PITTSBURGH (AP) - Claude Giroux scored short-handed and on a
power play and rookie Sergei Bobrovsky made 26 saves to win in
Pittsburgh for the second time in three weeks, leading the Flyers
to a 3-2 victory over the Penguins.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Al Horford had 20 points and 12 rebounds,
Joe Johnson scored 22 points and Jamal Crawford finished with 19 to
lead the Atlanta Hawks to a 104-101 win over the Philadelphia
76ers. Reserve Andres Nocioni, who scored 15 points, had his
27-footer partially blocked by Josh Smith as time expired, allowing
the Hawks to move to 2-0 after wasting nearly all of a 15-point
lead.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Placido
Polanco has had successful surgery on his injured left elbow.
General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. says Polanco is expected to be
ready for spring training after a doctor removed spurs from the
elbow and repaired a tendon yesterday. Polanco hit .298 with six
homers and 52 RBIs for the NL East champions.

NEW YORK (AP) - Former NBA MVP Allen Iverson has signed a $4
million, two-year contract with Turkish club Besiktas after waiting
in vain all offseason for an offer from an NBA franchise. The
four-time league scoring champion played three games for Memphis
last season before he returned for a second stint with
Philadelphia, where he spent most of his career.

UNDATED (AP) - Allen Iverson has agreed in principle to a $4
million, two-year contract with the Turkish professional team
Besiktas. Iverson is expected to officially sign with the club this
weekend and will begin his overseas career the week of November 8.
His management team put out a release Thursday night. Iverson and
Besiktas officials will hold a press conference in New York on
Friday.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies have cut ties with pitcher
Jamie Moyer, reserve Greg Dobbs and catcher Paul Hoover. The three
elected free agency. It was a procedural move, as Moyer wasn't
expected to return next season. The 47-year-old was 9-9 with a 4.84
ERA in the final season of a $14.5 million contract he signed after
helping Philadelphia win the World Series in 2008.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State appears to be leaning
toward naming Matt McGloin the starter against Michigan on Saturday
nigyht, with Rob Bolden recovering from a possible head injury.
Coach Joe Paterno said Thursday night in a taped segment on the
team's weekly radio show that he would go with McGloin as of
Thursday, and that he would prefer to use just one quarterback.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Japanese eating champion Takeru Kobayashi is
considering chowing down on chicken wings in Philadelphia's bawdy
Wing Bowl. Kobayashi is a six-time champion in the Coney Island
Fourth of July hot dog contest. He took a recruiting trip to Wing
Bowl's site on Thursday where he sampled some of the wings made for
the Super Bowl weekend contest.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Dick's Sporting Goods faces a federal lawsuit
alleging its Nebraska employees weren't justly paid for their work.
Dannette Stackhouse says in her lawsuit that employees were forced
to work through breaks, were unpaid for overtime and were sometimes
locked in the store until work was finished, all in violation of
state law. Dick's says it has more than 420 stores in 41 states.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Finally, it's time for the Pittsburgh Steelers
to take the warmup jacket off Ziggy Hood. He's had two training
camps, two offseasons, a full season and part of another one to
become comfortable with coordinator Dick LeBeau's complicated
defense. Hood is expected to make his first NFL start Sunday at
left defensive end against the Saints.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh
have their first win together with Miami, and the Big Three got
help from some big 3s in the Heat's 97-87 victory over the 76ers
last night. James and the Heat just couldn't squash the Sixers, who
went on a 15-3 run late in the fourth to make it surprisingly
competitive. Evan Turner led the Sixers with 16 points in his first
NBA game.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Martin St. Louis scored the tiebreaking goal
early in the third and added a late empty-netter to help the Tampa
Bay Lightning beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-3 last night.
Pittsburgh got goals from Craig Adams, Matt Cooke and Pascal
Dupuis. The Penguins have lost two in a row.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phillies third baseman Placido Polanco will
have surgery on his left elbow Friday and is expected to be ready
for spring training. Polanco will have bone fragments removed from
his elbow, in addition to having his extensor tendon repaired. He
is expected to need eight to 10 weeks of recovery.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - After four years with the Phillies, reliever
J.C. Romero is set to become a free agent after the team declined
its $4.5 million club option on the left-hander. He will get a
$250,000 buyout. Phillies GM Ruben Amaro, Junior says Romero had
"some struggles" this season, but adds that the team isn't ruling
out bringing him back at a lower salary.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State backup quarterback Matt
McGloin could move up the depth chart this weekend if starter Rob
Bolden isn't cleared to play for Michigan. The freshman Bolden got
knocked out of last week's Minnesota game with a possible head
injury. McGloin and Kevin Newsome have been splitting first-team
reps in practice, but McGloin was off the bench first last Saturday
after Bolden left.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh junior forward Nasir Robinson had
surgery to repair torn cartilage in his right knee and is expected
to be sidelined up to six weeks. The 6-foot-5 Robinson started all
34 games last season, averaging 6.6 points and 5.6 rebounds as Pitt
reached the second round of the NCAA tournament.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The Flyers have lost four of five after a
2-1 setback to Columbus last night. The Blue Jackets built a 2-0
lead and were able to fend off a wild onslaught by the Flyers in
the third period when Philadelphia outshot the Jackets 12-4. Ville
Leino scored his second goal of the year for the Flyers.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Penguins have assigned forward Eric
Tangradi and defenseman Andrew Hutchinson to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton,
clearing the way for forward Arron Asham to be activated for
tomorrow's game at Tampa Bay. Asham has been out since injuring his
left shoulder late in the preseason.

