PHILADELPHIA (AP) - New captain Chris Pronger, recovering from
two offseason surgeries, made his preseason debut in the Flyers'
2-1 win over the New Jersey Devils last night. Pronger, who last
played April 30th during a second-round playoff loss to the Boston
Bruins, underwent procedures on his wrist and back.

CHESTER, Pa. (AP) - Sebastien Le Toux scored two first-half
goals, Michael Farfan added the go-ahead goal in the 57th minute
and the Philadelphia Union extended their unbeaten streak to five
with a 3-2 victory over D.C. United yesterday. The Union jumped
from fourth place to second in the Eastern Conference.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ray Graham rushed for 226 yards and two
touchdowns and Pittsburgh dominated Number 16 South Florida 44-17
last night. Graham's 13-yard touchdown gave Pitt the lead for good
late in the first half and his 8-yard sprint up the middle early in
the fourth quarter sealed it as the Panthers broke a five-game
losing streak against ranked opponents.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - It's all or nothing for the Philadelphia
Phillies this postseason. Expectations are so high in the City of
Brotherly Love that anything less than a World Series title will be
considered a failure by fans, players and management. Their road
begins tomorrow against the wild-card St. Louis Cardinals at
Citizens Bank Park.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates are upbeat even as The
Streak lives on. The Pirates couldn't find a way to end 18
consecutive years of losing, finishing with a 72-90 record. Still,
the franchise posted a 15-win improvement over 2010 and was in
first place in late July before plummeting through the standings.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - For the second time in as many games,
Philadelphia coach Andy Reid and defensive coordinator Juan
Castillo have shaken up the Eagles' linebacking lineup. This time
the birds benched embattled rookie fourth-round pick Casey Matthews
and replaced him at weakside outside linebacker with another
rookie, 5-foot-10 Brian Rolle.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace
is flying past the opposition. He tells anyone who asks he's the
fastest player in the NFL. Opposing cornerbacks won't argue. After
an electrifying five-catch, 144-yard performance in a 23-20 win in
Indianapolis on Sunday, Wallace is second in the NFL in receiving
yards and tied for third in receptions.

TORONTO (AP) - The lawyer for a man accused of throwing a banana
at a black NHL player says his client deeply regrets what he did
and had no idea his actions could be seen as racist. Lawyer Faisal
Joseph says Chris Moorhouse was caught up in the drama of a tense
game featuring his favorite hockey team and threw the banana at the
Philadelphia Flyers' Wayne Simmonds in hopes of preventing the
winning goal. The Detroit Red Wings won in a shootout.

ATLANTA (AP) - The Atlanta Braves are doing their best to give
away what looked like a certain playoff berth just a few weeks ago.
Derek Lowe had another miserable outing, surrendering five runs in
four-plus innings, and the Philadelphia Phillies romped to a 7-1
victory last night that left the Braves on the brink going to the
final day of the regular season.

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Prince Fielder homered three times in a game
for the first time in his career, including a two-run shot in the
seventh inning that lifted the Milwaukee Brewers to a 6-4 victory
over the Pittsburgh Pirates last night. With the win, the Brewers
crept closer to securing home-field advantage in the first round of
the playoffs.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Matt Niskanen scored in the eighth round
of the shootout to lift the Pittsburgh Penguins past the Los
Angeles Kings 3-2 in a preseason game last night. The game was the
Sprint Center's only professional game this year as the NBA
canceled the October 15th matchup between the Miami Heat and
Houston Rockets because of the lockout.

NEW YORK (AP) - The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation
is calling for Philadelphia Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds to
apologize for a slur he appeared to utter toward Sean Avery of the
New York Rangers. It also wants the NHL to educate fans against
hate speech.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is
looking to add some depth to the offensive line after three
starters all missed time during a 23-20 win over Indianapolis
Sunday night. Tomlin says right tackle Marcus Gilbert, right guard
Doug Legursky and left tackle Jonathan Scott are all questionable
for Sunday's game at Houston and the team is exploring free agent
options.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - The Penn State Nittany Lions are
relieved about the prognosis of injured cornerback D'Anton Lynn. He
was carted off the field in a scary scene during Saturday's 34-6
win over Eastern Michigan. Lynn was released from the hospital a
couple hours later. Coach Joe Paterno says Lynn could return to
practice this week.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey official says Newark nearly got
to host the Yankees' top minor-league team for 2012 - but the deal
was blocked by the Mets. The team needs a temporary home while its
regular one, PNC Field in Scranton, Pennsylvania, is repaired.

