STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Thousands of Penn State students and others held a solemn candlelight vigil outside the university's administration building to honor former football coach Joe Paterno. The gathering was held outside Old Main last night, several hours after Paterno died of lung cancer at a hospital.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Penn State football coach Joe Paterno would have been a dramatic witness at the upcoming trials of his former assistant and two university officials. But legal experts say his death will have little effect on the criminal and civil cases stemming from the Penn State child-sex scandal.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Retired Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky says Joe Paterno's death is a sad day. Sandusky faces child sex abuse charges in a case that led to the firing of Paterno. Sandusky says in a statement no one did more for the university's academic reputation than Paterno, who died Sunday

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Two officials facing charges in the Penn State child sex abuse scandal are offering their condolences on the death of Joe Paterno. Penn State athletic director Tim Curley and retired vice president Gary Schultz issued statements yesterday through their attorneys.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Cody Zeller scored 18 points and Number 11 Indiana rallied for a 73-54 victory over Penn State yesterday, hours after the Nittany Lions learned of the death of former football coach Joe Paterno. The team was told of Paterno's death on the short bus ride from the hotel to Assembly Hall.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Alex Bentley scored 21 points and Number 22 Penn State beat Iowa 68-52 yesterday, hours after longtime Nittany Lions football coach Joe Paterno died of cancer. There was a pregame moment of silence for Paterno, the winningest coach in college football. The Lady Lions also sported black bands on their uniforms as a tribute.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Evgeni Malkin pounded home a rebound 1:31 into overtime to lift the streaking Pittsburgh Penguins to a 4-3 victory over the Washington Capitals yesterday. Malkin banged a long carom off the end boards past Washington's Michal Neuvirth for his 26th goal of the season. He's the NHL's leading scorer.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Tyler Seguin scored the decisive goal in a shootout and the Boston Bruins beat the Philadelphia Flyers 6-5 yesterday. The Northeast Division-leading Bruins haven't lost in regulation in Philadelphia since March 10th, 2007, going 9-0-1. The defending Stanley Cup champions are tied with the New York Rangers for first place in the Eastern Conference.

EASTON, Pa. (AP) — C.J. McCollum scored 26 points, including 12 straight in the second half as Lehigh pulled away from Lafayette en route to a 90-76 Patriot League win yesterday. The Mountain Hawks, coming off a 68-61 loss to Bucknell, have won three of their last four and matched last year's win total with nine games remaining.
