SAN DIEGO (AP) - Cole Hamels shut down his hometown Padres to
win for the first time in nine starts and lead the Phillies to a
5-0 win and a three-game sweep of NL West-leading San Diego. The
Phillies won their seventh straight game at the downtown ballpark,
where they're 18-4 since it opened in 2004.

MILWAUKEE (AP) - The Pirates have been swept out of Milwaukee
with an 8-4 loss to the Brewers yesterday. The Brewers roughed up
Pittsburgh starter Charlie Morton for eight runs in just 3-plus
innings.

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Evan Meek was hit
in his pitching hand by a line drive from Milwaukee's Ryan Braun
and left last night's game, but X-rays were negative. Pittsburgh
manager John Russell said the ball hit Meek on the top part of his
hand near his fingers.

DENVER (AP) - Ben Roethlisberger will meet soon with NFL
commissioner Roger Goodell about whether his six game suspension
will be reduced to four games. The Steelers quarterback was
suspended for six games after being accused of sexually assaulting
a Georgia college student in March.

DENVER (AP) - Ben Roethlisberger completed 4 of 6 passes for 67
yards and no touchdowns during the Steelers' 34-17 loss to Denver
in a preseason matchup last night. Backup Dennis Dixon relieved
Roethlisberger and completed nine of 16 passes with two
interceptions.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - With just one preseason game remaining in
which his starters will not play, Philadelphia Eagles head coach
Andy Reid has settled on wide receiver DeSean Jackson to handle
punt return duties and Ellis Hobbs to return kickoffs. While the
return game is settled, Reid's offensive line is still in flux.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - It's still a three-man race for the
starting quarterback job at Number 19 Penn State. The depth chart
released yesterday ahead of next weekend's opener against
Youngstown State listed sophomores Matt McGloin and Kevin Newsome
along with freshman Robert Bolden on the first team. Coach Joe
Paterno is scheduled to speak tomorrow, when he will likely
announce a starter.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Japan has ended the United
States' five-year reign as Little League World Series champions.
The team from Tokyo limited Waipahu, Hawaii, to four singles in a
4-1 win in the title game in South Williamsport yesterday. Japan
won thanks to excellent pitching and defense, plus a homer and
three RBIs from Konan Tomori.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Taiwan knocked off Texas
yesterday with a 14-2 victory in the Little League World Series
third place game in South Williamsport. The game was ended after
four innings Sunday because of the 10-run rule.

Friday's Games

Philadelphia 3, San Diego 2, 12 innings

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Brad Lidge balked home the tying run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, forcing the Philadelphia Phillies to play three more innings before beating the NL West-leading San Diego Padres 3-2 Friday night on a perfect slide by Jimmy Rollins. Rollins doubled to the right-field wall off rookie Ernesto Frieri (0-1) leading off the 12th and came around to score on Placido Polanco's single to center. Luis Durango made a strong throw to catcher Yorvit Torrealba, but Rollins slid wide to avoid the tag and reached back with his left hand to touch the plate. Umpire James Hoye signaled safe as Rollins popped up and clapped his hands. Philadelphia, which had been swept in four home games by Houston, took a half-game lead over San Francisco in the wild-card race and pulled within two games of first-place Atlanta in the NL
East.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies have placed right-handed reliever Danys Baez on the 15-day disabled list with back spasms. Taking his place on the roster is left-hander Antonio Bastardo, who was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Baez is 3-3 with a 5.14 ERA in 45 appearances. Bastardo was recalled for the fourth time this season.

