NEW YORK (AP) - Sidney Crosby extended his point streak to 13
games and the Penguins won their seventh straight by beating the
Rangers 3-1 last night. Maxime Talbot scored in the first period,
and goals by Kris Letang and Chris Conner in the second stretched
Pittsburgh's lead to 3-0. The Penguins haven't lost since falling
to the Rangers at home in overtime on November 15th.

NEW YORK (AP) - Sidney Crosby leads all players in balloting for
the NHL All-Star game for the second consecutive week. The
Pittsburgh Penguins' star had nearly 219,000 votes in results
released yesterday by the league. Montreal Canadiens goalie Carey
Price moved into second place with nearly 146,000 votes.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The NFL has rejected Steelers linebacker James
Harrison's appeals of his $75,000 fine for a hit on Browns wide
receiver Mohamed Massaquoi, and $20,000 fine for slamming
helmet-first into Saints quarterback Drew Brees' back. Harrison
faces another possible fine for his roughing-the-passer penalty
Sunday against Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Less than 20 hours after a tough loss, the
Philadelphia Eagles were back on the field yesterday. They have no
time to rest this week. The Eagles play host to the Houston Texans
on Thursday night, so they had to recover quickly and get back to
work following a 31-26 loss at Chicago.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pirates third baseman Andy LaRoche and
infielder Delwyn Young have become free agents after clearing
waivers. The Pirates removed both players from their 40-man roster
when they were designated for assignment on November 19th.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt is declining to
speculate about his future at the school, saying he's focused on
Saturday's regular season-ending game at Cincinnati and not on the
Panthers' disappointing season. Pitt was a near-unanimous pick to
win the Big East Conference in a preseason media poll. But the
Panthers must beat Cincinnati to assure themselves of a bowl bid.

Pitt has moved up a spot to Number 3 in the AP men's college
basketball poll. Meanwhile, Villanova has dropped from seventh to
12th following last week's loss to Tennessee. Temple has fallen out
of the Top 25 after dropping two games last week.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pitt hopes to play one non-conference men's
basketball game per season at the new Consol Energy Center, in
addition to the annual City Game against Duquesne. Pitt coach Jamie
Dixon said scheduling such games can be difficult, but the Panthers
anticipate playing twice annually at the downtown arena. There are
no plans to play any Big East Conference games there.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pitt basketball coach Jamie Dixon lobbied for
alma mater TCU to join the Big East Conference during a September
meeting with athletic director Chris Del Conte that may have
accelerated the school's interest in the conference. TCU's board of
trustees unanimously approved an invitation Monday to join the Big
East in football and all other sports.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Washington's Nick Young hit an open 3-pointer
with 7.6 seconds left in overtime, and the Wizards capitalized on
Jrue Holiday's unwise foul in the final seconds of regulation to
beat the 76ers 116-114 last night. Young's winning shot wouldn't
have been possible if Holiday hadn't fouled John Wall some 40 feet
from the basket with 3.5 seconds left and the 76ers leading by
three.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ashton Gibbs scored 20 points and Number 5
Pittsburgh pulled away from smaller Robert Morris after leading by
five points with 11 minutes remaining, winning 74-53 last night.
Brad Wanamaker scored 17 points and Gary McGhee had 11 points and
12 rebounds for the Panthers, who are 29-0 against their suburban
Pittsburgh rival.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is refusing to
criticize the NFL for not suspending Oakland defensive end Richard
Seymour or the club-record 163 yards in penalties assessed his team
during a 35-3 rout of the Raiders on Sunday. Tomlin says he wants
his players focusing only on what they can control, and that begins
with their preparation for Sunday's game at Buffalo.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers defensive end Brett Keisel is
expected to play at Buffalo after missing all but a few plays of
the last five games with a sore hamstring. Rookie wide receiver
Antonio Brown will be limited in practice and might not play
Sunday. Tight end Matt Spaeth's status is uncertain because of a
concussion he sustained Sunday against Oakland.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies say that they will offer
arbitration to free-agent outfielder Jayson Werth. They won't do
the same for free-agent reliever Chad Durbin. Werth will be among
the marquee names in this year's free-agent market. He's been a key
cog in the franchise's run of four straight National League East
division titles.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Flyers have signed minor league forward
Michael Ryan to a one-year contract. General manager Paul Holmgren
says Ryan has been assigned to the team's American Hockey League
affiliate, the Adirondack Phantoms. The 6-1, 188-pound left wing
attended training camp with the Flyers this year on a tryout basis.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Joe Paterno says he plans to return as
Penn State coach next season, putting an end to any speculation
about retirement. JoePa said his team has struggled at times this
year because of youth and injuries, but that the Nittany Lions have
a chance to be good next year and that he's looking forward to
being part of it.

