went back to work Wednesday after two days off following a 24-19

to get to this point.

Jermichael Finley and the rest of the Green Bay Packers' injured

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Flyers head into the
All-Star break leading the league in wins after a 5-2 victory over
the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday night. The Flyers' 10-2-0 record
in January has catapulted them to an NHL-best 33 victories. A year
ago, the Flyers clinched a playoff spot in the last game of the
season.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Coach Mike Tomlin still is only 38 years old,
still hasn't played a down of NFL football, and still has only one
year as a coordinator on his resume. But after his Pittsburgh
Steelers secured their second Super Bowl appearance in his four
seasons as coach, he's gained the respect of his players, past and
present.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Pro Football Hall of Famer Paul Hornung
is siding with some old friends in the Super Bowl. The former Green
Bay Packers running back says his old team will beat the Pittsburgh
Steelers by a field goal on February 6. Hornung says the Packers
could be on the verge of a dynasty similar to the one he helped the
team build in the 1960s.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) - Linebacker Nick Barnett and tight end
Jermichael Finley won't play for the Green Bay Packers in the Super
Bowl, and there's something else they won't share with the team.
Both posted complaints on Twitter Tuesday after learning players on
injured reserve will not be in the team photo. Barnett called it
"sad," and Finley said it was "not cool."

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Michael Vick has signed his first
endorsement contract since his release from prison. The Eagles' Pro
Bowl quarterback inked a two-year contract with Unequal
Technologies, a provider of football pads. Vick endorsed many
products during his six seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, but lost
everything following his 2007 arrest on dogfighting charges.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A charter plane carrying the University of
Massachusetts men's basketball team made an emergency landing at

cockpit. They were on their way to Pennsylvania for a game tonight
against St. Bonaventure. The Albany Times-Union reports the plane
landed safely Tuesday.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Barely two years into Cael Sanderson's
tenure as coach, Penn State now has the No. 1 wrestling team in the
country. The Nittany Lions are off to their best start in program
history at 13-0. They claimed the top spot in the USA Today/NWCA
Coaches Poll released Tuesday.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Goalkeeper Brad Knighton has been waived by
Major League Soccer's Philadelphia Union. The 25-year-old made his

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Thaddeus Young scored 24 points, Elton Brand
had 22 points and nine rebounds and the Philadelphia 76ers beat the
Phoenix Suns 105-95 on Monday night. The Sixers won their 14th home
game, two more than last season. Coach Doug Collins and the rest of
the team are openly talking about catching New York for the sixth
seed in the Eastern Conference.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers, with a record six
Super Bowl titles, a 14-4 record and a veteran roster on the verge
of three championships in the past six seasons, are three-point
underdogs by Las Vegas oddsmakers for this year's Super Bowl. For a
team that wasn't picked by many to win its division, being the
underdog is a role the Steelers are embracing.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) - B.J. Raji wasn't one of the Green Bay
Packers' players who wore cowboy hats to a kickoff luncheon, but he
liked his teammates' subtle show of swagger. And with Packers
players now preparing to face the Pittsburgh Steelers, Raji says
the defensive linemen might be planning a motivational gimmick of
their own going into the matchup at Cowboys Stadium.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - A Wisconsin towel maker is smack-dab in the
middle of the Green Bay Packer-Pittsburgh Steeler Super Bowl
matchup. McArthur Towel and Sports has been producing officially
licensed sports towels for years, including the Steeler fans'
beloved Terrible Towel. Now the company is busy creating a Super
Bowl version for both teams.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The words that describe the Pittsburgh
Steelers - proud, tough and resilient - could also apply to their
large, loyal fan base. Older fans speak about passing their
Steelers loyalty to their children, or swaddling newborns in
Terrible Towels. The Steelers are a big mom-and-pop operation,
owned by three generations of the Rooney family.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The retractable roof at $1.3 billion
Cowboys Stadium will be closed for the Super Bowl. NFL spokesman
Brian McCarthy said Monday the decision was made well in advance of
the February 6 game. The weather could be good enough for an
open-air game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay
Packers, but there's also a risk of freezing temperatures.