Milwaukee 7, Pittsburgh 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Alcides Escobar's triple highlighted a six-runseventh inning and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the PittsburghPirates 7-2 Friday night. James McDonald (2-4) was cruising along in his 10th major-leaguestart before the seventh. Escobar's triple on a misplayed ball by right fielder LastingsMilledge scored two to give Milwaukee its first lead of the game. Jonathan Lucroy followed with an RBI single. Joe Inglett, pinchhitting for Chris Narveson (10-7), singled for his major-leagueleading 19th pinch hit. Corey Hart doubled in a run. Ryan Braun then broke an 0 for 7slump with a two-run double.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Mike Kafka's 18-yard pass to Riley Cooper in the closing seconds boosted the Philadelphia Eagles past Kansas City 20-17 on Friday night, making Todd Haley 0-7 in preseason games as the Chiefs' head coach. The Chiefs' offense got off to a horrendous start and the man who's attempting to replace Philadelphia quarterback Donovan McNabb sputtered most of his time on the field. Chiefs rookie linebacker Cameron Sheffield was immobilized and
had to be taken away on a cart after a helmet-to-helmet tackle on Mike Bell left him motionless on the field. The Chiefs said only that he had a neck injury and was being further evaluated. Kafka, a rookie out of Northwestern, led the Philadelphia reserves on an 8-play, 80-yard drive against the Chiefs backups to pull out the win.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Houston's Brett Myers threw seven sharp
innings in a 3-2 win over his former Phillies teammates last night.
Carlos Lee hit a go-ahead two-run single in the eighth for the
Astros. The wild card-leading Phillies remain two games behind
Atlanta in the NL East. It's just their sixth loss in their last 30
home games.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies have added Hall of Fame pitcher
Bruce Sutter to their minor league staff as a pitching consultant.
Sutter had 300 career saves in a 12-year career with the Cubs,
Cardinals and Braves.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Albert Pujols hit a three-run home run one
pitch after injured Pirates starter Ross Ohlendorf was pulled
during a four-run St. Louis first inning in a 10-2 win in
Pittsburgh last night. Ohlendorf was lifted due to soreness and
tightness in his right shoulder after throwing only eight pitches.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pirates outfielder Jeff Clement has been
placed on the disabled list with an irritated knee. Lefthander
Justin Thomas has been called up from Triple-A Indianapolis. Thomas
allowed two runs in the ninth inning of last night's loss to St.
Louis.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State's defense will be looking
to reload this season after losing some key players. Defensive
tackle Jared Odrick, and linebackers Sean Lee, Navorro Bowman and
Josh Hull are all in the NFL now. Defensive end Jack Crawford says
he's confident the remaining Nittany Lions can keep 19th-ranked
Penn State among the Big Ten's top units.

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) - Former Steelers safety Tyrone Carter and
fullback Carey Davis have been signed by the Redskins. Carter and
Davis both practiced yesterday. Carter has 53 starts over his 10
NFL seasons with Minnesota, including 12 games for the Steelers
last year. Davis started 10 games over three seasons for
Pittsburgh, but was used sparingly last year.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Mexico has eliminated Puerto Rico
from the Little League World Series after a 4-2 win yesterday, but
the evening games were canceled because of rain. Little League was
able to get two other games in earlier yesterday, including
Taiwan's 23-0 rout of Canada. Ramstein Air Force Base, Germany beat
Plymouth, Minnesota, 2-1, in a consolation game.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The city-county Sports & Exhibition Authority
is taking public comment on what to do with the Penguins' former
home. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports the Penguins want to
tear down the arena and build a mixed use development to bolster
the neighboring Hill District.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh's slumping Zach Duke limited the
Mets to one run over seven innings, while Jose Tabata and Lastings
Milledge homered to allow the Pirates to salvage the final game of
the three-game series and snap a five-game losing streak by beating
New York 2-1 yesterday. Duke struck out five and walked two to win
for only the third time in 13 starts since May 18th.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates' losing ways haven't stopped the
team from turning a profit. Amid their current streak of 18 losing
seasons, the Pirates generated profits of more than $29 million in
2007 and 2008. The team's ownership also paid its partners more
than $20 million in 2008.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates' two top draft picks, righthanders
Jameson Taillon and Stetson Allie, have reported to Class A State
College for organizational orientation. Neither will pitch until
the fall Florida Instructional League, where recently signed
16-year-old Luis Heredia also will report.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Roy Oswalt struck out eight in seven sharp
innings and led the Phillies to a 6-0 win over the Washington
Nationals on a rainy Sunday in Philadelphia. Oswalt has won three
straight starts for the first time this season. He never came out
for the eighth after a 1 hour, 44 minute, rain delay.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies honored umpire Jerry Crawford
for his 33 years of service yesterday. The Philadelphia-area native
is retiring at the end of the season.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia left guard Todd Herremans will
return to the lineup from a foot injury when the team travels to
Kansas City for its third preseason game Friday night. Herremans'
return comes in the wake of an overall poor performance by the
interior of the Eagles' offensive line in Friday night's 22-9 loss
to the Cincinnati Bengals.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Danny Allsopp scored twice to give D.C. United
a 2-0 victory over the Philadelphia Union yesterday and snap a
five-game losing streak. The Union have extended their winless
stretch to a season-worst six games and were shut out for the first
time in nine matches.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Hawaii, Texas, Mexico, Panama and
Japan are moving on in the Little League World Series in
Williamsport. The Hawaiian team beat the squad from Toms River, New
Jersey, 3-1 in an elimination game yesterday. Meantime, Texas
routed Connecticut 14-1. Mexico, Panama and Japan also won early
games Sunday, while squads from Germany, Saudi Arabia and Puerto
Rico were eliminated.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Roy Halladay pitched seven shutout innings to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 1-0 victory over the Washington Nationals last night. The Phillies have won 13 of their last 17 games. They're 2 1/2 games behind the Braves in the NL East.

