PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Joe Blanton pitched into the eighth inning, Jayson Werth drove in two runs on the same day he was named to his first All-Star team and the Phillies beat the Pirates 3-2 last night.

NEW YORK (AP) - Jayson Werth has become the latest Philadelphia Phillies outfielder to make the National League All-Star team. Werth was added to the roster Friday to replace injured Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran. The first-place Phillies have three outfielders on the NL team for Tuesday night's game in St. Louis.

HOUSTON (AP) - The Houston Astros have claimed backup catcher Chris Coste off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies. The 36-year-old Coste will join his new team Saturday. Coste hit .245 with two home runs and eight RBIs in 45 games for the Phillies this season. He made 98 starts for the Phillies last year.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - Cristie Kerr strung together three birdies on the front nine in a round of 1-under 70 to take a one-stroke lead over Paula Creamer after two rounds of the U.S. Women's Open in Bethlehem. Kerr, the 2007 Women's Open champ, had one of only six rounds under par on the tough Saucon Valley Country Club layout Friday.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed defenseman Jay McKee to a one-year contract. The team announced the move Friday. McKee had one goal and seven assists and 44 penalty minutes for the St. Louis Blues in 69 games last season.

CHELTENHAM, Pa. (AP) - A San Diego Chargers running back from Philadelphia is hospitalized after being shot early Friday in his car at a suburban intersection. A hospital spokesman says 23-year-old Curtis Brinkley is in stable condition in the intensive care unit at Albert Einstein Medical Center. Brinkley signed with the Chargers as a free agent out of Syracuse.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State can count a second top quarterback prospect among the school's 2010 recruiting class. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports Robert Bolden of Orchard Lake, Michigan, has made a verbal commitment to Penn State for 2010Penn State also has a commitment from Paul Jones, who had surgery this week for a broken ankle that he suffered during a basketball game.