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) - A former NFL vice president of officiating
says the only mistake made by the crew working the
Dolphins-Steelers game was to initially award a touchdown to Ben
Roethlisberger on a pivotal play late in the fourth quarter. After
that, former league executive Mike Pereira says the crew handled
the situation correctly.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Eagles coach Andy Reid says Philadelphia
quarterback Michael Vick is expected back and will start against
the Colts on November 7th. Vick has missed the last three games
with cartilage damage in his rib cage. Reid says he expects his
team to be as healthy as they possibly can be when they return from
the bye week.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies have cleaned out their lockers
and have broken up for the season following Saturday night's
season-ending loss to the Giants in the NL championship series.
Phillies slugger Jayson Werth says he'd be willing to return to the
team, but he wants to test the free agency waters first.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pitt basketball coach Jamie Dixon initially
feared there were no survivors when he hastily stopped his car to
pull a woman through a broken windshield of a sport utility vehicle
that crashed in front of him. Dixon was the first motorist to pull
over after the wreck took place Saturday night on Interstate-279
north of Pittsburgh. He suffered minor cuts pulling a woman out of
one vehicle.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - USA Swimming says it will open
its own investigation into the death of open-water swimmer Fran
Crippen at a World Cup event in the United Arab Emirates. The
organization says it will examine exactly what happened to Crippen,
who's from suburban Philadelphia.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - Villanova has edged up a spot in the
FCS coaches poll, to number 5, after beating James Madison over the
weekend, 14-7. Penn moved up two spots, to number 21. Four
Pennsylvania schools make this week's Division II poll: California
University fell from 3rd to 12th after a loss to Mercyhurst.
Mercyhurst is now number 24, while Bloomsburg and Kutztown also are
ranked.

MIAMI (AP) - An officiating mistake negated a late fumble at the
goal line by Ben Roethlisberger, and the Pittsburgh Steelers kicked
the game-winning field goal on the next play. Jeff Reed made an
18-yarder with 2:30 left, and the Steelers escaped with a 23-22
win.

MIAMI (AP) - The Steelers lost three starters with injuries in
yesterday's game against Miami, including two players from their
league-leading defense. Defensive end Aaron Smith torn the triceps
in his left arm, and linebacker LaMarr Woodley was sidelined in the
first half by a hamstring injury.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Kerry Collins threw three touchdowns to
Kenny Britt, who had the best game of his career two days after
being involved in a bar fight, and the Titans scored 27 unanswered
points in the fourth quarter to beat the Eagles 37-19 yesterday.
The Eagles blew a 19-10 lead despite sacking Collins three times
and forcing him into three turnovers.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Philadelphia coach Andy Reid is
switching quarterbacks again and says Michael Vick will start
November 7th against Indianapolis in the Eagles' next game after
their bye week. Vick was the third quarterback during yesterday's
loss to Tennessee as he recovered from injured rib cartilage.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Having the best record in baseball meant
little in October for the Phillies. The two-time defending NL
champions came up short in a year where nothing less than a World
Series title is considered success. Heavy favorites to win their
third straight pennant, the Phillies were eliminated in six games
by the San Francisco Giants.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Columbus midfielder Eddie Gaven set up a
penalty, assisted on a goal and made two saves to help the Crew
beat Philadelphia 3-1 in their regular season finale yesterday. The
Union wrapped up their inaugural season with eight wins, 15 losses
and seven ties.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - A University of Pittsburgh spokesman says
men's basketball coach Jamie Dixon helped rescue two men from a car
accident near the city. Athletics spokesman Greg Hotchkiss says
Dixon was heading north on Interstate 279 Saturday night when a car
swerved, hit a guardrail and flipped over.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) - United Arab Emirates swimming
officials are citing "overexertion" as the cause of U.S. national
team swimmer Fran Crippen's death and deny reports that the
American had a heart attack during a race in the country. The
26-year-old from suburban Philadelphia died Saturday while
competing in the FINA Open Water 10-kilometer World Cup.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The Phillies are on the brink of
elimination following a gut-wrenching 6-5 loss in San Francisco
that gave the Giants a 3 games to 1 lead in the NLCS. They'll send
Roy Halladay against Tim Lincecum in Game 5 tonight - it's a
rematch of aces that Lincecum won in the opener.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid says
Kevin Kolb will be his starting quarterback for Sunday's game
against the Tennessee Titans. It will be the third straight start
for Kolb, and the fourth straight game in which he has seen
extensive action, in the wake of the rib injury Michael Vick
suffered in an October 3rd loss to Washington.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers linebacker James Harrison didn't
practice yesterday after meeting with coach Mike Tomlin about the
$75,000 fine Harrison incurred for a helmet hit on a Browns
receiver. Harrison has made it clear he's upset about the fine.
ESPN is reporting Harrison is considering retirement over the
issue.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers linebacker James Harrison has been
credited with half a sack on his concussion-causing hit that
sidelined Browns wide receiver Joshua Cribbs. Harrison lowered his
head and slammed his helmet into the left side of Cribbs' helmet as
Cribbs fumbled while running a wildcat formation play during the
second quarter of Pittsburgh's 28-10 victory on Sunday.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia's Jason Kapono and Andre
Iguodala scored 20 points each and the 76ers closed their preseason
schedule with a 118-91 victory over the New York Knicks last night.
Lou Williams added 18 while Elton Brand had 16 points and 11
rebounds for the Sixers, who open the regular season next week at
home against the Miami Heat.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia 76ers coach Doug Collins sat
out for the second straight game because of symptoms related to a
concussion he suffered on Memorial Day. Collins underwent tests
yesterday and his next scheduled on-court activity is scheduled for
tomorrow's practice.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - With Penn State mired in a
disappointing football season, coach Joe Paterno admits the Nittany
Lions have a "lot of holes" right now. To try to motivate his
players, Paterno dispensed with first and second-team practice
jerseys last week hoping to open up the competition to play --
although in the end only some injury moves were made.

