STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Former Penn State football stars and others paid tribute to Joe Paterno in a huge campus memorial service that exposed a strong undercurrent of anger over his firing. Paterno's son Jay received a standing ovation when he declared: "Joe Paterno left this world with a clear conscience."

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A national poll shows falling support for the decision by Penn State trustees to fire the late Joe Paterno. The Seton Hall Sports Poll released yesterday indicated that 42 percent of respondents polled nationwide support the football coach's firing. That's down from 55 percent in November.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Maggie Lucas had 23 points and eight rebounds to help No. 18 Penn State beat Michigan 77-56 last night. Alex Bentley had 18 points and eight assists, and Nikki Greene added 13 points and 11 rebounds to help the Lady Lions win their fifth straight. Penn State players had "JVP" patches, a tribute to former football coach Joe Paterno, sewn to their jerseys.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) — C.J. McCollum had 24 points and 14 rebounds as Lehigh pulled away from Navy in the second half of a 71-60 win, earning its 16th victory and tying last season's win total. The Mountain Hawks pulled 10 games over .500 in the regular season for the first time since 1988.

MIAMI (AP) — An attorney for the NFL says former players should not be allowed to sue for damages over concussions they suffered because player safety issues are governed by the league's collective bargaining agreement. NFL lawyer Beth Wilkinson says there are now 21 lawsuits filed in six states by more than 300 former players over head injuries. A federal judicial panel held a hearing yesterday in Miami on whether to consolidate the lawsuits before a single judge for pretrial matters. The leading choice is a judge in Philadelphia, where the first lawsuit was filed.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A Ukrainian hockey coach charged with fondling a teen player in Philadelphia is due in court today. Federal authorities will seek to detain 48-year-old Ivan (ee-VAHN') Pravilov (PRAH'-vuh-lahv). An indictment charges Pravilov with taking a 14-year-old Ukrainian boy from Delaware to the coach's Philadelphia apartment this month and fondling him. His public defender Mark Wilson isn't commenting on the charges.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — NASCAR officials say Pocono Raceway founder and chairman Dr. Joseph Mattioli has died. He was at 86. Bob Pleban, the vice president of administration at Pocono Raceway, says family members informed him that Mattioli died yesterday at the Lehigh Valley Hospital Center in Allentown. Mattioli founded Pocono Raceway in the early 1960's and ran the speedway for more than four decades with his wife, Rose. They retired last year.
