PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Pedro Martinez is returning to the major
leagues. A source tells the Associated Press that Martinez has
agreed to a $1 million, one-year contract with the Philadelphia
Phillies. Martinez can earn up to $1.5 million in incentives. He
will need to make at least a few starts in the minors before he's
ready to join the Phillies.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Baseball's All-Star game once again went to the
American League, as they beat the National League 4-3 in St. Louis.
Ryan Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies grew up in the Gateway
City. Howard had a chance to give the National League the lead in
the eigth inning. But he struck out on a check-swing, with men on
second and third base.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - President Barack Obama was true to his word: He
didn't bounce it. Obama's ceremonial first pitch at the All-Star
game barely reached the plate. St. Louis Cardinals star Albert
Pujols helped the president, reaching out to scoop the toss.Obama
had warmed up on the White House grounds and was determined his
pitch would reach the plate on a fly.
