CHICAGO (AP) - The Pirates' Paul Maholm went a season-high eight
innings as Pittsburgh ended a 17-game road losing streak with a 2-1
win over the Chicago Cubs last night. The last time the Pirates won
on the road was May 25th in a 2-1 victory at Cincinnati. It's just
their third win in 21 games overall.

CHICAGO (AP) - Pirates second baseman Bobby Crosby left last
night's game with the Chicago Cubs with concussion-like symptoms
after colliding with right fielder Lastings Milledge. After the
play, Crosby was looked at by a team trainer, but stayed in the
game. Milledge appeared to be fine.

CINCINNATI (AP) - The Reds' Scott Rolen knocked in his 300th
home run against his former team to help give Cincinnati a 7-3 win
over the Phillies. Reds starter Johnny Cueto shut down

batters in what turned into a 22-1 drubbing.

against the Blue Jays. He could return today.

their rainout from last month on September 2nd at Coors Field. The

West Coast trip when they make a stopover in Denver.

Vick has been interviewed about a shooting that took place outside
a nightclub where he had celebrated his birthday. A police
spokesman says the Philadelphia Eagles' quarterback answered
questions at police headquarters yesterday afternoon. He says Vick
is not a suspect, and no arrest has been made.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers right tackle Willie Colon has injured
his right Achilles' tendon while working out at the team's practice
complex. If the tendon is torn, Colon is likely to require surgery
that would end his season.

minute to help the Philadelphia Union open their new stadium in
Chester with a 3-1 win over the Seattle Sounders. More than 18,000

man who disappeared while taking part in the swimming portion of a
triathlon in a Philadelphia river. The Philadelphia Inquirer
reports the body of the 40-year-old man from Prospect Park in

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) - After yesterday's storybook 1-0
victory over Algeria on Landon Donovan's goal in the first minute

the U.S. out of the World Cup in 2006.

have already contacted Bobby Valentine to gauge his interest.

winning streak, longest in the majors, after trouncing Pittsburgh
13-3 last night. Michael Young had three hits and drove in four

Penn State Assistant Head Coach Tom Bradley was the guest of the Schuylkill County Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association Monday night in St. Clair. Bradley has been with the University for more than 3 decades, first as a player, then as defensive coach. Bradley tells T102 sports about the changes in the Big Ten, with the addition of Nebraska:

BRADLEY

About 50 people attended last night’s event.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - After taking two-of-three from the Cleveland Indians over the weekend and halting their 12 game losing skid, the Pittsburgh Pirates open a nine-game road trip against the Texas Rangers tonight. Texas native Ross Ohlendorf is slated to pitch the opener, followed by Paul Maholm and Jeff Karstens.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies open up a series against the Indians tonight at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies' pitching for the series has Jamie Moyer pitching the opener, followed by Kyle Kendrick tomorrow and Joe Blanton for Thursday's finale.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - All signs are pointing to Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins' return to the lineup this week. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports Rollins has left the Phillies' spring training
home in Clearwater, Florida, and is expected to rejoin the team for the series against Cleveland. Rollins has missed 26 games with a strained calf.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The solid play of Wilson Valdez means the Phillies have a decision to make when Jimmy Rollins returns to the roster sometime this week. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports Rollins' return means the Phillies will likely have to choose between Wilson Valdez or Juan Castro. The newspaper reports the Phillies likely won't keep because they're similar types of players.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pirates general manager Neal Huntington tells The Pittsburgh Tribune Review that "a handful of clubs have expressed some level of interest" in trading for Aki Iwamura, but most teams have turned down the Pirates' overtures. The Pirates have designated their high-priced bust for assignment.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Penguins will open their new home against the defending Eastern Conference champion Flyers to kick off the regular season this fall. The game at the brand new Consol Energy Center is set for Thursday, October 7th.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Penn State volleyball star Megan Hodge and Connecticut basketball forward Maya Moore have been named co-winners of the Honda-Broderick Cup. The two received the award given to the nation's top female college athlete during a ceremony at UCLA. It's only the second time in history that two athletes earned the honor.

VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) - Redshirt sophomore forward Taylor King has voluntarily withdrawn from the Villanova basketball program. The school says King plans to remain at Villanova to complete his degree requirements. King transferred to Villanova in the summer of 2008 after one year at Duke.

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) - The opening day at Wimbledon nearly produced a shocking upset. Six-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer needed to rally from two sets down to post a 5-7, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, 6-love victory over 60th-ranked Alejandro Falla of Colombia in Wimbledon's opening Centre Court match.

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) - The 2008 women's French Open champion, Francesca Schiavone was upset by Russian Vera Dushevina in the first round of Wimbledon. Ranked 47th in the world, Dushevina defeated the fifth-seeded Schiavone 6-7, 7-5, 6-1, in a match that took nearly three hours.

BOSTON (AP) - Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers says that center Rasheed Wallace is probably going to retire. The 35-year-old Wallace would finish with 15,860 points and 7,321 rebounds in a
15-year career.