NEW YORK (AP) - Pittsburgh is the Big East coaches' choice in
their preseason poll. The Panthers returns four starters from a
team that finished 25-9 last season and was second in the league
with a 13-5 mark. Villanova was the second choice in the 16-team
conference, followed by Syracuse, Georgetown, West Virginia, St.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Cody Ross came through with another key hit
this postseason, Matt Cain dazzled to outduel Cole Hamels and the
Giants beat the Phillies 3-0 on Tuesday to take a 2-1 lead in the
NL championship series. Game 4 is tonight, with Madison Bumgarner
starting for the Giants against Joe Blanton.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers linebacker James Harrison has been
fined $75,000 by the NFL for his helmet-leading hit that caused
Browns wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi to receive a concussion.
Harrison was not suspended. The fine came as the league announced
it would begin suspending players for dangerous and flagrant hits.
Harrison was not penalized on the play.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers defensive end Brett Keisel will sit
out Sunday's game at Miami with a left hamstring injury. Keisel was
injured during the first quarter of the Steelers' 28-10 victory
against Cleveland on Sunday and did not return. Coach Mike Tomlin
says either Nick Eason or former first-round draft pick Ziggy Hood
will replace Keisel.

CINCINNATI (AP) - J.J. Hickson led a balanced Cleveland scoring
attack with 22 points and added 11 rebounds as the Cavaliers
cruised to a 111-95 preseason victory over the 76ers last night.
Andre Iguodala led Philadelphia with 19 points. Rookie Evan Turner
scored four points in his first game back in the state where he was
last year's consensus player of the year at Ohio State.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Flyers' defenseman Matt Walker needs hip
surgery and is expected to miss more than two months. General
manager Paul Holmgren says Walker needs surgery to repair a torn
labrum and what he called a "boney impingement" in his right hip.
Walker is expected to miss 10 to 12 weeks.

CANONSBURG, Pa. (AP) - Penguins forward Jordan Staal is
practicing with the team for the first time since May. Staal was
unable to work out all summer because of recurring infections in

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State defensive end Sean Stanley
has been charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession. University
police say the 19-year-old sophomore was charged Monday with having
a small amount of marijuana stemming from a police call to his
on-campus apartment in late September. He has been held out of the
past two games.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State may get three injured
linebackers back for this week's game against Minnesota. Coach Joe
Paterno says that Gerald Hodges, Michael Mauti and Bani Gbadyu have
returned to practice and should be ready Saturday as the Nittany
Lions try to end a two-game losing skid.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pitt players and staff, saddened by the news
that Rutgers player Eric LeGrand has no movement below the neck,
will display a large banner supporting the defensive lineman during
Saturday's game against the Scarlet Knights. The players, Pitt
students and other university employees will sign the banner.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Sidney Crosby and Mark Letestu scored
power-play goals in the first period and the Penguins won their
third in a row by beating the slow-starting Ottawa Senators 5-2
last night. Evgeni Malkin also scored as the Penguins won their
fourth in five games since losing three of their first four games.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - For the third straight game, there's a
marquee pitching matchup on tap in the National League championship
series. Philadelphia's 2008 World Series MVP Cole Hamels takes on
the Giants' Matt Cain in San Francisco this afternoon. The series
is tied at a game apiece.