ATLANTA (AP) - The Atlanta Braves took another wrenching loss in
their September swoon, squandering an early two-run lead against
Cliff Lee as the playoff-bound Philadelphia Phillies rallied for a
4-2 victory last night. Lee pitched six strong innings, Jimmy
Rollins homered and Raul Ibanez drove in two runs.

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Alex Presley homered to lead off the game and
drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, lifting the
Pittsburgh Pirates to a 9-8 victory over the Brewers last night to
snap a 12-game skid in Milwaukee. Presley finished 3 for 5 with
three RBIs and closer Joel Hanrahan held on for his 40th save to
give Pittsburgh its fourth win in 40 tries over the last five years
at Miller Park.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jaromir Jagr scored two power-play goals and
had three points, and Claude Giroux had three assists as the
Philadelphia Flyers outlasted the New York Rangers, 5-3, last
night. Jagr, a former Ranger making his first home appearance as a
Flyer, made a grand entrance in front of the faithful, and now has
three preseason goals.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - New York Rangers forward Sean Avery says
Wayne Simmonds of Philadelphia uttered a homophobic slur at him on
the ice. Avery told ESPN.com that Simmonds made the remark during
the first period of Philadelphia's 5-3 preseason win over the
Rangers last night. ESPN.com reported that a video replay showed
Simmonds issuing the epithet toward Avery near the Flyers bench.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Michael Vick says he won't complain about
the officials anymore. The star quarterback blasted officials after
injuring his right hand in Philadelphia's 29-16 loss to the New
York Giants on Sunday, saying he takes too many late hits without
getting the benefit of roughing-the-passer penalties.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin says he
doesn't care how it looks, he's just happy to escape with a 23-20
win over Indianapolis Sunday night. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger
threw for 364 yards but fumbled twice and threw an interception.
Running back Rashard Mendenhall struggled once again, managing just
37 yards on 18 carries.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Sidney Crosby isn't the only superstar the
Pittsburgh Penguins are waiting on to return to form. Center Evgeni
Malkin, like Crosby, spent the second half of last season on the
sidelines with an injury. Unlike Crosby, Malkin will be ready to go
when the Penguins open the season next week.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Flyers will host the New
York Rangers in the NHL Winter Classic on January 2nd at Citizens
Bank Park. The 45,000-seat ballpark is the setting for the fifth
classic. The game is not held on its traditional January 1st date
because it conflicted with the final week of the NFL's regular
season.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - In a game that was much closer than most
expected, Shaun Suisham kicked a 38-yard field goal to get the
Steelers past the Indianapolis Colts last night 23-20. Ben
Roethlisberger struggled -- losing two fumbles and throwing an
interception during an 11-minute first-half span -- but in the end
he also came back and engineered a 60-yard march to set up the
winning score.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Colts quarterback Peyton Manning made his
first appearance in front of the Indianapolis fans in nearly a
month. Manning was the sidelines during last night's pregame
warmups. The four-time MVP has missed all three games after having
two surgeries.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Eagles lost to the Giants yesterday
afternoon and again lost quarterback Michael Vick. Eli Manning
threw four touchdown passes in a 29-16 Giants win. Vick, who
suffered a concussion last week, left yesterday's game with a
broken right hand. It is uncertain how long the injury might
sideline Vick.

NEW YORK (AP) - Roy Halladay got his 19th win and the Phillies
snapped their eight-game losing streak yesterday, taking the finale
of their series against the Mets in New York, 9-4. The Phillies
played their regular lineup for the first time since clinching the
National League East. Every starter had a hit by the third in the
win for the Phils.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates were unable to get a three-game
sweep in their final home series at PNC Park, falling to the
Cincinnati Reds 5-4 yesterday. Chase d'Arnaud had two hits for the
Bucs, including a two-run triple. Daniel Moskos took the loss,
allowing three consecutive hits in the sixth, while Dontrelle
Willis got the win for the Reds.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State is heading into Big Ten
play minus two key defenders after Saturday's win over Eastern
Michigan. Linebacker Michael Mauti is expected to miss the
remainder of the season after injuring his knee. Cornerback D'Anton
Lynn could also miss time after being taken off the field with a
possible spinal injury. He was released from a hospital after a few
hours but there've been no details on the injury.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Penguins star Sidney Crosby took part in a
controlled scrimmage yesterday as he continues to work his way back
from concussion-like symptoms that have kept him from playing since
January. Crosby took face-offs and worked on set plays in some
five-on-five drills. Crosby says he's been symptom-free throughout
camp but he is still wearing a white helmet showing he's not been
cleared yet for contact work.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - LeBron James had a superstar trio with him
at Philadelphia's Palestra last night but came up short in a in a
battle of all-star teams. Team Philly downed the James, Carmelo
Anthony and Chris Paul-led team 131-122. The sold-out crowd greeted
James with boos when he came onto the floor.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ryan Ludwick's single in the bottom of the
ninth drove in the winning run and the Pittsburgh Pirates came back
from a blown save in the top of the inning for a 4-3 victory over
the Cincinnati Reds. Ludwick's fly ball to deep center field fell
for a single and scored pinch-runner Chase d'Arnaud from second
after pinch-hitter Jason Jaramillo had doubled to left with one
out. Garrett Jones homered for the first time in more than a month
for Pittsburgh (70-87), which reached 70 wins for the first time
since 2004.