UNDATED (AP) - Portugal put on the most dominant performance of the World Cup, routing North Korea 7-0 and eliminating the Asian nation from the tournament. In other World Cup results, Chile blanked Switzerland 1-0 and Spain shut out Honduras 2-0.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Florida is the first team out of the double-elimination College World Series. Florida State ousted the Gators 8-5 on a day when Clemson defeated top-seed Arizona State 6-3.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Twins' Carl Pavano outpitched Phillies
ace Roy Halladay in a 4-1 win in Philadelphia yesterday. Pavano won
his third straight by giving up just four hits in his second
complete game on the season. The only run Pavano allowed came on
Wilson Valdez's sixth-inning homer. He retired the next 13 batters
before Ryan Howard's two-out single in the ninth.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies have called up catcher Dane
Sardinha from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Sardinha was hitting .254
with four home runs and 20 RBIs in 38 games. To make room for
Sardinha on the 25-man roster, right-hander Scott Mathieson was
designated for assignment.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies are looking forward to getting
some help from the return of injured star shortstop Jimmy Rollins.
MLB.com reports Rollins went 0-for-2 with an RBI in a rehab game
for Class A Clearwater over the weekend. It was likely his last
appearance before returning to the Phillies this week after a
strained right calf.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pedro Alvarez's sacrifice fly in the eighth
inning drove in the go-ahead run as the Pirates withstood a big
game from Carlos Santana to beat the Indians 5-3 yesterday. The win
is Pittsburgh's second in a row after dropping 12 straight.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates have fired a pierogi. The team has
let go one of the people who races at PNC Park in the
dumpling-shaped costumes because he criticized the contract
extensions given to general manager Neal Huntington and manager
John Russell on his Facebook page. But all is not lost for Andrew
Kurtz. He's been offered a job as a racing hot dog from a minor
league team in Washington, Pa.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The Nashville Predators have acquired
defenseman Ryan Parent from the Philadelphia Flyers for defenseman
Dan Hamhuis and a conditional pick in the 2011 draft. Parent was
Nashville's first pick in the 2005 draft and was sent to
Philadelphia in 2007 in a trade that brought Peter Forsberg to
Nashville.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ryan Howard homered twice, Chase Utley also went deep and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Minnesota Twins 9-5 on last night. The Phillies have won three straight and four of five after a 5-14 skid dropped them into third place in the NL East. Howard went 4 for 4 with three RBIs and set a career high with four extra-base hits.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Carlos Santana reached base four times and hit an RBI double to help the Cleveland Indians extend Pittsburgh's second-longest losing streak in 55 years to 12 games with a 4-3 win over the Pirates last night. Fausto Carmona won his second consecutive start, and Santana capped a four-run seventh inning put Cleveland up 4-0.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Allen Iverson's personal manager says Iverson is working out and "absolutely" wants to return to the NBA next season. Iverson returned to the Philadelphia 76ers in December but took a leave of absence in March because of family issues, including his ill daughter. Manager Gary Moore says the girl is now "doing very well."

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (AP) - Mt. Lebanon pitcher Geena Badolato tossed a perfect game yesterday to leave the team to the state PIAA AAAA softball title with a 1-0 win over Central Bucks South. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports the only scoring in the game came from Tess Apke's first inning home run.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell is the 36-hole leader at three under par at the U.S. Open. Phil Mickelson surged into contention with a 5-under 66 and is tied for second with two-time U.S. Open winner Ernie Els, Dustin Johnson and Japan's Ryo Ishikawa, two shots behind McDowell.

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - Sherri Steinhauer has the first-round lead at the ShopRite LPGA Classic with a 7-under 64 and a one-shot lead over Natalie Gulbis and Spain's Tania Elosegui. Japan's Ai Miyazato, a three-time LPGA winner this year, was in a group two shots back.

WASHINGTON (AP) - With President Barack Obama in attendance, Washington Nationals sensation Stephen Strasburg set a record for most strikeouts by a pitcher in his first three major league starts in Washington's 2-1, 11-inning loss to the Chicago White Sox. The 21-year-old right-hander had 10 strikeouts through seven innings to give Strasburg 32 strikeouts, beating the record of 29 set by the Houston Astros' J.R. Richard in his first three starts in 1971.

NEW YORK (AP) - The hottest team in baseball is the New York Mets, who posted their eighth straight victory by beating the New York Yankees 4-0. With the bases loaded in the ninth inning, Francisco Rodriguez struck out Derek Jeter and retired Nick Swisher on a foulout to end it.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) - After coming back from a goal down to tie England 1-1 in their opener, the Americans spotted Slovenia a 2-0 halftime lead before fighting back for a 2-2 draw. The U.S. will have to beat Algeria on Wednesday to have any chance of moving on at the World Cup.

NEW YORK (AP) - The Phillies are leaving the Bronx after taking
two of three in their World Series rematch with the Yankees.
Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick kept the Yankees guessing in last
night's 7-1 win. Shane Victorino homered for Philadelphia.

