NEW YORK (AP) — John Mitchell and Brad Richards scored 90 seconds apart in New York's four-goal second period, and the Rangers held on to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 last night for their third consecutive win. Ryan Callahan and Marian Gaborik both had a goal and assist in the period, and Richards added two assists as New York won its seventh straight at home and 10th in 12 games overall.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin says safety Troy Polamalu is free of concussion symptoms and "all things are positive" for the AFC North showdown with the Cincinnati Bengals. Polamalu left Sunday's 13-9 win at Kansas City when his helmet struck Steve Maneri's knee.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Coaches on the Philadelphia Eagles are showing more fight than their players. Defensive line coach Jim Washburn and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg had a heated exchange during Sunday's loss to New England that required a follow-up talk with head coach Andy Reid. Reid says, "Things happen, it's an emotional game."
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — The lawyer for a young man described by prosecutors as a sexual abuse victim of former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky says he's been distressed to hear Sandusky's attorney dispute the charges. Slade McLaughlin says his client stands by the allegations and sees the strategy as putting him on trial instead of Sandusky. The young man is described as Victim 1 in the grand jury report.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Court hearings have been delayed for two Penn State administrators charged with lying to a grand jury investigating child sex abuse allegations against former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. Athletic director Tim Curley is on administrative leave, while Gary Schultz has retired as a vice president. Officials say their preliminary hearings have been pushed back to December16th.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Zack Rosen had 20 points, five assists and played the entire game, as Penn outlasted Manhattan 75-72 last night. Miles Cartwright had 14 points and three steals and the Quakers snapped a three-game losing streak.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon tries to treat his team's annual game against crosstown rival Duquesne as just another nonconference matchup. The players on both sides beg to differ. The 17th-ranked Panthers and the Dukes spend the summer playing with and against each other in pickup games. They know the other's tendencies, their strengths and their weaknesses.
