series this afternoon.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Joe Paterno will start another
milestone season where he's spent most of the past six decades: on
the Penn State sideline. Paterno is entering his 60th season at
Penn State - 16 as an assistant and 44 as the head coach. The Hall
of Fame coach says he's excited after spending most of last season
in the press box with a sore hip.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pitt Panthers will be trying to make up
for all the yardage they lost when their most proficient
underclassman running back turned pro after only two seasons.
LeSean McCoy now plays for the Philadelphia Eagles. So the Pitt
Panthers are largely relying on Dion Lewis and Ray Graham. The
Panthers open up Saturday against Youngstown State.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Former IBF lightweight champion Paul Spadafora
will fight in Pittsburgh for the second time in about three months
on Sept. 30.No opponent has been named for the fight, which will
headline a card at the VIP tent at Heinz Field, the home of the
Pittsburgh Steelers.
