night in Pittsburgh. Chris Kunitz, Tyler Kennedy, Steve Sullivan,
Evegni Malkin, Pascal Dupuis and Jordan Staal scored for the Pens.
Marc Andre-Fleury stopped 24 shots in goal.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Claude Giroux had two goals, backup Sergei
Bobrovsky made 23 saves and the Philadelphia Flyers beat the
Montreal Canadiens 3-1 yesterday. Jakub Voracek also scored for the
Flyers, who got all of their offense in the second period.
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - Shawne Alston rushed for two
second-half touchdowns, including a 1-yarder with 6:10 left, and
West Virginia came from 10 points down to beat Pittsburgh 21-20
last night. West Virginia sacked Tino Sunseri 10 times, including
four on Pittsburgh's final drive, when time ran out on the
Panthers.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Khem Birch had 15 points and 10 rebounds,
Ashton Gibbs scored 16 points and Number 17 Pittsburgh pulled away
late against pesky Penn for a 78-58 win in the Philly Hoop Group
Classic last night. Zack Rosen led the Quakers with 22 points on 6
of 10 3-pointers. Tyler Bernardini had 14.
MILWAUKEE (AP) - The Big Ten Leaders division title is on the
line today when the 20th-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions visit
Number 15 Wisconsin this afternoon. The Lions are looking to
salvage a season ravaged by the off-field child sex abuse scandal
that cost legendary coach Joe Paterno his job. The winner of this
game plays Michigan State for the Big Ten title in Indianapolis
next week.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Already expected to be without LaMarr Woodley
for tomorrow's game in Kansas City, the Steelers have added All-Pro
linebacker to their injury report. James Harrison was a limited
participant in yesterday's practice due to a back that underwent
two surgeries this offseason. Unlike Woodley, Harrison is listed as
probable against the Chiefs and is expected to play.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Bernard Pierce ran wild in the second half
Saturday and finished with 189 yards and three touchdowns in
Temple's 34-16 victory over Kent State in Mid-American Conference
play. The Owls have won eight games or more for three straight
seasons for the first time in school history. With its third
straight victory, Temple is bowl-eligible for the third straight
season.
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Jordair Jett scored 19 points, and Saint
Louis used its long-range shooting to beat Villanova 80-68
yesterday in the semifinals of the 76 Classic. Saint Louis hit 14
of 27 3-pointers. Kyle Cassity made four 3s and Cody Ellis had
three.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Velton Jones scored 14 points to lead Robert
Morris to a 51-44 victory yesterday over La Salle in the Philly
Hoop Group Classic at the Palestra. Jones was 4 for 15 from the
floor for Robert Morris. Sam Mills was the only Explorer in double
figures with 15 points.
NEW YORK (AP) - Ex-Flyers star Eric Lindros and former Rangers
great Brian Leetch are expected to play in the Winter Classic
Alumni Game on New Year's Eve in Philadelphia. The Flyers' alumni
roster also includes John LeClair, Mark Recchi and Rick Tocchet,
and will be coached by Pat Quinn.
