FLYERS-PENGUINS
Flyers jump one hurdle, face another against Pittsburgh

VOORHEES, N.J. (AP) - The Philadelphia Flyers were able to keep the high-scoring Atlanta Thrashers in check in a 3-to-2 shootout win for new coach John Stevens. But an equally daunting challenge faces them tonight (Saturday) when the recharged Pittsburgh Penguins visit. The Flyers broke a five-game losing streak with the victory over the Thrashers. They spent yesterday (Friday) discussing ways to slow Pittsburgh's premier line of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Colby Armstrong. Malkin has scored in each of his first four games since returning from a shoulder injury suffered in the preseason. Crosby is one of the N-H-L's rising young superstars. Stevens likely will use second-year center Mike Richards as a matchup against Crosby.

PENGUINS-STAAL
Penguins expected to make call soon on rookie center Staal

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Penguins have a decision to make about Jordan Staal's future. Staal, the Number Two choice in June's N-H-L draft, has been impressive in his time with the Penguins, scoring four goals in eight games. But once the center plays in his 10th game, Pittsburgh can no longer send Staal back to his junior team in Peterborough, Ontario, without being obligated to honor his N-H-L contract. One veteran says there should be no debate whether the 18-year-old Staal should stay with the Penguins beyond tonight's game against Philadelphia. While Staal's status this season could cost the Penguins financially and move up the center's eligibility for restricted and unrestricted free agency, Mark Recchi doesn't want to lose his new linemate.

JAGUARS-LEFTWICH
Jags' Leftwich misses practice again; Stroud ruled out

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Jaguars quarterback Byron Leftwich missed his second consecutive practice yesterday (Friday), a strong indication that backup David Garrard will start at Philadelphia. But coach Jack Del Rio declined to name a starter for tomorrow's (Sunday's) game. Del Rio did downgrade Marcus Stroud, saying the three-time Pro
Bowl defensive tackle will miss his third straight game with a sprained and bruised right ankle. Leftwich remained questionable on the injury report.

EAGLES-HOLLOW STATS
Great stats don't add up to wins for Eagles

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles have lit up the stat sheet more than the win column. Led by Donovan McNabb, the offense is ranked first in the N-F-L in total yards, passing yards, overall touchdowns, offensive touchdowns and passing touchdowns. The Eagles also lead the league in number of offensive plays of 20 yards or more, points outside the red zone and average yards on first down. But the most important numbers are wins and losses. A 4-and-3 record is far closer to mediocre than elite. Quick strikes and big plays are fun to watch, but turnovers easily negate those.

STEELERS-MCFADDEN
McFadden, new to Steelers' secondary, challenged by Moss

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Bryant McFadden hadn't been on Florida State's campus for more than a day when he began hearing Randy Moss stories. Moss is the Oakland Raiders receiver who will go against McFadden and the Pittsburgh Steelers tomorrow (Sunday). He had a short but eventful stay with the Seminoles without playing in a game -- leaving after testing positive for marijuana. But he created a lasting impression, often getting 14 points in practice. Even today in the N-F-L, he can easily be good for 14. McFadden, a second-round draft pick in 2005, wants the responsibility of trying to shut down Moss. This has become a more important game to the Super Bowl champions than they might have imagined before they lost four of five games.

BEARS-RIVER RATS
Hershey 4, Albany 3

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Joey Tenute scored the tie-breaking goal in the third period to lead Hershey in a 4-to-3 victory over the Albany River Rats. Tomas Fleischmann scored two second-period goals for the Bears, who also got a goal and an assist from Dave Steckel. Goaltender Frederic Cassivi made 31 saves, 16 coming in the first period when Albany had all six of its power-play chances. The Rats converted just one, Jesse Boulerice's first of two goals of the night, in the first period. The Bears answered with three goals in the second to take a 3-to-1 lead. The Bears and River Rats play again tonight (Saturday), this time at Hershey.

