Latest Pennsylvania sports:

NEW YORK (AP) - The New York Mets' seven-game winning streak is over after Philadelphia built a 4-to-0 lead in a 4-to-3 win at Shea Stadium last night The Phillies scored twice in the first off Brian Bannister, who was making his first start since injuring his hamstring on April 26th. Ryan Howard drove in a sacrifice fly in the first before adding a two-run homer in the third. Howard leads the National League with 45 homers and 117 R-B-Is. Carlos Beltran accounted for the Mets' scoring with an R-B-I double and a two-run homer. But New York ended an eleven-game home winning streak, which began after a loss to the Phils on August fourth. Randy Wolf gave up three runs and five hits over five innings to move to 3-and-0. Ryan Madson picked up his second save and Bannister dropped to 2-and-1. Bannister surrendered four runs in six innings. The teams meet again tonight.

MOOSIC, Pa. (AP) - Carlos Leon and Josh Kroeger had R-B-I hits in the bottom of the ninth inning, rallying the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons to a 7-to-6 victory over the Buffalo Bisons in the International League last night. Buffalo took a 6-to-5 lead in the top of the inning when Jake Gautreau drew a bases-loaded walk. Before Gautreau's walk, Tim Laker was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Jason Cooper homered in the second inning for Buffalo, which has lost four of its last five games. The series continues tonight.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Roger Clemens won his fourth straight decision and the Houston Astros belted a pair of homers in a 5-to-1 triumph at Pittsburgh last night. Clemens is 6-and-4 this season following his 347th career victory. He gave up a run and six hits over six innings and lowered his E-R-A to two-point-50. Lance Berkman launched a solo shot in the third to put the Astros ahead to stay. Jason Lane added a two-run homer in the ninth to cap the scoring. Brad Ausmus drove in a run and scored twice as the Astros won for only the fourth time in 14 games. Astros outfielder Willy Taveras led off the game with a single to extend his team-record hit streak to 28 games. The loss goes to 5-and-9 Victor Santos, who gave up three runs in six innings. The series continues tonight.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - David Akers kicked three field goals and Jeff Garcia threw a 61-yard scoring pass to Greg Lewis, leading the Philadelphia Eagles to a 16-to-7 victory over the defending Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers last night. Akers kicked field goals of 40, 49 and 52 yards. Donovan McNabb led the Eagles to a pair of field goals before going to the bench. The Steelers didn't get any points during the two series Ben Roethlisberger played. Charlie Batch threw a 23-yard scoring pass to Cedric Wilson for Pittsburgh's only score. Kicker Jeff Reed missed field goals of 50 and 47 yards. Roethlisberger completed nine of 14 attempts for 52 yards and one interception. McNabb went seven-for-nine for 79 yards. He was sacked three times.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Authorities say a man from the Pittsburgh area is at it again, a year after he was accused of impersonating Steelers quarterback and Ohio native Ben Roethlisberger (RAHTH'-lihs-bur-gur). Prosecutors now say 32-year-old Brian Jackson of Brentwood told a woman he was Steelers tight end Jerame Tuman so she'd give him 32-hundred dollars. He's been charged with theft by deception. Last year, Jackson was charged with pretending to be Roethlisberger to get a woman to date him. He was also accused of impersonating Big Ben's backup at the time, Brian St. Pierre. Jackson was sentenced to 30 days in jail after pleading guilty to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - The U-S and International champions will be decided today at the Little League World Series. Columbus, Georgia, will face Beaverton, Oregon, in the U-S final, while Kawaguchi City, Japan, and Mexico meet in the International title game. The winners advance to the championship game tomorrow.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Little League Baseball will implement a new pitch-count rule next season. Organizers hope the change will reduce wear and tear on youngsters' arms. Starting next year, the rules would bar eleven- and 12-year-old pitchers from throwing more than 85 balls a day. The limits will vary with age. Currently, pitchers 12 and under are limited to six innings per week and six innings per game. Inning limits increase with age. Little League's board of directors unanimously approved the change. The regulations are expected to become mandatory.

