WASHINGTON (AP) - The Pittsburgh Penguins are in the Eastern
Conference finals for the second straight year. Sidney Crosby led
last night's 6-2 victory over the Washington Capitals with a pair
of goals. The Penguins next play the winner of tonight's game
between the Boston Bruins and the Carolina Hurricanes.
WASHINGTON (AP) - Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Sergei Gonchar
returned to the lineup for Game 7 against the Washington Capitals
after missing time with a knee injury. Gonchar hadn't played since
leaving Game 5 in the first period Friday after a knee-to-knee hit
from Alex Ovechkin.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Adam LaRoche became the first player to have a
home run taken away by video replay, but it didn't prevent the
last-place Pirates from beating the Cardinals 5-2 last night. The
Pirates got enough help from Ross Ohlendorf's two-hit pitching over
six innings. Pittsburgh goes for the three-game sweep tonight.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Randy Wolf dominated his former team and
James Loney homered and drove in four runs pacing the Los Angeles
Dodgers past the Philadelphia Phillies 9-2 last night. Wolf spent
his first eight years in Philadelphia, leaving after the 2006
season. The series concludes this afternoon in Philadelphia.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia Phillies manager Charlie Manuel
asked Joe Torre to be part of the National League coaching staff
for the Midsummer Classic in St. Louis on July 14th. The managers
of the two teams that play in the previous World Series are the
All-Star managers. Each gets to pick two managers to serve as
coaches.