PENGUINS-MOOSE
Wilkes-Barre 4, Manitoba 3

UNDATED (AP) - Erik Christensen scored two goals in the third period, then Kyle Brodziak scored the game-winner as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins beat the Manitoba Moose 4-to-3. Jeff Deslauriers stopped 23-of-26 shots for Wilkes-Barre.

MLB-WORLD SERIES
Cardinals close the deal in five...Eckstein named M-V-P

ST. LOUIS (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals are celebrating their first World Series title in 24 years. The Cardinals eliminated the Detroit Tigers in five games, winning 4-to-2 last night. Diminutive Cardinals shortstop David Eckstein was named series M-V-P. He had two hits, drove in two runs and scored a run. For the series he had eight hits and batted .384. Cards manager Tony LaRussa joined Sparky Anderson as the only managers to win a World Series in both leagues. Jeff Weaver pitched eight strong innings for the win. He allowed two runs on four hits while striking out nine. Adam Wainwright closed out the Tigers in the ninth, striking out Brandon Inge (ihnj) with two runners on base for the final out. Detroit was doomed by lack of offense and poor fielding. The Tigers scored just eleven runs and committed eight errors in the five-game series. Five of those errors were by Detroit pitchers, one in each game. The Tigers allowed eight unearned runs, the most allowed by a team in the World Series since 1956. Parity is alive in major league baseball -- the Cards are the seventh different team to win the series in the last seven years.

MLB-NIEKRO-OBIT
Former major leaguer pitcher Joe Niekro dies

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Former major league pitcher Joe Niekro (NEE'-kroh), Houston's career leader with 221 wins, died yesterday at 61. The two-time 20-game winner suffered a brain aneurysm Thursday. Astros President Tal Smith says Niekro's death was a shock. Niekro was the father of San Francisco Giants first baseman Lance Niekro. Joe won 221 games in his career but never became as well known as his Hall of Fame brother Phil. Like his older brother, Joe Niekro found success after developing the knuckleball and pitched into his 40s. They had a combined 539 major league victories, a record for brothers.

MLB-GIANTS/BOCHY
Giants get new skipper

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Bruce Bochy (BOH'-chee) is the new manager of the San Francisco Giants. He and the Giants' brass came to terms on a three-year deal Thursday night. Bochy recently completed his 12th season as manager of the San Diego Padres. He led the club to back-to-back National League West titles and leaves as the winningest manager in franchise history. L-A Angels pitching coach Bud Black is a leading candidate to replace Bochy with the Padres.

MLB-GIANTS/BONDS
Bonds to test the marketplace

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Look for Barry Bonds to file for free agency soon. Agent Jeff Borris says "The only thing that would stop Barry from filing for free agency would be if a deal was in place from the Giants." But Borris says no negotiations have taken place with the club.

NHL-FINAL SCORES
Going Wild in Minnesota ... Blue Jackets blank the Kings

UNDATED (AP) - On N-H-L ice, Mikko Koivu (MEE'-koh KOY'-voo) scored the lone goal in a shootout to give the Minnesota Wild a 3-to-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks in a matchup of two of the top teams in the Western Conference. It was the third shootout loss for Anaheim, which is 7-0-and-3. The Wild are 5-and-0 in overtime and 9-and-1 overall. The Wild's lone loss was a 2-to-1 decision to Anaheim on October 20th.

In the rest of the N-H-L:
-- Pascal Leclaire stopped 38 shots for his first N-H-L shutout to lead the Columbus Blue Jackets past the L-A Kings, 2-to-0. The Blue Jackets end a four-game losing skid.
-- Detroit defenseman Niklas Lidstrom scored his first two goals of the season to help the Red Wings hand the Dallas Stars their first home loss, 4-to-3. Jiri Hudler and Pavel Datsyuk (dat-SOOK') added goals for Detroit.
-- Vancouver beat Washington in a shootout, 3-to-2. Markus Naslund and Brendan Morrison scored shootout goals for the Canucks, who've won four of five.

