MIAMI (AP) - Unbeaten rookie J.A. Happ won again, and so did the
Philadelphia Phillies. Happ allowed five hits in seven innings, and
the Phillies extended their longest winning streak since 2006 to
eight games by beating the Florida Marlins 5-0 yesterday. The
Phillies are at home tonight to open up a series against the
Chicago Cubs.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Matt Cain held the Pirates to one run over
seven innings to outpitch All-Star replacement Zach Duke, and the
San Francisco Giants, saddened by the death of their part owner
earlier in the day, ended an offensive slump by beating Pittsburgh
4-3 yesterday. The Pirates open up their series at home with the
Milwaukee Brewers
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates badly need a reliable
starting pitcher. Despite Ian Snell's stellar statistics at
Triple-A Indianapolis, it apparently won't be him. Snell has a 0.34
ERA in four starts since being demoted June 25, but the Pirates
don't plan to recall him because of his apparent reluctance to
return to the majors.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates have cut off contract
talks with shortstop Jack Wilson and second baseman Freddy Sanchez
after the player didn't respond to multiyear offers. This increases
the chances the double-play duo will be traded before the season
ends.