BEREA, Ohio (AP) - Browns tight end Benjamin Watson called the
vicious hits that Pittsburgh's James Harrison made on two Cleveland
wide receivers "illegal" and said the NFL should come down hard
on the Steelers linebacker. Browns coach Eric Mangini said Joshua
Cribbs and Mohamed Massaquoi both sustained concussions from the
violent helmet-to-helmet hits delivered by Harrison in Sunday's
game.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Eagles coach Andy Reid says it will be a
"real stretch" for receiver DeSean Jackson to play Sunday against
Tennessee after suffering a concussion. Jackson was injured in a
nasty head-on collision with Atlanta cornerback Dunta Robinson.
Reid also says Kevin Kolb will likely start at quarterback against
the Titans.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia 76ers are counting on Doug
Collins to lead them out of the bottom half of the NBA. Collins can
rely on previous experience that he'll do it again. The Sixers will
need patience to contend for the championship. They boast one of
the rawest backcourts in the league in Evan Turner and Jrue
Holiday.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - The roller coaster that is the Penn
State men's basketball team wants to climb back to respectability.
After last year's 20-loss campaign, most anything will be an
improvement for a program that tumbled from the 2009 NIT
championship back to Big Ten also-ran status thanks in part to a
spate of close losses.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Louisville at Pittsburgh game will start
at noon Eastern on Saturday, October 30th and will be televised as
the Big East game of the week on ESPN Regional. Each of Pitt's next
two home games will start at noon. The Panthers play Rutgers on
Saturday.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez says the
team's bye week is coming at a good time for at least a few
banged-up Wolverines. Denard Robinson has a sprained right
shoulder, while center David Molk and defensive tackle Mike Martin
have ankle injuries. Rodriguez says he hopes the three key players
will be healthy enough to play October 30th at Penn State.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Roy Oswalt pitched eight dominant innings,
Jimmy Rollins drove in four runs and the Philadelphia Phillies beat
the San Francisco Giants 6-1 Sunday night to even the NL
championship series at one game apiece. Oswalt allowed one run and
three hits, striking out nine. He also had a hit and scored a run
on a mad dash through the third base coach's stop sign.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies left for San Francisco
immediately after last night's win over the Giants. The NLCS
resumes tomorrow afternoon, when Matt Cain faces Philadelphia's
Cole Hamels, the 2008 World Series MVP.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phillies slugger Ryan Howard spent part of
his day watching the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field in one end
zone. He led a cheer and then hitched a ride with the Phillie
Phanatic, riding on the back of the furry green mascot's
four-wheeler to get to the ballpark.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ben Roethlisberger shook off the rust from his
four-game suspension to throw three touchdown passes, and the
Pittsburgh Steelers shut down a depleted Cleveland Browns offense
during a 28-10 victory yesterday. Hines Ward's 8-yard touchdown
catch in the third quarter made it 14-3 and gave the Steelers'
defense all the points needed on a mostly dominating day.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger
received a loud ovation while being introduced minutes before the
opening kickoff against Cleveland. Roethlisberger flashed a Number
1 gesture with his left index finger as numerous fans at Heinz
Field stood and cheered. He was suspended for the first four games
of the season for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jeremy Maclin and DeSean Jackson each scored
two touchdowns as the Philadelphia Eagles snapped Atlanta's
four-game winning streak with a 31-17 victory yesterday. A head-on
collision in the second quarter cost Philadelphia star receiver
Jackson, who suffered a head injury. Philadelphia ensured it would
stay atop the NFC East, while the Falcons fell to 4-2.

NEW YORK (AP) - Millions of Cablevision customers in the New
York and Philadelphia region remain without Fox's channels and
programming after a second day of negotiations over disputed rates
has ended without an agreement. Cablevision and Fox parent News
Corp. broke off talks yesterday afternoon. Fox spokesman Scott
Grogin said they would meet again today.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Flyers were edged by Tampa Bay 3-2 last
night during an emotional return for Simon Gagne. Gagne, a playoff
hero last season in the Flyers' run to the Stanley Cup finals,
spent the first 10 seasons of his career with Philadelphia before
being dealt to Tampa Bay during the summer to clear salary cap
space. Nikolay Zherdev and Danny Briere scored for Philadelphia.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Penguins defenseman Zbynek Michalek and
forward Arron Asham are expected to be out about two weeks with
shoulder injuries. Michalek hurt his right shoulder Monday at New
Jersey and sat out Wednesday against Toronto. Asham injured his
left shoulder late in the preseason and did not play during the
first week of the regular season.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Former Blue Jays manager Carlos Tosca, just
hired as new Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez's bench coach,
has interviewed for the Pittsburgh Pirates manager's job. Tosca is
the seventh candidate to interview with the Pirates since John
Russell was fired on October 4th. Among the group was John Gibbons,
who succeeded Tosca as Toronto's manager.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - With Ben Roethlisberger returning Sunday
against the Browns, the Pittsburgh Steelers are making a change on
offense. Wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, held out the last three
games so fellow rookie Antonio Brown could return kicks, is
expected to be among the active players on Sunday.