NFL-NEWS
Locklear suspended ... Jags' and Chiefs' q-b's are ailing

UNDATED (AP) - The N-F-L has suspended Seahawks starting right tackle Sean Locklear for tomorrow's game at Kansas City for violating its personal conduct policy. Locklear was arrested January 15th on a charge of assaulting his girlfriend outside a downtown Seattle nightspot. Tom Ashworth will make his first start for the Seahawks in Locklear's place. He started 30 regular-season games over the previous three seasons for the New England Patriots, 27 of them at right tackle.

In other pro football news:
- Jacksonville quarterback Byron Leftwich missed a second-straight practice yesterday due to an injured ankle. That makes it likely that David Garrard will get the call Sunday against Philadelphia.
- Kansas City signal caller Damon Huard missed yesterday's practice with a groin problem suffered in Thursday's practice. Number-one q-b Trent Green is still recovering from a concussion, so coach Herm Edwards says if Huard can't start against Seattle, rookie Brodie Croyle will get the nod.
- Cincinnati has activated wide receiver Chris Henry, meaning he'll be available for Sunday's game with the Atlanta Falcons. Henry had been benched by the Bengals for one game and suspended by the N-F-L for two more for violating the league's personal conduct and substance abuse policies. He has been arrested four times since December.
- San Francisco defensive tackle Bryant Young will play Sunday at Chicago despite missing today's practice with a sore back. The 49ers also expect left guard Larry Allen and left tackle Jonas Jennings to be back after missing most of the season with injuries.
- Browns center LeCharles Bentley was recently hospitalized with a staph infection following season-ending knee surgery, raising concerns of contamination at Cleveland's training facility. Bentley's infection is the fifth known case of staph for a Browns player in the past three years.
- The attorney for Jacksonville defensive end Bobby McCray says a drug possession charge against his client was dropped.

PRO FOOTBALL-HALL
Nominees named

CANTON, Ohio (AP) - The Pro Football Hall of Fame has released the initial list of nominees for the class of 2007. Among the group of 111 are Terrell Davis, Bruce Matthews, Randall Cunningham, Michael Irvin, Thurman Thomas and former N-F-L commissioner Paul Tagliabue (TAG'-lee-uh-boo). The list will be reduced to 15 before the final vote next February third -- a day before the Super Bowl in Miami.

NBA-PRESEASON NEWS
Grant K-O'd by bad knees...Sonics' Fortson suspended for opener

UNDATED (AP) - Chronic knee problems are forcing Brian Grant to retire from the N-B-A after 12 seasons in the league. The 34-year-old Grant played for the Sacramento Kings, Portland Trail Blazers, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix Suns. Grant averaged ten and a-half points and almost seven and a-half rebounds over his pro career.

In other N-B-A news:
-- The N-B-A has slapped Seattle SuperSonics forward Danny Fortson with a one-game suspension. It's for a flagrant foul on Ron Artest during Wednesday night's preseason game against Sacramento. He'll sit out when the Sonics open the season on November First against Portland.
-- Seattle SuperSonics center Robert Swift will miss the entire 2006-2007 season. He suffered a torn A-C-L in his right knee two nights ago during an exhibition game with Sacramento.
-- New Orleans Hornets backup center Marc Jackson will miss the start of the regular season because of a strained left hamstring. He's out indefinitely.

PGA-WOODS
Woods to skip Tour Championship

PALM HARBOR, Fla. (AP) - Tiger Woods won't be playing in next week's Tour Championship. This marks the first time in his career he's skipped the event. Woods says he's mentally and physically tired from a long stretch of golf through the Ryder Cup. Masters champion Phil Mickelson had previously said he'll be skipping the tournament as well.

PGA-CHRYSLER CLASSIC
Choi has the lead in Florida

PALM HARBOR, Fla. (AP) - K.J. Choi is the second-round clubhouse leader at the P-G-A's Chrysler Classic. He shot a 5-under-par-66 today and stands 8-under-par for the tournament. Ernie Els also shot a 66 and is minus-seven after 36 holes. This is the P-G-A Tour's final full-field event of the year.