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - Authorities in Florida say Philadelphia Phillies' pitching prospect Tyson Gillies has been arrested for having cocaine. The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office says his
arrest today stemmed from an incident in June. He was released on $2,000 bond. The Phillies declined to comment.

N.Y. Mets 7, Pittsburgh 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - David Wright and Jose Reyes each had three of the Mets' slump-ending 15 hits to lead the team past the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-2 last night. Mike Pelfrey pitched eight innings and New York assured the Pirates of their record-extending 18th consecutive losing season.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittbsurgh Pirates president Frank Coonelly says he expects the team's payroll to increase next season - but not to the point where the last-place team can afford to sign a premium free agent. The Pirates began the season with a major league-low $34 million payroll, though Coonelly says the end-of-season figure will be about $44 million.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies couldn't close out a sweep
against the Giants, losing 5-2 last night. Jonathan Sanchez allowed
just two hits in eight innings and Buster Posey lined a pair of RBI
doubles. San Francisco stopped its three-game losing streak and
ended the Phillies' four-game winning string.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The dog days of summer continue for the
Pirates, who lost 4-2 to the Marlins last night in Pittsburgh.
Florida's Alex Sanabia pitched 7-plus innings of four-hit ball and
Gaby Sanchez hit a three-run homer. Andrew McCutchen homered for
the third time in four games for Pittsburgh, which clinched its
18th consecutive non-winning season.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phillies slugger Ryan Howard will start a
rehab assignment today with the club's Class-A affiliate in
Lakewood, Florida. The All-Star first baseman has been sidelined
with a sprained left ankle since August 2nd. Barring any setbacks,
Howard will play at Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Saturday and could
rejoin Philadelphia on Monday.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates have added 16-year-old Mexican
right-hander Luis Heredia to their system, agreeing to purchase his
rights from the Veracruz Red Eagles of the Mexican Baseball League.
The 6-foot-6 Heredia was ranked by Baseball America as the top
pitching prospect internationally entering the year. His fastball
has been clocked in the mid-90s.

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) - Steelers coach Mike Tomlin says quarterback
Ben Roethlisberger will play in tomorrow's exhibition game against
the New York Giants, but isn't saying whether he will start the
game. Roethlisberger has worked with the starting offense most of
this week at training camp, an indication he will open the game.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Eli Manning isn't the only Giants
quarterback who will miss New York's preseason game against the
Pittsburgh Steelers. Backup Jim Sorgi is out, too. Agent Matt Brei
says Sorgi had an MRI on Thursday and was diagnosed with a torn
capsule that will sideline him two to three weeks.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - It's time to play ball again at
the Little League World Series. The annual 10-day tournament to

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Florida's Josh Johnson shook off a five-game
winless streak and withstood two solo home runs over eight innings
to lead the Marlins past the Pirates 3-2 last night. Ryan Doumit
homered in the second and Andrew McCutchen hit his 11th with two
outs in the eighth, but the Pirates still dropped their ninth in 10
games.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates have sent right-hander
Chris Jakubauskas outright to Triple-A Indianapolis after
reinstating him from the 60-day disabled list and removing him from
their 40-man roster. Jakubauskas sustained a concussion when he was
hit in the head by a line drive off the bat of Lance Berkman on
April 24th in Houston.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jimmy Rollins hit a three-run homer, Joe
Blanton pitched into the seventh and the Phillies beat the San
Francisco Giants 8-2 last night. The two-time NL champions have won
20 of 25 and moved two games ahead of the Giants in the wild-card
race. The Phillies remain 2 1/2 games behind Atlanta in the East.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - The Eagles have ended one of their longer
and more physical training camps under head coach Andy Reid at
Lehigh University. Players have returned to Philadelphia, where
they will board a plane to Cincinnati today for their second
preseason game tomorrow night.