OXFORD, Ohio (AP) - Thomas Merriweather scored on a 96-yard
touchdown run in the fourth quarter as Miami of Ohio blew out
Temple 23-3 last night in Mid-American Conference action. The
RedHawks clinched a share of the Eastern Division title with the
victory.

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Chris Conner scored his first goal of the
season with 7:04 remaining in the third period to lift the Penguins
to a 3-2 victory over the Florida Panthers last night. Kris Letang
and Sidney Crosby had power-play goals for the Penguins, who came
into the game ranked 25th in the league with the man advantage.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - James van Riemsdyk snapped a third-period
tie with his first goal of the season and the Flyers rallied to
beat the Canadiens 3-2 last night. Claude Giroux and Ville Leino
also scored for the Flyers, who trailed 2-0 after the first period.
Philadelphia has won consecutive games after dropping the previous
two.

NEW YORK (AP) - Oakland Raiders defensive lineman Richard
Seymour has been fined $25,000 for striking Pittsburgh quarterback
Ben Roethlisberger in the helmet. Seymour is being fined for
unnecessary roughness in the second quarter of the Steelers' 35-3
victory on Sunday.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Eagles cornerback Ellis Hobbs, who was down
on the field for 11 minutes during Sunday night's 27-17 win over
the Giants, suffered a disc injury in his neck, an MRI revealed
yesterday, and will be out at least one week. Hobbs was injured
during the kickoff return to open the second half, when he was
involved in a helmet-to-helmet collision with Giants defensive
lineman Dave Tollefson.

CHICAGO (AP) - Stopping Eagles quarterback Michael Vick may be
the best way for the Chicago Bears to get people to believe they
are for real. Beating Minnesota, Detroit, Dallas, Buffalo and
Carolina helped supply the Bears with a winning record, but not an
impressive resume.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (AP) - Jeff Brooks scored 21 points and
Taran Buie added 14 as Penn State used a hot start in the second
half to pull away from Central Connecticut State 77-61 on Monday
night. Brooks was a perfect 7 of 7 from the field and 6 of 6 from
the foul line.

HARRISONBURG, Va. (AP) - Darryl Shazier scored 16 points and
Bucknell routed Presbyterian 71-47 in the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBC
Classic last night. The Bison led 40-20 at halftime after shooting
15 of 29 from the floor, including 8 of 15 from 3-point range in
the first half.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - Villanova has won the women's team
title at the NCAA championships in Indiana. Villanova's Sheila Reid
overtook Oregon sophomore Jordan Hasay to win the 6,000-meter race
in 20 minutes, 6.9 seconds. Villanova won the women's competition
with 120 points, followed by Florida State and Texas Tech.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - LeSean McCoy ran 50 yards for the go-ahead
score on a fourth-and-1 late in the fourth quarter, and the
Philadelphia Eagles rallied to beat the New York Giants 27-17 last
night. Michael Vick led the Eagles to a comeback and helped give
them sole possession of first place in the NFC East.

night. He gave the thumbs up with both hands as he was carted off.

finished with three TD passes and also ran for another score.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Raiders defensive end Richard Seymour was
ejected from last night's game for an openhanded punch to Ben
Roethlisberger's face as the Steelers quarterback was celebrating a

He was fined $10,000 for that infraction.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Flyers have acquired

NEW YORK (AP) - Freshman Talib Zanna had 14 points and 12
rebounds to lead Number 5 Pittsburgh to a 79-70 victory over
Maryland on Thursday night in the semifinals of the 2K Sports
Classic. The 6-foot-9 Zanna, who averaged 8.3 points and 8.0
rebounds in his first three games, led the Panthers.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jerrell Williams tied his career high with
21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as La Salle defeated Prairie View
A&M 88-74 last night in their Cancun Challenge opener. The

in the first meeting between the schools.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says Michael
Vick is doing all the right things and he's proud of the way the

serving time in prison for his role in a dogfighting ring. Goodell
tells the New York Daily News that Vick is doing a terrific job on
and off the field.

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) - Bruce Gradkowski is finally fully healed
from a separated throwing shoulder just in time for the Oakland
Raiders to make another trip to his hometown of Pittsburgh - the
site of his greatest NFL victory. Gradkowski started the season for

hometown Steelers backing up Jason Campbell.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State's Joe Paterno has been

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles are going even
greener. The team will add wind turbines, solar panels and a
co-generation plant at Lincoln Financial Field over the next year.
Team officials say the combination of energy sources will make the
stadium self-sufficient and even allow the Eagles to sell some of
its power back to the electric grid.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Sidney Crosby scored on a breakaway seven
seconds after leaving the penalty box, Max Talbot scored
short-handed and the Penguins beat Vancouver in regulation for the
first time in 10 years, winning 3-1 last night. The Penguins won
for only the fourth time in their first 10 games in the new Consol
Energy Center.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The 76ers' losing streak now stands at five
following last night's 94-86 loss to Toronto in a matchup of two of
the worst teams in the Eastern Conference. Elton Brand led the
Sixers with 27 points, Jrue Holiday added 17, and rookie Evan
Turner had his second double-double with 11 points and a
career-best 12 rebounds.

VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) - Antonio Pena scored 17 points and Corey
Fisher had 16 to lead Number 6 Villanova to an 82-66 victory over
Boston University in the second round of the NIT Season Tip-Off
last night. The Wildcats won their 40th straight game at The
Pavilion, and advanced to the semifinals of the tournament
Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden in New York.

NEW YORK (AP) - George Beamon scored 21 points and Manhattan
scored the final 17 points of the game to defeat Pennsylvania 59-54
on Wednesday night. Manhattan trailed 54-42 with 7:48 remaining in
the game before outscoring the Quakers 17-0 behind Beamon, who
scored nine points in the run.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward cleared his
post-concussion tests and practiced in full pads with the team
yesterday. Ward's streak of catching a pass in 186 consecutive
games ended when he sustained a concussion during a 39-26 loss to
New England on Sunday, forcing him to sit out the final three
quarters.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Shaun Suisham knows there's only one way to
win over a Steelers locker room that isn't happy about the release
of longtime kicker Jeff Reed. Don't miss any field goal attempts.
Suisham's resume isn't nearly as extensive as Reed's, and he missed
important kicks last season for Washington and Dallas. But he's
confident he can get the job done as Pittsburgh's kicker.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State punter Anthony Fera is out
indefinitely after having an appendectomy yesterday. A team
spokesman said it was unknown when the redshirt freshman could
return to practice. Freshman Alex Butterworth is the backup on the
depth chart for Saturday's game against Indiana in Landover,
Maryland.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia officials say they are teaming
up with the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation on a $13 million
effort to improve five public skating rinks in the city. Mayor
Michael Nutter says three rinks will undergo renovations and
enclosure for year-round operations, and the other two will also
have significant work by this time next year.

MONTREAL (AP) - The Flyers have lost for the first time in 11
games following last night's 3-0 setback to the Canadiens last
night. Sergei Bobrovsky made 25 saves for Philadelphia, which lost
in regulation for the first time in three weeks. The Flyers had
gone 9-0-1 since a 2-1 loss in Columbus on October 25th.

CLEVELAND (AP) - The 76ers lost 101-93 last night to Cleveland.
It was Philadelphia's fourth setback in a row. They played without
swingman Andre Iguodala. Thaddeus Young scored 17 and rookie Evan
Turner 16 to pace the Sixers. Iguodala sat out with a troublesome
Achilles' tendon.

NEW YORK (AP) - Roy Halladay of the Philadelphia Phillies has
unanimously won the NL Cy Young Award, making him the fifth pitcher
to earn the honor in both leagues. Halladay pitched a perfect game
in May and then threw a no-hitter in the playoffs. In his first
season with the Phillies, he led the NL with 21 wins and topped the
majors in innings, shutouts and complete games.

NEW YORK (AP) - The NFL is looking into Eagles center Mike
McGlynn's accusation that Redskins safety LaRon Landry spit at him.
After Philadelphia's 59-28 victory at Washington on Monday night,
McGlynn said Landry spit at him twice during extra points.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Steelers have cut Jeff Reed, who began the
season as one of the 10 most accurate kickers in NFL history but
has been erratic all season. Reed will be replaced by former
Redskins and Cowboys kicker Shaun Suisham. He was worked out by the
Steelers on yesterday at Heinz Field, where Reed missed a 26-yarder
against the Patriots on Sunday.

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) - Former NBA All-Star Allen Iverson has
scored 15 points in his debut for Besiktas Cola Turka but failed to
carry his team to victory against Hemofarm Stada. Hemofarm Stada
defeated Besiktas 94-91 in a European Cup game on Tuesday in
Istanbul. Turkish fans shouted "Allen Iverson, the son of Besiktas
Cola Turka" during the match.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State is sticking with Matt
McGloin at quarterback for Saturday's game against Indiana. McGloin
had two interceptions returned for touchdowns in the second half of
last week's 24-point loss at Number 8 Ohio State, but coach Joe
Paterno says he played well overall, especially for a redshirt
sophomore.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Vince Davidson rushed for two touchdowns and
Ohio fended off a late charge to beat Temple 31-23 last night for
its seventh straight win. The Bobcats moved one step closer to the
league's Eastern Division Championship.

VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) - Maalik Wayns scored 17 points and Dominic
Cheek had 15 to lead Number 6 Villanova to an 84-47 victory over
Marist last night in the NIT Season Tip-Off. Villanova had an easy
time against the overmatched Red Foxes, who were 1-29 last season.
The Wildcats have won 39 straight games at The Pavilion.