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Grayce Stotz, the wife of Little League Baseball founder Carl Stotz who also played an instrumental role in the youth organization, died yesterday at 92. Stotz's daughter, Karen Stotz Myers, says her mother died of natural causes. Stotz's death came on the off-day for this year's Little League World Series tournament, and her daughter called it "very fitting." Carl Stotz founded Little League in Williamsport in 1939 and was the league commissioner and served on the board of directors with his wife until 1950, when Little League incorporated. He stayed as commissioner for another five years, then left because of differences with board members over the direction of the organization. Carl Stotz died in 1992.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Jay Heinbuck has been hired as the Pittsburgh Penguins' director of amateur scouting. Heinbuck was formerly the head amateur scout for the New York Islanders. He replaces Greg Malone, a former Penguin who recently took a job with the Phoenix Coyotes. Before working for the Islanders, Heinbuck was an assistant coach and recruiter at Saint Lawrence University. General manager Ray Shero has overhauled the Penguins staff since being hired in May to replace Craig Patrick. Patrick, a Hall of Fame executive, had been the Penguins' general manager since 1989.

Update on the latest in sports:

UNDATED (AP) - There's a new leader in the American League wild-card race this morning. The Minnesota Twins have moved a half-game ahead of the White Sox by pulling out a 5-to-4 victory in Chicago. Jason Bartlett singled home the go-ahead run in the ninth to send the Twins to their eighth victory in eleven games. Torii Hunter hit a three-run homer to put the Twins ahead 4-to-3 in the sixth. Paul Konerko and A.J. Pierzynski homered for the White Sox, who had won two in a row.

The Twins also are within five games of first-place Detroit in the A-L Central after the Tigers lost to Cleveland 4-to-2. Rookie Jeremy Sowers won his third straight start by holding the Tigers to two runs over six innings. Victor Martinez, Shin-Soo Choo and Jhonny Peralta had R-B-I hits in a three-run third that put the Indians ahead 4-to-2. The Tigers have dropped three straight and are just 5-and-12 since August eighth.

Friday's American League schedule also includes Oakland's 9-to-3 blowout over Texas. Barry Zito picked up his 14th win and had a no-hitter until Mark DeRosa led off the eighth with a single. Nick Swisher hit a three-run double and Milton Bradley laced a two-run double while the Athletics were scoring six times in the ninth.

The Los Angeles Angeles stayed five and a-half games behind the A's by beating the New York Yankees 6-to-5 on Mike Napoli's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth. Vladimir Guerrero had three hits, including a two-run double that gave the Angels a 3-to-0 lead.

The Yankees' lead in the A-L East remains five and a-half over Boston after the Red Sox were embarrassed by Seattle 6-to-0. Jake Woods combined with two relievers on a five-hitter as the Mariners dealt the Red Sox their seventh loss in nine games.

Shaun Marcum held Kansas City to a run and seven hits over six innings of Toronto's 6-to-3 win over the Royals. Troy Glaus put the Blue Jays ahead to stay with a two-run single in the first.

And Daniel Cabrera combined with two relievers on a seven-hitter as Baltimore blanked Tampa Bay 4-to-0. Nick Markakis (mahr-KAY'-kihs) hit a pair of sacrifice flies to help the Orioles send the Devil Rays to their eighth straight road loss.

Over to the National League, where the St. Louis Cardinals have reclaimed a one-game lead over Cincinnati in the Central. The Cardinals won a pitcher's duel while the Reds dropped one. Jeff Suppan gave up five hits while pitching into the eighth inning of the Redbirds' 2-to-0 shutout of the Chicago Cubs. Scott Rolen put the Cards ahead with a sacrifice fly before Juan Encarnacion singled home the insurance run.

Matt Morris tossed a three-hitter and supplied a two-run double as San Francisco dumped the Reds 4-to-1. Ken Griffey Junior put Cincinnati in front with his 562nd career homer, but Barry Bonds tied it with an R-B-I single in the first before Shea Hillenbrand homered in the third.