BEREA, Ohio (AP) - Browns coach Eric Mangini was pleased with
Colt McCoy's first practice as a potential starter and said his
lean is "more pronounced" to the rookie quarterback making his
NFL debut Sunday in Pittsburgh. McCoy has risen up the depth chart
following injuries to Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace, who are
nursing ankle injuries and could be out for several weeks.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Cleveland's J.J. Hickson had 18 points and
nine rebounds, and the Cavaliers beat the Spurs 106-80 last night
in the third quarter of the game at the University of Pittsburgh's
Petersen Events Center. Gary Neal had 10 points and former Pitt
star and Pittsburgh native DeJuan Blair nine points and 11 rebounds
for the Spurs.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Woody Peoples, a former Pro Bowl offensive
lineman who played for the San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia
Eagles from 1968-80, died on Tuesday in his hometown of Birmingham,
Alabama, at the age of 67. Peoples was a member of the Eagles 1980
NFC Championship team, and was the starting guard in Super Bowl 15.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Toronto's Clarke MacArthur scored twice and
the Maple Leafs withstood Sidney Crosby's first goal of the season
to keep the Penguins winless in their new arena, beating Pittsburgh
4-3 last night. Pittsburgh is 1-3 overall and 0-3 in the Consol
Energy Center, which opened last week as the replacement for the
49-year-old Civic Arena.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Flyers are moving up the start time of
their home game against the Penguins on Saturday night to avoid a
full conflict with the Philadelphia Phillies' playoff game across
the street. The Flyers and Penguins will face off at 6 p.m. - one
hour earlier than the scheduled start time. The Phillies and Giants
get going at 7:57 p.m.

TORONTO (AP) - Toronto's DeMar DeRozan scored the winning basket
with 35 seconds to play and the Raptors beat the Philadelphia 76ers
119-116 in double overtime in exhibition play last night.
Philadelphia's Louis Williams had a 3-pointer rim out in the final
seconds as the 76ers lost for the fourth time in five preseason
games.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Giants manager Bruce Bochy is planning to
tweak his rotation for the NL championship series, moving up
left-hander Jonathan Sanchez to go Game 2 against the Philadelphia
Phillies following ace Tim Lincecum. Bochy said he would do so to
break up the two right-handers - Lincecum and Matt Cain, who now is
likely to pitch Game 3 back in San Francisco on Tuesday.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Former Pirates minor league manager Dale Sveum
has interviewed to succeed John Russell as Pittsburgh's manager.
Sveum, a Pirates infielder in 1996-97, managed Double-A Altoona
from 2001-03. He spent two seasons as a coach with the Red Sox
before moving to the Brewers' staff.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Eagles coach Andy Reid has not ruled out
quarterback Michael Vick for Sunday's game against his old team the
Atlanta Falcons. Kevin Kolb is still expected to start in place of
Vick, who is recovering from a rib cartilage injury, but Reid says
that Vick could return to practice by the end of the week.

BEREA, Ohio (AP) - The Cleveland Browns have traded disgruntled
running back Jerome Harrison to the Philadelphia Eagles for running
back Mike Bell. Harrison has been upset with his role this year. He
ran for just 6 yards on six carries last week in a loss to Atlanta.
Bell has gained only 28 yards on 16 tries this season.

DETROIT (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch has
been ordered to pay $689,000 and interest in a real estate deal
that turned sour in Detroit. In 2006, Batch personally guaranteed
$880,000 in loans granted to Cortland Place LLC for a 60-unit,
four-story apartment building. Cortland defaulted two years later,
and the property was sold for $280,000.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Several thousand Pirates rooters gathered
yesterday at the spot where Forbes Field stood on October 13th,
1960. They were there to mark the 50th anniversary of Bill
Mazeroski's historic homer in the ninth inning gave the underdog
Pirates a 10-9 victory over the Yankees in Game 7 of the World

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - When the Philadelphia Phillies and San
Francisco Giants meet in the NL championship series, runs won't
come easy. The teams have perhaps the two best starting rotations
in the majors. For the Phillies, it's Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt and
Cole Hamels. For the Giants, it's Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain and
Jonathan Sanchez. Game 1 is Saturday night in Philadelphia.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Former Brewers manager Ken Macha and Jeff
Banister have interviewed as the Pittsburgh Pirates search for
their next manager. Macha, a Pittsburgh-area native, was fired this
month after going 157-167 in two seasons with Milwaukee. Banister
has been in the Pirates' organization for 25 years as a player,
minor league manager and coach.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers coach Mike Tomlin doesn't care if his
players are avid social media users. Just as long as they don't
talk shop. Although quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's return from a
four-game suspension is certain to be a subject of locker room
conversation this week, Tomlin doesn't want his players posting
messages on Twitter, Facebook or similar sites about any
team-related issues.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Sixers have their first preseason win
after Marreese Speights scored 19 points and Lou Williams added 16
to lead the Philadelphia over the Boston Celtics 103-92 last night.
Jason Kapono and Jrue Holiday had 12 points each for the Sixers,
who lost 93-65 to the Celtics last week in New Hampshire.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - The heat is on Joe Paterno to turn
things around at injury-riddled Penn State after two lackluster
losses. The Nittany Lions are 3-3 and are off Saturday. The offense
has trouble scoring and the short-handed defense has numerous
players sidelined.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State safety Nick Sukay is out
for the year with a torn pectoral muscle in the latest setback for
a struggling team hit by a spate of injuries. Coach Joe Paterno
says that Sukay's season was done after the junior got hurt during
a tackle on Illinois' Jack Ramsey on the opening kickoff of last
week's 33-13 loss to the Illini.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pitt's offense is built around running the
football, so the Panthers' dilemma wouldn't seem to be much of a
problem at all. They have two running backs capable of reeling off
100-yard games. Dion Lewis did it enough times last season that he
was chosen as a second-team All-American. Ray Graham has done it
three times in the Panthers' last four games.

