PITTSBURGH (AP) - Andrew McCutchen made up for a defensive gaffe
earlier in the ninth inning by hitting a game-ending two-run homer
off closer brad Lidge. That allowed the Pittsburgh Pirates to beat
the Philadelphia Phillies 6-4 last night. The battle of
Pennsylvania teams continues tonight in the steel city.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Outfielder Jeff Salazar has cleared waivers
and was sent outright by the Pittsburgh Pirates to Triple-A
Indianapolis. Salazar was designated for assignment on Aug. 15
after going 1 for 23 with seven strikeouts, mostly as a
pinch-hitter.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Michael Vick will make his preseason debut
for the Philadelphia Eagles tomorrow night. It's unknown how much
Vick will play against Jacksonville. Vick is eligible to play the
next two preseason games, but not in the regular season. NFL
commissioner Roger Goodell will consider Vick for full
reinstatement by no later than Week 6.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ben Roethlisberger is practicing for the first
time since injuring his right foot during the team's final training
camp practice.Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Roethlisberger will
play in Saturday night's exhibition game against Buffalo and
"won't be limited in any form or fashion."
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - In the Little League World
Series, Peabody, Mass., used a nine-run third inning yesterday to
pull away from Russellville, Kentucky, in a 12-3 win. Austin
Batchelor homered and scored three runs.
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Travis Daves and Wyatt Willis
each hit two-run homers to lead San Antonio, Texas past Chula
Vista, Calif., 6-3 last night at the Little League World Series.
Texas stayed undefeated and will play Staten Island, N.Y., in one
U.S. semifinal tonight, while California gets Warner Robins, Ga.,
in the other semifinal tomorrow.
