LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Los
Angeles Dodgers 5-3 last night. Roy Halladay became the NL's first
15-game winner, and Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins each drove in two
runs to help with the win.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Philadelphia Phillies center fielder Shane
Victorino is appealing a three-game suspension. Major League
Baseball suspended Victorino for his role in a weekend brawl at San
Francisco. He also faces a fine. Victorino can continue to play
until the appeal process is complete.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates snapped a 10-game
losing streak with a 5-0 win over the slumping San Francisco Giants
last night. Charlie Morton and Jose Veras combined on a six-hitter,
Ryan Ludwick hit a pair of RBI singles.
BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean
Jackson has ended his holdout and reported to training camp.
Jackson joined his teammates at Lehigh University yesterday, though
he didn't practice in the morning. The two-time Pro Bowl pick wants
a new contract. If he hadn't reported by today, he could've lost a
year of service time toward free agency.
LATROBE, Pa. (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Hines Ward was
taken off the physically unable to perform list yesterday after
being cleared by doctors to join his teammates following offseason
thumb surgery. Asked how he felt at training camp, the 14-year
veteran said "Not bad for a 35-year-old guy."
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State says coach Joe Paterno is
undergoing medical tests on his right arm and hip at a hospital
after a player ran into him during practice Sunday. The school says
Paterno walked away from the collision with a receiver who was
running a route.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - New Pittsburgh coach Todd Graham says he
doesn't believe it's going to take a year for the Panthers to
adjust to up-tempo style. Graham says he promised the team's
seniors, Pitt will win right away. The Panthers are coming off a
tumultuous offseason that saw the program go through four head
coaches in the span of a month.
