PITTSBURGH (AP) - Sergei Gonchar is a fixture on the point for
Pittsburgh Penguins power plays. He scored the winning goal during
a third-period advantage and put the Penguins within one game of
the Detroit Red Wings in the Stanley Cup finals. Pittsburgh trails
2-1 in the series entering tonight's game.
SAN DIEGO (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies took their sixth
straight with a 5-1 victory over the San Diego Padres last night.
Ryan Howard hit a two-run homer off Chris Young and reliever J.C.
Romero pitched in his return from a 50-game suspension for testing
for a banned substance. The Phillies continue the road swing in Los
Angeles tonight.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates game versus the New
York Mets was postponed by rain last night. No makeup date has yet
been announced, but the two teams have another scheduled game this
afternoon at 12:35. New York's Mike Pelfrey is scheduled to face
the Pirates' Ross Ohlendorf in a matchup of right-handers.
SAN DIEGO (AP) - Reliever J.C. Romero is back with the
Philadelphia Phillies following his 50-game suspension for testing
positive for a banned substance. Romero earned earned two wins in
Philadelphia's World Series victory over Tampa Bay last year. He
was suspended after testing positive for androstenedione.
ATLANTA (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates sent All-Star center
fielder Nate McLouth to the the Braves for three prospects. It's a
move deemed to beef up Atlanta's offense in hopes of contending in
the NL East. The 27-year-old McLouth set career highs with a .276
average, 26 homers and 94 RBIs. The Braves desperately needed more
offense from their outfield.
