PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Dwight Howard will have plenty of elbow room
wherever he watches Game 6. What Howard won't do tonight is play.
Howard was suspended one game by the NBA yesterday for his elbow on
Sixers center Samuel Dalembert in Orlando's Game 5 victory.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Scott Olsen pitched neatly into the sixth
inning to help the Washington Nationals snapp the Philadelphia
Phillies' five-game winning streak with a 4-1 victory last night.
The Phillies are off until tomorrow when they host the New York
Mets.

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Yovani Gallardo struck out a career-high 11 and
the Milwaukee Brewers swept the Pittsburgh Pirates - again - with a
1-0 victory yesterday. The Pirates are off until tomorrow when they
return home for a weekend series against the Cincinnati Reds.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) - The Atlanta Falcons have signed
former Georgia running back Verron Haynes. Haynes, who spent the
last six seasons as a backup with the Pittsburgh Steelers, adds
depth to an Atlanta backfield that already includes Michael Turner
and Jerious Norwood.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The lawyer for Pittsburgh Steelers receiver
and Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes says he'll file a motion to
suppress evidence police got in a traffic stop. Pittsburgh police
said they found three marijuana-filled cigars in Holmes' car when
he was pulled over Oct. 23rd.

America's Cup champion Alinghi of Switzerland is being ordered
to tell a New York court why it should not be held in contempt for
refusing to comply with an order that its one-on-one showdown
against American crew BMW Oracle Racing be held in February.
The Supreme Court of the State of New York, acting on a request
by San Francisco's Golden Gate Yacht Club, scheduled a hearing for
May 14.
This is the latest twist in a bitter fight between billionaires
that has delayed a conventional, multichallenger America's Cup and
led to a rare showdown between Alinghi and BMW Oracle Racing.
Alinghi has said it is preparing to hold the best-of-three
series for the oldest trophy in international sports beginning in
May 2010.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - The Philadelphia 76ers are in the same
position as they were a year ago. They took a 2-1 series lead on
Detroit before losing in six games. Two of the final three games -
if necessary - are in Orlando. With the series knotted at two games
each, Game 5 is tonight in Orlando.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez each hit a grand
slam, rallying the Philadelphia Phillies to a wild 13-11 victory
over the Washington Nationals last night. It's Philadelphia's fifth
straight win. The two teams are back at it tonight.

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Rickie Weeks broke open a tie game in the
eighth inning with a run-scoring fielder's choice, lifting the
Milwaukee Brewers to a 10-5 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates last
night. The series resumes tonight with the second of three games to
be played.

UNDATED (AP) - Suspended Phillies reliever J.C. Romero has filed
suit against a nutritional supplement manufacturer alleging an
unlisted ingredient in one of its products caused him to test
positive for a substance banned by Major League Baseball. Romero is
suspended for the first 50 games of the 2009 season.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Daryll Clark has come full-circle in
just a season. Last spring, he was competing against Pat Devlin for
the Nittany Lions' starting quarterback job. One year and a Big Ten
title later, he's the unquestioned leader of the Penn State
offense.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Organizers of the TD Bank Philadelphia
Cycling Championship are waiting an extra day before deciding the
fate of the financially troubled race. Event co-founder Dave
Chauner says his group has been able to raise only $100,000 of the
$500,000 needed to close a budget gap.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Hedo Turkoglu nailed a 3-pointer over
Thaddeus Young with 1.1 seconds to lift the Orlando Magic to an
84-81 victory over Philadelphia last night. It evens the Eastern
Conference first-round series at two games apiece. The series
resumes Tuesday in Orlando.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Better learn
to deal with them. As the Penguins' Game 6 comeback in Philadelphia
showed, any team that expects to beat them without effectively
controlling two of the NHL's best players probably has little
chance of succeeding. Pittsburgh won the series, 4-2.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Another season ended early for the
Philadelphia Flyers when they were knocked out in the first round
of the Eastern Conference playoffs Saturday by the Pittsburgh
Penguins in six games. Of the four major pro teams in the city,
only the NFL's Eagles have a longer championship drought - 49
years.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Ross Ohlendorf pitched into the eighth inning
and Adam LaRoche hit two home runs, lifting the Pittsburgh Pirates
to an 8-3 win over the San Diego Padres yesterday. Pittsburgh
continues its road trip with a three-game series against the
Milwuakee Brewers beginning tonight.

MIAMI (AP) - Jamie Moyer pitched six solid innings and the
Philadelphia Phillies extended the Florida Marlins' skid to six
with a 13-2 victory yesterday. Moyer allowed one run and seven hits
to improve 12-1 against the Marlins overall. The Phillies begin a
three-game set against Washington tonight.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Hines Ward has finalized his five-year
contract extension with the Steelers, a deal that should allow the
two-time Super Bowl winner to finish his career in Pittsburgh. The
$22 million extension, signed yesterday, runs through the 2013
season, though the 33-year-old Ward may not play that long.