NEW YORK (AP) - The Phillies have put reliever Antonio Bastardo
on the 15-day disabled list because of inflammation in his left
elbow and called up right-hander Scott Mathieson from Triple-A
Lehigh Valley. Bastardo pitched Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium. He
hit two batters and walked another while getting only two outs. He
has a 5.11 ERA in 16 games this season.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates' losing streak now stands at 11
after their latest setback last night. The White Sox beat
Pittsburgh 5-4 with a strong outing from Mark Beuhrle, who gave up
two runs in 7-plus innings. Pirates rookie Pedro Alvarez struck out
for the third time with runners on first and third to a potential
comeback. Alvarez was 0-4 on the night.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pirates president Frank Coonelly says the team
didn't ask Aki Iwamura to undergo a physical before trading for him
last year, even though the former Rays infielder was coming off
major left knee surgery. Coonelly says it's uncommon for big league
teams to ask for such physicals. The Pirates have designated the
high-priced acquisition for assignment.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates say they extended the
contracts of manager John Russell and general manager Neal
Huntington through the 2011 season without making a public
announcement. The Pirates were coming off a 99-loss season in 2009
and apparently felt that announcing the extensions over the winter
might further lessen enthusiasm amid already slow ticket sales.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia 76ers have traded Samuel
Dalembert to the Sacramento Kings for Andres Nocioni and Spencer
Hawes. Dalembert never developed into a dominant force after being
drafted in the first round in 2001. The 6-foot-11 center averaged
8.1 points and 8.3 rebounds over eight seasons. He was unhappy with
his role and asked for a trade last year.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (AP) - Philadelphia Flyers star center Danny
Briere and his 9-year-old son have escaped serious injury in a
collision with a tractor-trailer on a New York interstate. The
accident happened around 12:30 yesterday morning on Interstate 81
just north of the New York-Pennsylvania line. Police say Briere was
"a little drowsy" when he clipped the truck while trying to pass
it.

NEW YORK (AP) - Jamie Moyer worked eight sharp innings to become
the oldest pitcher to beat the Yankees. The 47-year-old lefty
bounced back from the worst start of his career to pitch the
Philadelphia Phillies past New York 6-3 last night. Shane Victorino
hit a bases-loaded triple, and Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth hit the
Phillies' first back-to-back homers of the season.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The debut of top Pirates prospect Pedro
Alvarez was spoiled by the White Sox last night with a 7-2 victory
in Pittsburgh. Alvarez was 0 for 2 with a walk and a strikeout. The
rookie contributed one of the Pirates' four ninth-inning errors by
mishandling a throw at third base. The Pirates have run their
losing streak to 10.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - To make room for top prospect Pedro Alvarez,
the Pirates have designated infielder Aki Iwamura for assignment
and will actively try to trade their highest-paid player. Iwamura
is making $4.8 million this year. He's been one of the majors'
worst offensive players, batting .182 with two homers and nine RBIs
while striking out 31 times in 165 at-bats.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed
fifth-round draft choices Chris Scott and Crezdon Butler, giving
them eight of their 10 picks under contract. The only unsigned
picks are first-round selection Maurkice Pouncey from Florida and
second-round pick Jason Worilds, who's an outside linebacker from
Virginia Tech.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Penguins are joining the rest
of the NHL Atlantic Division by moving the starting times of their
home night games to 7 p.m. Eastern next season. The Penguins had
been the only team in the five-team division that started its games
at 7:30 p.m.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Penguins' first game in the new Consol
Energy Center will be a September 22nd exhibition matchup against
the Detroit Red Wings. The Penguins usually play two home preseason
games but they added a third game this season because of the new
arena. The other home games will be September 25th against Columbus
and the 28th against Stanley Cup champion Chicago.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - The Minnesota Wild have hired Penguins
assistant Mike Yeo as their new head coach of the AHL affiliate in
Houston. Yeo spent the last five seasons on the Pittsburgh bench,
helping them win the 2009 Stanley Cup. The 36-year-old knows Wild
GM Chuck Fletcher from their days together in Pittsburgh.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Mario Lemieux Foundation will benefit when
table games get a test run at Pittsburgh's Rivers Casino next
month. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports an eight-hour,
invitation-only test run is set for July 6th, two days before the
casino on the city's North Shore hopes to being offering table
games.

VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) - Villanova has announced that assistant
basketball coach Doug West has left the team to pursue a business
opportunity, and Keith Urgo and Baker Dunleavy have been added to
coach Jay Wright's staff. West is leaving after three seasons as an
assistant. He scored 2,037 points at Villanova from 1985-89 and
played 12 years in the NBA.

NEW YORK (AP) - Nick Swisher and the Yankees have handed Roy
Halladay a rare thumping, beating the Phillies and their ace 8-3
last night in a World Series rematch. Mark Teixeira, Curtis
Granderson and Swisher all homered off Halladay to build a
comfortable cushion for CC Sabathia in a marquee pitching matchup
that fizzled early.

