PITTSBURGH (AP) - A contrite Ben Roethlisberger says he got
caught up in a Big Ben persona that led to off-field problems and
affected his play as the Steelers' quarterback. In his first
interview since the most recent sexual assault allegations were
made against him, Roethlisberger told Pittsburgh TV stations KDKA
and WTAE he has been young, dumb and immature.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Steelers' starting quarterback going into
training camp will be Ben Roethlisberger. And Byron Leftwich.
Because of Roethlisberger's suspension, the Steelers already know
they must get another quarterback ready to play when the season
starts. Leftwich has taken the bulk of the snaps in voluntary
practices that wrapped up this week.
WASHINGTON (AP) - The Pirates have been swept out of the
nation's capital after a 4-2 loss to the Nationals last night. Adam
Dunn and Josh Willingham homered for Washington in the fourth
inning. The Bucs have lost five in a row.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Josh Johnson outdueled Roy Halladay in their
perfect game rematch, pitching eight dominant innings and leading
the Marlins over the Phillies 2-0 last night. Johnson and Halladay
last met on May 29th in Miami, when the Phillies ace threw the 20th
perfect game in major league history in a 1-0 win. Johnson gave up
three hits, walked one and struck out five.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies have announced that Wednesday
night's rainout against Florida will be made up as part of a
day-night doubleheader on September 6th. The first game is
scheduled for 1:05 p.m., followed by the regularly scheduled 7:05
start.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies top draft pick has agreed to
terms with the defending National League champs. The 18-year-old
joked that he was now the Phillies top hurler, pushing Roy Halladay
to Number 2. Biddle is a graduate of suburban Philadelphia's
Germantown Friends school.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Eagles have ended their final
pre-training camp workout with Pro Bowl cornerback Asante Samuel at
a funeral, Pro Bowl wide receiver DeSean Jackson attending to
personal business, and Donovan McNabb in Washington. Samuel and
Jackson are expected to be present when the team opens training
camp July 29th at Lehigh University. McNabb, of course, will not.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Colorado has made the first move in what
could be a wild ride to realignment by leaving the Big 12 for the
Pac-10. Next up is Nebraska, which may leave to join Penn State in
the Big Ten. The Big Ten has also shown interest in Notre Dame and
could look to pilfer schools from the Big East to form a 16-team
league.