IMPERIAL, Pa. (AP) - Delta Air Lines is adding nonstop flights
between Pittsburgh International Airport and Dallas/Fort Worth
International Airport for fans who want to attend the Super Bowl.
Delta announced the new flights on Monday, just hours after the
Pittsburgh Steelers advanced to the Super Bowl by beating the New
York Jets Sunday night.

NEW YORK (AP) - The NFL and Fox announced Monday that Christina
Aguilera will sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl in Texas
on February 6. The five-time Grammy award winning singer will be
making an encore at the NFL championship. She was part of the
halftime show during the 2000 Super Bowl.

Ohio State is again the runaway No. 1 in The Associated Press
Top 25 men's college basketball poll, receiving all but two
first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel.
Pittsburgh jumps from fifth to second and Duke moves up one place
to third. Both received one first-place vote Monday. San Diego
State moves from sixth to fourth and Connecticut jumps three spots
to fifth.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ben Hansbrough scored 19 points, Carleton
Scott had 16 and No. 15 Notre Dame upset No. 2 Pittsburgh 56-51 on
Monday night. Scott went 5 for 6 from 3-point range as Notre Dame
earned its first road win of the season. Reserve Scott Martin made
three 3s and finished with 10 points.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Drexel pulled away from cold-shooting
Georgia State for a 57-33 Colonial Athletic Association victory
Monday night. The Panthers, who lost their fifth straight game,
were held to the lowest score in program history, five points fewer
than in a 46-38 loss to Utah on November 17, 2003. They shot just
29.2 percent from the field.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers advanced to their
third Super Bowl in six years thanks to a big-play defense that
returned a fumble for a touchdown and staged a late goal-line stand
in a 24-19 victory over the New York Jets. Pittsburgh, which led
24-0 in the first half and held on, faces the Green Bay Packers in
the Super Bowl in Dallas in two weeks.

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Sports books in Nevada have made Green Bay a
slight favorite in the Super Bowl over Pittsburgh based on the
Packers' popularity among bettors during the past few weeks. The
Glantz-Culver line has made the Packers an early 2 1/2-point favorite
and put the game's total score at 45 1/2 points for the Feb. 6 game in
Arlington, Texas.

Troy Polamalu and the Steel Curtain led Pittsburgh into the big
game for the third time in six years, holding off Rex Ryan and
those big-talkin' Jets 24-19 in the AFC championship game Sunday.
The black-and-gold have won six Super Bowl rings, more than any
franchise, but they'll be going against a team that can hold its
own in the history department.

CHICAGO (AP) - Jeff Carter had two goals and an assist, and
rookie Sergei Bobrovsky made 30 saves in the Philadelphia Flyers'
4-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday. Nikolay Zherdev and
Scott Hartnell added goals, and Claude Giroux had four assists for
the Flyers in the only regular-season rematch of last year's
Stanley Cup Finals.

win over the Patriots last Sunday. He sat out the team's first
practice but passed medical tests.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Flyers center Danny Briere has been added to
the NHL roster for the All-Star game. He'll take the roster spot of
Calgary's Jarome Iginla who withdrew from the game to spend time
with his ailing grandmother. Briere leads the Flyers with 24 goals
and 41 points this season.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Eagles have hired Titans assistant Jim
Washburn to be Philadelphia's defensive line coach. Washburn
replaces Rory Segrest, who was fired last week along with defensive
coordinator Sean McDermott. Washburn had spent 12 seasons in the
same position with the Titans.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Khalif Wyatt came off the bench and scored a
career-high 27 points as Temple downed Penn 73-56 last night.
Ramone Moore scored 12 in the win for the Owls while Lavoy Allen
scored 10 points and had a career-high six blocks. Penn played a
sloppy game, with 23 turnovers.

FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) - Drexel struggled offensively last night,
going down to George Mason 71-47. The Dragons shot just 32 percent
from the field in the loss to drop to 11-6. Chris Fouch led Drexel
with 11 points but also was one of three Dragons to foul out of the
game.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Saint Joseph's saw 25 points from Carl Jones
last night but wasn't able to keep up with Rhode Island, taking a
64-59 loss. Idris Hilliard scored 13 points while C.J. Aiken added
10. The Hawks drop to 5-13 with the loss, which is their fifth
straight.