KENT, Ohio (AP) - Kent State got off to a slow start before
rallying for a 62-59 win over Robert Morris in an early game for
ESPN's Tip-Off marathon. Justin Greene led Kent State with 20
points, helping the Golden Flashes erase a 12-point halftime
deficit. He added 12 rebounds for his second double-double of the
season.

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) - Michael Vick and the Eagles embarrassed the
Washington Redskins, spoiling Donovan McNabb's big contract day
with a 59-28 victory last night. Vick completed his first 10 passes
and finished 20 for 28 for 333 yards with four touchdowns. He also
ran eight times for 80 yards and two scores. The win moved
Philadelphia into a first-place tie with the Giants in the NFC
East.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Rangers' Ryan Callahan scored 3:38 into
overtime and the Rangers beat the Penguins 3-2 with 2 goals in the

games.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Clint Hurdle has been hired as the Pittsburgh
Pirates' manager, saying he's not intimidated by the franchise's
record 18 consecutive losing seasons. Hurdle replaces John Russell,
who was fired the day after completing a 105-loss season - the
Pirates' worst in 58 years. Hurdle had been the hitting coach for
the AL champion Texas Rangers.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies have re-signed right-hander
Jose Contreras to a $5.5 million, two-year contract with a club
option for 2013. The 38-year-old Contreras was a key member in the
bullpen for the four-time NL East champion Phillies in his first
season as a full-time reliever.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg is returning to
the Phillies organization to manage their Triple-A affiliate, the
Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Sandberg spent the last four seasons as a
manager in the Chicago Cubs' minor league system. Sandberg was a
10-time All-Star and won nine Gold Gloves during his 16-year career
with the Cubs and Phillies.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pitt defensive end Greg Romeus will miss the
rest of his senior season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in
his right knee, the second major injury he has had this season.
Romeus was hurt while rushing the quarterback during Pitt's 30-28
loss to Connecticut on Thursday.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The West Virginia-Pitt game will start at noon
on Friday, November 26th and will be televised by ABC. The kickoff

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Jeff Carter had his second career hat
trick, scoring three goals to lead the Philadelphia Flyers past the
Carolina Hurricanes, 8-1 last night. Danny Briere scored two goals,
Scott Hartnell had a goal and an assist, and Nikolay Zherdev and
Mike Richards also scored for the Atlantic Division-leading Flyers.

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Jordan Todman ran for 222 yards,
including 4 on a key fourth-down conversion, and Connecticut beat
Pittsburgh 30-28 to bring the Panthers back to the pack in the Big
East. Pittsburgh had a two-game lead in conference coming in, and
was looking to become the first Big East team to become bowl
eligible.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Free safety Nate Allen and right guard Max
Jean-Gilles didn't practice yesterday, and might not play when the
Philadelphia Eagles visit Washington Monday night. Allen has a neck
strain and Kurt Coleman would replace him. Jean-Gilles has a
concussion. Nick Cole would take his spot.

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) - Redskins running back Clinton Portis talked
about the possibility of playing against the Eagles - while wearing
a Phillies baseball cap. Portis says he's not sure yet whether
he'll make his return Monday night from a groin injury. As for the
Phillies cap, Portis says he "just felt like wearing red."

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies have hired Juan Samuel to be
their third-base coach. Samuel, who was Baltimore's interim manager
for 51 games this season, was a three-time All-Star with the
Phillies in the 1980s. He replaces first-base coach Davey Lopes.
Sam Perlozzo will shift from third to first.

NEW YORK (AP) - The NBA has fined Philadelphia 76ers forward
Andres Nocioni for throwing his mouthpiece into the stands. NBA
executive vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson
announced the $25,000 fine yesterday. The incident happened during
the first quarter of Philadelphia's 109-103 loss at Oklahoma City
on Wednesday night.

VILLANOVA (AP) - Villanova freshman forward JayVaughn Pinkston
has been charged with two counts of simple assault and harassment
and will be held out of games until the university's review is
completed. Pinkston was charged by Upper Merion Township Police
yesterday. Pinkston was involved in a weekend altercation. He will
be allowed to practice for the sixth-ranked Wildcats.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - Former International Olympic
Committee vice president Dick Pound will chair a commission
appointed by USA Swimming to review the findings in the death last
month of open water swimmer and suburban Philadelphia native Fran
Crippen. USA Swimming launched an independent probe into Crippen's
October 23rd death at a race in the United Arab Emirates.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - The Thunder's Kevin Durant and Russell
Westbrook each scored 31 points and came up with the key baskets
down the stretch to help Oklahoma City hold off a late charge from
the 76ers for a 109-103 victory last night. The Sixers got 17
points apiece from Jodie Meeks, Jrue Holiday and Elton Brand.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Boston used five third-period goals to rally
past the Penguins 7-4 last night. Tim Thomas made a season-high 42
saves to improve to 8-0-0 for the Bruins. Sidney Crosby had a goal
and two assists for the Penguins, who have lost six of their past
eight and fell to 2-5 at the new Consol Energy Center.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ashton Gibbs scored 24 points, Brad Wanamaker
added 17 and Number 5 Pittsburgh opened an 18-point lead midway
through the first half while cruising to its second victory in
three nights, a 97-54 decision over Illinois-Chicago last night.
The Panthers didn't need long to take control in the 2K Sports
Classic game against the Flames.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers left tackle Max Starks
needs surgery to repair a disc injury in his neck and will miss the
rest of the season. The injury leaves the Steelers without both of
their projected starting offensive tackles. Right tackle Willie
Colon is out for the season after injuring an Achilles' tendon in
June.