NEW YORK (AP) - The Phillies have flip-flopped starters for the
final two games of the series with the Yankees. Lefty Jamie Moyer
will now pitch tonight instead of tomorrow. Righty Kyle Kendrick
gets the nod in the series finale.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The White Sox have spoiled former first-round
draft pick Brad Lincoln's first start at home, beating Pittsburgh
6-4 last night and extending the last-place Pirates' losing streak
to nine games. Gordon Beckham drove in three runs for the Sox and
Ramon Castro doubled in a run while reaching base four consecutive
times for Chicago.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates say top prospect Pedro Alvarez has
some work to do before he's called up to the big leagues. The third
baseman remained at Triple-A Indianapolis as Pittsburgh opened an
interleague series against the White Sox yesterday. General manager
Neil Huntington say Alvarez has to improve in some areas before
he's major league ready.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed wide
receiver Emmanuel Sanders and three other draft picks, giving them
six picks under contract. In addition to Sanders, who's a
third-round pick from SMU, fifth-round linebacker Stevenson
Sylvester and sixth-rounders Jonathan Dwye and Antonio Brown, have
signed.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Soul are returning to the
Arena Football League. The former league champions will return for
the 2011 season without their famous former co-owner, Jon Bon Jovi.
Co-owner Craig Spencer and former Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski
are part of the new ownership group. The Soul shut down after
winning the ArenaBowl championship in 2008.

DALLAS (AP) - The two Dallas Cowboys employees suing over
injuries they suffered in the collapse of the team's practice
facility last year have reached out-of-court settlements with the
Allentown company that built the structure. Both Cowboys scout Rich
Behm and special teams coach Joe DeCamillas show that both have
settled with Summit Structures LLC and its Canadian parent company.

PIRATES
Pirates idle, start interleague homestand Tuesday
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates were off yesterday after a winless road trip that extended their losing skid to eight consecutive games. The Detroit Tigers rallied for a 4-3 victory Sunday that completed a weekend sweep. The Pirates will play their next six games at home, with the Chicago White Sox coming into town today and the Cleveland Indians arriving on Friday. The Pirates are 23-40 and in the cellar in the National League Central -- 12 and a half games behind division leading Cincinnati.

PIRATES-ALVAREZ
Pirates mull Alvarez callup
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates are considering giving Triple-A prospect Pedro Alvarez his first taste of the majors. General manager Neal Huntington said on his weekly radio show
Sunday that the team hasn't ruled calling up the third baseman for the homestand that begins today. Alvarez is hitting .285 for Indianapolis and is second in the International League in extra base hits. He told The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette yesterday that he hadn't heard from the big club, but feels confident he can play at the big league level.

PHILLIES
Phillies idle, heading to the Bronx
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies had a day off yesterday after avoiding a sweep in Boston with a 5-3 win Sunday over the Red Sox. The road trip resumes today in the Bronx, where the Phillies' season ended last November in Game 6 of the World Series. It'll be deja vu for the Phils as the Yankees send starters C.C. Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Andy Pettitte to the mound for the
three-game set. This time, however, the Phillies will be bringing ace Roy Halladay. The Yankees are tied for the division lead in the American League East, while the Phillies are in third in the NL East.

BOXER'S STEP-GRANDSON KILLED
Pa. man on trial in death of boxer's step-grandson
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A man is on trial in the shooting death of the step-grandson of boxing great Joe Frazier at a North Philadelphia bar a year ago. Police say 25-year-old Peter Lyde Jr. was working as a security guard when he was struck by a bullet during a May 2009 argument
during the "grand reopening" of the Pleasures On The Ridge tavern. He was the son of Peter Lyde Sr. who is married to Philadelphia Municipal Court Judge Jacqui Frazier-Lyde, Joe
Frazier's daughter. Prosecutors say 33-year-old Rodney Evans of West Philadelphia
argued with another man and pulled a gun and pursued him outside, and during an exchange of gunfire Lyde was shot. Defense attorney Jack McMahon told jurors Monday that Evans was not armed and shot no one that night.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas says it is staying in the Big 12 after turning down an invitation to join the Pac-10. Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M also say they are staying in the Big
12, which on Friday seemed in danger of falling apart after Nebraska and Colorado both decided to leave over the next two years.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - One victory separates the Boston Celtics from their 18th NBA championship. The Celtics take a 3-2 series lead over the L.A. Lakers into Tuesday night's Game 6 at the Staples Center, where the defending NBA champion Lakers are 9-and-1 in this
postseason.

That's the opinion of his son, Nuggets coach Coby Karl, who says his father is "much improved" in recent weeks as he recovers from an intense six-week regimen of chemotherapy to combat throat and neck cancer.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill (AP) - Cristie Kerr is the winner of the rain-delayed LPGA State Farm Classic by one shot over Anna Nordqvist and Na Yeon Choi in a rare Monday finish due to Sunday's rains. Kerr fought off flulike symptoms to shoot a 3-under 69 in the final round to finish at 22-under.