HAMILTON, N.Y. (AP) - A jumper from Mitch Rolls with 8 seconds
left gave Colgate an 80-79 win over Lehigh last night. C.J.
McCollum scored 24 points for Lehigh but missed a potential
game-winning jumper of his own as time expired. The Mountain Hawks
drop to 10-9 with the loss.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - When 7th-ranked Villanova takes on
number-3 Syracuse Saturday, the crowd could break the NCAA
attendance record that the teams set just a year ago. Syracuse says
more than 33,000 tickets have already been sold for the game in the
Carrier Dome. Last February's game between the Big East rivals drew
34,616 people.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Andrej Meszaros scored 1:07 into overtime to
bail out the Flyers after they blew a third period lead and give
Philadelphia a 3-2 win over the Washington Capitals on Tuesday
night. The Flyers won only hours after they gave general manager
Paul Holmgren a three-year contract extension.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Sidney Crosby-less Penguins beat the
injury-thinned Detroit Red Wings 4-1 on Tuesday night. Pittsburgh
had been without a penalty shot goal since Jarkko Ruutu scored
against Toronto on Jan. 20, 2007. Conner converted at 11:29 of the
first, making it 2-0. Penguins All-Star goalie Marc-Andre Fleury
preserved the lead by making 36 saves.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Penguins center Mark Letestu has
signed a $1.25 million, two-year contract extension that runs
through the 2012-13 season. The deal was announced following the
Penguins' 4-1 victory over the Red Wings on Tuesday night.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is feeling
better despite a concussion that has sidelined him for six games,
but doesn't know when he can resume practicing or playing. Crosby's
status for the All-Star game January 30 in Raleigh, N.C., is
uncertain, although he said Tuesday there is a "slight chance" he
could be back for it.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) - The New York Jets are done with the
New England Patriots. Bring on the Pittsburgh Steelers. Don't
expect a bunch of expletives and trash talk to overshadow the AFC
championship game between the Jets and Steelers. This time, it's
not personal for coach Rex Ryan. Not against Steelers coach Mike
Tomlin.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Right-handed reliever Joel Hanrahan has agreed
to terms on a $1.4 million, one-year contract with the Pittsburgh
Pirates. The sides avoided arbitration with Tuesday's deal.
Hanrahan and right-hander Evan Meek are expected to compete to be
the closer.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies have avoided
arbitration with right-handed pitcher Kyle Kendrick, agreeing to a
$2.45 million, one-year contract. The Phillies announced the deal
on Tuesday. Kendrick's contract includes awards bonuses.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Tight ends coach Tony Dews is the third former
Michigan assistant coach to join new Pittsburgh coach Todd Graham's
staff. Previously, assistant head coach Calvin Magee, also the
co-offensive coordinator, and cornerbacks coach Tony Gibson were
added from former Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez's staff. Gibson
will also be the recruiting coordinator.

BOSTON (AP) - The Bruins beat the Philadelphia Flyers 7-5 on
Thursday night. It was Boston's third straight victory. Boston is
7-1-3 in the last 11 games.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Bill Cowher is back on the Steelers' sideline
for the first time since resigning as their coach four years ago.
Cowher, attending in his role as a CBS analyst, watched the
Steelers' final practice Thursday before their AFC playoff game
against Baltimore. It was his first official visit to their
practice site since he stopped coaching.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Competitively, no NFL rivalry is closer than
the Ravens-Steelers. Each of their last four regular season games
was decided by 3 points - a mere field goal's difference. Last
season, the Ravens won in Baltimore, the Steelers won in
Pittsburgh. This season, the Ravens won in Pittsburgh, the Steelers
won in Baltimore.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) - The Baltimore Ravens are playing their
best defense of the season, just in time for their playoff showdown
with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Heading into Saturday's game,
Baltimore is coming off two straight games in which it allowed only
seven points - including a 30-7 rout of Kansas City last week in
the wild-card round.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - The Buffalo Bills say former University of
Pittsburgh coach Dave Wannstedt has met with the team looking to
return to the NFL. Wannstedt was forced to resign at Pitt last
month. He has an extensive background as a defensive coach, and the
Bills had trouble stopping the run in a 4-12 season. The Bills
would not discuss details of the meeting.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - A year after a disastrous last-place
finish in the Big Ten, Penn State has made waves with back-to-back
upsets of ranked teams Michigan State and Illinois. In
success-starved Happy Valley, that's big news, something the team
hadn't accomplished since the 1954 NCAA tournament. An even tougher
challenge comes Saturday, when the Nittany Lions visit Ohio State.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Joe Paterno says reports of his declining
health are greatly exaggerated. The 84-year-old Penn State coach
Thursday received the NCAA President's Gerald R. Ford Award at the
NCAA's annual convention. Paterno reiterated his plans to coach
next season, the final year of a three-year extension signed in
2008.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Drexel rallied to beat Old Dominion 62-57 on
Thursday night. Old Dominion led by as many as 12 points in the
first half and held a 32-24 lead at the break. Drexel opened the
second half with a 29-5 run to grab its biggest lead of the game at
53-37 after a free throw by Daryl McCoy with 6:09 to play.

