NEW YORK (AP) — John Mitchell and Brad Richards scored 90 seconds apart in New York's four-goal second period, and the Rangers held on to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 last night for their third consecutive win. Ryan Callahan and Marian Gaborik both had a goal and assist in the period, and Richards added two assists as New York won its seventh straight at home and 10th in 12 games overall.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin says safety Troy Polamalu is free of concussion symptoms and "all things are positive" for the AFC North showdown with the Cincinnati Bengals. Polamalu left Sunday's 13-9 win at Kansas City when his helmet struck Steve Maneri's knee.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Coaches on the Philadelphia Eagles are showing more fight than their players. Defensive line coach Jim Washburn and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg had a heated exchange during Sunday's loss to New England that required a follow-up talk with head coach Andy Reid. Reid says, "Things happen, it's an emotional game."

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — The lawyer for a young man described by prosecutors as a sexual abuse victim of former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky says he's been distressed to hear Sandusky's attorney dispute the charges. Slade McLaughlin says his client stands by the allegations and sees the strategy as putting him on trial instead of Sandusky. The young man is described as Victim 1 in the grand jury report.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Court hearings have been delayed for two Penn State administrators charged with lying to a grand jury investigating child sex abuse allegations against former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. Athletic director Tim Curley is on administrative leave, while Gary Schultz has retired as a vice president. Officials say their preliminary hearings have been pushed back to December16th.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Zack Rosen had 20 points, five assists and played the entire game, as Penn outlasted Manhattan 75-72 last night. Miles Cartwright had 14 points and three steals and the Quakers snapped a three-game losing streak.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon tries to treat his team's annual game against crosstown rival Duquesne as just another nonconference matchup. The players on both sides beg to differ. The 17th-ranked Panthers and the Dukes spend the summer playing with and against each other in pickup games. They know the other's tendencies, their strengths and their weaknesses.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The person known as "Victim 1" in the Penn State child sex-abuse case has hired legal counsel. Philadelphia-area lawyers Michael Boni and Slade McLaughlin say they've been retained to represent Victim 1 and his mother. Authorities say Victim 1 is among eight boys molested over 15 years by former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A charity for at-risk children founded by a former Penn State assistant football coach now charged with molesting boys is telling its donors to give their money to the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape instead. The Second Mile told The Associated Press about the recommendation before posting the news on its website. The decision is the latest sign its days may be numbered.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — The search is on for fired football coach Joe Paterno's replacement. A Penn State trustee and the head coach of the four-time defending national champion women's volleyball team are part of a six-person university committee that will lead the search. The school says the committee headed by acting athletic director Dave Joyner will meet this week.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh authorities expect to investigate allegations by a man who says he was molested by former Syracuse assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine in a local hotel room nine years ago. Pittsburgh police say the department is aware of the accusations made by Zach Tomaselli of Maine.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Fans are calling for Andy Reid's dismissal more vehemently than ever. Assistant coaches are arguing on the sideline. A disgruntled star player isn't giving his best effort. There's no saving the Philadelphia Eagles this season. The best team money can buy turned out to be a whole lot of wasted dollars.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers remain in the thick of the AFC playoff race, but they know they have to play much better than they did in Sunday's sloppy 13-9 win over Kansas City. The Steelers improved to 8-3 by winning for the sixth time in seven games, but they had trouble on both sides of the ball.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger will have surgery on his left knee today. He's expected to miss a month. It's been a tough season for Philadelphia's captain. He's also missed six games with an eye injury.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) — C.J. McCollum scored 23 points and Lehigh used a hot-shooting second half to beat Quinnipiac 86-75 last night. Lehigh outscored Quinnipiac 24-16 in the paint in the second half and led 34-28 in that category for the game.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh coach Todd Graham is hoping the Panthers can salvage a disappointing season with a bowl berth. Pitt heads into its season finale on Saturday against Syracuse needing a win to become bowl eligible. It's not where the team picked to finish second in the conference expected to be heading into the first weekend of December.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Ben Roethlisberger threw a short touchdown pass to Weslye Saunders and the Pittsburgh Steelers took advantage of four turnovers by Tyler Palko to beat the Kansas City Chiefs 13-9 last night. Playing with a broken thumb on his throwing hand, Roethlisberger was 21 of 31 for 193 yards and an interception for the Steelers, whose defense lost All-Pro safety Troy Polamalu to an injury in the first quarter.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Tom Brady threw for 361 yards and three touchdowns and the New England Patriots beat the Philadelphia Eagles 38-20 yesterday in a rematch of the 2005 Super Bowl. Filling in for the injured Michael Vick for the second straight game, Vince Young couldn't keep Philadelphia's fading playoff hopes alive despite a career-best 400 yards passing.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Evan Roquemore hit two go-ahead free throws with 4.3 seconds remaining as Santa Clara finished with a 10-0 run to beat Villanova 65-64 in yesterday's third-place game of the 76 Classic. After JayVaughn Pinkston missed the front end of a 1-and-1, Roquemore was fouled while grabbing the rebound. His free throws completed a nine-point comeback over the final three minutes.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Ashton Gibbs scored 21 points and Cameron Wright added a career-high 13 as Number 17 Pittsburgh rolled past Robert Morris 81-71 yesterday. The Panthers won their third straight by shooting 55 percent from the field in the first half and playing with a defensive intensity they have lacked at times early in the season.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (AP) — A'uston Calhoun scored 16 points, including slamming home a dunk with 13 seconds left for the game's final margin, to lead Bowling Green over Temple 67-64 yesterday. Trailing 63-60 with 2:50 left to play, the Falcons went on a 7-1 run the rest of the way and used some timely defense to seal the comeback win.

LEWISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Bryson Johnson scored 20 points and was o
ne of three Bucknell players to go 2-for-2 at the foul line in the game's final 31 seconds, leading the Bison in a 54-50 win over Morehead State yesterday. Kahlil Owens' layup put the Eagles up 45-43 with just under three minutes to play, but Bucknell's foul shooting would spark a game-winning run for the Bison in the TicketCity Legends Classic's Lewisburg subregional.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin was furious — not when he spiked the ball, but after he was penalized for doing so. With the Nittany Lions already trailing 14-7 early in the second quarter of Saturday's game at Wisconsin, tight end Andrew Szczerba was penalized for a false start. McGloin spiked the ball, and was shocked when officials called a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on him to back the Nittany Lions up a total of 20 yards.

Montreal Canadiens 3-1 yesterday. Jakub Voracek also scored for the
Flyers, who got all of their offense in the second period.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - Shawne Alston rushed for two
second-half touchdowns, including a 1-yarder with 6:10 left, and

last night. West Virginia sacked Tino Sunseri 10 times, including
four on Pittsburgh's final drive, when time ran out on the
Panthers.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Khem Birch had 15 points and 10 rebounds,
Ashton Gibbs scored 16 points and Number 17 Pittsburgh pulled away
late against pesky Penn for a 78-58 win in the Philly Hoop Group
Classic last night. Zack Rosen led the Quakers with 22 points on 6
of 10 3-pointers. Tyler Bernardini had 14.

MILWAUKEE (AP) - The Big Ten Leaders division title is on the
line today when the 20th-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions visit
Number 15 Wisconsin this afternoon. The Lions are looking to
salvage a season ravaged by the off-field child sex abuse scandal
that cost legendary coach Joe Paterno his job. The winner of this
game plays Michigan State for the Big Ten title in Indianapolis
next week.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Already expected to be without LaMarr Woodley
for tomorrow's game in Kansas City, the Steelers have added All-Pro
linebacker to their injury report. James Harrison was a limited
participant in yesterday's practice due to a back that underwent
two surgeries this offseason. Unlike Woodley, Harrison is listed as
probable against the Chiefs and is expected to play.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Bernard Pierce ran wild in the second half
Saturday and finished with 189 yards and three touchdowns in
Temple's 34-16 victory over Kent State in Mid-American Conference
play. The Owls have won eight games or more for three straight
seasons for the first time in school history. With its third
straight victory, Temple is bowl-eligible for the third straight
season.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Jordair Jett scored 19 points, and Saint
Louis used its long-range shooting to beat Villanova 80-68
yesterday in the semifinals of the 76 Classic. Saint Louis hit 14

three.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Velton Jones scored 14 points to lead Robert
Morris to a 51-44 victory yesterday over La Salle in the Philly
Hoop Group Classic at the Palestra. Jones was 4 for 15 from the
floor for Robert Morris. Sam Mills was the only Explorer in double
figures with 15 points.

NEW YORK (AP) - Ex-Flyers star Eric Lindros and former Rangers
great Brian Leetch are expected to play in the Winter Classic
Alumni Game on New Year's Eve in Philadelphia. The Flyers' alumni
roster also includes John LeClair, Mark Recchi and Rick Tocchet,
and will be coached by Pat Quinn.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Sidney Crosby says he's tired but healthy after his impressive season debut. The Pittsburgh Penguins star participated in a spirited hour-long practice yesterday, barely 12 hours after he capped his 10-month comeback from concussion-like symptoms with two goals and two assists in a 5-0 win over the New York Islanders.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Steelers coach Mike Tomlin says quarterback Ben Roethlisberger should play on Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs. Roethlisberger broke his right thumb in the second half of the Steelers' win over the Cincinnati Bengals on November 13th.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Nasir Robinson scored 17 points and Number 17 Pittsburgh clamped down on defense in the final minutes to put away La Salle 73-69 last night. Ashton Gibbs added 14 points for the Panthers while Travon Woodall had 12 points, 10 assists and a pivotal block in the waning seconds.

