PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Just more than two years after being
released from prison on felony dogfighting charges, Eagles
quarterback Michael Vick is once again on top of the world.
Yesterday, he signed one of the richest contracts in NFL history.
Vick's six-year, $100 million deal makes him the third-highest-paid
player in the NFL, behind Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and Colts
quarterback Peyton Manning.

CINCINNATI (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies topped the
Cincinnati Reds 9-0 last night. Roy Halladay allowed a pair of hits
in seven innings and drove in three runs with the second double of
his career. Ryan Howard hit two of the Phillies' four homers,
giving him 29 for the season.

HOUSTON (AP) - The Houston Astros rallied for an 8-2 win over
the Pittsburgh Pirates last night. Rookie Henry Sosa allowed two
hits and struck out seven over six innings and Matt Downs got his
league-leading 12th pinch-hit RBI to help with the win.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates have announced ticket
prices are going up next year. It will be the first increase in a
decade. The team says the price of an average season ticket will
increase from $15.30 this year to $16.11 next year. Seats directly
behind home plate will cost up to $225 a game, a $30 increase,
while season tickets for the lower infield box will increase $4 a
game.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steeler's preseason finale
tomorrow night against Carolina will be the last shot for some
players to make the cut. NFL teams must trim the roster from 80
players to 53 this weekend and there are precious few spots
available on the veteran-laden defending AFC champions.

NEW YORK (AP) - The NFL and the players' union are donating $1
million to memorials and charities to commemorate the 10th
anniversary of the September 11th attacks. The first Sunday of the
regular season is September 11th, and includes games matching the
Dallas Cowboys at the New York Jets and the New York Giants at the
Washington Redskins.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Flyers have signed James
van Riemsdyk to a six-year contract extension. The Flyers and van
Riemsdyk announced the news yesterday, on their Twitter feeds. Van
Riemsdyk had 21 goals and 40 points last year with the Flyers, and
then scored seven goals in 11 playoff games.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State coach Joe Paterno has
declined to name the starting quarterback for Saturday's season
opener against Indiana State. All JoePa would say was that both Rob
Bolden and Matt McGloin would play.

UNDATED (AP) - The new Big Ten is ready to go. After talking
about the move for more than a year, the biggest addition - Number
10 Nebraska - will begin its season Saturday and all 12 conference
members are in action this week in a league that will have two
divisions and a title game for the first time.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles
have agreed on a six-year deal. The Eagles made the announcement
last night. A source familiar with the negotiations tells The
Associated Press the deal is worth $100 million, including about
$40 million guaranteed. The person spoke to the AP on condition of
anonymity because terms weren't released.

CINCINNATI (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Cincinnati
Reds 3-2 last night. Shane Victorino hit a tiebreaking, two-run
homer in the eighth inning and Cole Hamels was solid in his return
from the disabled list leading the Phils to victory.

HOUSTON (AP) - The Houston Astros rallied past the Pittsburgh
Pirates 7-4 last night. Carlos Lee hit a tiebreaking three-run
homer in the seventh inning and Wandy Rodriguez struck out a
career-high 13 to lead the Astros to victory.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh quarterbacks Charlie Batch and
Dennis Dixon are battling for the Number 2 spot. The Steelers lost
top reserve Byron Leftwich indefinitely when he broke his left arm
in the 34-16 win over Atlanta Saturday. The injury means both Batch
and Dixon won't have to worry about one of them losing their job.
Now, they just have to see who will be Big Ben's backup.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pitt linebacker Brandon Lindsey has big shoes
to fill. His father, John, played basketball at Memphis while his
older brother, Willie, was a defensive back at Northwestern. While
Lindsey was considered a breakout star a year ago for the Panthers,
the senior figures he was just trying to keep up the family name.
If he's going to match those numbers this year, he'll have to do it
at linebacker.