MONTREAL (AP) - The Pittsburgh Penguins scored four power-play
goals to end a three-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over the
Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday night. Marc-Andre Fleury made 20
saves for the Penguins, who won without Sidney Crosby in the lineup
for the first time since their captain was sidelined by a
concussion six days ago.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - If the Steelers beat the Ravens on Saturday,
they'll advance to their fifth AFC championship game in 10 seasons
and their eighth since 1994. They'll also be a victory away from
their third Super Bowl in six seasons. Only four franchises -
including Pittsburgh - have won at least three Super Bowls with the
same quarterback and core group of players.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Pittsburgh broke open the game early Wednesday
night and remained unbeaten in the Big East with a 72-57 win over
Georgetown. The slumping Hoyas have lost three straight and are off
to their worst conference start since 1998-99. Georgetown was let
down by poor defense and poor free throw shooting.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Villanova beat Louisville 88-74 Wednesday
night, for its 10th straight win. Coach Jay Wright has said this
season his team isn't as good as its ranking, but it might be there
now. The Wildcats resisted turning the game into a complete 3-point
exhibition when Louisville got hot early and used contributions
from all the starters in a game-changing spurt to pull away.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Temple beat St. Bonaventure 83-55 on
Wednesday night. Temple has won the last 14 games in the series and
all 31 of its home games against the Bonnies. The Owls have won
nine of 10 overall.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ruben Guillandeaux scored 24 points to lead
La Salle to an 89-83 overtime victory over Pennsylvania on
Wednesday night. La Salle leading-scorer Aaric Murray, who sat out
the previous game had 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ta'Shia Phillips had 20 points and 17
rebounds, and No. 8 Xavier overcame a halftime deficit to blow out
St. Joseph's 75-54 on Wednesday afternoon. The Musketeers trailed
34-30 after Katie Kuester hit a 3-pointer late in the first half
then Erin Shields made another early in the second. Phillips' size
and Tyeasha Moss' finesse allowed Xavier to rally.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Organizers of the Pittsburgh Marathon say
they've come up with a new route that crosses all three of the
city's rivers but more importantly provides enough room for two
thousand more runners. The change is one of several being made to
grow the race. The race attracted 16,000 runners last year but the
new route can accommodate 18,000 runners.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - An eye doctor who touts corrective surgery he
performed on Tiger Woods has been ordered to pay a western
Pennsylvania man more than $1 million for a 2001 procedure that
left the patient with blurry or double vision in one eye. On
Monday, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court gave Dr. Mark Whitten five
days to pay the money, plus interest, to David Cantalupo.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - The Philadelphia Flyers overcame a two-goal
deficit to beat the Buffalo Sabres 5-2 on Tuesday night. Ville
Leino scored the go-ahead goal 2:17 into the third period by having
a rebound go in off his skate as the Eastern Conference-leading
Flyers won their fourth straight and 12th of their past 16.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Indiana Pacers snapped a nine-game road
losing streak with a 111-103 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on
Tuesday night. Mike Dunleavy contributed 20 points while Tyler
Hansbrough had 12 points for the Pacers. Jrue Holiday led the
Sixers with 19 points and Elton Brand added 18.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Here's a scary thought for Michael Vick's
opponents: He could play even better next year. Vick had the best
season of his career, leading the Eagles to an NFC East title
without the benefit of practicing as the starting quarterback until
Week 2 of the season. There's no telling how well he would've
played had he spent the entire offseason getting ready.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed six
players to future contracts for the 2011 season, including
linebackers Mortty Ivy and Baraka Atkins. Also signed were running
back James Johnson, guard Kevin McCaskill, fullback-tight end Jamie
McCoy and cornerback Donovan Warren. They cannot practice until
after the 2010 season ends.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Even during one of the most prolific passing
seasons the NFL has seen, 100-yard rushers are commonplace - except
against Pittsburgh. The Steelers didn't give up one to an
individual all season while allowing a scant 1,004 yards in 16
games. Only two teams, the Jets and Patriots, ran for 100 yards
against a defense that permitted 62.8 yards rushing per game.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State's spring semester has
started and quarterbacks Rob Bolden and Kevin Newsome are enrolled
in the school following questions about their futures. A team
spokesman said Tuesday night both players were still with the team.
Bolden's father has said coach Joe Paterno denied his son's request
last week for a transfer.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Todd Graham made it evident that Pitt football
won't be the same as it was last month. Or even last week. Graham,
the former Tulsa coach who becomes Pittsburgh's third head coach in
a month, said Tuesday that Pitt fans would be so excited by their
new offense, they won't want to sit down in Heinz Field seats that
are normally filled only for Steelers games.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Andrew Jones converted an offensive
rebound with 1 second left and Talor Battle scored 26 points to
lead Penn State past Illinois 57-55 on Tuesday night for its second
straight upset of a ranked team. There was good reason to celebrate
- it was the first time Penn State beat ranked foes in consecutive
games since the 1954 NCAA tournament.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The start of Wednesday's women's basketball
game between Saint Joseph's and Xavier has been moved back by one
hour to 1 p.m. because of the storm. Saint Joseph's spokesman Jack
Jumper says the switch is intended to ensure referees, other game
personnel and fans can get to the Philadelphia school without
problems.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Boston beat the Sidney Crosby-less Penguins
4-2 on Monday night. The comeback win, the second victory by Boston
in six games, came after they squandered a 2-0 lead with 2 1/2 minutes
left Saturday and lost 3-2 in overtime to Montreal. Pittsburgh is
0-2-1 without Crosby, who is out with a concussion.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Michael Vick turned a season that began with
low expectations into one filled with highlights and high hopes.
Vick led the Eagles to an NFC East title, but a 21-16 loss to Green
Bay in a wild-card game on Sunday spoiled his remarkable comeback
story. No Super Bowl victory for the Eagles, who haven't won a
championship since 1960.