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) - The Steelers are hoping to have their
secondary situation settled as training camp comes to a close. A
year after having the league's best pass defense while winning the
Super Bowl, the Steelers fell all the way to Number 16 last season.
Safety Troy Polamalu's lengthy injury absences played a major role
in the falloff - he played in only three full games.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is going to use
punter Daniel Sepulveda for kickoffs in Saturday night's preseason
game against the Giants. Tomlin says has Sepulveda impressed him
with kickoffs during training camp and says he's a "viable
candidate" to at least share kickoff chores with kicker Jeff Reed.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Eli Manning is going to sit out the New York
Giants' preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday
night. Coach Tom Coughlin announced the decision after a scarred
Manning did not practice on yesterday at training camp at the
University at Albany because of stitches in his forehead.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - President Barack Obama will welcome 33 NCAA
national championship teams, including two from Villanova, at a
White House ceremony next month. The Wildcats are the defending
Football Championship Subdivision champs and will attend the
ceremony September 13th. Villanova's women's cross-crountry team
will be there, too. They won the 2009 Division I title.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies are the NL's wild card leaders
after a 9-3 win over San Francisco last night. Roy Oswalt pitched
seven sharp innings, while Placido Polanco had four hits. The
Phillies took a one-game lead over San Francisco in the NL
wild-card race. The two-time NL champions remain 2 1/2 games behind
Atlanta in the East.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phillies All-Star second baseman Chase Utley
has been activated from the disabled list, less than seven weeks
after he had thumb surgery. Utley was 0 for 5 in his return last
night. To make room for Utley, Greg Dobbs was designated for
assignment. Dobbs was hitting .191 with four homers and 14 RBIs in
76 games.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Phillies manager Charlie Manuel says All-Star
first baseman Ryan Howard is "getting close" to returning. Howard
has been sidelined with a left ankle strain.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Florida's Ricky Nolasco pitched six shutout
innings and the Marlins snapped a four-game losing streak with a
6-0 win over the Pirates last night. Jose Tabata and Pedro Alvarez
each had two hits for Pittsburgh, which has lost eight of nine and
was shut out for the 13th time this season.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Brian Westbrook was greeted by loud
applause from 49ers fans attending the team's open practice
yesterday as he trotted onto the field for the first workout with
his new team. Westbrook signed a one-year deal with the 49ers on
Monday. The former Philadelphia Eagles star took part in individual
drills and did some light running.

VOORHEES, N.J. (AP) - Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger says there
is no timetable to start skating following minor surgery on his
right knee earlier this month. Pronger didn't say if he would be
ready during training camp or by the start of the season in
October. Pronger says he's in "no hurry" to return and wants to
make sure the leg is 100 percent before hitting the ice.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State's offensive line has some
familiar names in new places, plus plenty of question marks. Stefen
Wisniewski, though, figures to provide a calming influence for
coach Joe Paterno's front five. The third-year starter has shifted
from center, where he took first-team conference honors last
season, back to right guard, where he was a second-teamer in 2008.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates have snapped their seven game
losing streak with a 7-1 win over the Marlins in Florida last
night. James McDonald pitched seven sharp innings, while Garrett
Jones and Pedro Alvarez each drove in three runs.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates have signed the Number 2 overall
pick in the June amateur draft, Houston high school right-hander
Jameson Taillon. They've also inked second-round pick Stetson
Allie, another right-hander with a power arm. The moves mean the
Pirates kept up their recent tradition of being among the
highest-spending teams in the draft.

HOSUTON (AP) - The Pirates say shortstop Ronny Cedeno still
can't swing the bat without pain. He was used as a pinch runner on
Saturday, but the team may decide later this week to put him on the
disabled list. He has pain in his left shoulder.

NEW YORK (AP) - The Phillies say slugger Ryan Howard won't
return to the club today, the first day he is eligible to come off
the disabled list. Howard had his sore ankle taped Sunday and took
some swings in the batting cage. The Phillies begin a ten-game
homestand today with the first of three games against the Giants.

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) - Dennis Dixon is off to a running start as he
tries to overtake Byron Leftwich and become the Steelers' starting
quarterback during Ben Roethlisberger's suspension. But the
Steelers don's want the mobile Dixon abandoning the pocket and
running while he has open receivers downfield. So the quarterback
rotation remains unchanged for now.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Panthers freshman defensive end
Bryan Murphy will likely take a redshirt year after having surgery
on a broken bone in his foot. He got hurt during Saturday's
scrimmage. Murphy is expected to be sidelined at least six weeks.