IRENE, South Africa (AP) - U.S. soccer fans can relax - Tim Howard should be in goal Friday against Slovenia. Howard is expected to play despite bruised ribs after making what the U.S.

NBA FINALS-GAME 5
Celtics take 3-2 lead to Los Angeles

BOSTON (AP) - The Boston Celtics withstood a 38-point performance by Kobe Bryant to move within one victory of their 18th NBA title. Because of that, the defending NBA champion L.A. Lakers are trailing in a series for the first time in the postseason. Paul Pierce had his best game of the playoffs - 27 points on 12-of-21 shooting - to lead the Celtics to a 92-86 victory that
gives them a 3-2 series lead over the Lakers. Rajon Rondo and Kevin Garnett each added
18 as the Celtics shot 56.3 percent for the game. The Celtics won despite another awesome performance by Bryant. He scored the Lakers' first 19 points in the third quarter while
single handedly keeping the Lakers in it on a cold-shooting night. The Lakers shot 39.7 percent for the game. The Celtics are 6-and-4 on the road in these playoffs. Now they must win either Tuesday night's Game 6 or Thursday night's Game 7, if necessary, in Los Angeles to win their 18th NBA title. "We've got to get one," Pierce said. "We're too close to our goal. We've got to get one."

NBA-HAWKS
New coach in place
ATLANTA (AP) - The Atlanta Hawks have officially named Larry Drew as their new head coach. The former assistant to Mike Woodson, who was fired by the club, is getting his first head coaching job. Drew emerged as the new coach from a search that also included former head coaches Dwane Casey and Avery Johnson.

WORLD CUP
U.S. keeper may have broken ribs
IRENE, South Africa (AP) - U.S. coach Bob Bradley isn't sure whether goalkeeper Tim Howard broke ribs during a collision with Emile Heskey in the Americans' World Cup opener against England yesterday. Bradley says the team would decide later today if Howard needs medical tests. Bradley says he has no definite answer whether Howard will be available for Friday's game against Slovenia, but "you'd certainly expect he'll be on the field again." Howard had six saves as the United States rallied for a 1-1 tie against England.

WORLD CUP Day 3 recap
UNDATED (AP) - In the World Cup, Slovenia beat Algeria 1-0 on a late goal by Robert Koren. That puts Slovenia in first place in Group C, ahead of the United States and England. - Ghana topped Serbia 1-0 on an 84th-minute penalty kick in the day's second match. The kick was awarded after a Serbian player needlessly put his hand on the ball in his own goal area then
argued the call and yellow card he received. - Germany scored two goals in each half and Tim Cahill was sent off as the three-time champions beat Australia 4-0 in Group D action.

MLB-FINAL SCORES
Coming close in Chicago...Strasburg shines again...Angels' first
Chavez Ravine sweep
UNDATED (AP) - There already have been three no-hitters this baseball season, including two perfect games. Two pitchers at Wrigley Field came close to adding to that total. The Chicago Cubs' 1-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox had dueling no-hit bids for a spell. Winning pitcher Ted Lilly didn't allow a hit until Juan Pierre's leadoff single in the ninth, and losing pitcher Gavin Floyd had a no-hit bid for six and two-thirds innings before Alfonso Soriano's double that eventually led to the Cubs' lone run. That ends the White Sox' five-game win streak.
In other interleague play: - Stephen Strasburg's personal linescore after two big league starts is two victories, 22 strikeouts and a growing respect by some legends of the game. After the fireballing rookie struck out eight in five and a-third innings in Washington's 9-4 win over Cleveland, the Indians' 91-year-old Hall of Famer Bob Feller said it's "real refreshing to see anyone with such talent come into the league." This game wasn't as easy as his even-inning, 14-strikeout debut, but it wasn't bad either. Strasburg lasted 5 1/3 innings, allowing just two hits, but walked five. The L.A. Angels earned their first Freeway Series sweep at Dodger Stadium with a 6-5 victory. Hideki Matsui had three hits and drove in a pair. Torii Hunter and
Mike Napoli homered for the Angels, who improved to a season-best six games over .500 at 36-and-30 with their 10th win in 12 games. - Cole Hamels cooled off Boston's surging lineup with seven strong innings, helping Philadelphia to a 5-3 win over the Red Sox. The win gave the Phillies one win in the three game set, in which they were outscored 25-9. Raul Ibanez hit
a two-run homer for the Phillies. - The Colorado Rockies beat the Toronto Blue Jays 10-3 to
complete a three-game series sweep. Jeff Francis pitched seven innings to earn his first home win in two years. - David Wright hit two homers and Mike Pelfrey earned his ninth win against just one loss as the Mets beat Baltimore 11-4 for a three-game sweep. The Mets also got home runs from Chris Carter and Jason Bay. - Miguel Cabrera hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the eighth inning, lifting the Detroit Tigers to a 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. In his first start since his near-perfect game, Detroit's Armando Galarraga gave up two runs and was not involved in the decision. Zack Greinke struck out 12 in a five-hitter, ending a personal four-start skid and leading the Kansas City Royals to a 7-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.
- Jorge Posada hit a grand slam for the second straight day and Robinson Cano connected for his
100th career homer as the New York Yankees completed a three-game sweep of visiting Houston, 9-5. Troy Glaus homered twice and tied a career high with four hits to power the Atlanta Braves past the Minnesota Twins 7-3. The Braves took two of three in an interleague series between division leaders. Chris Volstad pitched six solid innings to stop a personal
six-game winless streak and the Florida Marlins got two RBIs from rookie Mike Stanton in a 6-1 victory over Tampa Bay. Colby Lewis scattered three hits over eight innings and added
a key two-out single with the bases loaded to lead the Texas Rangers to a 7-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. Josh Hamilton homered for the AL West-leading Rangers. The Seattle Mariners snapped a five-game losing streak with a 4-2 win over the San Diego Padres. Jose Lopez doubled in the go-ahead run. Felix Hernandez came within one out of a complete
game and improved to 4-and-5. Aubrey Huff hit a pair of two-run homers, Matt Cain won his
fourth straight decision and the San Francisco Giants beat the Oakland Athletics 6-2 to complete a three-game series sweep in the Bay Bridge Series. In the only game involving two National League teams, Arizona trimmed St. Louis 7-5. Chris Young rescued Arizona's much-maligned
bullpen with his second homer of the game, a two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth after St. Louis had tied it with three runs in the top of the ninth.