WASHINGTON, Pa. (AP) - For the first time in her career,
3-year-old filly See You At Peelers was not in the winner's circle.
The harness racing star's 22-race winning streak ended with a
disappointing sixth-place finish in the Nadia Lobell Stakes at The
Meadows yesterday.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Little League World Series champions have
returned home to Southern California after their big win over
Japan. The Ocean View Little League team arrived at Los Angeles
International Airport last night after their 2-1 win Sunday in
Pennsylvania. They immediately headed to the Little League fields
in Huntington Beach for a homecoming celebration with league
members, family and fans.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh
Pirates 7-4 yesterday. Kyle Lohse went a workmanlike five innings
for his 100th career win. Lohse gave up four runs, two of them
earned. He allowed six hits, struck out four and walked two.
Pittsburgh has lost four of its last six.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols
was held out of the starting lineup yesterday against the
Pittsburgh Pirates. Manager Tony La Russa said he felt Pujols
needed a day off. The Cardinals are off today, giving Pujols a
two-day break.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin wanted his
defensive starters to get 40-50 snaps worth of work Saturday night
against Atlanta. Tomlin didn't expect his starters to get all of
that work in a single half. The Falcons threw a whopping 42 times
in the first half of Pittsburgh's 34-16 win, providing the Steelers
with plenty to work on with two weeks left before the regular
season begins.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Huntington Beach, California beat
Hamamatsu City, Japan 2-1 yesterday to take the Little League World
Series. Nick Pratto singled with two outs and the bases loaded to
lead California to victory.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Michael Vick led three scoring drives, the
first-team defense pitched a shutout and the Eagles beat the
Cleveland Browns 24-14 on a rain-soaked night. Vick took a lot of
hits and had to escape trouble quite a bit. Still, he managed to
complete 10 of 18 passes for 98 yards. He ran for 24 yards and a
touchdown.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - David Freese had a go-ahead two-run single in
the fifth and Matt Holliday hit a three-run homer, leading the St.
Louis Cardinals to an 8-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates last
night. The Cardinals ended a three-game losing streak and moved
within 9 1/2 games of idle Milwaukee in the NL Central. Pittsburgh
lost for the sixth time in nine games.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - With weather a concern in Pennsylvania
throughout the weekend, the Phillies elected to move Sunday's game
vs. Florida at Citizens Bank Park to tomorrow, creating a day-night
doubleheader with the Marlins. Gametimes tomorrow are set for 1:05
p.m. and 7:05 p.m.

CLEVELAND (AP) - Jim Thome has accepted a trade to the Cleveland
Indians from the Minnesota Twins. The Indians are hoping their
career leader in home runs can help them catch first-place Detroit
in the AL Central. Thome spent 12 seasons with Cleveland from
1991-2002, hitting a team-record 334 homers. He hit 52 in his final
year before signing as a free agent with Philadelphia.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers punters Daniel Sepulveda
and Jeremy Kapinos are in one of the few position battles up for
grabs on the defending AFC champions. The two are getting equal
playing time during the preseason, and their numbers are nearly
identical heading into tomorrow's game against Atlanta.

NEW YORK (AP) - With Hurricane Irene taking aim at the East
Coast, Major League Soccer has changed times or dates for three
games scheduled this weekend. The Philadelphia Union have moved a
game against New England from Sunday to Wednesday night. The game
has been rescheduled for 8 p.m. Wednesday at PPL Park in Chester,
Pennsylvania.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Sidney Crosby's agent says there's no set
timetable for the Pittsburgh Penguins star to return from a
concussion, though Crosby is expected to make a full recovery.
Agent Pat Brisson discussed Crosby's recovery and medical status on
the team's official web site.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Hagen Danner homered and struck
out 12, and Huntington Beach, California, spoiled the Pennsylvania

California 1-0 in seven innings Wednesday night. Pennsylvania was
eliminated.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Yoshiki Suzuki hit two
opposite-field homers to left and Hamamatsu City, Japan, held off
Maracay, Venezuela, 9-6 yesterday to advance to the Little League