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) - Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan says
Donovan McNabb is doing better but is "by no means full speed
yet" because of sore hamstrings. McNabb stayed after practice for
extra work Wednesday as he prepares for Monday night's game against
Philadelphia. It will be his first game since he was benched in the
final minutes of a loss to Detroit.

STORRS, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut and its starting quarterback
have had a lot in common this season. Both came into the year with
high expectations, disappointed fans early and were perhaps
prematurely written off. Senior Zach Frazer is back at the top of
the depth chart as the Huskies host conference leader Pittsburgh on
Thursday night.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Temple has undergone a basketball rebirth
under coach Fran Dunphy. The Owls have won three straight Atlantic
10 tournament championships. This season, the Owls are ranked in
the AP's preseason poll for the first time since the 2001-02 season
and are picked to win the A-10 in the preseason poll. Number 22
Temple opens up tomorrow against Seton Hall.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State's latest basketball
recruiting class stocks up on frontcourt players with the team
losing its starting frontline after this season. The team says it's
received letters of intent for the 2011-12 season from a pair of
6-foot-11 players in Patrick Ackerman, of Rutland, Massachusetts,
and Peter Alexis of Wilkes-Barre.

CINCINNATI (AP) - Steelers safety Troy Polamalu is renewing his
call to let NFL players help decide fines for flagrant hits.
Polamalu called for a "more democratic" system during last night
on "The T.Ocho Show," which features Bengals receivers Terrell
Owens and Chad Ochocinco on Versus.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers safety Will Allen and running backs
Mewelde Moore and Isaac Redman sustained concussions during Monday
night's game in Cincinnati and must pass tests before being cleared
to play. The Steelers had numerous injuries during their 27-21
victory, with left guard Chris Kemoeatu's sprained knee apparently
the most serious.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Matt McGloin is taking over as Penn
State's starting quarterback against Number 8 Ohio State. The
former walk-on has thrown for seven touchdowns the last three
games, including four last week in relief of freshman Rob Bolden
against Northwestern. Coach Joe Paterno says Bolden may still play
Saturday, though McGloin is the first-stringer.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Talor Battle's final season at Penn
State begins with heady expectations. The Nittany Lions'
lightning-quick guard is 613 points from becoming the school's
career scoring leader, but he's got an even more important goal on
his mind. Penn State is trying to regain respectability in the
tough Big Ten after an 11-20 record and last-place conference
finish last season.

CHESTER, Pa. (AP) - The USA 7's Collegiate Rugby Championship
will be held in June next year at Chester's PPL Park. The
championship, a Rugby Sevens World Cup-style tournament featuring
16 top-tier collegiate rugby teams, will be broadcast live on NBC
both days. Rugby Sevens will be an Olympic sport starting in 2016.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Spectrum is set for one last shot. The
famed arena in South Philadelphia will face the wrecking ball at
noon on November 23rd. Former Philadelphia Flyers Bernie Parent and
Bobby Clarke, and 76ers Hall of Famer Julius "Dr. J" Erving all
won championships playing games at the Spectrum and will be on hand
for its final event.

CINCINNATI (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers keep pace with
Baltimore atop the AFC North -- holding off the Bengals last night
in Cincinnati, 27-21. Antwaan Randle El threw a 39-yard pass for a
touchdown off a trick play. But in the end, it was the defense that
won the game, with two Steelers defenders stripping the ball from
receiver Jordan Shipley on the Bengals' final play.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Flyers and Claude Giroux have agreed on
a multiyear contract extension, with the forward due to have become
a restricted free agent next July. Terms of the deal were not
disclosed. Giroux has played for the Flyers over parts of four
seasons and has seven goals and 14 points so far this season.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Flyers have canned Greg Gilbert, the
coach of their AHL affiliate, after the Adirondack Phantoms started
the season 2-10-1. Taking over as coach for now is assistant GM
John Paddock, who had led the Phantoms to a 43-30-2-5 record and a
spot in the Calder Cup playoffs two seasons ago.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Number 5 Pittsburgh got a scare from Rhode
Island but was able to wear down the Rams and get an 83-75 win to
open the college basketball season last night. The Panthers saw 24
points from Brad Wanamaker, while Ashton Gibbs scored 22. The Rams
kept it close by draining 14 3-pointers.