NASCAR
Hamlin finishes first
BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) - Denny Hamlin continued his hot streak, dominating Sunday's NASCAR race at Michigan International Speedway to pick up his second straight victory and fifth of the season. Hamlin led 123 laps and controlled the second half of the race, easily pulling away from Kasey Kahne on a restart with under 20 laps remaining. Kahne held on for second, followed by pole-sitter Kurt Busch, Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart. Four-time defending series champion Jimmie Johnson was sixth and Dale Earnhardt Jr. was seventh.

NFL-TITANS
QB Young cited for assault at Dallas strip club
DALLAS (AP) - Police say Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young received an assault citation after an altercation inside a Dallas strip club, but no arrests were made. Dallas police Lt. Andy Harvey says the former University of Texas star was not at Club Onyx when police responded to a call of a physical confrontation early Sunday morning. Harvey said an investigation led to Young receiving a Class C assault citation, punishable by a fine up to $500.

DETROIT (AP) - Brennan Boesch hit a solo shot in a three-run fourth inning and Ramon Santiago had a two-run homer in a three-run sixth, lifting the Detroit Tigers to a 6-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night. Justin Verlander gave up two runs on four hits and matched a season high with four walks in seven-plus innings.

BOSTON (AP) - David Ortiz drove in four runs, Boston led 12-0 after three innings and the Red Sox beat the Philadelphia Phillies 12-2 on Friday night in the worst start of Jamie Moyer's 24
seasons. The 47-year-old left-hander allowed nine runs on nine hits, including six doubles and a two-run homer.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Former Ohio State teammates Thaddeus Gibson and Doug Worthington are the first two Pittsburgh Steelers draft picks to reach contract terms. Each signed three-year contracts. Gibson is an outside linebacker and was a fourth-round pick. Worthington is a defensive end picked in the seventh round.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik will need up to six weeks of rehabiliation after surgery to repair a sports hernia. Orpik played with the injury, which occurs when there is a weakening of the muscles or tendon in the lower abdomen, during the second half of the NHL season.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Kelley Paterno, daughter-in-law to the Nittany Lions' Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno, was among 50 women who took part in Penn State's first women-only football clinic yesterday. Some schools, including Clemson and Mississippi, offer similar clinics to give women a taste of the male-dominated sport.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State coach Joe Paterno says he's fine now after illness forced him to miss a few appearances. The 83-year-old canceled at least three appearances outside of State College over the last month, including a trip to the Big Ten meetings in May, because of a lingering intestinal bug.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - A contrite Ben Roethlisberger says he got
caught up in a Big Ben persona that led to off-field problems and
affected his play as the Steelers' quarterback. In his first
interview since the most recent sexual assault allegations were
made against him, Roethlisberger told Pittsburgh TV stations KDKA
and WTAE he has been young, dumb and immature.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Steelers' starting quarterback going into
training camp will be Ben Roethlisberger. And Byron Leftwich.
Because of Roethlisberger's suspension, the Steelers already know
they must get another quarterback ready to play when the season
starts. Leftwich has taken the bulk of the snaps in voluntary
practices that wrapped up this week.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Pirates have been swept out of the
nation's capital after a 4-2 loss to the Nationals last night. Adam
Dunn and Josh Willingham homered for Washington in the fourth
inning. The Bucs have lost five in a row.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Josh Johnson outdueled Roy Halladay in their
perfect game rematch, pitching eight dominant innings and leading
the Marlins over the Phillies 2-0 last night. Johnson and Halladay
last met on May 29th in Miami, when the Phillies ace threw the 20th
perfect game in major league history in a 1-0 win. Johnson gave up
three hits, walked one and struck out five.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies have announced that Wednesday
night's rainout against Florida will be made up as part of a
day-night doubleheader on September 6th. The first game is
scheduled for 1:05 p.m., followed by the regularly scheduled 7:05
start.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies top draft pick has agreed to
terms with the defending National League champs. The 18-year-old
joked that he was now the Phillies top hurler, pushing Roy Halladay
to Number 2. Biddle is a graduate of suburban Philadelphia's
Germantown Friends school.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Eagles have ended their final
pre-training camp workout with Pro Bowl cornerback Asante Samuel at
a funeral, Pro Bowl wide receiver DeSean Jackson attending to
personal business, and Donovan McNabb in Washington. Samuel and
Jackson are expected to be present when the team opens training
camp July 29th at Lehigh University. McNabb, of course, will not.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Colorado has made the first move in what
could be a wild ride to realignment by leaving the Big 12 for the
Pac-10. Next up is Nebraska, which may leave to join Penn State in
the Big Ten. The Big Ten has also shown interest in Notre Dame and
could look to pilfer schools from the Big East to form a 16-team
league.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Chicago Blackhawks have won the Stanley
Cup for the first time since 1961 by downing the Flyers 4-3 in Game
6 of the finals at Philadelphia. The Blackhawks had a 3-2 lead late
in the third period before Patrick Kane won it at 4:10 of OT.
Jonathan Toews (tayvz) won the Conn Smythe (smyth) Trophy as the
MVP of the playoffs after finishing with seven goals and 29 points.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - The Nebraska Board of Regents has amended the
agenda for its previously scheduled Friday meeting to include a
briefing from chancellor Harvey Perlman and athletic director Tom
Osborne on conference alignment. The regents could then vote to
leave the Big 12 for the Big Ten. Osborne said a decision has not
been finalized, and he declined comment when asked whether the Big
Ten had formally invited Nebraska to join the league.