CHESTER, Pa. (AP) - With the United States experimenting again
with a new formation, the Americans finished the home portion of
their 2010 schedule with a dull 0-0 draw against Colombia last
night in Chester. The draw extends their three-year winless streak
against South American opponents to nine matches.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Alex Goligoski and Mark Letestu scored goals
within a three-minute span covering the first and second periods to
lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 3-1 victory over the undermanned
New Jersey Devils yesterday. The Devils played the game with a
franchise-low 15 healthy skaters due to injuries to Anton
Volchenkov and Brian Rolston.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jeff Carter scored his second goal of the
game with 2:38 left in the third period to lift the Philadelphia
Flyers to a 4-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche last night. Carter
snapped a tie when his shot bounced through the legs of goalie
Craig Anderson. Darroll Powe added an empty-netter only moments
later on the night the Flyers raised their Eastern Conference
champions banner.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - With San Francisco closing out Atlanta 3-2
last night in the National League division series, the Phillies' NL
Championship Series matchup is all set. The Giants will be in
Philadelphia for Game 1 Saturday night.

manager Eric Wedge and former Arizona and Florida coach Bo Porter
in interviewing.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Eagles coach Andy Reid says defensive tackle
Brodrick Bunkley needs elbow surgery and will likely miss the rest
of the season. Bunkley was injured in Philadelphia's 27-24 win at

Bunkley's injury on his radio show last night on WIP-AM.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) - Atlanta Falcons coach Mike Smith says
starting receiver Michael Jenkins has been medically cleared to
play Sunday in Philadelphia. Jenkins returned to practice three
weeks ago but missed all of preseason and the first five games
after injury his shoulder in an August 6th team scrimmage.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State forward Sasa Borovnjak will
miss this season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in
his right knee. The team says the injury occurred without any
contact during a team workout last week. Preseason practice
officially begins Friday.

CHESTER, Pa. (AP) - Defender Steve Cherundolo is returning to
his club in Germany and won't play in the U.S. game against
Colombia tonight in Chester. Cherundolo was allowed yesterday to go
back to Hannover, which is currently third in the Bundesliga and
travels to Bayern Munich this weekend.

CINCINNATI (AP) - Cole Hamels tossed a five-hit masterpiece,
striking out nine, to steer the Philadelphia Phillies into the
National League Championship Series for the third straight year.
The Phillies blanked the Reds 2-0 to complete the three-game sweep
and now await the winner of the San Francisco-Atlanta series in the
NLCS beginning Saturday in Philadelphia.

ATLANTA (AP) - The San Francisco Giants can close out Atlanta
with a victory in Game 4 of that NLDS tonight when they send out
rookie Madison Bumgarner against Braves 16-game winner Derek Lowe.
The Giants rallied for a 3-2 victory yesterday, scoring two runs in
the ninth with the help of Brooks Conrad's third error of the game.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Tampa Bay Rays avoided elimination
twice in Texas, including a 5-2 over the demoralized Rangers, who
have never won a postseason series. Game 5 is Tuesday night at
Tropicana Field with Rangers ace left-hander Cliff Lee opposing the
Rays' 19-game winner David Price in a rematch of Game 1 starters
with the best-of-five series knotted two games apiece.

FONTANA, Calif. (AP) - Tony Stewart won yesterday's Sprint Cup
race in Southern California and vaulted five spots to fifth place
in the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship, 107 points behind
leader Jimmy Johnson. Johnson, who is trying for an unprecedented
fifth straight Sprint Cup driving championship, leads Denny Hamlin
by 36 points with six races left in the Chase.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The Oakland Raiders have finally beaten
San Diego 35-27, posting their first victory over the Chargers
since 2003, ending a string of 13 straight losses. That was the
second longest active streak to Buffalo's 14-game losing streak to
New England.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Tim Lincecum (LINZ'-ih-kuhm) tossed a
two-hitter and fanned a Giants postseason-record 14 in hurling the
San Francisco Giants past Atlanta 1-0 in the opener of that
National League Division Series. Game 2 of that NLDS is tonight
with 13-game winner Matt Cain going for the Giants against Tommy
Hanson.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The New York Yankees-Minnesota Twins series
has a day off today, and do the Twins ever need it. The Twins find
themselves down 2-0 after losing their 11th straight postseason
game and eighth in a row to the Yanks, 5-2 last night, as Lance
Berkman homered and drove in two runs to help Andy Pettitte win his
19th career postseason game.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - The Tampa Bay Rays are another team
needing a day off, and they're getting one today as well. The Texas
Rangers, who've never won a postseason series, need just one
victory in Texas after blanking the Rays 6-0 yesterday to take a
2-0 series lead.

