WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Wednesday

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Tonight is Game 5 of the National League
Championship Series and the Philadelphia Phillies are just one win
away from closing out the Los Angeles Dodgers. If the Phillies win,
it would be the second straight year that they secured a berth in
the World Series. The defending champions are sending Cole Hamels
to the mound to start tonight.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Matt Cooke had a goal and an assist, four
other Pittsburgh players scored and the Penguins earned their sixth
straight win by beating the St. Louis Blues 5-1 last night. Only
five of Pittsburgh's 18 skaters failed to record a point in the win
that pushed the Penguins' record to an NHL-best 8-1.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Mike James made two of three free throws
with 0.3 seconds remaining to lift the short-handed Washington
Wizards to a 90-89 preseason victory over the Philadelphia 76ers
last night. Randy Foye scored 17 points for Washington. Andre
Iguodala scored 19 points for the Sixers, who have lost two of
their last three games.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles have acquired
linebacker Will Witherspoon from the St. Louis Rams for rookie wide
receiver Brandon Gibson and a fifth-round pick in 2010. Witherspoon
is an eight-year veteran who spent his first four seasons with
Carolina. He was the Rams' starter at the weakside spot this
season.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin says
Jeff Reed will play in Sunday's home game against the undefeated
Minnesota Vikings despite criminal charges against him. Reed is
charged with simple assault, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct
and public drunkenness for allegedly scuffling with Pittsburgh
police outside a bar near Heinz Field.