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan State assistant Mark
Montgomery says coach Tom Izzo called a team meeting Tuesday to
inform his players he has talked to the Cleveland Cavaliers about
their head coaching vacancy. Montgomery says Izzo told the Spartans
to focus on classes and workouts, and did not tell the Spartans he
was leaving the school to coach the Cavs. Cleveland general manager
Chris Grant has confirmed that the team has been in contact with
Izzo and other candidates.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - Avery Johnson says he has agreed to
become the coach of the New Jersey Nets and thinks the team will
announce the deal Thursday. Johnson coached Dallas for three-plus
seasons, going 194-70 in the regular season and 23-24 in the
playoffs. He guided the Mavs to the NBA finals in 2006, but was
fired after a first-round playoff series loss to New Orleans in
2008.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - The University of Oregon says quarterback
Jeremiah Masoli (muh-SOHL'-ee) has been dismissed from the football
team because of a "failure to adhere to obligations" outlined by
coach Chip Kelly. The move came two days after a police officer
cited him for marijuana possession and driving infractions. Kelly
had already suspended Masoli for the entire 2010 season after the
QB pleaded guilty to burglary for his role in the theft of laptops
from an Oregon fraternity.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Pirates couldn't overcome an electric
major league debut for Nationals phenom Stephen Strasburg, who
struck out 14 Bucs in a 5-2 win for D.C. Strasburg's fastballs hit
the 100 miles-per-hour and the Pirates couldn't keep up with his
nasty curves. He struck out the last seven batters he faced. All
nine Pirates in the starting lineup fanned at least once.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Pirates have optioned first baseman Jeff
Clement to Triple-A Indianapolis and designated left-hander Jack
Taschner for assignment. Pirates manager John Russell said the team
will announce more moves today to fill the roster spots.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates have selected hard-throwing
right-hander Stetson Allie of St. Edward High School in Lakewood,
Ohio, with their second-round pick in the baseball draft. Allie's
fastball has been clocked in the high 90's - just like the Bucs'
first-round pick, Texas high school pitcher Jameson Taillon.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ben Francisco hit a two-run single with two
outs in the eighth inning to help the Phillies rally for a 10-8
victory over the Florida Marlins. Brad Lidge pitched out of a
bases-loaded jam in the ninth for his third save in three tries.
Ryan Howard and Shane Victorino homered for the struggling
Phillies.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Flyers are in the familiar position of
facing elimination tonight in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup finals.
Philadelphia trails the series against the Blackhawks 3 games to 2.
The team has hinted that Michael Leighton will be back in goal to
start tonight's matchup after being pulled in Game 5.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A video is making the rounds online that
appears to show a little boy drinking from a beer bottle at a
Phillies game. The five-second snippet captures the tot swigging in
the stands at Sunday's Phillies-Padres game. It's not clear whether
the bottle is full or empty in the video. Neither Philadelphia
police nor the city's child-welfare agency are investigating.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Developers are downsizing plans for an
entertainment facility planned for Philadelphia's sports complex
area following the demolition of the Spectrum. Comcast-Spectacor
and a Baltimore-based developer have cut back the plans for a
massive 300,000 square-foot entertainment facility dubbed "Philly
Live!" to just 40,000 square feet.

