STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno will return to the sidelines today when the No. 9 Nittany Lions host Akron in the season opener. The 82-year-old Paterno coached the final seven games of the 2008 season from various press boxes. That's because he was ailing from a hip he hurt while trying to boot an onside kick in practice.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State University police have charged redshirt freshman Michael Zordich with driving under the influence and underage drinking in connection with a traffic stop. An athletic department spokesman said he was not aware of any change in status with the team for Zordich. He is a backup linebacker who turns 20 in October.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles have released tight end Eugene Bright, linebacker Curtis Gatewood and defensive tackle Willie Williams. The Eagles now have 72 players on their roster. All teams must reduce their rosters to 53 players by 6 p.m. this
evening.

HOUSTON (AP) - Wandy Rodriguez struck out seven in seven innings and drove in two runs with a double to lead the Houston Astros to a 7-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies last night. Cliff Lee struggled for the second straight start after his eight-game winning streak ended. The Phillies tonight continue their weekend series in Houston.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ryan Ludwick homered twice, Adam Wainwright became the majors' first 17-game winner and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 14-7 last night for their 10th win in 12 games. Last-place Pittsburgh lost its eighth straight despite a six-run fifth inning. The Pirates host St. Louis again tonight.