PENN STATE BLUE AND WHITE GAME

Seventy six thousand hungry Penn State football fans flocked to Beaver Stadium Saturday afternoon to get a first glimpse of the Nittany Lions for the annual Blue White scrimmage. The Lions return 37 lettermen this season, but the game was also an opportunity for the Penn State coaching staff to see some of the underclassmen in live game action. Among them is former Blue Mountain High School standout, guard Matt Stankiewitch (stan-kev-itch). He summed up the day and spring practice:

The Nittany Lions will open the regular season on September 5th at home against Akron, on WPPA and T102 Sports.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Philadelphia Flyers desperation paid off
with a comeback victory in a series that looked to be lost. They
avoided elimination by beating the Penguins 3-0 last night to force
Game 6 in the Eastern Conference first-round series. The series
returns to Philadelphia Saturday afternoon.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Dave Bush held Philadelphia hitless for 7
1-3 innings before pinch-hitter Matt Stairs homered and the
Milwaukee Brewers beat the Phillies 6-1. Bush became the sixth
pitcher to take a no-hit bid into the late innings this season. The
Phillies are on the road for a weekend series against the Florida
Marlins.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - By splitting the first two games in Orlando,
the Philadelphia 76ers grabbed the home-court edge in their
first-round playoff series against the Magic. Don't be too quick to
call it an advantage. Orlando tied Cleveland and Boston for the
second-best road record in the NBA this season at 27-14. Game 3 is
tonight.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Tennessee got off to a strong start at the
Penn Relays. The Volunteers began this year's event by beating
Georgetown to win the distance medley at University of
Pennsylvania's Franklin Field yesterday. Tennessee entered this
event the clear favorite after it set a world record during the
indoor season.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles signed restricted
free agent receiver Hank Baskett to a one-year contract yesterday.
Baskett has 71 catches for 1,046 yards and six touchdowns in three
seasons in Philadelphia. The Eagles also signed rookie free agent
tight end Eugene Bright.

CLEVELAND (AP) - The Philadelphia 76ers handed Cleveland its second home loss of the season, 111-110 in overtime last night. The Cavs won 39 at home one shy of tying the 1985-86 Boston Celtics' all-time home record. The Sixers earned the No. 6 spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs and will play the Orlando Magic.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Mike Hampton pitched six shutout innings and the Houston Astros snapped a five-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on last night. The two teams are scheduled to conclude their series this afternoon in Pittsburgh.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Five Villanova University freshmen are in custody after allegedly breaking into the Philadelphia Eagles' stadium and trying to make off with a seat. Police say security cameras spotted the men around 3 a.m. Wednesday at Lincoln Financial Field. Security guards alerted police and the men were arrested.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Almost seemed as if the Pittsburgh Penguins were playing last season's conference finals against the rival Flyers all over again. The Penguins got a goal and an assist each from stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin to defeat Philadelphia last night, 4-1. The series resumes Friday in Pittsburgh.

PHILAELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies were rained out in Washington last night. No makeup date for the game was announced. The team continues its series against the Nationals tonight with Joe Blanton scheduled to take the mound. The team returns home for a four-game set against the San Diego Padres.

UNDATED (AP) - The San Antonio Spurs managed to win the NBA's Southwest Division title, pulling out a 105-98 win over New Orleans in overtime while Houston was losing at Dallas 95-84. Tim Duncan scored six of his 20 points in OT after Michael Finley canned a buzzer-beating three-pointer to extend the game. And Philadelphia won at Cleveland 111-110 in overtime, preventing the Cavaliers from tying the NBA record of 40 home wins in a single regular season.

UNDATED (AP) - The Stanley Cup Playoffs began Wednesday with victories by the New York Rangers, New Jersey Devils, Pittsburgh Penguins and Vancouver Canucks. Brandon Dubinsky provided the game-winner in the third period of the Rangers' 4-3 triumph at Washington, and Zach Parise and Jamie Langenbrunner each had a goal and an assist as the Devils downed Carolina 4-1. Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin also had a goal and an assist as the Pens beat Philadelphia 4-1, and Daniel Sedin scored a goal and set up another to help the Canucks beat St. Louis 2-1.

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Craig MacTavish has been fired as coach of the Edmonton Oilers after the club failed to make the playoffs for the third straight year. The Oilers finished 11th in the Western Conference at 38-35-and-9, three years after reaching the Stanley Cup finals. This was the fifth time in seven seasons they have not reached the postseason.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Tim Wakefield got within five outs of becoming the second-oldest pitcher to throw a major league no-hitter. The 42-year-old knuckleballer held the Oakland Athletics hitless until Kurt Suzuki singled in the eighth inning. Wakefield settled for a four-hitter and an 8-2 win over the A's.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Notre Dame football coach Charlie Weis confirms he talked with his family about quitting at the end of last season, though he says he never thought he'd leave. Weis was responding Wednesday to a story in Sunday's Chicago Tribune that said Weis thought about leaving the Irish and returning to the NFL as a coordinator.

WASHINGTON (AP) - "If you didn't like Harry Kalas, you didn't like anybody." That was the reaction of veteran Milwaukee announcer Bob Uecker to the death of beloved Philadelphia Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas, whose signature home run call "Outta here" will be heard no more. The 73-year-old Kalas died yesterday after being found unconscious in the broadcast booth in Washington before the Phils beat the Nationals 9-8. Kalas joined the Phillies in 1971 after calling Houston Astros games. He was awarded the Baseball Hall of Fame's Ford C. Frick Award for his contributions to the game in 2002. When announcing the death of Kalas, Phillies president David Montgomery said, with his voice cracking, "We lost our voice today." The Kalas family issued a statement saying they were "overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and affection from all of Harry's fans and friends across America. Especially the Phillies fans whom he loved as much as the game of baseball itself."

PENN STATE WINS NIT

STEVE JONES FINAL CALL

NEW YORK (AP) - Penn State turned the NIT championship game into a party, and several thousand Nittany Lions fans sure seemed like the hosts. Jamelle Cornley scored 18 points and the Nittany Lions used a big second half to beat Baylor 69-63 Thursday night to win the NIT
title, just the second postseason tournament championship in school history. Super sophomore Talor Battle added 12 points, all in the second half, for the Nittany Lions (27-11), who were spurred on by raucous chants of "We are ... Penn State," led by none other than Joe Paterno, the 82-year-old football coach sitting about four rows behind the team's bench. LaceDarius Dunn scored 18 points to lead Baylor (24-15), which hadn't won a postseason game since 1950 before its run to the NIT final.
