PITTSBURGH (AP) - Brad Hawpe's two-run homer was part of Colorado's three-run ninth inning and the Rockies rallied for a 3-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night. Hawpe hit a 1-1 pitch from Matt Capps into the shrubbery beyond the wall in center field wall, scoring Ian Stewart, who led off the inning with a pinch-hit double. It was Hawpe's sixth homer of the season.
WASHINGTON (AP) - It took 12 innings and four-and-a-half hours Friday night for the Philadelphia Phillies to beat the Washington Nationals 10-6. Raul Ibanez delivered a two-run single after Kip Wells, Washington's eighth pitcher, walked the bases loaded in the 12th. That broke a 6-all tie, and Philadelphia tacked on insurance runs with Pedro Feliz's RBI double and catcher Wil Nieves' throwing error.
WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama told the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday that their 2008 World Series run was similar to his winning presidential campaign - both were underdogs. During the team's visit to the White House, shortstop Jimmy Rollins presented
Obama with a jersey and baseball. Obama jokingly asked for Rollins' World Series ring.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia 76ers have interviewed former NBA coach Eddie Jordan for their head coaching job. Jordan met with team president Ed Stefanski on Friday. It was Philadelphia's first interview with a candidate since Tony DiLeo stepped down as coach on Monday and returned to his job as a vice president and assistant general manager.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Flyers captain Mike Richards has had surgery on his left shoulder and will need 10 weeks of rehabilitation. The surgery Friday was on a torn labrum. Last month, he had surgery on his right shoulder. Richards' shoulders had bothered him since training camp and he used anti-inflammatory medication to manage the pain.