NEW YORK (AP) - Villanova, Tennessee, Wake Forest and UCLA will
serve as the regional hosts for the 2010 NIT Season Tip-Off. The
North Regional will have Villanova hosting Marist and George
Washington against Boston University. The winners advance to New
York's Madison Square Garden for the semifinals on November 24th.
The championship game is November 26th.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Famed sports attorney Chuck Greenberg not only
has a new title as managing partner and chief executive officer of
baseball's Texas Rangers, he's got a new working address, too.
Greenberg has joined the Pittsburgh-based law firm of Reed Smith
LLP. He was previously a partner in the Pittsburgh office of Pepper
Hamilton, where he headed that firm's sports practice.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Joe L. Brown, the general manager whose shrewd
trading and expert rebuilding of the Pittsburgh Pirates farm system
resulted in two World Series championships, has died at the age of
91 following an extended illness. Brown's death occurred less than
two months after he attended a reunion of the 1960 Pirates in
Pittsburgh.

NEW YORK (AP) - The Phillies are now tied with the Giants for
the wild card lead after a 3-1 win last night over the Mets. Kyle
Kendrick toyed with New York's sputtering offense into the seventh
inning. Jimmy Rollins stole two bases and Shane Victorino swiped
another to help manufacture two-out runs for the Phillies, who took
two out of three in the series.

NEW YORK (AP) - There's mixed news for the Phillies on the
injury front. Second baseman Chase Utley was 0 for 3 in his second
rehab outing for Class A Clearwater. He also made an error. Utley
could return to the team in this week. Meanwhile, first baseman
Ryan Howard's ankle was feeling a bit sore Sunday and it's unlikely
he will be activated from the DL tomorrow when he is eligible.

HOUSTON (AP) - Houston pinch-hitter Pedro Feliz hit a two-run
double in Houston's four-run sixth inning and the Astros extended
the Pittsburgh Pirates' skid to seven games with an 8-2 victory
yesterday. Hunter Pence and Chris Johnson had three hits apiece for
Houston, which trailed 2-1 after five innings.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ben Roethlisberger might not take another snap
at Heinz Field until his suspension for off-the-field behavior ends
in October. Roethlisberger never warmed up, put his helmet on or
stepped into the huddle on a rainy Saturday night as the Steelers
beat the Detroit Lions 23-7 in a preseason game. Roethlisberger
lobbied to play, but Tomlin had already made up his mind.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Unfortunately for the officials, it was open
mic night at Heinz Field Saturday. After the Steelers scored their
first touchdown Saturday in a 23-7 exhibition victory over the
Lions, referee Jeff Triplette's field microphone picked up
expletives uttered by him or one of his crew members apparently
aimed at the replay official.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - Eagles center Jamaal Jackson and guard
Todd Herremans were both taken off the physically unable to perform
list as the team returned to practice at Lehigh University
yesterday. Jackson has been trying to come back from a torn ACL
from the 15th game of the 2009 season and Herremans has been
dealing with a sore foot. The Eagles beat the Jaguars 28-27 Friday
night in their preseason opener.

CHESTER, Pa. (AP) - Danny Mwanga scored in the 73rd minute to
give the Philadelphia Union a 1-1 tie with the Colorado Rapids on
Saturday. The rookie's seventh goal of the season came on an
assists from Sebastien Le Toux. Philadelphia is winless with three
ties in its past five games.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - The Padres notched an 8-5 win over the Pirates
last night. San Diego starter Kevin Correia took a one-hit shutout
into the seventh inning. He faced the minimum through 6-and-a-third
innings before the Pirates chased him during a four-run rally in
the seventh. Miguel Tejada scored three runs for the Padres, who
beat the Pirates for the fifth straight time this season.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Roy Oswalt finally got a start in
Philadelphia and pitched seven impressive innings in his home
debut. Two relievers finished off the six-hitter and the Phillies
beat the Dodgers 2-0 last night. The two-time NL champions are 15-4
since July 22nd, but lost another player when Ross Gload left with
a strained right groin.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phillies second baseman Chase Utley has been
cleared to start hitting, six weeks after surgery on his right
thumb. Assistant general manager Scott Proefrock says the news is
encouraging, but the team is sticking to its original timetable for
Utley's return of at least eight weeks.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A person familiar with the deal says the
Philadelphia 76ers have hired Rod Thorn as their new team
president. The person says that team president Ed Stefanski will
stay on as general manager. Stefanski had held both roles for the
past three years. Thorn was president and general manager of the
Nets for 10 years before leaving in early July.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - Security guards at Eagles training camp at
Lehigh University asked a fan to take off a replica Washington
Redskins Donovan McNabb jersey. Jim Devlin tells Philadelphia's
WPEN-FM that the guard who confronted him said the request had come
from coach Andy Reid. A team spokesman denies that Reid even knew
the fan was present.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - Eagles rookie free safety Nate Allen has
solidified his position as a starter with his play during training
camp. Defensive coordinator Sean McDermott calls Allen unshakable,
and says the second-round pick from South Florida has earned the
respect of his peers.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - The two most prominent Nittany Lions
this season are head coach Joe Paterno and running back Evan
Royster and both can surpass major milestones. Royster is just 480
yards shy of Curt Warner's career rushing record at the school.
Meanwhile, Paterno is just six wins shy of the 400 career victories
mark.

