PHOENIX (AP) - Justin Upton homered and drove in three runs and
Chris Snyder added a solo shot as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated
the Philadelphia Phillies 4-0 last night. The Phillies lost for
only the sixth time in 25 games this month and saw their NL East
lead drop to 6 games. They open up a series against the San
Francisco Giants tonight.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Looking for a top starter to bolster their
so-so rotation, the Philadelphia Phillies acquired reigning AL Cy
Young Award winner Cliff Lee from the Indians. The defending World
Series champions are sending Cleveland four minor league prospects
for Lee and outfielder Ben Francisco. The deal is pending medical
reviews.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Randy Winn lined an RBI single down the
first-base line with two outs in the 10th inning and the San
Francisco Giants beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 1-0 yesterday for a
three-game sweep. The Pirates lost their fifth straight to finish a
1-7 road trip. The Pirates are off today and start a weekend series
against the Nationals tomorrow.
SEATTLE (AP) - The Seattle Mariners have acquired shortstop Jack
Wilson and pitcher Ian Snell from the Pittsburgh Pirates for
shortstop Ronny Cedeno, Triple-A catcher Jeff Clement and three
minor league pitchers. Pittsburgh also gets minor league
right-handed pitchers Nathan Adcock, Brett Lorin and Aaron
Pribanic.
BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - New Eagles defensive coordinator Sean
McDermott says he's still looking for a "book of sorcery" that
his mentor Jim Johnson left behind. Johnson died Tuesday at the age
of 68 after a long battle with cancer. McDermott says with the
results Johnson got, there must be a "book of potions and magic"
somewhere around.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Heath Miller has
agreed to a six-year contract that runs through the 2014 season.
Miller, one of the top blockers among NFL tight ends, had one
season remaining on the five-year contract he signed after being
Pittsburgh's first-round draft pick in 2005.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Elton Brand is ready to give the
Philadelphia 76ers what they paid for. The often-injured power
forward believes he can return to form and be the double-double
presence in the post that earned him two All-Star berths and an $80
million contract from the Sixers. He is preparing for training camp
which starts in late September.