CLEVELAND (AP) - Philadelphia coach Andy Reid says he has not
received paperwork from Cleveland to interview Eagles offensive
coordinator Marty Mornhinweg for their coaching job. Mornhinweg is
believed to be on Browns president Mike Holmgren's list of
potential replacements for Eric Mangini, fired last week.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Once again, two games in a season weren't
enough for the Ravens and Steelers, division opponents who can't
stand each other. For the second time in three seasons, they'll
meet in the playoffs - their eighth game in the last three seasons
alone. And it will be in Pittsburgh, where the Ravens have never
won in the postseason.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Todd Graham has agreed to leave Tulsa and
become Pitt's third football coach in a month, a move designed to
quickly bring stability to a program rocked by former coach Mike
Haywood's arrest last month. Tulsa's players held an 8 p.m. EST
team meeting Monday at which Graham announced the move. Pitt made
the hiring official shortly after that.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh running back Dion Lewis, wide
receiver Jon Baldwin and fullback Henry Hynoski have declared for
the NFL draft. The departures are a setback for a program that had
a disappointing 8-5 record this season and is about to hire its
third coach in a month, following the ouster of Dave Wannstedt and
the firing of Mike Haywood.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Former AFL star fullback Cookie Gilchrist
has died of cancer at 75. Nephew Thomas Gilchrist says his uncle
died Monday at an assisted living facility near Pittsburgh.
Gilchrist was a 251-pound bruising runner in the 1960s in the
American Football League. He spent six years in the Canadian
Football League before joining the Buffalo Bills of the AFL in
1962.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - In a season full of personal and
professional redemption, Michael Vick's magical tale ended the
first weekend of the playoffs. Vick didn't have enough dazzling
plays to carry the NFC East champion Philadelphia Eagles and was
intercepted in the end zone on the final drive of a 21-16 loss to
Green Bay on Sunday.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Green Bay Packers beat Michael Vick and
the Philadelphia Eagles 21-16 in an NFC wild-card game Sunday. Vick
nearly led the Eagles back, but Tramon Williams intercepted Vick's
pass for Riley Cooper in the end zone with 33 seconds left to seal
the win. The Packers are heading to Atlanta for a divisional
playoff game next Saturday night.

VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) - Villanova beat Cincinnati on Sunday,
handing the Bearcats' their first loss of the season. Villanova
upped its winning streak at The Pavilion, its cozy 6,500-seat
on-campus arena, to 45 straight. The streak began on January 17,
2007, and now includes 19 wins over Big East teams.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ramone Moore scored 15 points and Temple
defeated Saint Louis 57-53 on Sunday. The Owls trailed by as many
as nine, 41-32, with 10:13 left. Temple then went on an 11-2 run to
tie it at 43 on Moore's jump shot with 5:59 to play.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The 9-year-old girl killed by a gunman who
opened fire at an Arizona congresswoman's event is the
granddaughter of former Philadelphia Phillies manager Dallas Green
and the daughter of a Los Angeles Dodgers scout. Christina-Taylor
Green was shot outside a Tucson grocery story when she went to see
Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

UNDATED (AP) - It's wild card weekend with two games opening the NFL playoffs today. The defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints invade Qwest Field to play the 7-9 NFC West champion Seattle Seahawks followed by the Indianapolis Colts hosting the wild-card New York Jets. Our coverage of the NFL playoffs begins at 4pm today.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - DeSean Jackson can score anytime he touches
the ball from anywhere on the field. The problem for the Philadelphia Eagles is they don't have much success when opponents shut Jackson down. The Pro Bowl wide receiver had just 11 catches for 107 yards and no touchdowns in the Birds' four losses. The
Packers are sure to key in on Jackson during tomorrow's wild card playoff opener at the Linc in Philly. You can hear that game tomorrow afternoon around 4:30 on WPPA Sports.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jodie Meeks scored 24 points, Lou Williams had 20, and the 76ers avenged a 45-point loss to Chicago with a 105-99 victory over the Bulls last night. Jrue Holiday added 19 for the 76ers, who lost 121-76 on December 21st in Chicago.

MONTREAL (AP) - Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is expected to be sidelined for a week because of a concussion. Crosby, who leads the NHL with 32 goals and 66 points, missed the Penguins' 2-1 shootout loss in Montreal Thursday night. He was evaluated by team doctors.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Pittsburgh players say they will be playing for Dave Wannstedt even though he will be far away when the Panthers face Kentucky on Saturday in the BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham. Wannstedt resigned December 8th under pressure following a disappointing 7-5 season. Defensive coordinator Phil Bennett is
serving as Pitt's acting head coach. That game can be heard here on WPPA at 11:20 this morning.

STORRS, Conn. (AP) - UConn athletic director Jeff Hathaway is reportedly set to meet with Penn State defensive coordinator Tom Bradley this weekend about the school's vacant head football coach position. Bradley is also a candidate for the same job at Pitt.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The LSU Tigers rallied for a 41-24 victory over No. 18 Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl last night. Head coach Les Miles is likely a leading candidate for the coaching vacancy at Michigan.

RENTON, Wash. - The Seattle Seahawks may be double-digit
underdogs at home against defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans
on Saturday, but at least they are getting their starting
quarterback back on the field. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll says
35-year-old Matt Hasselbeck's hip injury is improving and he gets
the starting nod over backup Charlie Whitehurst for the Seahawks,
who enter the playoffs sporting a 7-9 record.

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - Saying he's committed to earning his
Stanford degree in architectural design by the spring of 2012,
Andrew Luck says he's passing on the NFL draft this year to play
another year of college ball. Many scouts had projected the
Stanford quarterback to be the No. 1 overall pick had he chosen to
go pro.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Alabama has scheduled a news conference
today as a report has surfaced that the Tide's standout defensive
end Marcell Dareus is heading to the NFL. Dareus's legal guardian,
Lester Reasor, told The Birmingham News that Dareus has decided to
skip his senior season and head to the NFL.