CHESTER, Pa. (AP) - Fabian Espindola scored in the 17th minute
to help Real Salt Lake earn a 1-1 draw against the Philadelphia
Union last night. Rookie Danny Mwanga scored for the Union off a
nifty pass from Sebastien Le Toux, before Espindola gathered in a
pass from Tony Beltran and took advantage of a slip by Juan Diego
Gonzalez.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Nellie King, the former Pittsburgh Pirates
pitcher and broadcaster who later became the sports information
director and golf coach at Duquesne University, has died at the age
of 82 after several years of health problems. King grew up in
Hershey.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Waynesburg's Rachel Rohanna has advanced
after yesterday's start of match play at the U.S. Women's Amateur
at Charlotte Country Club. Rohanna defeated New Jersey's Isabel Han
1 up on the par-72 course. Second- and third-round matches are
today, with quarterfinals Friday and semifinals Saturday. The final
will be 36 holes on Sunday.

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) - The Steelers are seeing a big improvement
this year in second-year defensive end Ziggy Hood. Hood was the

rookie while adjusting to the 3-4 defense. Hood is beginning to
show his talent in his second training camp with the team.

his 13th save in 17 chances.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Troy Tulowitzki hit a tiebreaking RBI single
with two out in the seventh and the Colorado Rockies beat the
Pittsburgh Pirates 6-3 last night to snap a seven-game road losing
streak. Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez each had three hits for the
Rockies, who have won six of eight overall as they fight to stay in
the National League playoff race.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates cleared roster space for reliever
Chan Ho Park by optioning left-handed reliever Justin Thomas to
Triple-A Indianapolis. Park was claimed off waivers from the New
York Yankees on Wednesday. The move means the Pirates have only one
lefty - Wil Ledezma - in their bullpen.

CANTON, Ohio (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers defensive coordinator
Dick LeBeau gets his due in Canton today. He hasn't suited up as a
player in decades, but he's one of seven inductees. LeBeau is
considered the mastermind of the zone blitz and other defenses. The
Steelers will bus to Canton from their training camp for the
ceremony.

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) - Dick LeBeau will be 73 next month and is the
NFL's oldest coordinator. That doesn't bother him. What makes him
mad is when critics point to how old his defense is getting. He
says he considers himself fortunate that he's still coaching six of
the 11 starters from the Steelers' Super Bowl victory over Seattle
five years ago.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pitt Panthers start preseason practice
Saturday, and what coach Dave Wannstedt likes is how his players
are handling the expectations placed upon them as the Big East
Conference preseason favorites. The team has a new quarterback, two
new cornerbacks, two new offensive guards and a new center.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt says he's
comfortable with his decision to not hold defensive end Jabaal
Sheard out of game action despite throwing a man through an art
gallery's glass door during a fight last month. Sheard has
apologized and pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct. games.

SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) - A former NFL lineman has been sentenced to
two years in federal prison for accepting a bribe while serving as
a Luzerne County commissioner. Greg Skrepenak was also ordered
yesterday to pay $5,100 in fines and court costs. Skrepenak played
six seasons in the NFL as an offensive lineman for the Raiders and
Panthers.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - James McDonald pitched six shutout innings in
his Pittsburgh debut and the Pirates sent the Rockies to their
seventh consecutive road loss, 5-1 last night. Five days after
being acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers for closer Octavio
Dotel, McDonald had eight strikeouts - as many as any Pirates
starter has had all season. Garrett Jones and Ronny Cedeno homered
for Pittsburgh.

MIAMI (AP) - Philadelphia's Carlos Ruiz homered leading off the
10th inning and the Phillies benefited from a bad call to complete
a three-game series sweep by beating the Florida Marlins 5-4 last
night. An umpire's ruling cost the Marlins a victory in the ninth.
Gaby Sanchez pulled a grounder over third base for a hit that would
have scored the winning run, but it was ruled foul.