EASTON, Pa. (AP) — Jim Mower hit a school-record 10 3-pointers en route to a career-high 37 points as Lafayette rallied to defeat Fairleigh Dickinson 85-74 last night. Mower, a senior guard, came into the game needing 19 points to surpass1,000 career points. He shot 12 of 16 from the field and 10 of 13 from beyond the arc to break the previous mark of nine 3-pointers.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Lynetta Kizer scored a career-high 25 points, Alyssa Thomas added 21, and Number 8 Maryland remained unbeaten with a 94-71 victory over Saint Joseph's last night. Tianna Hawkins contributed 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Laura Mincy had 14 points and nine rebounds for the Terrapins, who have won all their games by double figures.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) — Khadijah Rushdan scored 16 points and Number 13 Rutgers turned in its best defensive effort of the season with a 68-40 victory over Lehigh last night. STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Penn State interim coach Tom Bradley says he would like to coach the Nittany Lions on a permanent basis. The longtime defensive coordinator took over for Joe Paterno after the Hall of Famer got fired by school trustees in the aftermath of child sex abuse charges against retired assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A judge says those involved in the case of former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky can't disclose the name of an individual described by his lawyers as a victim of and witness to child sexual abuse. The judge signed an order yesterday at the request of two State College attorneys that instructs court officials and the parties to refer to him as "John Doe."

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Sidney Crosby scored twice and added two assists in his season debut and the Pittsburgh Penguins crushed the New York Islanders 5-0 last night. Playing his first game in more than 10 months while recovering from concussion-like symptoms, Crosby appeared to be in midseason form.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Alexei Ponikarovsky had two goals and an assist and Chad LaRose had a goal and two assists and the Carolina Hurricanes earned a 4-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers last night. James van Riemsdyk and Matt Read scored for Philadelphia, which has lost two in a row.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Former FBI director Louis Freeh is promising a thorough, independent investigation into policies and activities at Penn State related to the child sex-abuse allegations against former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky. Freeh has vowed to investigate activities stretching back to the mid-1970s.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate has scheduled the first congressional hearing in the wake of the Penn State child abuse scandal. Three senators have announced that a December 13th hearing will look at how well the nation is protecting children from abuse and neglect.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is doing his best to protect his fractured right thumb. Roethlisberger didn't take a snap from center during practice yesterday. Instead he worked out of the shotgun and pistol formations to avoid the risk of aggravating the injury.

ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands (AP) — Frantz Massenat scored 23 points and Samme Givens added 12 points and seven rebounds to lead Drexel past Winthrop 68-45 in the seventh-place game of the Paradise Jam. Massenat was 6 of 8 from behind the arc for Drexel.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh has gone from fielding questions about playing the spoiler to questions about playing for a Big East championship. The Panthers are one of five teams with two conference losses and a shot being the Big East's BCS representative.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates have agreed to terms with shortstop Clint Barmes. The two-year deal is worth about $10.5 million. It reunites Barmes with Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle. The two worked together in Colorado from 2003-09.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Vince Young threw a go-ahead 8-yard touchdown pass to Riley Cooper with 2:45 to play and the undermanned Philadelphia Eagles finally got things right in the fourth quarter, posting a 17-10 victory over the New York Giants. In what was a must-win game for Andy Reid's struggling team, the Eagles marched 80 yards in 18 plays over 8:51.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby will make his season debut today against the New York Islanders. It will be his first game in nearly a year since being sidelined with concussion-like symptoms. Crosby hasn't played since taking head shots in consecutive games in January against Washington and Tampa Bay.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) — Tim Frazier accounted for more than half of Penn State's offense yesterday, scoring 27 points as the Nittany Lions overcame a sluggish first half to beat South Florida 53-49 in the Hall of Fame Tip-off tournament. Jermaine Marshall added 11 points for Penn State, which had been blown out by Kentucky, 85-47, in the opening game of the tournament on Saturday.

VALPARAISO, Ind. CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Langston Galloway had 23 points while Carl Jones had eight of his 19 points in the final three minutes as Saint Joseph's took third place at the Charleston Classic with a 79-75 victory over Tulsa last night. Jones set a tournament record with 38 points in Friday's 78-70 loss to Seton Hall, but had only six points in the opening half as Tulsa's taller guards denied him the ball. Jones found his game in the second half.