squad from Tokyo.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Vance Worley threw seven impressive innings,
John Mayberry Jr. and Shane Victorino hit homers and the
Philadelphia Phillies beat the New York Mets 9-4 last night. One
night after Cliff Lee and David Herndon combined on a five-hitter
in Philadelphia's 10-0 win, Worley blanked the Mets until the
seventh.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies have placed
All-Star left-hander Cole Hamels on the disabled list and recalled
infielder Pete Orr from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The move announced
before yesterday's game against the New York Mets is retroactive to
August 13th and will allow Hamels to come off the DL Sunday so he
can make his next scheduled to start Monday at Cincinnati.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phillies reliever Jose Contreras will have
season-ending elbow surgery. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. says
the veteran righty will have exploratory surgery to determine
whether the problem in his elbow is muscular or a tendon injury.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Casey McGehee homered during Milwaukee's
seven-run second inning and the surging Brewers rebounded from a
rare recent loss with an 11-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates last
night. McGehee's 10th homer of the season came with Ryan Braun
aboard and accounted for the final two runs of a dreadful inning
for Pittsburgh's Ross Ohlendorf.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers and linebacker
Lawrence Timmons have agreed to a new six-year contract. The deal
will pay Timmons $50 million through 2016. Timmons is the second
linebacker to sign an extension with the Steelers in the last
month. Teammate LaMarr Woodley agreed to a six-year, $61.5 million
contract August 5th.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Eagles defensive tackle Mike Patterson will
play tomorrow night against Cleveland. Patterson collapsed and
suffered a seizure at practice earlier this month. He was diagnosed
with a brain AVM, or arteriovenous malformation, a prenatal
condition in which blood travels abnormally between the arteries
and veins.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - The Pennsylvania party rolled on
at the Little League World Series. The hometown favorites from
Clinton County overcame a rocky start with a six-run first inning
then held on for a 7-5 win last night over Warner Robins, Georgia,
before another raucous crowd under the Lamade Stadium lights.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Shoto Totsuka combined with two
relievers on a five-hitter and Hamamatsu City, Japan, shut out
Langley, British Columbia, 4-0 yesterday to advance at the Little
League World Series. Totsuka struck out four over two innings
before giving way to relievers Hiroyasu Sugiura and Takuya Okamoto.
Japan will play either Mexico or Venezuela tomorrow.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Cumberland, Rhode Island, scored
its final four runs on two errors and a hit batter in the bottom of
the sixth to rally from four runs down and beat Rotterdam,
Netherlands, 8-7 yesterday in a Little League World Series
consolation game. A magnitude-5.8 earthquake centered in Virginia
briefly rattled Lamade Stadium during the game.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) - Former Philadelphia Phillies' Chris Coste is
ending his dream of a professional comeback and instead taking an
assistant coaching position with his alma mater, Concordia College
in Moorhead, Minnesota. Coste won a World Series ring with the
Phillies in 2008, and has been working as an analyst on pregame and
postgame shows this season.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies pounded the New
York Mets 10-0 last night. Cliff Lee threw seven sharp innings and
John Mayberry Jr. and Hunter Pence each hit a two-run homer. The
Phils rocked Dillon Gee to earn their major league-best 82nd win.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins has been
placed on the 15-day disabled list with a groin strain, and
All-Star third baseman Placido Polanco has been activated from the
DL. The moves were made before the major league-leading Phillies
opened a three-game series against the New York Mets last night.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ryan Doumit homered and drove in two runs as
the Pittsburgh Pirates ended more than a year of futility against
the Milwaukee Brewers with a 9-2 win in the second game of a
doubleheader last night. The Brewers took the opener 8-1 for their
13th straight victory over Pittsburgh, but the Pirates pounded
Milwaukee ace Zack Greinke in the second game.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates have put starting
pitcher Kevin Correia on the 15-day disabled list with a strained
oblique and recalled right-hander Chris Leroux from a
rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Indianapolis to fill the
roster spot. Correia is 12-11 with a 4.79 ERA this season but just
1-4 since the All-Star break.