MIAMI (AP) - Five-time All-Star Mike Sweeney says he'll be happy
with any job the Philadelphia Phillies give him, and he's hoping
the payoff will be his first postseason berth. Sweeney joined his
new team yesterday after being traded by Seattle. He gives the
Phillies some depth at first base, where starter Ryan Howard has
gone on the disabled list.

NEW YORK (AP) - Pedro Martinez plans to stay retired despite
offers the past two weeks from several teams. The three-time Cy
Young Award winner says he turned them down but was flattered by
the invitations. Martinez signed with Philadelphia in July of last
year, going 5-1 down the stretch and helping the Phillies reach the
World Series. He hasn't said which teams were pursuing him.

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) - NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has talked
briefly to Ben Roethlisberger during a visit to the Steelers'
training camp, but hasn't yet decided whether the quarterback's
suspension for bad behavior will be reduced. Goodell won't decide
whether to trim the suspension from six to four games until the end
of the month.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Preseason training camp is under way
in Happy Valley for coach Joe Paterno and his Penn State Nittany
Lions. One of the biggest questions in camp is who will replace
departed starter Darryl Clark at quarterback. Former walk-on Matt
McGloin thinks he has a shot at the position, but Kevin Newsome
looks to be the front-runner.

PARK RIDGE, Ill. (AP) - The Big Ten has selected Lucas Oil
Stadium in Indianapolis as the proposed site for the conference's
first football championship game to be played December 2011. The
Big Ten says it will begin negotiations on a one-year agreement
with Indiana Sports Corporation and Lucas Oil Stadium to host the
game.

CHESTER, Pa. (AP) - Steven Lenhart scored two goals to help the
Columbus Crew win on the road for the first time since in more than
two months, beating the Philadelphia Union 2-1 last night in
Chester. Sebastien Le Toux scored for the Union, who dropped to
3-2-2 at home.

NEW YORK (AP) - Pittsburgh will face Maryland and Illinois will
play Texas in the semifinals of the 2K Sports Classic benefiting
Coaches vs. Cancer. The four schools will serve as regional hosts
for the 12-team tournament that will begin on November 8th, with
the semifinals set for November 18th at Madison Square Garden. The
championship game will be the next day.

MIAMI (AP) - The Phillies routed the Marlins 7-2 last night with
the help of three RBIs from rookie Domonic Brown. Kyle Kendrick
pitched six effective innings and Raul Ibanez added two RBIs as the
Phillies won for the 11th time in 13 games.

SEATTLE (AP) - The Seattle Mariners have traded veteran first
baseman and designated hitter Mike Sweeney to the Philadelphia
Phillies for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
Seattle first activated Sweeney from the disabled list then dealt
the clubhouse leader.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Cincinnati Reds knocked off the Pirates
9-4 yesterday in a matinee game in Pittsburgh. Johnny Cueto
dominated the Pirates again over six innings, while Paul Janish
homered and drove in four runs for Cincinnati. Jeff Karstens takes
the loss for Pittsburgh.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Center fielder Andrew McCutchen was back in
the Pittsburgh lineup, a day after being struck in the neck by a
90-mph fastball thrown by the Reds' Mike Leake. McCutchen has a
bruised neck, but X-rays were negative. He didn't sustain a
concussion while being hit by Leake's pitch during the Pirates' 7-6
victory over Cincinnati on Tuesday night.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates have claimed right-handed reliever
Chris Resop off waivers from the Atlanta Braves. He pitched in one
game for Atlanta this season, giving up five runs in two innings
before going on the disabled list June 16th with a strained rib
cage muscle. He's 3-3 with a 6.14 ERA in 58 career games with the
Marlins, Angels and Braves.

WESTMINSTER, Md. (AP) - NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is doing more than he was
asked to do by the league when given a six-game suspension after
being accused of sexual assault. Goodell says he'll meet with
Roethlisberger before the regular season starts in September and
determine whether to reduce the punishment to four games.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie
says Michael Vick's mistake in judgment shouldn't be confused with
any wrongdoing. Speaking to reporters yesterday for the first time
since that incident, Lurie says Vick shouldn't have attended his
birthday party in Virginia Beach where a man was shot. But he adds
that Vick is a "great teammate" and praises his community
service.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - University of Pittsburgh defensive end Jabaal
Sheard has been reinstated to the team after pleading guilty to
disorderly conduct for a fight last month in which he threw a man
through an art gallery's glass door. Coach Dave Wannstedt says
Sheard also will be disciplined by the team. Pitt opens preseason
camp Saturday.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pirates rookie Neil Walker had three hits and
drove in a career-high four runs and the last-place Bucs snapped a
five-game losing streak, holding on for a 7-6 victory over the
first-place Reds last night. The Pirates had a scare when
outfielder Andrew McCutchen left the game after he was hit by a
pitch in the back of the neck.