DENVER (AP) - The Chicago Blackhawks opened defense of their
Stanley Cup crown by losing 4-3 in overtime to the Colorado
Avalanche. Paul Stastny scored twice, including the game-winner
with 1:20 left in OT, for the Avs.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) - The seventh-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers
improved to 5-and-0 after ending a 99-year rivalry with Kansas
State by thrashing the outmanned Wildcats 48-13. Nebraska
quarterback Taylor Martinez rushed for 242 yards and four
touchdowns and now has run for 737 yards in his first five games, a
record for Nebraska quarterbacks.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia's Roy Halladay was making just
his first postseason start yesterday, but he did a better job than
almost any pitcher ever to start in the postseason. By shutting out
the Reds 4-0 in Game 1 of the NLDS, the Phillies ace threw just the
second postseason no-hitter in baseball history and the first one
since Don Larsen's perfect game for the Yankees in the 1956 World
Series.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phillies third baseman Placido Polanco was
out of the starting lineup for Game 1 of the NL division series
because of a sore back. Wilson Valdez played third and batted
eighth against the Cincinnati Reds yesterday. Manager Charlie
Manuel says Polanco felt stiff during a workout on Tuesday.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Penguins officially open their brand-new
arena tonight when they take on the Flyers in the season opener for
both teams. With more than 18,000 seats, the Consol Energy Center
will make its debut hosting the Penguins' 167th consecutive sellout
crowd.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Penguins have assigned forward Eric
Tangradi to Wheeling of the ECHL, only hours after he skated on
their second line in practice. The Penguins did not explain why
they demoted Tangradi, who was expected to play on a line with
Evgeni Malkin and Mike Comrie during tonight's opener against
Philadelphia.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Flyers had the Stanley Cup in their
arena. They saw it hoisted, passed around, shaken in celebration -
and then packed on a plane headed toward Chicago. This season, the
Flyers want to be the team drinking from the Stanley Cup. Coach
Peter Laviolette says the team is ready to build off the unlikely
postseason run and contend all year.

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) - Boston's Shaquille O'Neal scored eight
points in his debut with the Celtics and the defending Eastern
Conference champions opened their preseason with a 93-65 victory
over the 76ers last night. Thaddeus Young led the Sixers with 17.
Philadelphia coach Doug Collins gave Elton Brand and Andre Iguodala
the night off.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers players have voted to give
the NFL Players Association their backing to decertify the union in
the event of a labor lockout next year. The Steelers are at least
the 10th group of players to vote to decertify if necessary,
joining players from the Packers, Bengals, Bills, Colts, Cowboys,
Saints, Eagles, Redskins and Giants.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Beating Notre Dame for a third consecutive
season might be a lot easier for Pittsburgh if it had the Dion
Lewis of last season. Lewis, a returning 1,799-yard rusher, hasn't
lost his starting job - yet - even though Ray Graham is coming off
three consecutive 100-yard games and has outrushed Lewis 492-193.
Pitt takes on the Irish Saturday.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Roy Halladay has spent plenty of Octobers at
home, wishing for this opportunity. Halladay will take the ball
when the Philadelphia Phillies host the Cincinnati Reds in Game 1
of their NL division series today. Edinson Volquez will start for
the NL Central champion Reds, who are in the playoffs for the first
time since 1995.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ten seconds were all Ben Roethlisberger needed
to prove to the Pittsburgh Steelers he wasn't affected by his month
away from the NFL. On the first pass he threw yesterday in his
first post-suspension practice, Roethlisberger found fast wide
receiver Mike Wallace far downfield.