DENVER (AP) - By his own calculation, hard-throwing Los Angeles
Dodgers lefty Clayton Kershaw has seven starts remaining. That's
seven more chances to display his increasing maturity on the mound,
seven more opportunities to show that he indeed belongs in the
conversation for the NL Cy Young award.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed veteran
offensive lineman Trai Essex to a one-year contract. Essex spent
the first six seasons of his career with the Steelers. He started
five games in 2010 for the defending AFC champions.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The agent for Penguins star Sidney Crosby is
refuting a Canadian television report that says the former MVP has
suffered a setback in his recovery from a pair of concussions. CTV
News reported yesterday that Crosby suspended his training after
suffering a recurrence of concussion-like symptoms and wouldn't be
ready when the Penguins open training camp next month.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - New Penn State coach Patrick Chambers
has picked up his first major player in Happy Valley, with former
Southern Mississippi guard D.J. Newbill deciding to transfer to the
Nittany Lions. Newbill must sit out this season and will have three
years of eligibility left starting in 2012. Penn State says Newbill
completed his transfer paperwork and began attending classes
yesterday.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State sophomore Silas Redd is
preparing to assume a bigger workload this season in Happy Valley.
The Nittany Lions must replace career rushing leader Evan Royster,
and offensive coordinator Galen Hall says Redd will take over the
role as the lead back.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Brandon Miller led off the bottom
of the first with a homer and combined with starter Landon Breon on
a no-hitter to lead the Little League World Series' hometown
favorites from Clinton County, Pennsylvania, to a 10-0 rout last
night of Lafayette, Louisiana. Miller deposited a 2-1 pitch on to
the hill packed with fans behind the right-field wall to start the
rout.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Hamamatsu City, Japan, broke open
a tight game with an eight-run sixth inning in a 13-4 victory
yesterday over Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, to advance at the Little
League World Series. With Japan clinging to a one-run lead, Sotaro
Yoshida hit a solo homer with one out to start the scoring in the
sixth.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Warner Robins, Georgia topped
LaGrange, Kentucky 8-5 yesterday to advance at the Little League
World Series. Jake Fromm's line-drive homer to center highlighted a
three-run ninth inning to lead Georgia to victory.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Langley, British Columbia beat
Kaoshiung, Taiwan 5-3 yesterday to advance at the Little League
World Series. Yi An Pan scattered nine hits over five innings and
added a solo homer in the sixth inning.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Gillian Wernet struck out 12 in a
four-hit shutout and Oranjestad, Aruba, ended its Little League
World Series run with a 5-0 win yesterday over Rapid City, South
Dakota. Aruba's ace also had a nice day at the plate, going 2 for 3
with a run.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Ian Desmond hit a tying homer with two outs in
the ninth inning, and then Jonny Gomes was hit by a pitch from Brad
Lidge with the bases loaded in the 10th yesterday, giving the
Washington Nationals an unlikely 5-4 win over the Philadelphia
Phillies. It was the second improbable victory in three games for
the Nationals. They beat the Phillies with a six-run rally in the
ninth Friday night.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Philadelphia shortstop Jimmy Rollins left the
Phillies' game against the Washington Nationals with a strained
right groin. Rollins came out in the third inning yesterday and the
team says he is day-to-day.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Cincinnati Reds sent Pittsburgh All-Star
closer Joel Hanrahan to his second loss in three days, scoring
twice in the ninth to beat the Pirates 5-4 yesterday. Ramon
Hernandez hit an RBI-single to tie the game with one out in the top
of the ninth and Dave Sappelt scored on Brandon Phillips' fielder's
choice as Cincinnati took two of three in the series.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed outfielder
Jose Tabata to a six-year contract extension. The Pirates announced
yesterday that the deal comes with club options for 2017, 2018 and
2019.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio
Brown is looking to deliver for the team. Brown being among the
last to leave the field has been one of the few constants of
Steelers training camp - first at St. Vincent College in Latrobe,
Pennsylvania, and now back in Pittsburgh.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Huntington Beach, California,
pounded out 12 hits, Hagen Danner and Nick Pratto combined on a
two-hitter, and the West region champs stayed undefeated in the
2011 Little League World Series with a 10-0 win over LaGrange,
Kentucky, yesterday. Pratto and Ryo Takeda each knocked in two runs
to lead the way.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - The Little League World Series
rookies from Montana are playing like big league veterans. Patrick
Zimmer tossed five shutout innings and Ben Askelson hit a two-out,
two-run single to lift the boys from Billings to a 3-1 win over
Lafayette, Louisiana, yesterday. In the other early game yesterday,
Venezuela's Yonny Hernandez hit a pair of two-run homers in an 8-0
win over Canada.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Little League has pushed back the
start time of the World Series game today involving Clinton County,
Pennsylvania, by four hours to 8 p.m., because of expectations for
another large crowd. The Keystone league team from Clinton County
plays just 30 miles away from South Williamsport.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ben Roethlisberger completed 8 of 12 passes
for 125 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Pittsburgh Steelers
cruised by the Philadelphia Eagles 24-14 last night. Roethlisberger
directed the defending AFC champions to touchdowns on both drives
he played, hitting Antonio Brown for a 29-yard score in the first
quarter and veteran Hines Ward on a 20-yard strike in the second.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Michael Vick is glad he chose the Philadelphia
Eagles, even if he had more attractive options. After telling GQ
magazine he didn't want to come to Philadelphia to be a
third-string quarterback following his release from federal prison
two years ago, Vick clarified his remarks yesterday.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - David Akers is still trying to get
comfortable in his new surroundings after 12 seasons in
Philadelphia, and coming to the San Francisco 49ers doesn't exactly
make that adjustment any easier. Even for a five-time Pro Bowl
kicker, there might not be a tougher NFL stadium for field goals
than Candlestick Park with its swirling wind.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - John Mayberry Jr. hit a two-run homer, David
Herndon tossed three scoreless innings in relief and the
Philadelphia Phillies beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-1 last night
in a matchup of division leaders. The major league-leading Phillies
took two of three in a potential playoff preview, improving to
14-1-1 in their last 16 series.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phillies All-Star center fielder Shane
Victorino's suspension for his part in a benches-clearing brawl at
San Francisco on August 5th has been reduced and he will miss the
next two games. Victorino appealed the original suspension of three
games and it was dropped to two games. He wasn't in Philadelphia's
lineup against Arizona yesterday and won't play at Washington
today.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers have acquired
right-handed pitcher Tim Wood from the Pittsburgh Pirates in a
waiver deal. The Rangers got Wood yesterday for either a player to
be named or cash. Texas optioned Wood to Triple-A Round Rock.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh outfielder Jose Tabata grew up in
Venezuela listening to his father tell stories about former Pirates
great Roberto Clemente. Tabata admired the Hall of Famer for his
fearless play on the field and selflessness off it, values the
23-year-old says he wants to emulate during his career.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Seven former players have sued the NFL in
Philadelphia over concussion-related injuries, the first potential
class-action lawsuit of its kind. The players accuse the league of
failing to protect their health and of trying to conceal any links
between football and brain injuries. The players include former
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and two-time Super Bowl champion
Jim McMahon.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh freshman wide receiver Darius
Patton was hospitalized yesterday after collapsing during practice.
Coach Todd Graham says the 5-foot-10, 170-pound Patton was
participating in a non-contact drill when he fainted. Patton was
taken to the hospital. He will be held overnight for observation,
but Graham says Patton was awake and alert.

VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) - Villanova forward Isaiah Armwood has
decided to transfer. Armwood would have been a junior this season
for the Wildcats. He says he wants to find a program that better
suits his style of play. He played 60 career games for the
Wildcats. Last season, he averaged 2.5 points, 3.6 rebounds and
17.4 minutes.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Reliever Haden Erbe got out of a
bases-loaded jam with nobody out in the sixth and Lafayette, La.,
held on for a thrilling 2-0 victory over Warner Robins, Ga., last
night in the Little League World Series. Georgia broke through
against Louisiana starter Ethan Hines, who struck out six before
getting lifted in favor of Erbe.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Yoshiki Suzuki hit a grand slam
in the second inning and Mitsuhiro Uchida added three hits and
three RBIs to lead Hamamatsu City, Japan, to a 12-1 victory over
Oranjestad, Aruba, in the Little League World Series. Leading 1-0
heading into the top of the second, Japan sent 10 hitters to plate
and scored six runs.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Jorge Jacobo struck out 12 and
tossed a two-hitter yesterday to open the Little League World
Series and lead Mexicali, Mexico, to a 3-0 victory over Kaoshiung,
Taiwan. The 12-year-old, right-hander pitched a gem and struck out
the final five hitters. It was the first time a Taiwan team had
been shut out in 55 games at the series.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Cole McKenzie had a two-run
double and Billings, Montana, overcame three solo homers by Rapid
City, South Dakota, in a 6-4 victory yesterday in the Little League
World Series. The boys from Billings won in the first appearance by
a Montana team on Little League's biggest stage.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Cliff Lee threw seven impressive innings,
Wilson Valdez hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the seventh, and
the Philadelphia Phillies beat Arizona 9-2 last night to snap the
Diamondbacks' seven-game winning streak. Lee allowed two runs and
three hits, striking out seven. The All-Star lefty has won four
straight starts.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies have called up
right-hander Michael Schwimer from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to
replace All-Star third baseman Placido Polanco on the roster.
Schwimer joined the Phillies yesterday before the NL East leaders
played Arizona. Polanco was placed on the DL after Tuesday night's
loss. He has a sports hernia.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Allen Craig homered twice to break out of a
slump and lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 7-2 victory over the
Pittsburgh Pirates last night. Craig went 4 for 5 with three RBIs
and Yadier Molina added three hits for the Cardinals, who are
trying to stay within shouting distance of front-running Milwaukee
in the NL Central.