San Diego remains a game and a-half off the wild-card lead after Colorado hammered the Padres 13-to-5. Brad Hawpe (hawp) went 4-for-4 with four R-B-Is, including the tiebreaking, two-run homer in the fifth.

The Los Angeles Dodgers lost a marathon to stay a game ahead of the second-place Padres in the N-L West. Orlando Hudson smacked a two-run homer in the bottom of the 15th as Arizona outlasted the Dodgers 9-to-7. Hudson and Conor Jackson each had four hits for the Diamondbacks, who won despite leaving 21 runners on base.

Elsewhere:
- Roger Clemens earned his 347th career victory by allowing a run over six innings of Houston's 5-to-1 triumph at Pittsburgh. Lance Berkman smacked a solo shot and Jason Lane hit a two-run homer as the Astros won for only the fourth time in 14 games.
- Mike Jacobs doubled twice and had three R-B-I's as Florida rallied from a 5-to-2 deficit to beat Milwaukee 6-to-5. Brian Moehler pitched four shutout innings of relief to lead the Marlins to their fifth straight win.
- And Austin Kearns provided the go-ahead, three-run homer in the seventh to power Washington past Atlanta 7-to-6. Nationals left fielder Alfonso Soriano became the fastest man to collect 200 homers and 200 steals when he swiped second in the third inning of his 929th career game.

UNDATED (AP) - Tiger Woods hit the roof at the Bridgestone Invitational at Akron, Ohio, yesterday, but it had nothing to do with his temper. The defending champ birdied his first four holes en route to a 6-under-par 64 that leaves him 9-under for the tournament, one shot ahead of Davis Love the third. But his most memorable shot might have been on the par-four ninth hole, when Woods pulled out a nine-iron and sent his second shot on a wild journey. It jumped out of bounds, over the flag and past the grandstands before it hit the concrete path, bounced over a balcony and onto the clubhouse roof before landing on the other side. Woods got a free drop because the grandstand behind the green is a temporary immovable obstruction. He settled for a bogey that kept him atop the leaderboard. Woods is fresh off his victory at the P-G-A Championship at Medinah, where he moved into second on the all-time list for major titles.
Adam Scott and Jim Furyk (FYOOR'-ihk) are tied for third at 6-under, one shot ahead of Ernie Els, Kevin Stadler and Lucas Glover.

The Bridgestone is one of two P-G-A events being played this week. The other is at Nevada, where Bob Estes (EHS'-tehs) is the leader heading into the third round of the Reno-Tahoe Open. Estes fired a 7-under-par 65 today to move 15-under for the tournament, one shot ahead of first-round leader Will MacKenzie.

On the L-P-G-A Tour, South Koreans Jee Young Lee and Soo-Yun Kang will be co-leaders going into the third round of the Wendy's Championship for Children in Dublin, Ohio. Both are 11-under-par after 36 holes. Mikaela (mih-KY'-luh) Parmlid and Marisa Baena (by-AY'-nuh) are one stroke back.

The Champions Tour is at the midway point of its final major senior event of the season. Bobby Wadkins shot his second consecutive 5-under-par 67 to take the lead at The Tradition in Aloha, Oregon. Lonnie Nielson was alone in second at 7-under, three shots off the lead.

NEW YORK (AP) - The upcoming U-S Open won't include Venus Williams. The 2000 and 2001 champ has pulled out of the final Grand Slam event of the year, citing a left wrist injury that's sidelined her since Wimbledon. Williams was seeded 30th for the tournament, which gets under way Monday.

UNDATED (AP) - The New England Patriots have told Deion Branch to go long. Very, very long. The Pats have given the holdout wide receiver one week to seek a trade and negotiate a contract with another team. The team's best deep threat has until September first to seek a new team. Branch is scheduled to make over one (m) million dollars this season, the last of his original five-year contract. But he wants a new deal and has refused to report to the Patriots' mandatory preseason minicamp and its ongoing training camp.