NEW YORK (AP) - The NFL has decided it won't change the start
time for the Eagles' November 21st matchup against the New York
Giants. The game will stay on Sunday night. The league could have
moved another game into that slot under its flexible scheduling
policy but has opted to leave the schedule as is.

NEW YORK (AP) - There will be no fines or suspensions for Eagles
safeties Quintin Mikell or Kurt Coleman for Sunday's hit that gave
Indianapolis receiver Austin Collie a concussion. Coleman was
penalized for unnecessary roughness after the hit. The league says
the helmet-to-helmet contact was a result of Collie's being driven
toward Coleman by Mikell's legal hit.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - After setting a home attendance record this
season, the Phillies will be raising ticket prices for most seats
at Citizens Bank Park for next year. The team says prices will rise
from $2 to $5 for most areas of the park. The Phillies sold out
every game at home this year.

SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) - Lackawanna County officials have a buyer
for the area's Triple-A baseball team in a deal that includes a $40
million overhaul of the stadium. The Times-Tribune reports the
county and the stadium authority have laid out the framework of a
deal with SWB Yankees to buy the franchise for $14.6 million.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Michael Vick threw for 218 yards and one
touchdown, ran for 74 yards and a score, and the Eagles beat Peyton
Manning and the Indianapolis Colts 26-24 yesterday. The Eagles are
12-0 after a bye since Andy Reid became coach in 1999. They hadn't
beaten Manning in three previous tries.

CINCINNATI (AP) - The Steelers are in Cincinnati to take on the
Bengals in a Monday Night Football matchup. The Steelers want to
get their offense up to speed behind Ben Roethlisberger, who was
suspended by the NFL for the first four games and has been
inconsistent in his return. He usually does well in his home state,
going 11-2 in Ohio.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Washington's Mike Green scored a power-play
goal 29 seconds into overtime to give the Capitals a 3-2 win
against the Flyers yesterday. Nikolay Zherdev and Ville Leino

snapped. The Flyers haven't won seven in a row since January 2002.

NEW YORK (AP) - Philadelphia's Elton Brand scored 20 points, Lou
Williams and Jrue Holiday each had 19, and the 76ers beat the New
York Knicks 106-96 yesterday. Evan Turner, the Number 2 pick and
last season's college player of the year, added 14 points and 10
rebounds in his first NBA start as the 76ers snapped the Knicks'
two-game winning streak.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State's past, present and future
blended together for coach Joe Paterno's 400th win Saturday. Penn
State rallied from 21 points down to beat Northwestern 35-21.

while freshman running back Silas Redd had 131 yards rushing. The
Nittany Lions take on Number 8 Ohio State Saturday.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Talor Battle scored 16 points and had
four rebounds to lead Penn State to a 66-52 exhibition win Sunday
over East Stroudsburg. Tim Frazier and Billy Oliver both added 10
points for Penn State. The Nittany Lions trailed 26-25 at halftime
and didn't gain a double-digit lead against their Division II
opponent until late in the game.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Flyers have won five straight after
former Rangers Blair Betts and Nikolay Zherdev scored to help
Philadelphia to a 4-1 victory over New York last night in the
teams' first meeting since an emotional final day of the 2009-10
regular season. Mike Richards and Chris Pronger added power-play
goal for Philadelphia.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers linebacker James Harrison has been
fined $20,000 for a late hit on Saints quarterback Drew Brees.
Harrison has now been fined three times by the NFL this season for
a total of $100,000. The hit on Brees came in Sunday's loss to the
New Orleans Saints.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Eagles linebacker Ernie Sims on Thursday
called his $50,000 fine by the NFL "outrageous," and said he
planned to appeal. Sims was docked Wednesday for a hit on Tennessee
wide receiver Lavelle Hawkins in the second quarter of the Eagles'
37-19 loss to the Titans on October 24th.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson is
wearing a new helmet, made by Schutt, that is designed to prevent
concussions. Jackson suffered his second concussion in as many
seasons when he took a vicious hit from Atlanta Falcons cornerback
Dunta Robinson on October 17th. Robinson was fined $50,000 for
delivering the blow.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Texas Rangers hitting coach Clint Hurdle has
interviewed for the Pittsburgh Pirates' manager's job. Hurdle
talked yesterday to the Pirates, who hadn't interviewed a candidate
since speaking with Braves bench coach Carlos Tosca on October
14th. Only the Mets and Pirates remain without a manager.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Brad Wanamaker, Travon Woodall and Lamar
Patterson all scored 13 points and Number 5 Pittsburgh defeated
Indiana University of Pennsylvania 73-56 in an exhibition game last
night. Gary McGhee had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Pitt, which
held a 39-32 rebounding edge. The Panthers open Monday night
against Rhode Island in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.