SAN JUAN, P.R. (AP) — Ramone Moore scored 23 points as Temple beat Wichita State 78-74 in overtime yesterday in the third-place game of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off tournament. Juan Fernandez added 15 points, including the tying 3-pointer in the final minute of regulation, for the Owls.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Authorities say two men who ran in the Philadelphia Marathon collapsed during the race and died of apparent heart attacks. Philadelphia police say a 21-year-old man collapsed at the finish line. They say a 40-year-old man collapsed about a quarter-mile before the finish line.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Penn State University police say they've referred another previous incident of indecent assault to the Attorney General's Office. The Centre Daily Times reports chief Tyrone Parham says the assault "by a known individual" took place in an outdoor swimming pool building sometime between June 1st, 2000 and August 30th, 2000. The paper reports Parham couldn't say if the "known individual" is Jerry Sandusky.

(AP) — Miles Cartwright scored 27 points, including a layup to send the game into overtime and seven of his total in the extra frame, to send Pennsylvania to a 78-72 victory over Rider last night. Rider led 59-55 with 2:58 left in regulation and neither team scored again until Zack Rosen's layup pulled Penn within two points more than a minute later.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Carl Jones scored 21 points to lead Saint Joseph's to a 66-53 victory over Georgia Tech in the Charleston Classic last night. The Hawks used a 23-9 run in the second half to take control and advance to the winner's bracket game against Seton Hall, which defeated Virginia Commonwealth 69-54 in the eight-team tournament.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Dwayne Roloson made 33 saves, Vincent Lecavalier had two goals and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1 last night. Brett Connolly and Steve Downie also scored for the Lightning, who have won six consecutive home games.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Matt Read knocked in a rebound with 18.6 seconds left to lift the Philadelphia Flyers to a 2-1 win over the Phoenix Coyotes last night. Read's sixth goal of the season made a winner out of goalie Ilya Bryzgalov in his first game against the Coyotes.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Penn State says former president Graham Spanier offered to resign last week to university trustees in the wake of the child sex abuse case that has surrounded the school. The board announced after a meeting November 9th that it decided Spanier was "no longer president." Neither the board, nor Spanier, specified if he resigned.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The top Democrat on the House education committee is calling for a hearing on the sex abuse scandals at Penn State and The Citadel. California Democratic Congressman George Miller says the hearing should look at whether changes are needed in federal laws designed to protect children and students.

UNDATED (AP) — The chief administrative officer of the Rose Bowl says if Penn State wins the Big Ten title, the Nittany Lions will be "embraced" by the bowl. Kevin Ash says the Rose Bowl would let the Big Ten or Pac 12 decide if there's a reason its champion shouldn't play in Pasadena.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Michael Vick didn't practice for the second straight day yesterday because of broken ribs. It's unclear whether the Pro Bowl quarterback will play when the Philadelphia Eagles visit the Giants on Sunday. Vick broke his two lower ribs on the second play of the Eagles' 21-17 loss to Arizona last weekend. He didn't tell anyone he was hurt and played through the pain.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies have re-signed backup catcher Brian Schneider to a one-year contract. Schneider batted .176 with two homers and nine RBIs in 41 games. The Phillies were 28-8 in games he started, including a 19-game winning streak from May 7th to September 6th.

NEW YORK (AP) — Former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky is telling NBC that he's innocent of child sex abuse charges that shocked the sports world and resulted in the firing of coach Joe Paterno. In a telephone interview with Bob Costas for NBC News' "Rock Center," that aired Monday night, Sandusky also denies accusations that he's a pedophile.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Juan Fernandez scored 19 points and Ramone Moore 15 as Temple pulled away in overtime for a 73-67 victory over Pennsylvania last night. Moore's 3-point jumper put the Owls ahead to stay, 66-64, with 1:18 left in the extra period, and Fernandez followed with another 3-pointer for a five-point lead with 17 seconds to play.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Lamar Kearse had 18 points as one of five double-figure scorers for New Jersey Institute of Technology in a 113-61 rout of Division III Penn State-Abington last night. Sammy Shickel scored 14 points, Arjun Ohri 13, Marques Jones 12 and Isaiah Wilkerson 10 for the Highlanders.

LORETTO, Pa. (AP) — Ryan Willen scored 14 of his 22 points in the second half as Lafayette held off St. Francis 84-81 last night. The Leopards led 40-32 at halftime, before being outscored 49-44 in the second.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Tim Frazier scored 20 points, Trey Lewis added nine and Penn State defeated Radford 62-46 last night. The Nittany Lions used a 14-0 run midway through the first half to gain control. In the wake of the child sex abuse scandal that rocked the school last week, Penn State's coaching staff wore blue sneakers to honor victims of child abuse.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Claude Giroux had two goals and an assist to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to a 5-3 win over the Carolina Hurricanes last night. Matt Read had a goal and an assist, and Maxime Talbot and Wayne Simmonds scored the other goals for Philadelphia, which got three assists from Chris Pronger.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Penn State University was one of the donors to the youth charity at the center of the child sex-abuse charges against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky. Penn State donated between $1000 and $1999 to The Second Mile in 2009, and its Altoona campus donated between $2000 and $4999 that same year. Another donor was the judge who granted unsecured bail to Sandusky.