CHAMPIONS TOUR-SCHWAB CUP
Kite halfway home

SONOMA, Calif. (AP) - Tom Kite eagled the par-four eleventh hole for the second straight round and finished with a 4-under 68 to take a one-stroke lead over Jay Haas and Jim Thorpe after two rounds of the Champions Tour's Charles Schwab Cup Championship. Haas shot a 66 to match opening-leader Thorpe, who shot a 70.

GOLF-DUBAI
Sorenstam leads after two

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) - Annika Sorenstam remains on top of the Dubai Ladies Masters at the midway mark. She followed her opening round 65 with a 4-under-68 today and leads by five shots. Karrie (KAHR'-ee) Webb is alone in second place.

LPGA-SOUTH KOREAN STOP
South Koreans top leaderboard in homeland

GYEONGJU, South Korea (AP) - South Korean's have the top two spots after the opening round of the L-P-G-A's Kolon-Hana Bank Championship, being played in South Korea. Joo Mi Kim shot a 6-under-66 to lead countrywoman and defending champion Jee Young Lee by one stroke. Paula Creamer and Koreans Hee-Won Han and Jeong Jang are among a group of six tied for third, two shots off the lead.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-NICKLAUS
Another honor for Jack

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Another honor for Jack Nicklaus. When the Ohio State band does its famous Ohio script at halftime of today's game against Minnesota, the "I" will be dotted by Ohio State graduate Nicklaus, only the fourth non-band member accorded that honor.

NASCAR-RAIN
Qualifying rained out

HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) - Rain washed out yesterday's qualifying for Sunday's Bass Pro Shops 500 Nextel Cup race at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. NASCAR set the field by using season points and that means series leader Matt Kenseth will start from the pole.

RACING-CHAMP CAR
Rice replaces Allmendinger

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Veteran Buddy Rice, the winner of the 2004 Indianapolis 500, has signed on to replace A.J. Allmendinger on the Forsythe Racing team for the Champ Car finale in Mexico. Allmendinger left the team earlier this week when he signed a multi-year contract with Team Red Bull on the NASCAR circuit. Allmendinger won five of nine races for Forsythe this season.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Marlin McKeever, a two-time All-American at Southern California who played 13 years in the N-F-L, died yesterday of head injuries from a fall at his home earlier this week. He was 66. McKeever headed the Trojan Football Alumni Club. McKeever fell at his home late Tuesday, and was hospitalized Wednesday with a

OBIT-McKEEVER
Former Southern California star dies at 66

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Marlin McKeever, a two-time All-American at Southern California who played 13 years in the N-F-L, died yesterday of head injuries from a fall at his home earlier this week. He was 66. McKeever headed the Trojan Football Alumni Club. McKeever fell at his home late Tuesday, and was hospitalized Wednesday with a
blood clot on his brain. His twin brother Mike McKeever died in 1967 of head injuries from an automobile accident after spending 22 months in a coma. He also had a blood clot on his brain.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) - Mike Tyson's return to boxing felt like a circus. The former heavyweight champion opened his "World Tour" on Friday night with a ho-hum performance in a four-round exhibition against Corey "T-Rex" Sanders. He's a former sparring partner who outweighed Tyson by 50 pounds. Tyson was gasping for air during each of the two and a-half-minute rounds. He decked Sanders early in the first round and then had to hold up his opponent moments later after staggering him with a flurry of punches. Tyson called the exhibition "fun" but says he underestimated how tough it would be.

DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Tigers will have had exactly one week's rest before taking the field for the Motor City's first home World Series game in 22 years. The Tigers open the best-of-seven Fall Classic against the St. Louis Cardinals, whose pitching staff was stretched to the limit in a seven-game series against the New York Mets. The Tigers have been idle since wrapping up an A-L-C-S sweep of Oakland last Saturday. This is the third time Detroit and St. Louis have hooked up for all the marbles. They split a pair of seven-game classics. St. Louis won in 1934 with Dizzy Dean and the Gashouse Gang. The Tigers turned the tables in '68, roaring from a 3-to-1 deficit to win the final three games as Mickey Lolich outdueled Bob Gibson in the finale.