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) - The 76ers dropped their preseason opener
103-96 to the New Jersey Nets in a matchup played in Roanoke,
Virginia. Marreese Speights scored 19 points and Elton Brand added
15 for Philadelphia, which shot just 2 of 18 from 3-point range in
its debut under new coach Doug Collins. Top draft pick Evan Turner
poured in 12.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Former Indians manager Eric Wedge is the first
managerial candidate to interview with the Pittsburgh Pirates as
they seek John Russell's successor. The Indians won more than 80
games four times and twice won more than 90 under Wedge from
2003-09. He was fired following a 65-97 season a year ago.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Penguins have waived forward
Ryan Craig and defenseman Andrew Hutchinson. Both players are
expected to be assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AHL) if they
clear waivers. They were signed as free agents during the
offseason.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Slow starts and poor productivity in
the red zone have left Penn State's offense a statistical mess. The
Nittany Lions are last in the Big Ten in scoring at 19 points a
game. Coach Joe Paterno says the inconsistent offensive line is
partly to blame for scoring troubles.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt knows what to
expect Saturday when his Panthers meet Notre Dame. He's seen it
before from Irish coach Brian Kelly when they used to meet up in
the Big East. Kelly is in his first year with Notre Dame after
leaving Cincinnati last year.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) - Lucky Chucky and Muscle Massive have
been made the favorites for this weekend's $500,000 Breeders Crown
for 3-year-old trotters at Pocono Downs. Lucky Chucky is the 7-5
favorite from post Number 4 and Muscle Massive is 7-2 and leaves
from post Number 7 in one of 12 Breeders Crown races Saturday with
a total purse of $6 million.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Big Ben is back on the practice field for the
Steelers. Ben Roethlisberger says he never got comfortable watching
Pittsburgh play during his suspension. The Steelers are off this
weekend, so Roethlisberger will have two full weeks of work before
taking on Cleveland on October 17th.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Michael Vick has a rib cartilage injury, and
his status is uncertain for Philadelphia's next game at San
Francisco. Eagles coach Andy Reid says Vick doesn't have any broken
bones, though the cartilage between his second and third rib might
be cracked.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates have fired manager John Russell,
whose teams equaled a franchise record by losing 299 games in three
seasons. Not since the mid-1950s have the Pirates been as bad as
they were under Russell, who had records of 67-95 in 2008, 62-99 in
2009 and 57-105 this season.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Second baseman Neil Walker is the first rookie
to be the outright winner of the Roberto Clemente Award, which is
presented each season by Pittsburgh baseball writers to the
Pirates' outstanding player. The Pittsburgh area native hit .296
with 12 homers, 66 RBIS and a .349 on-base percentage in 110 games.

NEW YORK (AP) - The Rangers say they have agreed to terms with
former Penguins forward Ruslan Fedotenko. The 31-year-old left wing
had one goal and six assists in five games with New York during the
preseason, topping his new club in points. Fedotenko had 11 goals
and 30 points in 80 games with Pittsburgh last season.

MILAN (AP) - Inter Milan center back Ivan Cordoba has been
diagnosed with a muscle strain in his left leg and will miss
Colombia's exhibition against the United States in Chester. Cordoba
was hurt in the first half of a 0-0 tie with Juventus on Sunday
night, and medical tests yesterday revealed the extent of the
injury.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Baltimore's Joe Flacco withstood Pittsburgh's
goal-line stand and go-ahead touchdown in the closing minutes to
throw an 18-yard scoring pass to T.J. Houshmandzadeh with 32
seconds remaining to knock off the Steelers 17-14. The Steelers
appeared to have the game locked up after turning away the Ravens
at the 2-yard-line with just over 2 minutes left.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Donovan McNabb made enough plays to help the
Washington Redskins beat the Eagles 17-12 Sunday in the
quarterback's return to Philadelphia. Kevin Kolb, originally
scheduled to be McNabb's successor, played most of the game after
starter Michael Vick hurt his ribs and chest.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Eagles quarterback Michael Vick will have an
MRI today on his injured ribs and chest. Vick scrambled 23 yards,
but was sandwiched on a hard hit by a pair of Redskins and was slow
to get up late in the first quarter of yesterday's loss to
Washington.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Donovan McNabb drew a standing ovation from
the Philadelphia fans after being introduced before yesterday's
game. Nearly everyone in the stadium stood and cheered the
Redskins' new quarterback as he returned to his former home field.
McNabb hugged his successor, Michael Vick, near the 40-yard line,
and he raised his right arm to salute the folks in the stands.

ATLANTA (AP) - The Atlanta Braves are in the playoffs as the NL
wild-card team after edging the Phillies 8-7 yesterday in the final
game of the regular season. After beating the Phillies, the Braves
watched on TV in their clubhouse as San Francisco beat San Diego
3-0, giving the Braves the NL wild card by one game over San Diego.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies will open the postseason
Wednesday against the Cincinnati Reds in the National League
Division Series. Atlanta heads to San Francisco Thursday to take on
the Giants in the other division series.

MIAMI (AP) - Florida's Dan Uggla homered and drove in three runs
Sunday, sending the Pittsburgh Pirates to their 105th and final
defeat when they lost to the Florida Marlins 5-2. The Pirates
finished their record-extending 18th consecutive losing season at
57-105, worst in the majors. The only time the Pirates had more
defeats in baseball's modern era was in 1952, when they went
42-112.

DETROIT (AP) - Mike Comrie scored twice and Evgeni Malkin had a
goal and three assists in the Pittsburgh Penguins' 5-2 win over the
Detroit Red Wings yesterday in the final exhibition game for each
team. Chris Kunitz and Alex Goligoski each added a goal and an
assist for Pittsburgh, and Marc-Andre Fleury made 22 saves.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - The Buffalo Sabres scored eight straight
times to beat the Philadelphia Flyers 9-3 in an exhibition game
yesterday. The nine goals were the most scored by one team during
the preseason. Philadelphia's Mike Testwuide finally snapped the
streak with a goal 49 seconds into the third period.