PARK RIDGE, Ill. (AP) — The Big Ten has taken Joe Paterno's name off the Big Ten's football championship trophy. League commissioner Jim Delany says it's "inappropriate" to keep Paterno's name on the trophy that will be awarded next month after the first Big Ten title game.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Michael Vick played with two broken ribs in the Eagles' 21-17 loss to Arizona on Sunday. Coach Andy Reid says Vick broke his two lower ribs, but didn't "say a word" and played through the pain. His status for Sunday night's game at the New York Giants is uncertain.

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — Danny Briere, Braydon Coburn and Matt Read scored and Ilya Bryzgalov made 31 saves in the Philadelphia Flyers' 3-2 victory over the Florida Panthers last night. Bryzgalov won for the fourth time in five starts.

CINCINNATI (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers held on for a 24-17 win yesterday over the Cincinnati Bengals. Rashard Mendenhall ran for a pair of touchdowns, and the Steelers intercepted rookie Andy Dalton twice in the fourth quarter.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — John Skelton threw a 5-yard TD pass to Early Doucet with 1:53 left and the Arizona Cardinals rallied for a 21-17 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles yesterday. Michael Vick had another so-so performance and the Eagles blew a fourth-quarter lead for the fifth time this season. They are 3-6.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Ashton Gibbs scored 24 points, including the clinching 3-pointer with a minute remaining, and Number 10 Pittsburgh escaped Rider 86-78 last night. Nasir Robinson added 22 points and six rebounds for the Panthers, who trailed by as many as six in the second half but ended the game on a 16-5 run to win their 58th straight nonconference game at the Petersen Events Center.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — J.J. Avila didn't miss a shot in scoring 14 points, and helped lead Navy over Penn State-Altoona 88-54 yesterday. Penn State-Altoona was led by Eric Sarra with 18 points. Jonathan Ross added 11 points for the Cougars, who turned the ball over 22 times.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — B.J. Monteiro and Andre Marhold scored 17 points apiece as Duquesne coasted to an 84-66 victory over Green Bay yesterday. The Dukes took a 30-14 lead with 5:47 left in the first half after a 12-1 run, and the Phoenix never trailed by less than 10 points after that.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Number 1 Penn State shrugged off a host of offseason troubles and started defense of its national championship with a 39-3 defeat yesterday of Bloomsburg. After raising its Big Ten and NCAA championship banners, the Nittany Lions stepped on the mat and won nine bouts.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania's governor says a Penn State football coach who told a grand jury that he saw another coach molest a child did not meet what the governor called "a moral obligation" to intervene. The coach who testified, Mike McQueary, said he saw retired Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky sexually assaulting a boy in a shower at a campus football facility almost a decade ago.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Penn State University lost some of its innocence last week, the worst in its 156-year history. Students and alumni say they felt betrayed as child sex abuse allegations exploded onto the nation's front pages, bringing notoriety to a place largely untouched by scandal. Now, as a new week begins and Penn State takes its first tentative steps toward normalcy, students and alumni alike wonder what that means.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Penn State trustees fired football coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier amid the growing furor over how the school handled sex abuse allegations against an assistant coach. The massive shakeup last night came hours after Paterno announced that he planned to retire at the end of his 46th season. But the outcry following the arrest of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky proved too much for the board to ignore.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Police in riot gear have confronted hundreds of Penn State students who took to the streets after the ouster of football coach Joe Paterno. Crowds toppled a television news van and at least one photographer has been pelted with a rock. The students flooded downtown State College last night after Paterno and university President Graham Spanier were fired amid a growing furor linked to their handling of sex abuse allegations against a former assistant football coach.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Education Department is investigating whether Penn State failed to report incidents of sexual abuse on campus, as required by federal law. Colleges and universities must report the number of crimes on campus and provide warnings if safety is threatened. The investigation was launched after the arrest of former football defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky on sexual abuse charges.

DALLAS (AP) — The National Football Foundation is withdrawing an award that was to be given to Penn State Athletic Director Tim Curley. Curley has been charged with perjury and failure to report an alleged incident of child sex abuse by former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky to authorities, as required by state law. Curley took a leave of absence on Sunday night.