DETROIT (AP) - Detroit manager Jim Leyland (LEE'-luhnd) will send rookie right-hander Justin Verlander to the mound in tonight's World Series opener against Anthony Reyes (RAY'-uhs) for St. Louis. Verlander was 17-and-9 during the season. Reyes is setting a major league record for fewest wins by a World Series Game One starter. He was 5-and-8 during the season. Another Detroit 17-game winner, Kenny Rogers, is set up to pitch two games at home. The veteran left-hander gets the ball Sunday for Game Two and would return for a Game Six if it becomes necessary. Rogers goes against Jeff Weaver, who was 5-and-4 for Tony LaRussa's club this season. Nate Robertson will be Detroit's Game Three starter, followed by Jeremy Bonderman in Game Four. La Russa has not announced his starters for Games Three and Four, though it's likely Chris Carpenter and Jeff Suppan (SOO'-pahn) will get the nods.

UNDATED (AP) - Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire is reaping the rewards of leading the Twins to the American League Central title. He's agreed to a two-year extension that will keep him under contract through 2009.

Elsewhere in baseball:
-- The Boston Red Sox have found a replacement for hitting coach Ron Jackson, whose contract was not renewed after the club finished with the third-lowest team batting average in the American League. Former big leaguer Dave Magadan has accepted the position. He was fired as San Diego's batting instructor in mid-June when the Padres team batting average dropped to a National League-worst .252.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The San Francisco Chronicle has agreed to be held in contempt of court in the Barry Bonds grand jury leak case regarding steroid use. The newspaper might have to pay perhaps hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines for refusing to assist a federal grand jury investigating who leaked the secret testimony of Bonds and other athletes, according to a court filing. Chronicle reporters Lance Williams and Mark Fainaru-Wada could be jailed for as much as 18 months or until they agree to divulge the source or sources of the leak. The agreement is largely procedural, allowing the case to move before the appeals court.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Even though the Philadelphia Eagles have allowed more yards passing than usual, quarterbacks shouldn't salivate at the thought of facing a once-vaunted secondary. The Eagles are 26th against the pass, allowing an average of 237-point-seven yards through the air per game. They've also given up eight touchdowns and strong safety Michael Lewis has struggled to the point he was benched in the fourth quarter last Sunday. But defensive coordinator Jim Johnson is confident a unit that includes five-time Pro Bowl free safety Brian Dawkins, former Pro Bowl cornerback Lito Sheppard and fellow cornerback Sheldon Brown is still a formidable group. Lewis bit on a fake and gave up Joe Horn's tying 48-yard T-D catch in a 27-to-24 loss to the Saints last week. Lewis was replaced by second-year pro Sean Considine and both are expected to play against Tampa Bay on Sunday.

UNDATED (AP) - Indianapolis Colts Pro Bowl safety Bob Sanders and wide receiver Brandon Stokley will not play Sunday against the Washington Redskins. Sanders has missed the last three games after having arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, while Stokley continues to rehab a sprained left knee that he injured in the Colts' October Eighth game against Tennessee.

Elsewhere around the league:
- Jacksonville quarterback Byron Leftwich missed practice with a sore left ankle and has been added to the club's injury report and listed as questionable for Sunday's game at Houston. Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio says Leftwich will have an M-R-I.
- Cincinnati activated running back Chris Perry. He sat out the first five games of the season with ankle and knee injuries. Perry often is used in passing situations and could play an important role Sunday against Carolina since three Bengals receivers are sidelined by injury or suspension.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Illinois would like to spoil Penn State's homecoming weekend, just like how the Nittany Lions did to the Illini last season. That game was over by halftime, when Penn State led by 53 points on the way to a 63-to-10 rout, so linebacker Dan Connor thinks Illinois wouldn't mind ruining the fun tomorrow in Happy Valley. Recent history gives Penn State the edge: the Nittany Lions are 8-and-1 against Illinois since joining the conference in 1993, the lone loss coming in 2001 at Illinois. Lately this season, the Illini have had trouble hanging on to leads, having lost their last two contests.

