STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Thousands of students, alumni and fans took to the streets in and around Penn State to say goodbye to Hall of Fame football coach Joe Paterno. They lined the route of the funeral procession and watched in silence as the hearse carrying his casket drove by. Paterno died on Sunday at the age of 85, about three months after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Deron Williams scored 34 points, including a go-ahead 3-pointer with 26.8 seconds left in overtime, to help lift the New Jersey Nets to a 97-90 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers last night. Lou Williams led Philadelphia with 17 points.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Penguins are heading into the All-Star break as the hottest team in the league. They've won seven straight. The team is playing so well coach Dan Bylsma cancelled practices scheduled for yesterday and today as a gift to his team after putting together its longest winning streak in more than a year.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Jared Sullinger had 20 points and 13 rebounds, and Number 4 Ohio State took advantage of Penn State's slow start to roll to a 78-54 victory last night. The Nittany Lions paid tribute to Joe Paterno by wearing black bands on their jerseys.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Ashton Gibbs scored 22 points — including 14 straight during a late first-half run — as Pittsburgh beat Providence 86-74 last night to end an eight-game losing streak. Trayvon Woodall added 17 points and nine assists in his second game back from groin and abdominal injuries as the Panthers won for the first time in five weeks.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Ronald Roberts scored 22 of his 27 points in the second half and Saint Joseph's rallied to beat Dayton 77-63 last night. Dayton led 32-27 before Saint Joseph's fought back to tie the game 43-all behind a Roberts layup.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark is heading to Hawaii. The 10-year veteran will replace injured Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed in this weekend's Pro Bowl. Clark led the Steelers with 100 tackles this season. He will join quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, kick returner Antonio Brown and linebacker James Harrison on the AFC team.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers nose tackle Chris Hoke is retiring. The 35-year-old spent 11 seasons with the Steelers after originally signing with the team as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Brigham Young in 2001.

CINCINNATI (AP) — The Reds acquired infielder Wilson Valdez from the Philadelphia Phillies for minor league pitcher Jeremy Horst yesterday, another move to add depth to their bench. The Reds also announced they had signed utility player Willie Harris, a free agent from the Mets.