UNDATED (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark is upset about being fined $40,000 for an illegal hit against Baltimore's Ed Dickson. Clark was flagged 15 yards for unnecessary roughness on Sunday night late in the first half of Baltimore's 23-20 win for launching himself into Dickson just after the ball glanced off Dickson's hands.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Brett Connolly scored 2:30 into overtime to give the Tampa Bay Lightning a 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 last night. Connolly won it after Dominic Moore skated into the Flyers' zone and got the puck past a Philadelphia defender into the low slot, from where Connolly beat goalie Ilya Bryzgalov.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Matt Brown ran for 123 yards and a touchdown and Temple beat Miami (Ohio) 24-21 last night to snap a two-game losing streak. Brown was filling in for Bernard Pierce, the star running back who sustained a head injury against Ohio in the Owls' last game.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Jordin Mayes scored 14 of his 19 points in the second half, Jesse Perry had his second straight double-double and Number 16 Arizona pulled away from Duquesne for a 67-59 victory last night. Arizona struggled against the Dukes' pressure well into the second half before pulling away on a run triggered by Mayes and its defense.

NEW YORK (AP) — God'sgift Achiuwa had 21 points and eight rebounds and St. John's rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit for a 78-73 victory over Lehigh last night to give coach Steve Lavin a win in his return to the bench a month after prostate cancer surgery. The Red Storm were down 60-46 with 11:09 to play, then turned on the defensive intensity in holding the Mountain Hawks scoreless for almost 6 minutes to get back in the game.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Penn State's board of trustees says it will appoint a special committee to examine the "circumstances" that led to a child sex-abuse scandal and possible cover-up involving a former assistant to Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno. The furor over the indictments of former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky and two university officials is eroding support among board members for Paterno.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Calls for the ouster of Penn State President Graham Spanier are growing. A top state lawmaker and two newspaper editorial boards have joined online groups demanding his removal over his handling of a child sex-abuse case. Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky is charged with sexually assaulting eight boys. His attorney says he's innocent.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Former Penn State receiver Rich Mauti has sent more than 800 emails to former Nittany Lions to encourage them to stand on the sideline and show support for embattled coach Joe Paterno on Saturday against Nebraska. Mauti says he wants the Nittany Lions to show solidarity for this year's team and former players and coaches who have done nothing wrong.

STORRS, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma says he's doesn't think it's possible for a head coach to know everything that goes on in a college sports program. But Auriemma says he believes coaches can be judged on their actions once they find out something is going on. Auriemma grew up in Norristown, Pennsylvania.

UNDATED (AP) — Big Ten coaches are urging Penn State's players to stay strong as their program weathers the sex-abuse scandal that has cost two administrators their jobs and led to calls for coach Joe Paterno's exit. Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio says a team either thrives or withers when faced with adversity.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — All the preseason hype about the Philadelphia Eagles' potential is gone. They're just trying to salvage the season at this point. What was supposed to be a dream season is turning into a nightmare. The Eagles fell to 3-5 with a 30-24 loss to the Chicago Bears on Monday night.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin says Sunday night's 23-20 loss to the Baltimore Ravens still stings. But Tomlin adds there's not time for his team to lament a game that got away. The loss ended up costing the Steelers a chance to get a firm grip on their spot atop the AFC.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired center Mark Letestu from the Pittsburgh Penguins for a fourth-round pick in next year's NHL draft. Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson announced the deal last night. Letestu has one assist and two penalty minutes in 11 games with the Penguins this season.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Duquense sophomore guard T.J. McConnell understands why his team was picked to finish ninth in the Atlantic 10. The program is rebuilding following the graduation of veterans Damian Saunders and Bill Clark. Yet McConnell believes his team could surprise some folks. Duquesne opens the season today at Number 16 Arizona.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A spokesman for a Penn State satellite campus outside Erie says a former assistant football coach accused of molesting boys ran camps there for six years after being banned from taking children onto the main campus. Penn State Behrend spokesman Bill Gonda says Jerry Sandusky held summer camps for children there after the 2002 main campus ban.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania's state police commissioner says football coach Joe Paterno and other Penn State officials didn't do enough to try to stop suspected child sexual abuse. Commissioner Frank Noonan says Paterno may have fulfilled his legal requirement to report suspected abuse by former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky. But Noonan says he questions "the moral requirements for a human being that knows of sexual things that are taking place with a child."