NEW YORK (AP) - The scheduled game between the Phillies and Mets
last night has been postponed because of rain. The game will be
made up as part of a day-night doubleheader today. The first game
is slated to start at 1:10 p.m. and the second game at 7:10 p.m.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Eagles quarterback Michael Vick practiced
for a second consecutive day yesterday and pronounced himself ready
to play against the Giants in the Eagles' home opener tomorrow,
seven days after he left a game against the Falcons with a
concussion.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) - Omar Bravo scored his team-leading
ninth goal of the season, and Sporting Kansas City moved back into
the MLS' Eastern Conference lead with a 1-1 draw against the
Philadelphia Union on Friday night. Sporting (10-9-11) and
Columbus, which hosts Los Angeles on Saturday night, each have 41
points. Sebastien Le Toux scored a second-half equalizer for
Philadelphia (9-7-13), which moved into third place in the East
with 40 points.

PHOENIX (AP) - The Arizona Diamondbacks have acquired
left-handed reliever Mike Zagurski from the Philadelphia Phillies
for a player to be named later. Zagurski had a 5.40 ERA with four
strikeouts in four games with the Phillies this season. He also
went 4-0 with 11 saves and a 2.65 ERA in 46 games with Triple-A
Lehigh Valley.

TORONTO (AP) - The NHL calls it "stupid and ignorant." A
banana was thrown from the stands in London, Ontario, on Thursday
night as Flyers winger Wayne Simmonds was skating toward Detroit
goalie Jordan Pearce in a shootout during an exhibition game.
Simmonds is black. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman called the act
"obviously stupid and ignorant" and in no way represents "our
fans or the people of London, Ontario."

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State backup tailback Brandon
Beachum will miss today's game against Eastern Michigan due to a
sprained right foot. The team says the injury occurred this week in
practice. With 21 carries on 81 yards, Beachum is the Nittany
Lions' second-leading rusher behind Silas Redd.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pitt will try to give coach Todd Graham his
first signature win today against Notre Dame. The Panthers blew a
21-point lead in a loss to Iowa last Saturday. Pitt has won two of
the last three meetings with the Irish, including a 27-22 win at
Heinz Field in 2009.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Paul Spadafora, the former International
Boxing Federation lightweight champion, has been arrested on
suspicion of drunken driving near Pittsburgh. Jefferson Hills
police say that the 36-year-old boxer from McKees Rocks was stopped
for driving 66 mph in a 40 mph zone Thursday night. Police say he
appeared to be drunk and failed field sobriety tests.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies dropped their fifth straight
last night, losing to the Washington Nationals 7-5. Danny Espinosa
and Wilson Ramos each hit two-run homers in the win. For the
Phillies, the losing skid is their worst since May of last year.
Vance Worley took the loss to fall to 11-3.