MOOSIC, Pa. (AP) - With cameras flashing for every at-bat, A-Rod
the minor leaguer moved closer to rejoining the New York Yankees.
His return to the big-league lineup, however, will have to wait.
Alex Rodriguez has ruled himself out for today's opener of New
York's four-game series at Minnesota. Rodriguez went 1 for 2 with
an RBI and two walks in his final game for Triple-A
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last night. He also made an error.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jeremy
Maclin has been cleared to return to the team after a cancer scare.
Trainer Rick Burkholder says barring a setback, Maclin will return
to practice within 10 days and should be able to play in the
September 11th opener at St. Louis.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed defensive
backs Kevin Dockery and Macho Harris. Dockery and Harris are
expected to give Pittsburgh's secondary some needed depth. Veterans
Ike Taylor and Bryant McFadden have been limited in training camp
and neither will play tonight when the Steelers host Philadelphia.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State's two starting quarterback
candidates agree: They'd rather not have to share the job. Now it's
up to coach Joe Paterno to pick either Rob Bolden or Matt McGloin,
and he's not quite ready to make that choice with about two weeks
left in preseason camp.

PARK RIDGE, Ill. (AP) - Big Ten volleyball coaches have picked
Penn State to win a ninth straight conference championship. The
Nittany Lions have won four consecutive NCAA titles. They're also
Number 1 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association national
poll.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Arizona Diamondbacks beat the
Philadelphia Phillies 3-2 last night. Lyle Overbay lined a two-RBI
double off Roy Halladay in the ninth inning to lift Arizona to
victory. Halladay had retired 12 straight batters into the ninth.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia Phillies All-Star left-hander
Cole Hamels will skip at least one turn in the rotation with
shoulder inflammation. Hamels complained he wasn't able to get
loose in his last start Friday against Washington. He lasted just
five innings in a 4-2 loss.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Garrett Jones homered to lead off the bottom
of the 11th inning and lift the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 5-4 victory
over the St. Louis Cardinals last night. Jones connected on a 2-2
pitch from Arthur Rhodes for his 14th home run.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates activated left fielder
Jose Tabata from the disabled list yesterday and optioned slumping
third baseman Pedro Alvarez to Triple-A Indianapolis for the second
time this season. Tabata had been out since June 27th with a
strained left quadriceps

MOOSIC, Pa. (AP) - Alex Rodriguez singled and played six innings
in the field last night, as the Yankees third baseman continues his
minor-league rehabilitation following right knee surgery in July.
Rodriguez played in his first game last night for Triple-A
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor
underwent successful surgery yesterday to repair his broken left
thumb. Taylor injured it in the first quarter of Pittsburgh's 16-7
loss to the Washington Redskins in the preseason opener last
Friday.

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) - The aging Pittsburgh Steelers secondary is
sticking together. Rather than go out and make a splash in free
agency, the Steelers opted to keep the defensive backfield intact,
re-signed free agents Ike Taylor and William Gay. All-Pro safety
Troy Polamalu says while the unit is getting older, it's also
getting wiser.

SHENZHEN, China (AP) - Skylar Diggins scored 13 points and had
six steals to lead the U.S. to a 85-33 rout of Great Britain at the
World University games yesterday. Elena Delle Donne and Chiney
Ogwumike added 10 points each for the Americans. The U.S. will play
Finland in the quarterfinals tomorrow.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Martins Abele has transferred from Radford to
Duquesne. He's a 7-foot-1, 290-pound center. Abele averaged 5.4
points and 5.1 rebounds in 19 games last season for the
Highlanders. He will have three seasons of eligibility with the
Dukes.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Joe Paterno says he's in a little pain
after getting blindsided in practice. But he expects to coach from
the sideline for Penn State's season opener. The Hall of Fame coach
spoke from a golf cart before practice yesterday, a week after
being released from the hospital following the accidental hit in
last week's practice.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia Eagles officials say Hall of
Fame receiver Pete Pihos has died. He was 87. Pihos helped the team
to a pair of NFL championships. The team says Pihos died early
yesterday at a nursing home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, after
a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

MILL HALL, Pa. (AP) - The Little League World Series is played
on what's considered a neutral field, though there will be a
decided hometown favorite when play begins later this week. The
Mid-Atlantic region champions from Keystone Little League in
Clinton County, Pennsylvania, play home games just about 30 miles
southwest of the World Series complex in South Williamsport.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ryan Doumit went 4 for 4 and hit a tiebreaking
three-run home run to lift the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 6-2 victory
over the St. Louis Cardinals last night. Doumit's homer in the
fourth inning off Jake Westbrook snapped a 1-1 tie and helped
Pittsburgh break its three-game losing streak.