INVERCARGILL, New Zealand (AP) - Disgraced cyclist and
Pennsylvania native Floyd Landis finished eighth today in the
seventh stage of New Zealand's Tour of Southland to remain fourth

DALLAS (AP) - The Stars' Loui Eriksson scored twice, Kari
Lehtonen made 21 saves, and Dallas earned a fight-filled 5-2
victory over Sidney Crosby and the Penguins last night. Tyler
Kennedy and Matt Cooke scored for the Penguins, who opened a
stretch of three games in four nights against Western Conference
opponents.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia's Elton Brand had 25 points and
12 rebounds, and Thaddeus Young scored 16 points to help the 76ers
to their first victory of the season, 101-75 over the Pacers last
night. Sixers coach Doug Collins wasn't around to celebrate his
first win since he was hired in May. Collins left the bench at
halftime because of symptoms related to vertigo.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Last night's 76ers game was a bit of a
homecoming for Pacers coach Jim O'Brien. The Philadelphia native
coached the Sixers during the 2004-05 season and took them to the
playoffs. He says he knew in January of that year he would only
last the season because of disagreements with management.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers linebacker James Harrison has met
with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to discuss the league's
stricter policy on dangerous hits. Harrison had briefly threatened
to retire after he was fined $75,000 by the league for his hit on
Browns wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi on October 17th.

NEW YORK (AP) - Eagles linebacker Ernie Sims has been fined
$50,000 for striking a defenseless receiver in the Eagles game with
the Titans on October 24th. It's the first large fine handed out by
the NFL since it sent a video to the 32 teams emphasizing what hits
would bring big fines and possible suspensions.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Pro Bowl wide receiver DeSean Jackson has
passed post-concussion testing and could play for the Philadelphia
Eagles against Indianapolis on Sunday. Eagles coach Andy Reid says
Jackson is back practicing for the first time since sustaining a
concussion in a nasty head-on collision with Atlanta cornerback
Dunta Robinson on October 17th.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pirates left-hander Wil Ledezma has bypassed
arbitration by agreeing to a one-year contract. The Pirates also
activated opening day first baseman Jeff Clement from the 60-day
disabled list snd assigned him outright to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Right-handers Sean Gallagher and Steven Jackson, left-hander Justin
Thomas and outfielder Brandon Moss are also going to Indy.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Cael Sanderson has big dreams entering
his second season as Penn State's head wrestling coach. Even with a
projected early season lineup that could include as many as eight
first-time or freshman starters, the Nittany Lions are considered
one of the best teams in the country. Penn State says season ticket
sales are on a record pace.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Led by 29 points from rookie and top draft
pick John Wall, the Washington Wizards downed the Philadelphia
76ers last night in overtime, 116-115. Wall outshined fellow rookie
Evan Turner, who scored all of his nine points for the Sixers in
the fourth quarter. The winless Sixers are home tonight to host the
Indiana Pacers.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Penn State coach Joe Paterno is downplaying
the attention about his nearing 400 career win -- instead
suggesting he's focused on settling on a quarterback. Matt McGloin
did well enough last week filling in for Rob Bolden that Paterno
says the two will compete for the starting job this week as Penn
State prepares to face Northwestern.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - After losing linebacker Thaddeus Gibson to the
49ers on a waiver claim, the Steelers have signed outside
linebacker Chris Ellis to their practice squad. Ellis was waived by
Buffalo earlier this month. A former defensive end at Virginia
Tech, Ellis was replaced there by Jason Worilds, who is now a
backup linebacker for the Steelers.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - It turns out the Steelers apparently didn't
challenge a possible TD run by Rashard Mendenhall Sunday against
the Saints because coaches in the press box couldn't see the same
replays being shown on TV. NBC's replays appeared to show the ball
touching the goal line before Mendenhall was tackled, but coach
Mike Tomlin didn't challenge the call. The Saints won 20-10.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Big East plans to expand its football
membership to 10, from the current 9. The conference told Villanova
in September that it wanted to add them to the conference, with the
Wildcats moving up from FCS play. Commissioner John Marinatto says
the league will start to evaluate potential expansion candidates.