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Bryant Irwin is transferring from St.
Joseph's to Furman College in South Carolina after two seasons in
Philadelphia. Irwin averaged more than four points and two rebounds
over 61 games. He won the Gatorade State Player of the Year award
in his senior year at Bridgeport High School in West Virginia.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Adrian Gonzalez broke up Cole Hamels' bid
for a no-hitter in the seventh inning with the first of two solo
homers and the San Diego Padres went on to beat the Phillies 3-1
last night. Hamels gave up three hits and two runs in eight
innings, losing his third straight start.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Carlos Silva allowed one run over seven
innings, Ryan Theriot scored four times and the Chicago Cubs beat
the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-1 yesterday. Silva gave up four hits,
struck out five and walked one in his first start against
Pittsburgh since 2003.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates have drafted
hard-throwing Texas high school pitcher Jameson Taillon (TAI'-ohn)
with the Number 2 pick in the baseball draft. The Pirates are
hoping he'll be the impact starter they have failed so frequently
to land. Taillon's fastball has been clocked at 99 miles per hour.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Flyers have another day off before they
have to deal with the Chicago Blackhawks again. And Philadelphia
seemingly has Chicago right where it wants, at home in the Wachovia
Center, where the Flyers are 9-1 in the playoffs - including 2-0 in
the finals.

CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville expects
his team to come out tomorrow in Philadelphia with the same
aggressive approach it has taken so far against the Flyers. He
called Game 6 the biggest game ever for him and most of his players
and said they'll have to channel their emotions and withstand a
certain early hard charge from the Flyers.

NEW YORK (AP) - The Blackhawks' 7-4 win over the Flyers earned
the highest preliminary television rating for a nonovertime Game 5
in the Stanley Cup finals in eight years. Sunday night's game on
NBC drew a 4.0 overnight rating and 7 share. That's up 54 percent
from the 2.6 for Game 5 of the Detroit-Pittsburgh series last year.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - La Salle men's basketball coach John
Giannini has agreed to a new multiyear contract. Terms of the deal
were not released. Giannini has an 83-97 record in six seasons. He
has a career coaching record of 380-246, including coaching stints
at Rowan University and Maine.

CHICAGO (AP) - The Flyers are on the brink of elimination after
a 7-4 loss to the Blackhawks last night in Game 5 of the Stanley
Cup Finals. Dustin Byfuglien scored two goals and had two assists
for Chicago. Chicago can capture the Stanley Cup for the first time
since 1961 with a victory Wednesday night in Philadelphia in Game
6.

CHICAGO (AP) - Chris Pronger and Philadelphia's stiff defense
suddenly went soft last night. After pushing the Blackhawks around
for the better part of the Stanley Cup finals, Pronger and his
blueline mates ran out of steam in the 7-4 loss. The Flyers were
never able to recover from the 3-0 lead Chicago posted in the first
period.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Padres knocked off the Phillies 6-5
yesterday after a pinch-hit single from Oscar Salazar in the 10th
inning drove in the winning run for San Diego. The Padres' Chase
Headley had four hits, including a single off Danys Baez to open
the 10th. Salazar's single drove Headley in for the winning run two
batters later.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - A sacrifice fly from Freddy Sanchez in the
10th scored the winning run for the San Francisco Giants in a 6-5
victory in Pittsburgh yesterday. Sanchez went 7 for 13 in his first
series in Pittsburgh since being traded to the Giants in July. The
Bucs' Jeff Clement struck out with runners on second and third to
end the game in the bottom of the 10th.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pirates pitching prospect Brad Lincoln may
make his major league debut in Washington. Pirates general manager
Neal Huntington says Lincoln might be called up to start Wednesday
against the Nationals. Lincoln was the Pirates' 2006 first-round
draft pick. He's 6-2 with a 3.16 ERA in 11 starts at Triple-A
Indianapolis.

LONG POND, Pa. (AP) - Denny Hamlin won again at Pocono, pulling
away from teammate Kyle Busch following a late restart yesterday in
the 500-mile race at the massive 2.5-mile oval. The victory was
Hamlin's fourth of the season and fourth in nine career starts at
the "tricky triangle."

PARK RIDGE, Ill. (AP) - Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany says the
conference's timetable for potential expansion might be moved up
since the Pac-10 has revealed plans for its own expansion. Penn
State's Graham Spanier and the conferences 10 other school
presidents and chancellors met for about 4 1/2 hours yesterday.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Matthew Goss won a sprint to the finish line
to win the 156-mile Philadelphia International Championship pro
cycling race yesterday. Goss finished second in the race in 2007.
He emerged ahead of the pack with a time of 6 hours, 15 minutes, 46
seconds. Ina Teutenberg won the 57.6-mile Women's Liberty Classic
for the fourth time in 2 hours, 31 minutes, 39 seconds.
