PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Just more than two years after being
released from prison on felony dogfighting charges, Eagles
quarterback Michael Vick is once again on top of the world.
Yesterday, he signed one of the richest contracts in NFL history.
Vick's six-year, $100 million deal makes him the third-highest-paid
player in the NFL, behind Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and Colts
quarterback Peyton Manning.
CINCINNATI (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies topped the
Cincinnati Reds 9-0 last night. Roy Halladay allowed a pair of hits
in seven innings and drove in three runs with the second double of
his career. Ryan Howard hit two of the Phillies' four homers,
giving him 29 for the season.
HOUSTON (AP) - The Houston Astros rallied for an 8-2 win over
the Pittsburgh Pirates last night. Rookie Henry Sosa allowed two
hits and struck out seven over six innings and Matt Downs got his
league-leading 12th pinch-hit RBI to help with the win.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates have announced ticket
prices are going up next year. It will be the first increase in a
decade. The team says the price of an average season ticket will
increase from $15.30 this year to $16.11 next year. Seats directly
behind home plate will cost up to $225 a game, a $30 increase,
while season tickets for the lower infield box will increase $4 a
game.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steeler's preseason finale
tomorrow night against Carolina will be the last shot for some
players to make the cut. NFL teams must trim the roster from 80
players to 53 this weekend and there are precious few spots
available on the veteran-laden defending AFC champions.
NEW YORK (AP) - The NFL and the players' union are donating $1
million to memorials and charities to commemorate the 10th
anniversary of the September 11th attacks. The first Sunday of the
regular season is September 11th, and includes games matching the
Dallas Cowboys at the New York Jets and the New York Giants at the
Washington Redskins.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Flyers have signed James
van Riemsdyk to a six-year contract extension. The Flyers and van
Riemsdyk announced the news yesterday, on their Twitter feeds. Van
Riemsdyk had 21 goals and 40 points last year with the Flyers, and
then scored seven goals in 11 playoff games.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State coach Joe Paterno has
declined to name the starting quarterback for Saturday's season
opener against Indiana State. All JoePa would say was that both Rob
Bolden and Matt McGloin would play.
UNDATED (AP) - The new Big Ten is ready to go. After talking
about the move for more than a year, the biggest addition - Number
10 Nebraska - will begin its season Saturday and all 12 conference
members are in action this week in a league that will have two
divisions and a title game for the first time.
