PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Pedro Martinez has agreed to a $1 million,
one-year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies. The team put the
three-time Cy Young winner on the 15-day disabled list with a
shoulder strain. Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. says he
has confidence Martinez will be ready to pitch in two or three
weeks.
MIAMI (AP) - Following the All-Star break, the Philadelphia
Phillies return to action tonight. They are in south Florida to
take on the Marlins just after 7 this evening.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Penguins will raise the Stanley
Cup championship banner before their Oct. 2 game against the New
York Rangers, their last season opener at Mellon Arena. The
Penguins will play each Atlantic Division opponent six times and
each Western Conference team at least once. They will face Stanley
Cup finalist Detroit twice.
BOSTON (AP) - The Philadelphia Flyers will play the Boston
Bruins in the NHL's Winter Classic at Fenway Park on New Year's
Day. The NHL made the announcement at the major league's oldest
ballpark yesterday. The outline of a rink will be laid out over the
field. The center faceoff circle will be in the area of second
base.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Tyler Yates has
undergone right elbow surgery and will miss the rest of the season.
Yates, out since mid-May, isn't expected to resume throwing for
five to six months. His status for the start of next season is
uncertain.