In other N-F-L news:
- Tennessee Titans cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones was arrested outside a bar early yesterday morning and charged with disorderly conduct and public intoxication. The police report claims officers saw Jones arguing loudly with a woman outside a nightclub where a rap concert had been held. Police described the 22-year-old Jones as slurring his speech, having bloodshot eyes and smelling strongly of alcohol.
- The Carolina Panthers say outside linebacker Na'il (na-EEL') Diggs sprained his right knee against the Miami Dolphins Thursday night. Diggs had an M-R-I test and is listed as day-to-day after getting injured while playing on the punt team.
- Cincinnati coach Marvin Lewis isn't sure how long he'll let quarterback Carson Palmer play in Monday's game against Green Bay. Palmer will be seeing his first game action since suffering a severe left knee injury during the A-F-C playoffs against Pittsburgh last January.
- Chicago Bears defensive end Alex Brown had to leave last night's game against the Arizona Cardinals with a sprained shoulder. Brown was injured on the game's second play from scrimmage, when he was blocked to the ground by two Cardinals while chasing running back Edgerrin James.

BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) - Kurt Busch has won the pole for tonight's Sharpie 500 Nextel Cup race at Bristol Motor Speedway. He ran a qualifying lap at 124-point-906 miles per hour on the short track to edge Jeff Burton. Bobby Labonte (lah-BAHN'-tee) and Matt Kenseth make up the second row, just ahead of Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin.

NEW YORK (AP) - Nike has suspended its contract with banned sprinter Justin Gatlin. This comes three days after Gatlin agreed to a maximum eight-year ban from the United States Anti-Doping Agency for testing positive for testosterone and other steroids.

DETROIT (AP) - Coming off a rookie season in which he scored 12 goals, Red Wings forward Johan Franzen has inked a three-year contract. The 26-year-old Swede would have been an unrestricted free agent after the 2007-08 season. Franzen made his N-H-L debut last season and led Detroit rookies in games played, points and goals.

PENNSYLVANIA SPORTS

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Alfonso Soriano hit a leadoff homer, Ryan Zimmerman went deep and drove in a career-best five runs and the Washington Nationals beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 6-to-4 last night. Soriano became the third player in major league history to have at least four seasons of 30 homers and 30 stolen bases. Tony Armas
Junior went five and a-third effective innings to even his record at 8-and-8 for the Nationals. Soriano led off the game with his 39th homer and stole his 30th base in the second inning. Only Bobby and Barry Bonds have reached those numbers five times.
Mike Lieberthal homered and had three R-B-I's for the Phillies, who remained two and a-half games back in the N-L wild-card race. Philadelphia has lost two in a row after three straight wins against the East-leading New York Mets. The three-game series continues tonight.

CINCINNATI (AP) - Xavier Nady hit his first home run for Pittsburgh, a three-run homer, and drove in four runs in the Pittsburgh Pirates' 7-to-3 win over Cincinnati last night. The last-place Pirates sent Cincinnati to its third loss in four games. The Reds began the day leading the N-L wild-card race. Nady tied his career high with four hits. He also did it in early August four days after the New York Mets traded him to the
Pirates for Oliver Perez and Roberto Hernandez. Jack Wilson homered for Pittsburgh and Freddy Sanchez raised his league-leading batting average to .351 with four hits.
Ian Snell is 11-and-8 with seven strong innings on the mound for the Pirates. The teams meet again tonight.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers play a home game for the first time since winning the Super Bowl. Pittsburgh takes on the Minnesota Vikings tonight. It is the
first time the Steelers play at home since the end of the last regular season. they were on the road for each of their three A-F-C playoff wins and the Super Bowl. Ben Roethlisberger may not get on the field at all. On Wednesday, he sprained the right thumb he initially hurt late last season, so it seems unlikely he would play. The Steelers are coming off a 21-to-13 loss in Arizona in their first preseason game.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Juqua Thomas has a career's worth of sacks in the preseason for the Philadelphia Eagles. The reserve defensive end has solidified a roster spot with an outstanding performance in three exhibition games. He had two-and-a-half sacks against Baltimore on Thursday night. That raised his three-game total to four-and-a-half. After spending his first four seasons with Tennessee, Thomas signed with the Eagles last summerand finished with 19 tackles in 16 games. Instead of opting for free agency, he re-signed with the Eagles. Now, his emergence more depth on a line that struggled to generate a pass rush last season.