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Buffalo Bills safety Bryan Scott is saddened, shocked and sickened upon learning one of his former Penn State coaches has been accused of sexually abusing young boys. Scott tells The Associated Press he has a difficult time believing former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky allegedly preyed on boys he met through The Second Mile charity the coach founded.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Joe Frazier, the former heavyweight champ
ion who handed Muhammad Ali his first defeat yet had to live forever in his shadow, has died after a brief final fight with liver cancer. He was 67. The family issued a release confirming the boxer's death last night.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Matt Forte bounced back from two costly turnovers and Jay Cutler rallied the resilient Chicago Bears to a 30-24 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles last night. Cutler threw a go-ahead 5-yard TD pass to Earl Bennett in the fourth quarter, Forte ran for 133 yards and the Bears won their third straight game.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers were seconds from strengthening their spot atop the AFC. With one pass, the Steelers fell all the way to third in their division. The Baltimore Ravens swept the season series from their rivals with a dramatic 23-20 victory on Sunday night, winning the game on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Joe Flacco to Torrey Smith with 8 seconds remaining.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Lamar Patterson scored 22 points and Ashton Gibbs added 20 to lead Number 10 Pittsburgh over Division II Kentucky Wesleyan College 76-67 in an exhibition game last night. Kentucky Wesleyan led for most of the first half and by as many as seven, but Pitt took the lead for good after back-to-back layups by Patterson made it 32-29 with 3:30 to go in the first.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The Big Ten Conference has announced that when Ohio State hosts Penn State on November 19th, the game will kick off at 3:30 p.m. The game will air regionally on ABC and be carried elsewhere on ESPN. The Nittany Lions are currently ranked Number 12 with an 8-1 record and host Number 19 Nebraska this Saturday.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Penn State athletic director Tim Curley and school administrator Gary Schultz have stepped down amid allegations of an explosive child-sex abuse scandal and cover-up in Happy Valley. In a brief statement released after an executive session of Penn State's Board of Trustees, university President Graham Spanier said late yesterday he had received a request from Curley to be placed on administrative leave. Schultz is stepping down and going back into retirement.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Coach Joe Paterno says he's shocked by sexual abuse charges brought against former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky and deeply saddened by the allegations. Paterno in a statement issued by his son, Scott, says he's troubled that someone he thought he knew may have harmed young people.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — The chairman of Penn State's Board of Trustees says a task force will review school policies related to kids' safety. This comes amid allegations of a child sex-abuse scandal and cover up at Penn State. Chairman Steve Garban also says the action is not intended to interfere with the ongoing judicial process.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Joe Flacco hit Torrey Smith for a 26-yard touchdown pass with 8 seconds to go, lifting the Baltimore Ravens past the Pittsburgh Steelers 23-20 last night. Five plays after letting a sure touchdown toss tip off his hands, Smith capped Baltimore's game-winning 92-yard drive by beating William Gay down the right sideline as the Ravens snapped Pittsburgh's four-game winning streak.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers linebackers LaMarr Woodley and James Farrior were both inactive for Sunday night's showdown with Baltimore. Woodley missed his first game of the season with a strained hamstring suffered in the second half of a 25-17 win over New England last week. Farrior missed his second straight game with a calf injury.

HOUSTON (AP) — Brian Ching scored at the end of the first half, and the Houston Dynamo defeated the Philadelphia Union 1-0 last night to advance to the MLS Eastern Conference finals. Houston won the two-game series 3-1 on aggregate scoring after a 2-1 win Sunday at Philadelphia. The Dynamo play Sporting Kansas City on Sunday in Kansas City for the chance to move on to the MLS Cup.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Ryane Clowe scored the lone goal in a shootout and Thomas Greiss stopped all three Pittsburgh attempts as the San Jose Sharks overcame a two-goal deficit in the third period to beat the Penguins 4-3 last night. It was San Jose's eighth straight home win over Pittsburgh.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Patrik Elias and Zach Parise scored in the shootout to lift the New Jersey Devils to a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers last night. Elias scored the winner on New Jersey's final attempt. Parise beat Sergei Bobrovsky on the stick side on the first attempt.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers have found their rhythm offensively. One week running back Rashard Mendenhall is running for 146 yards in a win over the Jaguars, the next Ben Roethlisberger is hitting Mike Wallace for a team-record 95-yard touchdown pass against the Cardinals. The Baltimore Ravens will get an up close look on Sunday night at Heinz Field.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley remained limited in practice yesterday and his status for Sunday's showdown with Baltimore is questionable. Woodley is undergoing aggressive treatment for his strained hamstring. He says he will be a game-time decision.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Number 12 Penn State is seeking its first Big Ten crown since 2004, and the Lady Lions have the perfect shooting guard to take aim at the title. Maggie Lucas is back after a record-setting freshman year. The Philadelphia-area native last year scored 15.8 points a game to lead Penn State.

CHICAGO (AP) — A person familiar with the search says the Chicago Cubs will interview Philadelphia Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin for their vacant manager's job today. Mackanin interviewed for the Red Sox job on Monday.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Ryne Sandberg is among the candidates who will be interviewing with the St. Louis Cardinals. He was ruled out earlier this week for the Chicago Cubs' managing vacancy. Sandberg managed the Philadelphia Phillies' Triple-A team last season and the Phillies say they've granted the Cardinals permission to talk to him.

