WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Thursday
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Lou Williams scored 17 points, and Andre
Iguodala and Thaddeus Young each had 16 to lead the Philadelphia
76ers to 105-100 win over the Atlanta Hawks last night. The Sixers
opened the fourth quarter on a 25-6 run to send the Hawks to their
second demoralizing loss in two nights.
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (AP) - Philadelphia pitcher Roy Oswalt has
been hit behind the right ear by a line drive off the bat of Manny
Ramirez. The Phillies say Oswalt had a neck bruise but did not lose
consciousness. The team says he was not dizzy before leaving
yesterday's game 4-1 loss to Tampa Bay. X-rays turned up negative.
BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) - Hunter Pence homered for the first time
this spring and had three hits before leaving in the fifth inning
with a cut that required stitches, and the Astros beat the Pirates
10-6 Wednesday. Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run homer for the
Pirates.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Flyers have signed forward Matt Read to
a free agent contract that begins at the start of next season. The
24-year-old Read was team captain during his senior season at
Bemidji State University.
DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - It's Duke vs. the Big East in the regional
semifinals set to get started this weekend at Temple University's
Liacouras Center in Philadelphia. The Blue Devils are the lone
outsider in a four-team regional field that includes three Big East
schools: DePaul, Georgetown and powerhouse Connecticut.
STORRS, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut guard Caroline Doty will have a
bit of a homecoming during the regional semifinals of the NCAA
women's basketball tournament in Philadelphia. Doty starred at
Germantown Academy in high school, which is located in suburban
Philadelphia.