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) - Dustin Pedroia hit a grand slam to lead Pawtucket past the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons 9-to-5 last night, giving the Red Sox a three-game sweep. Pedroia's blast capped a seven-run rally in the fourth inning that gave Pawtucket an 8-to-2 lead. Carlos Ruiz had a two-run homer for the Red Barons.
Pawtucket's Tyler Minges homered off losing pitcher Brian Mazone. The Red Barons open a series against the Rochester Red Wings tonight.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - The Little League World Series is under way, with three teams picking up wins on the first day of games. In the first set of games yesterday, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, beat Beaverton, Oregon, 6-to-1; Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, shutout Surrey, British Columbia, 5-to-0; and Lake Charles, Louisiana,
needed nine innings to beat Columbia, Missouri, 1-to-0. Competition continues today with six games scheduled.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Detroit Tigers coach Lloyd McClendon will be enshrined into the Little League Museum's Hall of Excellence next week, 35 years after putting on one of the top tournament performances in Little League history. In 1971, McClendon hit two home runs in each of his team's two first games for the Anderson Little League team from Gary, Indiana. He hit another homer in the first at-bat of his third game before being intentionally walked in his last three appearances at the plate.
McClendon, who stood an imposing 5-foot-8, played pitcher and catcher. Gary got to the title game, losing 12-to-3 to Tainan, Chinese Taipei, in nine innings. Baltimore Orioles executive Mike Flanagan will also be honored with the William A. Shea Distinguished Little League Graduate Award on August 27th, the final day of the tournament. Flanagan played Little League in Manchester, New Hampshire.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - The University of Virginia will open its new basketball arena for a telecast of the Cavaliers' season-opening football game. The university announced yesterday that the E-S-P-N-U broadcast of the September second game at Pittsburgh will be shown on the video boards at John Paul Jones Arena. U-V-A students will be admitted at 5:30 p-m with a valid student I-D ... and the general public will follow at six. Kickoff is set for seven.

NATIONAL SPORTS

SAPPORO, Japan (AP) - The road to redemption has begun for U-S-A basketball. Carmelo Anthony's 21 points led a powerful opening-game performance in Team U-S-A's 111-to-100 win over Puerto Rico in the World Basketball Championships. The hot-shooting Americans shot 67 percent from the field. The Americans shot 68 percent in the first half in building a 57-to-51 lead over Puerto Rico, a team that has given the U-S-A fits in past international tournaments. U-S-A outscored Puerto Rico 10-to-2 at the start of the second half. That lead grew to 94-to-74 after three quarters before Puerto Rico made it respectable at the end. The U-S-A is looking to regain world dominance in the sport the Americans invented. The U-S is coming off a third-place finish in the 2004 Olympics and a sixth-place finish in this tournament in 2002. There's little rest for the Americans. They next play China early Sunday morning.

SENDAI, Japan (AP) - San Antonio Spurs guard Tony Parker will not play for France in the world championship after being diagnosed with a broken finger. Parker was injured Tuesday during an exhibition game against Brazil in China. France opens the world championship later today against Argentina.

UNDATED (AP) - Free agent Scot Pollard has signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The veteran forward averaged just under four points and five rebounds a game in 45 outings last season for the Indiana Pacers. The Cavs are hoping the six-foot-eleven, 265-pounder will give them more muscle inside.

In another N-B-A note, Alonzo Mourning will return to the Miami Heat next season after re-signing with the team. The seven-time All-Star center averaged seven-point-eight points, five-point-five rebounds in filling the role as Shaquille O'Neal's backup last season.