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Pat White ran for 102 yards and a touchdown and threw a scoring pass to help fourth-ranked West Virginia win its 14th straight game, 37-to-11 over Connecticut. Steve Slaton added 128 yards rushing for the 7-and-0 Mountaineers in the only Top-25 college game last night. White ran 15 times. He was 9-of-14 for 156 yards passing, with one interception. Slaton iced it with a 56-yard T-D run with five-26 left. Pat McAfee added three field goals, including a career-long 48-yarder. U-Conn fell to 3-and-4. With the win, the men from Morgantown at the moment are tied for the longest Division One-A winning streak. But that could change soon. Top-ranked Ohio State brings a 14-game winning streak into its game against visiting Indiana this afternoon.

DETROIT (AP) - Former Michigan coach Bo Schembechler (SHEM'-bek-lur) is in a Michigan hospital's cardiac-care unit for observation after he felt ill at the taping of a weekly television show. A hospital spokesman says Bo is in good condition. Schembechler was an intense disciplinarian in his coaching days, which ended in 1989. He had a heart attack on the eve of his first Rose Bowl, in 1970, and another heart attack in 1987. He has undergone two quadruple heart bypass operations.

Olli Jokinen (OH'-lee YOH'-kuh-nehn) scored the game-winning goal late in the second period and the Florida Panthers beat Philadelphia, 3-to-2. That's the Flyers' fifth straight loss. Florida has started the season 4-and-0 at home for the first time since the 1995 season when they made it to the Stanley Cup finals.

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (AP) - Kurt Busch has won the pole for Sunday's Nextel Cup Subway 500. It's his sixth pole of the season. His speed of 97-point-568 miles per hour on the half-mile oval pushed Jeff Gordon to the outside of the front row. Denny Hamlin, Ryan Newman and Tony Stewart round out the top five. Chase for the championship leader Jeff Burton qualified 27th, last among the ten drivers who still have a chance to win the title.

NFL: EAGLES-SAINTS PREVIEW
McNabb, Bush gearing up to take center stage against Saints

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - By lifting their teams to emotional victories last week, Donovan McNabb and Reggie Bush made the build-up for their matchup that much better. The league's hottest quarterback and its most hyped rookie take center stage at the Superdome tomorrow as the Philadelphia Eagles face the New Orleans Saints. The spotlight will be squarely on McNabb and Bush this week after neither really was the focus going into their games last Sunday. All of the hoopla surrounding Terrell Owens' return to Philadelphia clearly did not bother McNabb, who threw for 354 yards and two touchdowns -- he also ran for a score -- in a 38-to-24 victory over Dallas.

NFL: CHIEFS-STEELERS PREVIEW
Struggling Steelers prepare to host Chirfs

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers haven't played like they're the Super Bowl champions. Another defeat, and they may find it difficult to defend their title. Pittsburgh looks to snap a three-game losing streak when it hosts the Kansas City Chiefs tomorrow. Since beating Miami 28-to-17 in the season opener, the Steelers have struggled in falling to Jacksonville, Cincinnati and San Diego -- who have a combined 9-and-4 record. Pittsburgh trails Baltimore by two and a-half games in the A-F-C North and only nine teams have ever rebounded from a 1-and-4 start to make the playoffs.

NHL: FLYERS-DEVILS PREVIEW
Flyers head to New Jersey - where they've had little success

VOORHEES, N.J. (AP) - The Philadelphia Flyers, sorely in need of a win, travel next to New Jersey -- a place where they've had little success over the past decade and a half. Since the start of the 1990-91 season, the Flyers are just 8-28-5-and-1 at Continental Airlines Arena, including an 0-3-and-1 mark last season. The Flyers, off to a slow start this season, visit the Devils tonight as they kick off a four-game road trip. Several players say the team's trouble in New Jersey stems from the Devils' ability to get the checking matchups they want because they get the last line changes on faceoffs at home.