KAPALUA, Hawaii (AP) - Jonathan Byrd and Carl Pettersson start
the day tied for the lead at the PGA season-opening Tournament of
Champions at Kapalua on the big island of Hawaii. Two-time
defending champion Geoff Ogilvy (OH'-gihl-vee) withdrew three days
after gouging his right index finger on a coral feer at the beach.

BOSTON (AP) - The Minnesota Wild stayed unbeaten in Boston with
a 3-1 win over the Bruins that gives the Wild a 9-2 overall mark
against the Bruins since Minnesota entered the NHL in 2000.
Boston's loss coupled with Montreal's 2-1 shootout win over
Pittsburgh, trims the Bruins' Northeast Division lead to one point
over the Canadiens, although the Bruins have two games in hand.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Goaltender Michael Leighton cleared waivers
on Tuesday, and was sent to the Philadelphia Flyers' AHL affiliate.
The Flyers, tied for first place in the Atlantic Division with
Pittsburgh, will take on the New Jersey Devils in Newark on
Thursday.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - After three months of hype and buildup for the
Winter Classic, the Pittsburgh Penguins are focusing again on
playing games that count just as much as the outdoor game 3-1 loss
to the Capitals. Even if those games will lack the drama and the
distractions that accompanied playing in what was the NHL's
most-watched regular-season game in 35 years.

NEW YORK (AP) - Sidney Crosby is the top vote-getter for the NHL
All-Star Game. The NHL also announced Tuesday leading vote-getters
Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang and Marc-Andre Fleury of the Pittsburgh
Penguins and Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith of the Chicago
Blackhawks. The rest of the 42 All-Stars will be revealed on
January 11.

CLEVELAND (AP) - The Cleveland Indians have acquired reliever
Joe Martinez from the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash considerations.
The 27-year-old right-hander split time last season between
Triple-A and the majors for both Pittsburgh and San Francisco. He
went a combined 0-1 with a 4.12 ERA in nine games.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State's season is about to get
much more difficult. Over the next two weeks, the Nittany Lions
must play five games against Big Ten foes all ranked in the Top 25.
The stretch begins Wednesday when No. 11 Purdue (13-1, 2-0) visits
Happy Valley. The five-game run could go a long way toward helping
- or hurting - the school's postseason resume.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State quarterback Rob Bolden's
father says coach Joe Paterno has denied his son's request to
transfer. Robert Bolden, Sr., said he wasn't expecting Paterno to
turn down the quarterback after a meeting Tuesday in State College.
It's unclear what Bolden will do next, with spring semester classes
starting Monday.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Gary McGhee scored all of his 13 points
in the second half, grabbing a key rebound and making two free
throws with 18 seconds left to help No. 5 Pittsburgh hold off
feisty Providence 83-79 on Tuesday night. It was Pitt's first trip
to Providence since losing here as the No. 1 team in the country in
2009.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Michael Ojo scored a career-high 33 points
to lead Lehigh over New Jersey Institute of Technology 92-83 on
Tuesday night. Ojo, who also reached 500-career points, scored 14
in the first eight minutes and 20 in the first half as the Mountain
Hawks (9-6) led 43-33 at halftime.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The New Orleans Hornets held on for their
third straight victory, 84-77 over the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday
night. Brand led Philadelphia with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while
Andres Nocioni had 13 points and Jrue Holiday and Marreese Speights
each had 12 points.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Hofstra beat Drexel 75-69 Monday night.
Samme Givens had 25 points and eight rebounds to lead the Dragons,
who had won seven of their previous eight games. Hofstra took the
lead on two free throws by Shemiye McLendon.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky shot its way past Penn 86-62 on
Monday night. Josh Harrellson added 12 points and 11 rebounds and
Darius Miller had 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists as the
Wildcats used some scorching second-half shooting to subdue the
Quakers. Penn led by as much as 12 early but had no answer when the
Wildcats awoke following a sleepy opening 15 minutes.

NEW YORK (AP) - The Winter Classic's television ratings were up
from last year even though it was postponed because of rain. The
Washington Capitals' 3-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins outdoors
on New Year's Day earned a 2.3 rating and 4 share on NBC. That's a
10 percent increase from last year's overtime game between the
Philadelphia Flyers and Boston Bruins.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed defenseman
Deryk Engelland to a $1.7 million, three-year contract that runs
through the 2013-14 season. The deal will count $566,700 per season
against the NHL salary cap.