UNDATED (AP) - The New York Yankees swept a doubleheader with Boston by crushing the Red Sox 12-to-4 and 14-to-11. In the first game, Chien-Ming Wang (wahng) earned his 14th win of the year, while Jason Johnson got the loss. Derek Jeter hit a bases-clearing double in New York's seven-run seventh inning as the Yankees rallied from a three-run deficit to win the nightcap, 14-to-11. The sweep gives the Yankees a three and a-half game lead in the A-L East. This begins a five-game showdown in Boston between these teams.

Washington built a six-run lead in four innings and held off Philadelphia, 6-to-4. Alfonso Soriano hit his 39th home run and stole his 30th base. Ryan Zimmerman went deep and drove in a career-best five runs.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Marion Jones failed an initial doping test at the U.S. national championships in June. That's what people familiar with the results are telling The Associated Press. The five-time Olympic medalist's "A" sample tested positive for a banned performance enhancer at the event in Indianapolis. Testing on Jones' second urine sample has not been completed, the sources told the paper. Jones would only be charged with a doping violation. She faces a two-year ban from track and field if the "B" sample also turns up positive.

ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) - Asafa (A'-suh-fuh) Powell has done it again. The Jamaican sprinter equaled his 100-meter world record at a Golden League meet in Zurich, Switzerland. It's the third time Powell has covered that distance in nine-point-77 seconds. He set the mark in Athens in 2004 and it was equaled by Justin Gatlin in May. Powell matched the mark again a month later in Gateshead. Gatlin did not attend this week's meet after testing positive for doping following a relay race in April. If Gatlin is found guilty, his share of the world record would be stripped.

DALLAS (AP) - Evander Holyfield (HOH'-lee-feeld) began his latest comeback with a second-round T-K-0 over Jeremy Bates, an insurance salesman. The end came with four seconds left in the second round. That gives Holyfield, a four-time heavyweight champion, his first win since June 2002. The 43-year-old Holyfield showed flashes of his old skills in ending a string of three straight losses since his victory over Hasim Rahman (hah-SEEM' RAHK'-mahn). This was Holyfield's first fight in 21 months. Holyfield turns 44 in October but insists: "I am not old."

BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) - David Gilliland is replacing Nextel Cup veteran Elliott Sadler and will be behind the wheel in Robert Yates Racing's Number-38 Ford. The first test for the 30-year-old driver will be Sunday's G-F-S Marketplace 400 at Michigan International Speedway. Gilliland caught everyone's attention in June when he won a Busch Series race with an underfunded team. Gilliland will work with veteran crew chief Todd Parrott, who guided Dale Jarrett to the championship in 1999. Parrott recently returned to the team after a stint with Petty Enterprises.

BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) - Jeff Burton won the pole and spoiled Elliott Sadler's debut for Evernham Motorsports. Sadler had the fastest lap time before Burton knocked him out of the top spot for Sunday's G-F-S Marketplace 400. Sadler, who left Robert Yates Racing to replace fired Jeremy Mayfield, was qualifying for the first time in the Number-19 Dodger on the two-mile Michigan International Speedway oval. The pole was Burton's fourth of the season and the sixth of his career. He enters Sunday's race in fourth place in the NEXTEL Cup standings. Matt Kenseth qualified third with Ryan Newman and Kevin Harvick rounding out the top five. There are only four races left before the start of the NASCAR ten-race, ten-man Chase for the Championship.

MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) - Henrik Stenson, Luke Donald, Billy Andrade (AHN'-drayd) and Tim Herron are the surprise foursome that's tied for the lead halfway through the 88th P-G-A Championship. They're all at eight-under for the tourney. That's one better than Tiger Woods, Davis Love the Third and Geoff Ogilvy. First round co-leader Chris Riley, David Toms, Fred Funk and Billy Mayfair are at six under par. Phil Mickelson is four shots off the lead after matching Woods with a birdie on the final hole. It's really anybody's golf tournament. All 70 players who made the cut are within eight shots of the top spot. Only three shots separates the top 13 players on the leader board.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Rookie Jee Young Lee birdied seven straight holes to take a two-stroke lead after the first round of the Safeway Classic. Lee shot an eight-under 64. Christina Kim and Jenna Daniels are two shots back.