NHL: PENGUINS-MALKIN
Penguins' Malkin does contact drills, could debut soon

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Penguins rookie center Evgeni Malkin took part in limited contact drills in practice with his teammates yesterday. Head coach Michel Therrien says says Malkin probably won't play today against Carolina, and doctors will decide whether he will play Wednesday against New Jersey. Therrien says Malkin could make his N-H-L debut as early as next week. Malkin -- the Number Two pick in the 2004 draft – dislocated his shoulder in a preseason game September 20th and has been out indefinitely.

FBC: WASHINGTON AND JEFFERSON-WESTMINSTER
Goodell, Ravenstahl co-captains at Washington and Jefferson homecoming

WASHINGTON, Pa. (AP) - National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl are scheduled to serve today as co-captains at Washington and Jefferson College's homecoming football game against Westminster College. Goodell and Ravenstahl are W and J alumni. They will join college President Tori Haring-Smith for the coin toss before the 2 p-m game.

LANGHORNE SPEEDWAY
Langhorne Speedway historical marker to be dedicated Saturday

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. (AP) - The site of the Langhorne Speedway will be commemorated by a state historical marker to be dedicated today. The track was billed as the first dirt track built exclusively for auto racing. It was opened in 1926 and its often rutted and slippery surface tested the nerve of the likes of Johnny Rutherford, Mario Andretti and brothers Bobby and Al Unser. Sanctioned by the American Automobile Association, the speedway's popularity exploded, with crowds of 50-thousand to 60-thousand paying 25 cents to 30 cents a ticket. Top drivers barreled around the dirt track as it built a reputation as the world's most demanding. The track closed in 1971 after a 45-year run.

Update on the latest in national sports:

ALCS-FINAL SCORE
Tigers go for mow-down in Motown

DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Tigers are one victory away from their first World Series appearance since 1984. And the clincher could come today in Motown. Kenny Rogers and two relievers combined on a two-hitter as the Tigers grabbed a three-games-to-none lead in the American League Championship Series by blanking the Oakland Athletics 3-to-0 yesterday. After scoring twice in the first inning, the Tigers added a home run by Craig Monroe in the fifth. The Tigers can wrap up the series at home this afternoon. It's matchup of 14-game winners, Danny Haren of Oakland against Jeremy Bonderman of the Tigers.

NLCS-FINAL SCORE
Cardinals flying home all tied up

NEW YORK (AP) - So Taguchi (so tah-GOO'-chee), a late-inning substitute, homered to break a tie as the St. Louis Cardinals scored three runs in the ninth in a 9-to-6 win over the New York Mets. Taguchi connected off Mets closer Billy Wagner. That evens the National League Championship Series at one game apiece. The Cards rallied from a 6-to-4 deficit. Scott Spiezio's (SPEE'-zee-ohz) two-out triple in the seventh tied the game. He had three R-B-I's as a replacement for slumping Scott Rolen at third base. Carlos Delgado has homered twice and drove in four of the Mets' six runs. The teams flew to St. Louis overnight and play Game Three tonight. Steve Trachsel goes for the Mets against Jeff Suppan of the Cards.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Midnight Madness tips off new campaign

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - The Florida Gators are ready to move on after their national championship basketball season. The Gators returned to the court last night for Midnight Madness, tipping off practice for the season. They celebrated their first national title again and try to become the first team to repeat in 15 years. Coach Billy Donovan held a nearly two-hour practice. For the first time Connecticut had both its men's and women's programs -- which have combined for seven national championships since 1995 -- involved in Midnight Madness. Maryland did the same
as the women's Terps are defending national champions.