NEW YORK (AP) - UCLA pitcher Gerrit Cole and the Pittsburgh
Pirates have agreed to a minor league contract with an $8 million
signing bonus. Cole had been among 23 first-round draft picks
facing a midnight deadline to reach agreements with major league
teams.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies have signed right-hander Dave
Bush to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Lehigh
Valley. Bush made 17 appearances and three starts for the Texas
Rangers before being released last month.

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman
Maurkice Pouncey has quickly become line leader. He impressed the
Steelers so much during training camp last year he won the starting
job at center. Pouncey has since developed into one of the best in
the league at his position. His teammates say he'll continue to
shine during his sophomore season.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Penguins have no plans on
rushing star Sidney Crosby back to the ice. General manager Ray
Shero says it's too early to tell if Crosby will be ready when
training camp begins next month. The former MVP hasn't played since
suffering a concussion in January.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Several former Kentucky stars currently in
the NBA could be heading back to campus. Washington Wizards point
guard John Wall, Sacramento Kings center DeMarcus Cousins and Los
Angeles Clippers point guard Eric Bledsoe - who all turned pro
after one season with the Wildcats - say they're considering using
the NBA lockout as a chance to take a few classes.

BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) - Pennsylvania is heading to the Little
League World Series after defeating New Jersey. Wyatt Koch hit a
three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth, helping lead
Keystone Little League of Clinton County, Pennsylvania, to a 5-2
win over the Paramus, New Jersey, team yesterday in Bristol,

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Nyjer Morgan's game-ending sacrifice fly in the
10th inning lifted the Milwaukee Brewers a 2-1 win over the
struggling Pittsburgh Pirates and a series sweep. The Brewers have
now won all eight games against the Pirates this season and 12
straight over the last two years at Miller Park.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The game between the Washington Nationals
and Philadelphia Phillies scheduled for yesterday was postponed
because of rain. It will be made up on September 20th as part of a
split doubleheader. The game was called more than two hours before
it was supposed to begin.

LATROBE, Pa (AP) - New Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver
Jerricho Cotchery says he's ready to win now. The seven-year NFL
veteran signed with the defending AFC champions last week and
participated in his first practice with the Steelers yesterday.
Cotchery says he believed Pittsburgh was the best fit for him after
he asked the New York Jets to release him.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles defense continues
to impress. Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha says it's because of the
confidence and the experience the players have on defense. He says,
"When we're playing at our best, we'll be tough to beat on
defense."

SHENZHEN, China (AP) - Skylar Diggins, Nnemkadi Ogwumike and
Devereaux Peters scored 14 points each to lead a balanced U.S.
offense, and the Americans routed Slovakia 114-63 yesterday in the
World University games. The U.S. will close preliminary play
Wednesday against Britain.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - It's been a decade since Danny
Almonte and his New York team were disqualified from the Little
League World Series, but the repercussions of the controversy still
resonate. The left-hander had his World Series perfect game
stricken after an investigation revealed he was 14 and a birth
certificate showing he was 12 was false. This year's World Series
starts Thursday.

STEELERS-REDSKINS

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) - Rex Grossman completed 19 of 26 passes for 207 yards and a touchdown to help the Washington Redskins beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 16-7 on Friday night in the preseason opener for both teams. Hoping to gain over early edge over an injured John Beck for the starting job, Grossman hit Santana Moss for an 8-yard score in the second quarter - although the drive came against Pittsburgh's second-string defense. Beck did not play. He sat out after tweaking his groin in practice last week. While the Redskins' starters played the entire first half, Pittsburgh's first-stringers were done for the game by the end of the first quarter. Backup Isaac Redman had a 22-yard touchdown run for the Steelers.