NEW YORK (AP) - Ohio State is the preseason number one in The Associated Press college football poll after being named first on 35 of the 65 ballots cast by a nationwide panel of media members. The Buckeyes are also number one in the coaches poll. Number-two Notre Dame received ten first-place votes in the A-P balloting, while defending national champion Texas is third after garnering eight first-place mentions. Auburn got three first place votes and checks in at number four. West Virginia is next, even though the Mountaineers received three more first-place mentions than the Tigers. Three voters liked Southern California as number one, but the Trojans will start their 2006 campaign sixth in the A-P rankings. Florida, L-S-U, California and Oklahoma round out the top ten. The second ten consists of Florida State, Miami, Louisville,
Michigan and Georgia, followed by Iowa, Virginia Tech, Clemson, Penn State and Nebraska. The 21st through 25th spots belong to Oregon, T-C-U, Tennessee, Arizona State and Texas Tech, respectively.

UNDATED (AP) - Less than a week after announcing his retirement from the N-F-L Junior Seau (SAY'-ow) figured life without hitting somebody wasn't for him. Seau will be in pads this season after agreeing to a contract with the New England Patriots. The team did not disclose terms of the deal. The 37-year old retired on Monday after three disappointing seasons with the Miami Dolphins, but the 12-time Pro Bowler said he could still play.

Wide receiver Charlie Adams failed his physical with the Dallas Cowboys, voiding a trade with Denver. The Broncos sent Adams to Dallas for a sixth-round draft pick. Adams played in all 16 games for the Broncos last year in his third season in the N-F-L. He caught 21 passes for 203 yards while also returning punts and kickoffs.

It turns out that Koren Robinson's arrest this week for drunken driving wasn't his first scrape with the law since training camp opened. The Vikings receiver was ticketed August tenth for driving a 2003 B-M-W 760 sedan without a valid Minnesota driver's license. The license he had, from his home state of North Carolina, was suspended, according to the police report. Robinson's status with the Vikes is uncertain.

MONTREAL (AP) - Martina Hingis held off the power shots of fourth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova (kooz-NET'-suh-vuh) in a 7-6, 6-3 victory in the quarterfinals of the Rogers Cup.
Hingis, the former No. 1 in the world and seventh seed, advanced to one of today's semifinals against 19-year-old Russian Anna Chakvetadze, who eliminated Shahar Peer of Israel. Dinara Safina, the ninth seed from Russia, and 13th-seeded Ana Ivanovic of Serbia will meet in the

REDS-PHILLIES
Phillies 6, Reds 5, 14 innings

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Aaron Rowand's R-B-I single with one out in the 14th inning lifted the surging Philadelphia Phillies over the Cincinnati Reds, 6-to-5. The Phillies overcame deficits in the eighth and ninth innings to win for the seventh time in ten games. David Dellucci led off the 14th with a single against Elizardo Ramirez, who was supposed to start Saturday night. Ramirez took the loss. He's 4-and-9. The Reds used nine pitchers, including starters Aaron Harang and Ramirez. All of Cincinnati's relievers pitched except Rheal Cormier, who has been used often in the past week.
Edwin Encarnacion homered twice and drove in three runs for the Reds. Fultz is 3-and-0 with the win in relief. The teams play again tonight.

CARDINALS-PIRATES
Pirates blow out Cardinals 7-1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Zach Duke struck out seven in his second complete game of the season and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-to-1 to end their five- game losing streak. Nate McLouth drove in three runs with a home run and triple.
Duke improved to 8-and-10. He had been winless in three starts since July 19th. Duke outpitched Jeff Suppan, who fell to 9-and-7. The Cardinals dropped their third in five games on their current road trip. They've lost eleven of their last 15. The teams continue their series tonight.

