NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE PLAYOFFS

Final Pittsburgh 3 Carolina 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Miroslav Satan and Philippe Boucher scored
their first playoff goals leading the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 3-2
victory over the Hurricanes last night to open the Eastern
Conference finals. Game 2 will be Thursday night following the
first of as many as three two-day breaks in the drawn-out series.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates took advantage of four
Washington Nationals errors - all on routine plays - en route to a
12-7 victory last night. A five-run sixth inning led Pittsburgh to
its third straight win and ended an eight-game road losing streak.
The two teams play again tonight in Washington.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia 76ers say they will
interview Boston Celtics assistant Tom Thibodeau. An NBA executive
with knowledge of the situation says Dallas Mavericks assistant
coach Dwane Casey will also get an interview. The timing for both
interviews was not immediately known.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - James Harrison didn't visit the White House
when George W. Bush was president and he won't join his Pittsburgh
Steelers teammates to visit President Barack Obama. The Super Bowl
champions will take their celebratory trip to Washington on
Thursday.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator
Jim Johnson is taking an indefinite leave of absence while he
continues treatment for cancer. The 67-year-old Johnson was
diagnosed with melanoma in 2001. The team announced after the
season that the cancer had returned and he had a tumor on his
spine.