GOLF-PALMER RETIRES
Golfing legend says he's through competing

SPRING, Texas (AP) - He's one of golf's all-time greats. Arnold Palmer won 62 times on the P-G-A Tour during his storied career. He won four Masters, two British Opens and the U.S. Open. Yesterday in the first round of the Champions Tour event in the Houston suburbs Palmer withdrew from the event and announced he was through with competitive golf. Before a tearful farewell the 77-year-old legend put two shots into the water on the fourth hole. He then announced he was withdrawing because of a sore lower back. Palmer then continued playing at the Augusta Pines course with playing partners Lee Trevino and John Mahaffey but did not keep score the rest of the round. He said he finished the round because he owed it to his fans. Palmer says it's traumatic to him to be unable to play golf at the level at which he's accustomed.

GOLF-PGA TOUR
Taking the Points in Vegas

LAS VEGAS (AP) - D.A. Points is the midway leader at the P-G-A stop in Las Vegas. Points is at 14-under-par after his round of eight-under in his second round. Tom Pernice (pur-NEES') Junior, Aaron Baddeley and Todd Fischer are two shots back.

GOLF-CHAMPIONS TOUR
Three-way tie in Texas

SPRING, Texas (AP) - Tom Purtzer shot a seven-under 65 and is tied with Jay Haas and Dick Maston for the first-round lead in the Champions Tour's stop in Texas.

GOLF-LPGA
Sorenstam tied for top spot

PALM DESERT, Calif. (AP) - Annika Sorenstam shot a one-under 71 and is tied with Sophie Gustafson and Paula Creamer after two rounds of the Samsung World Championship on the L-P-G-A Tour. They're at six-under 138. That's one shot ahead of Women's British Open champion Sherri Steinhauer, who shot a bogey-free 67.
Lorena Ochoa (lohr-AY'-nah oh-CHOH'-uh) and Karrie Webb are two shots off the lead.

NHL-FINAL SCORES
Whitney's late goal saves the 'Canes...Sabres are 4-and-0

UNDATED (AP) - On N-H-L ice, Ray Whitney's tip-in with one-half second left to lift the Carolina Hurricanes past Atlanta, 4-to-3. That's the first win of the season for the defending Stanley Cup champions. Cam Ward stopped 31 shots for the Hurricanes, who were without a win in their first four games. The last-second shot capped a frustrating night for Atlanta goaltender Kari Lehtonen, who gave up three first-period goals and then shut out the Hurricanes until Whitney's game-winner. Craig Adams scored twice for Carolina.

In the rest of the N-H-L:
-- Ales Kotalik's shootout goal gave the undefeated Buffalo Sabres a 3-to-2 win over Detroit. The Sabres are 4-and-0.
-- Jay Bouwmeester scored with nine minutes left to break a tie and the Florida Panthers beat Tampa Bay, 3-to-2. That's the Lightning's third straight loss.
-- San Jose outscored Vancouver, 6-to-4. The Sharks are 4-and-1 on the young season. Markus Naslund scored his 300th goal as a Canuck. That ties Trevor Linden for the franchise record.

NFL-NEWS
Wright to sit out for awhile...Cards keeping Dockett

UNDATED (AP) - The Cincinnati Bengals won't have their regular backup quarterback in uniform for Sunday's outing at Tampa Bay. Anthony Wright's appendix was removed yesterday after he became ill overnight. Doug Johnson, who was signed in the offseason and hasn't appeared in a game since 2004, will be the backup q-b while Wright recovers from the emergency appendectomy.

Elsewhere around the N-F-L:
-- Cardinals defensive tackle Darnell Dockett has inked a five-year contract extension. It's the latest in a series of moves designed to keep the team's top young players in Arizona. The six-foot-four, 290-pound lineman is a third-year pro who could have become a free agent after this season.

AUTO RACING-BUSCH
Harvick clinches title

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) - Dave Blaney wound up the winner at Lowe's Motor Speedway in a NASCAR Busch Series race. Michael Waltrip wound up second, followed by Stacy Compton and Matt Kenseth. Kevin Harvick, who came back from an early tire problem and finished ninth, clinched his second Busch championship with four races left.