PIRATES MOVES
Pirates bring up Reames from Triple-A

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Right-hander Britt Reames joined the Pittsburgh Pirates from Triple-A Indianapolis yesterday to replace reliever Josh Sharpless. Sharpless went on the 15-day disabled list because of a sprained right ankle. The 32-year-old Reames was 4-and-2 with a 2-point-seven-nine E-R-A in eleven starts and had a four-point-five E-R-A in two relief appearances at Indianapolis. Sharpless, a rookie, was hurt fielding a ground ball Wednesday night in Houston

RED SOX-RED BARONS
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 4, Pawtucket 3

MOOSIC, Pa. (AP) - Jim Rushford hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to give the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons a 4-3 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox last night.
Clay Condrey pitched one inning to earn the win for the Red Barons. Matt Smith pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save. Trent Durrington had two hits, including a two-run home run for the Red Sox. Tim Bausher pitched two innings in relief to take the loss. The series continues this afternoon.

EAGLES-RUNNING BACKS
More injuries deplete Eagles' backfield

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - In a week, Marty Johnson went from playing cards and video games to being the Philadelphia Eagles' leading rusher. When the team returns to practice at Lehigh University today, Johnson could be running with the first-team offense. Johnson was working a nine-to-five job after being released by the Denver Broncos when the Eagles signed him earlier this week to provide depth to an injury-depleted backfield. He practiced with the team twice and ran for 47 yards on 12 carries in last night's preseason win over Cleveland. The Eagles already were without Ryan Moats and Correll Buckhalter when starter Brian Westbrook and Bruce Perry got hurt in the team's preseason opener against Oakland. Reno Mahe started against the Browns and ran seven times for ten yards, before sustaining a concussion last night. Fullbacks Jason Davis and Thomas Tapeh (TA-pay) split the carries until Johnson entered in the second half.

COPE CRASH
Former Steelers broadcaster Cope in chain reaction crash

PITTSBURGH (AP) - State police say former Pittsburgh Steelers radio broadcaster Myron Cope caused a five-vehicle fender-bender on Interstate 279 today and will probably be cited for following a vehicle too closely. Cope retired before last season after health problems in recent years. Police say Cope and those in other vehicles weren't hurt. Trooper Robin Mungo says Cope rear-ended a car as the vehicles
approached the Fort Pitt Tunnel, and that car then struck a truck in front of it.
Cope then swerved left to avoid those vehicles, and hit another in the rear end which, in turn, rear-ended a fifth vehicle. Mungo says Cope's regular vehicle was in the shop, so he was driving a Ford Explorer that was rented or loaned to him. Cope told police the brakes weren't working, but police checked believe Cope was just unaccustomed to driving the S-U-V.

PITT'S FAB FROSH
Pitt's transformation to new players similar to 1973

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Maybe there's not a Tony Dorsett or a Bill Fralic in the bunch, both players who were known nationally before enrolling at Pitt and went on to great college careers. Less than a week into summer camp, though, it seems that Pitt's 27 freshmen have the potential to be the best such group at Pittsburgh since Dorsett's in 1973. That class was greatly responsible from transforming the Panthers from one-game winners in 1972 to unbeaten national champions in 1976. Maybe the names aren't well known yet outside of recruiting circles, Pitt's fan base and opposing Big East teams, but coach Dave Wannstedt didn't bring them to campus to let them sit. That means the Pitt team that takes the field September Second against Virginia may not closely resemble the one that ended last season with an embarrassing 45-13 loss at West Virginia.

MLB-FINAL SCORES
White Sox win opener against Tigers...Dodgers increase lead in
West

UNDATED (AP) - Jose Contreras pitched a three-hitter for his first career shutout and the Chicago White Sox ended Justin Verlander's seven-game winning streak and beat the Detroit Tigers 5-to-0. Jim Thome (TOH'-mee) and A.J. Pierzynski homered. Contreras is 11-and-4. He didn't give up a hit until Curtis Granderson doubled with two outs in the sixth in the opener of a three-game series between the team with the best record in baseball and the defending World Series champions. The White Sox cut Detroit's lead in the A-L Central to seven and a-half games and sent the Tigers to their third straight loss.

In the rest of the A-L:
