WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Friday

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Michael Vick picked up where he left off
last year and then quickly took a safe seat on the sideline. Vick
threw for 74 yards and a touchdown pass in his only series and the
new-look Philadelphia Eagles beat the Baltimore Ravens 13-6 last
night in their preseason opener.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Things could get messy tonight when the
Washington Redskins host the Pittsburgh Steelers in their preseason
opener. The NFL lockout kept teams from holding offseason
conditioning sessions, minicamps and other workouts. Usually by now
most everyone is in football shape and well versed in the play
books. Not this year.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to terms
with former New York Jets wide receiver Jericho Cotchery. The Jets
released the seven-year veteran last week. Cotchery gives the
defending AFC champions some needed depth at wide receiver behind
Mike Wallace and Hines Ward.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State coach Joe Paterno is back
at practice after spending nearly two days at a hospital following
a blindside hit by a receiver during drills. And one of the first
questions Paterno had for his son - assistant coach Jay Paterno -
was about the quarterbacks. Sophomore Rob Bolden and junior Matt
McGloin are jostling for the starting nod.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - New Pittsburgh coach Todd Graham hasn't
coached a down with the Panthers yet, but he's already put his
stamp on the program. Graham is overseeing renovations at the
team's football complex on the city's South Side, and there isn't a
detail that escapes him. The former Tulsa coach sees the facility
as an extension of the energy he's trying to bring to the Panthers.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Big Ten volleyball teams that already had
to contend with superpower Penn State year after year now get to
look forward to playing a Nebraska team that's second in all-time
wins and owns three national championships. Russ Rose, coach of the
four-time defending national champion Nittany Lions, picks newcomer
Nebraska to win the league this fall.

DALLAS (AP) - Bill Lively, who led the North Texas Super Bowl
Host Committee and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, will return to
his alma mater. The University of North Texas has announced the
appointment of Lively as vice chancellor of strategic partnerships.
Lively was president of the host panel for the February 6th Super
Bowl at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. Green Bay defeated Pittsburgh
31-25.
