DETROIT (AP) - James Neal scored the only goal in the shootout,
and the Penguins pulled out a 5-4 victory over the Red Wings after
blowing a four-goal lead last night. Pascal Dupuis had two goals
and an assist to help Pittsburgh build its big lead. Tyler Kennedy
put Pittsburgh ahead 4-0 at 13:16 of the second period, ending
goalie Jimmy Howard's night.
TORONTO (AP) - Penguins forward Matt Cooke has been suspended
for the remainder of the regular season and first round of the
playoffs by the NHL for elbowing Ryan McDonagh of the Rangers in
the head. Pittsburgh has 10 games to play in the regular season so
the suspension will be a minimum of 14 games.
CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - Roy Halladay looked ready for opening
day and beyond, pitching into the eighth inning to lead the
Philadelphia Phillies past the Boston Red Sox 4-1 yesterday. The
reigning NL Cy Young Award winner flirted with a rare spring
training complete game. He held the Red Sox to one run and five
hits before being relieved by Ryan Madson in the eighth.
CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - The Phillies have signed three-time
All-Star second baseman Luis Castillo to a minor league contract.
Castillo will report to camp as a non-roster player and compete for
playing time while five-time All-Star Chase Utley recovers from a
right knee injury. Castillo hit .235 with Mets in 86 games in 2010.
BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) - Joe Mauer had two hits and an RBI to help
the Twins beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-1 yesterday. Pirates
starter Paul Maholm worked six innings, his longest outing this
spring. The left-hander gave up two runs and six hits, walked two
and struck out five. Jason Jaramillo had an RBI single for the
Pirates.
BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) - Pirates left-hander Scott Olsen is no
longer in the starting rotation mix and could begin the season on
the disabled list. Olsen missed the first month of spring training
camp with a strained left hamstring and has struggled in two relief
outings. He has a 15.43 ERA and has allowed seven base-runners in
2-plus innings.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Keisha Hampton made two foul shots
with 4.9 seconds left and scored 19 of her 26 points in the second
half to help DePaul rally from 14 down to defeat Penn State 75-73
in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Lady Lion senior Julia
Trogele had 14 points and 11 rebounds in her final game in Happy
Valley.
PARK RIDGE, Ill. (AP) - With Penn State starting up a Division I
ice hockey program, Big Ten athletic directors are proposing a
men's hockey league that would start competition in 2013-14. There
would be a 20-game conference schedule. A postseason tournament
would determine the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
The proposal will be sent to the Big Ten Council of
Presidents/Chancellors in June.