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder hit back-to-back homers and Zack Greinke remained perfect at Miller Park to lift the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers to a 7-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night. Braun and Fielder homered in the eighth after the Pirates had chased Greinke with two runs earlier in the inning. Milwaukee won its 10th straight at Miller Park against Pittsburgh and is a major league best 42-15 at home this year.
The 2009 AL Cy Young winner struck out nine and retired 11 straight at one point as Milwaukee maintained its four-game lead over St. Louis in the division race. Milwaukee built a 4-0 lead off Paul Maholm before the Pirates rallied, only to have Braun and Fielder answer right back.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Livan Hernandez pitched 6 2-3 strong innings and drove in two runs with a pair of singles, helping the Washington Nationals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2 Friday
night. Hernandez (7-11) outpitched All-Star Cole Hamels to rebound from a rough outing at Colorado last Saturday. He gave up one unearned run and four hits. The streaking Phillies were coming off a franchise-best 9-1 road trip. The four-time NL East champions have a healthy lead in the division and lead the majors with a 77-41 record. Hamels lasted just five innings, his third-shortest outing this season. He allowed three runs, six hits and tied his season-high
with four walks. Hamels gave up two runs or less in 14 of his previous 15 starts.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies have agreed to a minor-league deal with Jack Cust. Cust, a left-handed hitting outfielder, was released by Seattle earlier this month after hitting .213 with three homers and 23 RBIs in 225 at-bats. He'll be assigned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Cust averaged 28 homers and 76 RBIs between 2007-09 for Oakland. He had a career-best 33 homers in 2008. Cust also led the AL in strikeouts in each of those three seasons. Cust is a career .242 hitter with 105 homers and 323 RBIs in 10 seasons with six teams.

CHESTER, Pa. (AP) - Freddy Adu left Major League Soccer midway through the 2007 season.
Now, he's back ... and nearly in first place. The highly publicized 22-year-old midfielder, who had been linked to Chivas USA in his long-awaited return to the league, reversed field and decided to sign with the Philadelphia Union on Friday. The Union plucked Adu on a free transfer from Sports Lisboa e Benfica of the Portuguese First Division. His decision signifies an immediate reunion with Adu and Union manager Peter Nowak. Adu signed his professional contract with D.C. United at the age of 14 and spent three seasons with Nowak from 2004-06, including winning the MLS Cup in 2004. The Union (8-5-9) host FC Dallas (12-6-6) on Saturday night, and enter this match just one point behind the Columbus Crew (9-7-7) for first place in the Eastern Conference.

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) - Jimmie Johnson says he wasn't about to take any lip from Kurt Busch. The two drivers confronted each other after last week's NASCAR Cup race at Pocono. They had slammed into each other on the final lap. Johnson is a five-time Cup champion, and he and Busch have had dustups in the past. Johnson said at a news conference at Watkins Glen International on Friday that he was angered by Busch's remarks as Johnson walked away following their argument in the pits. Johnson says he thought things were settled and then "the guy gets real tough" and starts "running his mouth." On Sunday, Johnson accused Busch of trying to run him down. Busch contends Johnson made the first move. Busch finished third
and Johnson fourth.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Michael Vick picked up where he left off
last year and then quickly took a safe seat on the sideline. Vick
threw for 74 yards and a touchdown pass in his only series and the
new-look Philadelphia Eagles beat the Baltimore Ravens 13-6 last
night in their preseason opener.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Things could get messy tonight when the
Washington Redskins host the Pittsburgh Steelers in their preseason
opener. The NFL lockout kept teams from holding offseason
conditioning sessions, minicamps and other workouts. Usually by now
most everyone is in football shape and well versed in the play
books. Not this year.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to terms
with former New York Jets wide receiver Jericho Cotchery. The Jets
released the seven-year veteran last week. Cotchery gives the
defending AFC champions some needed depth at wide receiver behind
Mike Wallace and Hines Ward.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State coach Joe Paterno is back
at practice after spending nearly two days at a hospital following
a blindside hit by a receiver during drills. And one of the first
questions Paterno had for his son - assistant coach Jay Paterno -
was about the quarterbacks. Sophomore Rob Bolden and junior Matt
McGloin are jostling for the starting nod.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - New Pittsburgh coach Todd Graham hasn't
coached a down with the Panthers yet, but he's already put his
stamp on the program. Graham is overseeing renovations at the
team's football complex on the city's South Side, and there isn't a
detail that escapes him. The former Tulsa coach sees the facility
as an extension of the energy he's trying to bring to the Panthers.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Big Ten volleyball teams that already had
to contend with superpower Penn State year after year now get to
look forward to playing a Nebraska team that's second in all-time
wins and owns three national championships. Russ Rose, coach of the
four-time defending national champion Nittany Lions, picks newcomer
Nebraska to win the league this fall.

DALLAS (AP) - Bill Lively, who led the North Texas Super Bowl
Host Committee and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, will return to
his alma mater. The University of North Texas has announced the
appointment of Lively as vice chancellor of strategic partnerships.
Lively was president of the host panel for the February 6th Super
Bowl at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. Green Bay defeated Pittsburgh
31-25.