ERIE, Pa. (AP) — Senator Bob Casey wants to ensure that Erie's minor league baseball team stays in northwestern Pennsylvania. Responding to speculation the Erie SeaWolves might move to the Canadian capital of Ottawa, Casey wrote a letter yesterday to the club's ownership group. He says the team is an important part of the region's economy.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Ilya Bryzgalov made 29 saves and the Philadelphia Flyers scored three times in the first period to chase All-Star goalie Ryan Miller in a 3-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres last night. It was the first meeting between the teams since the Flyers eliminated the Sabres in seven games during their Eastern Conference quarterfinal last season.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid has survived the heat in Philadelphia. The birds struggled early in the season. In a Super Bowl-or-bust year, Reid took the blame for the dismal 1-4 start. Finally, his players have responded.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The linebacker situation for the Pittsburgh Steelers is still cloudy. James Harrison wants to be on the field Sunday night when the Steelers host rival Baltimore, but the All-Pro isn't willing to risk his vision to do it. Harrison practiced yesterday for the first time since fracturing the orbital bone around his right eye a month ago. Fellow linebackers James Farrior and LaMarr Woodley are also questionable against the Ravens.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — There once was a time when the Ravens-Steelers rivalry was fueled by hate. The operative word now is respect. As the Ravens prepare for Sunday night's showdown in Pittsburgh, they have nothing cruel to say about the Steelers. Baltimore linebacker Terrell Suggs says they don't like them, but they definitely respect them.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — The Penn State quarterback job is still officially a two-man rotation according to coach Joe Paterno. But on the field, it looks like Matt McGloin is the go-to guy in the huddle over Rob Bolden for the 16th-ranked Nittany Lions. Penn State enters the bye week with a surprising two-game lead in the loss column over Leaders Division rivals Ohio State, Purdue and Wisconsin.

LEWISBURG, Pa. (AP) — There's a buzz about Bucknell basketball again in the Patriot League. The Bison are the preseason favorite to repeat as conference champion and return to the NCAA tournament. They're coming off a 25-win season, the second-most in school history behind a 27-win campaign in 2005-6.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin and the Steelers are dealing with a number of hurt linebackers. Starters James Farrior, LaMarr Woodley and James Harrison are all nursing injuries as the Steelers prepare for Sunday's AFC North rematch against the Baltimore Ravens.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Nearly halfway through the season, only one team in the NFC East has a winning record. The New York Giants are 5-2 while Philadelphia, Dallas and Washington each are 3-4. No other division has produced more Super Bowl winners or conference champions, but there's no beast in the East this season.

UNDATED (AP) — Penn State is off to a surprisingly strong start. The Nittany Lions are the last team unbeaten in Big Ten play at 5-0 in the conference. Penn State has a bye this week before a three-game gauntlet to close the regular season begins November 12th against Nebraska. Road games also loom at Ohio State and Wisconsin.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A person familiar with the decision says the Big East will invite Boise State, Navy and Air Force for football only and SMU, Houston and Central Florida for all sports. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the conference was not ready to announce which schools its members had voted yesterday to extend invitations to in the upcoming days.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — First-year coach Patrick Chambers will be relying heavily this season on a player from the old regime at Penn State. Point guard Tim Frazier is the lone returning starter from Penn State's team in 2010-11 that went to the NCAA tournament. Frazier took a supporting role on that team to four seniors. Now it's Frazier's turn to take the shots and the spotlight.

BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Red Sox have interviewed Philadelphia Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin to replace Terry Francona as manager. Francona parted ways with the team after its unprecedented September collapse. The Red Sox are also scheduled to talk to Milwaukee Brewers hitting coach Dale Sveum this week.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The surging Pittsburgh Steelers are ready for payback this weekend against the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens embarrassed the Steelers 35-7 in the season-opener. Pittsburgh turned it over seven times and let the Ravens push them around.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — The Baltimore Ravens are enduring an up-and-down season. They've routed the Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Jets and Houston Texans. They've also lost to Tennessee and Jacksonville, who own a combined 6-9 record. The Raven will strive for consistency when the face the Steelers again on Sunday.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Eagles seem to have put their poor start behind them. They didn't commit a turnover for the first time this season Sunday night. The result was a convincing 34-7 victory over the Dallas Cowboys that suddenly thrust Philadelphia back into the mix in a jumbled NFC East.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates have declined options on pitcher Paul Maholm, catchers Ryan Doumit and Chris Snyder and shortstop Ronny Cedeno. The move allows each player to become a free agent.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida State University's Bernard James and Xavier Gibson helped lead Florida State University to victory against Indiana University of Pennsylvania in an exhibition opener for both teams. The final score was 80-51 at last night's game in Tallahassee. IUP's Ashton Smith led all scorers with 18 points and Julian Sanders added 17 points for the team.