MIAMI (AP) - Philadelphia's Roy Halladay gave up just a run in
seven innings as the Phillies beat the Florida Marlins 6-1 last
night. It was Halladay's first start in South Florida since
throwing a perfect game in Miami back in May. Injury-plagued
Philadelphia played without slugger Ryan Howard, who before the
game went on the 15-day disabled list because of a sprained left
ankle.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has told
Michael Vick he won't face disciplinary action following a shooting
at the quarterback's Virginia Beach birthday party six weeks ago.
The NFL says Goodell spoke with Vick yesterday while visiting the
Eagles during his training camp tour.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - Eagles wide receiver Jeremy Maclin left
practice yesterday on a cart after injuring a knee. Maclin
hyperextended his left knee during afternoon workouts. Coach Andy
Reid ended practice shortly after Maclin went down. The team says
Maclin will be further evaluated today.

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) - Steelers offensive coordinator Bruce Arians
says Ben Roethlisberger's offseason troubles haven't affected the
quarterback's performance on the practice field. Arians says
Roethlisberger hasn't been in such good shape or thrown the ball as
well during any of his previous training camps.

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) - The Steelers are giving pass rusher LaMarr
Woodley every opportunity to match or surpass the 13 1/2 sacks he had
a year ago, nearly all of them during the second half of the
season. They're designing alignments that take advantage of
Woodley's proven pass-rushing skills and keep him on the field
during most downs.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger had minor
surgery on his right knee last week. Flyers general manager Paul
Holmgren says the 35-year-old Pronger will be ready for the start
of training camp next month.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Joe Paterno says he's feeling fine
heading into his 45th season as Penn State's head coach. Paterno
was forced to cancel three alumni appearances around Pennsylvania
and bow out from Big Ten meetings in the offseason because of
intestinal problems. But the 83-year-old says his illness was
nothing serious, and that he didn't miss time preparing in the
offseason.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Reds Rookie Travis Wood shut out the Pirates
on two singles over seven innings, fill-in first baseman Miguel
Cairo drove in two runs and Cincinnati beat Pittsburgh 4-0 last
night. Russ Springer and Arthur Rhodes pitched an inning each to
complete the combined three-hitter.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pirates right-hander Russ Ohlendorf was hit in
the right leg by a hard-hit shot from the Reds' Jonny Gomes in the
first inning of last night's game. The line drive ricocheted off
Ohlendorf's leg to first baseman Garrett Jones, who beat Gomes to
the bag for the out. Ohlendorf smiled and was examined by trainers
but stayed in the game.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard has left
the team in Florida to have his injured ankle examined in
Philadelphia. He'd scheduled to see team physician on today. Howard
hurt his left ankle scrambling back to second base during Sunday's
game at Washington. The Phils are in Florida for a three-game
series with the Marlins.

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers are closing training
camp to the public on Saturday so they can attend defensive
coordinator Dick LeBeau's induction into the Pro Football Hall of
Fame. The Steelers will hold a morning practice that will be closed
to spectators, then board buses for the evening ceremony in Canton,
Ohio.

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) - Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall sat
out the team's afternoon workout yesterday after having his toe
stepped on earlier in the day. Coach Mike Tomlin says Mendenhall
was held out for precautionary reasons. The injury is not believed
to be serious.

CHICAGO (AP) - Commissioner Jim Delany says he expects Penn
State and other Big Ten teams to play nine conference games next
season instead of eight to help preserve rivalries. That's because
Nebraska is joining, bringing the league to a total of 12 teams.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean
Jackson was again held out of practice yesterday. Jackson suffered
a lower back strain in training camp drills Saturday. Jackson also
missed both sessions Sunday. Last year, Jackson became the first
player in NFL history to make the Pro Bowl at two positions -
receiver and punt returner.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Managers at this month's Little
League World Series in Pennsylvania will be able to challenge
certain calls under a revised instant replay system. Umpires will
still have the option to call for a replay, though managers will
now be allowed to challenge calls or request a replay if umpires
don't ask for one.