DALLAS (AP) - The Pittsburgh Penguins open up a three-game road
trip tonight in Dallas. Coach Dan Bylsma hasn't said who he will
start in goal -- Marc-Andre Fleury or backup Brent Johnson, who has
compiled a 5-0-1 record on the season compared to Fleury's 1-5.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - College basketball is heading into the
exhibition season. Number 6 Villanova cruised to a 95-68 win over
Division II District of Columbia last night with 17 points from
Corey Fisher. Number 10 Syracuse also downed Kutztown 96-60.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Now that the baseball season has ended, the
Pittsburgh Pirates plan to talk with Rangers batting coach Clint
Hurdle about the Pirates' vacant manager job. Hurdle was manager of
the Rockies from 2002 to 2009. The Pirates last interviewed a
candidate in mid-October, when they talked to Braves bench coach
Carlos Tosca.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State athletic officials confirm
that Clint Gyory has been dismissed from his job as the Nittany
Lion mascot, saying he broke a team rule. Officials had earlier
said Gyory had been cited for underage drinking and other charges
in August.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Scott Hartnell scored two goals and Claude
Giroux added one to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to a 3-2 victory
over the Carolina Hurricanes last night. The Flyers won their
fourth straight after losing four of five, and took over sole
possession of first place in the Atlantic Division.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Flyers forward Danny Briere has been
suspended three games by the NHL for his crosscheck of the
Islanders' Frans Nielsen. Briere had a conference call with the
NHL's disciplinary committee Monday. He missed last night's game
against Carolina. He'll also sit out Thursday's game against the
Rangers and Saturday's game against the Islanders.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Penguins forward Jordan Staal is out
indefinitely after sustaining an undisclosed injury during
practice. He had been expected to return this week after missing 12
games with an infection in his right foot. Staal left practice
after about a half-hour Monday with what coach Dan Bylsma said was
an upper-body injury.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Michael Vick has completed his first full
practice since a rib cartilage injury sidelined him four weeks ago.
Vick says he "felt great" and expects to start for the
Philadelphia Eagles when they host the Indianapolis Colts next
Sunday. He missed three games after being injured in a loss to
Washington on October 3rd.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Dimitri Patterson has replaced Ellis Hobbs
as a starting cornerback for the Philadelphia Eagles. Patterson
worked with the first team on Monday in the team's first practice
since Tennessee's Kenny Britt had 225 yards receiving in a 37-19
win against the Eagles on October 24th.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Davey Lopes has informed the Philadelphia
Phillies he won't return as first-base coach. Lopes spent the last
four seasons with the Phillies, and played a significant role in
the team's success in stealing bases. Under Lopes, the Phillies led
the league in stolen-base percentage four straight seasons.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates will conclude spring training with
two games in Philadelphia for the second year in a row. The Pirates
play in the Phillies' ballpark March 29th and 30th, following their
final Florida exhibition game March 28th against Minnesota in Fort
Myers. They will work out in Chicago on March 31st before opening
the season against the Cubs on Friday, April 1st.

NEW YORK (AP) - A regular-season NFL game has earned a higher
television rating than the World Series. The "Sunday Night
Football" matchup between the last two Super Bowl champions drew
an 11.8 overnight rating and 18 share. Game 4 of the World Series
had a 10.4/16. NBC says this was the first time an NFL game
outrated the World Series.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Drew Brees passed for 305 yards and two
touchdowns and the Saints defeated the Steelers 20-10 last night.
Rashard Mendenhall had the only touchdown for Pittsburgh on a
38-yard run in the fourth quarter. Steelers quarterback Ben
Roethlisberger was 17 of 28 for 195 yards in a matchup of the past
two Super Bowl champs.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans fans dressed up for the world's
largest Halloween party. An adjudicator from Guinness World Records
verified that at least 17,777 fans attending Sunday night's game
between the Saints and the Pittsburgh Steelers came in costume,
setting a record for the largest gathering of Halloween revelers.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Matt McGloin's name should be familiar
now to Penn State fans after throwing for 250 yards and a score in
the 41-31 win Saturday night over the porous Michigan Wolverines.
It was an incredible debut for the first former walk-on to start at
quarterback in coach Joe Paterno's 45-year tenure with the Nittany
Lions.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State's game against Northwestern
will kick off at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Beaver Stadium. The game
will be nationally televised on ABC and ESPN2. Penn State is coming
off a win over Michigan Saturday night, while Northwestern is 6-2
after beating Indiana last weekend.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ashton Gibbs scored 25 points and Number 5
Pittsburgh began the game with a 23-point run while beating
Northwood 104-62 in exhibition play yesterday. Brad Wanamaker
scored 18 points and freshman J.J. Moore had 17 for the Panthers,
who didn't allow Northwood to score for the first 8:27. Pitt led
46-28 at the half.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Duquesne senior forward Damian Saunders will
sit out the November 13th season opener against Division II
Bluefield State because of an unspecified violation of team rules.
The 6-foot-7 Saunders, the Dukes' leading returning scorer and
rebounder, was held out of an exhibition game Saturday against La
Roche and will not play in an exhibition against Lycoming next
week.