PHOENIX (AP) - Miguel Montero had three hits -- including a
two-run home run -- as the Diamondbacks beat the Pirates 8-5
yesterday. The D-backs put pressure on the Pirates from the start,
setting a team record with four stolen bases while scoring three
runs off of loser Russ Ohlendorf in the first inning. Ohlendorf
falls to 1-3 with the loss.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Free-agent acquisition Ilya Bryzgalov made
his first appearance as a Flyer last night, getting 21 saves but
allowing goals to Juraj Mikus, Matt Frattin and Joe Colborne in a
4-2 exhibition loss to Toronto. Bryzgalov signed a nine-year, $51
million contract in June with the Flyers.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Evgeni Malkin had a goal and an assist in his
first NHL game action in more than seven months as the Penguins
downed the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 last night in the preseason opener
for both teams. Malkin hadn't played since February, when he tore
an ACL. Sidney Crosby did not play as he's not been cleared for
contact following a concussion last season.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State coach Joe Paterno plans to
play both Rob Bolden and Matt McGloin Saturday when the Nittany
Lions take on Eastern Michigan. Penn State's defense has been
strong this season but the 2-1 Nittany Lions rank last in the Big
Ten in a number of offensive categories, and are the only team in
the league without a passing touchdown.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Steelers are still waiting to see the
arrival of their running game this season. At 1-1 after the NFL
season's first two weeks, the Steelers are 20th in the league in
rushing yards heading into Sunday's game against Indianapolis.
Running back Isaac Reedman says he expects things to even out as
the jumbled offensive line learns how to play together.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Gina Mancuso had 22 kills and Morgan
Broekhuis had 12 as Nebraska downed four-time defending national
champ Penn State in the Big Ten volleyball opener for both teams
last night. The 10th-ranked Cornhuskers won the first two sets
before the fifth-ranked Lions came back to win the third and fourth
games to force a fifth.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ross Detwiler outpitched Cliff Lee by
tossing 7 1-3 impressive innings and the Washington Nationals beat
the NL East champion Philadelphia Phillies 3-0 last night to
complete a sweep of their day-night doubleheader. In the opener,
Tommy Milone threw six scoreless innings and pinch-hitter Ryan
Zimmerman delivered an RBI single in the 10th to lift the Nationals
to a 4-3 victory.

PHOENIX (AP) - Charlie Morton threw six scoreless innings and
the Pittsburgh Pirates slowed Arizona's drive toward the NL West
title with a 5-3 victory over the Diamondbacks last night. The
Diamondbacks got some help, though, when Clayton Kershaw pitched
the Dodgers to a 2-1 victory over San Francisco in Los Angeles.

TORONTO (AP) - Sergei Bobrovsky made 27 saves to lead the
Philadelphia Flyers to a 4-0 exhibition victory over the Toronto
Maple Leafs last night. The Flyers scored three times in the second
period, with forwards Zac Rinaldo, Wayne Simmonds and Mike
Testwuide beating Leafs goalie James Reimer in an 11-minute span.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The latest version of a revolving-door
offensive line satisfied Steelers coach Mike Tomlin Sunday. Good
thing, too, as it's highly possible each will start again this
week. Tomlin said yesterday that starting left guard Chris Kemoeatu
will be evaluated throughout the week to see if he can practice at
full speed after he missed the 24-0 win over Seattle with a knee
injury.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - The most prominent football program in
the East plays in a conference filled with Midwestern schools. But
don't expect Penn State to take part in the latest round of
changes. Coach Joe Paterno yesterday even suggested again looking
eastward to expand the Big Ten, throwing out Rutgers as a potential
addition for a league with its Eastern terminus in Happy Valley.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - The Penn State women's volleyball team
faces a high-profile challenge for its Big Ten opener with a visit
today to Nebraska. It's the Cornhuskers' conference debut after the
school jumped to the Big Ten from the Big 12. Another sellout is
expected at Nebraska Coliseum, where the 10th-ranked Huskers have
sold out 152 straight matches.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A Philadelphia judge has declared a mistrial
for three men charged in a fatal beating outside a Phillies game
two years ago. The mistrial yesterday comes after a prosecution
witness identified defendant Frances Kirchner as the person who
kicked David Sale Jr., of Lansdale.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A federal judicial panel is considering
whether to reverse a ruling it made a week ago to declare nine-time
Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis eligible to run for state Senate
in New Jersey. The three judges held a hearing yesterday on the
matter. New Jersey election officials and Republicans say the
Democrat does not meet a four-year residency requirement.

SHARON, Pa. (AP) - Members of two Pennsylvania high school
football teams have been suspended after a brawl prompted officials
to end their game early. Officials at Sharon and Hickory high
schools say additional penalties are also planned for more than a
dozen players involved in the rumble during the fourth quarter of
Friday's game at Sharon.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - Eli Manning tossed a pair of TD
passes and linebacker Michael Boley scored on a 65-yard fumble
return to lead the New York Giants to a 28-16 victory over the St.
Louis Rams for their first win of the season. That gave Giants
coach Tom Coughlin (KAWF'-lihn) a win over Steve Spagnuolo
(spag-NOH'-loh) in their first matchup since the one-time Giants
defensive coordinator left to take over as coach of the winless
Rams.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Peyton Manning made it out to practice
yesterday, but he's still nowhere close to throwing a football. The
four-time MVP was in good spirits when he made his first public
appearance on the field since having neck surgery Sept. 8. Manning
didn't participate in the practice.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Michael Vick's status for the Eagles' next
game is uncertain because of a concussion sustained in Sunday
night's 35-31 loss at Atlanta. The veteran quarterback must pass
several tests and be evaluated by an independent neurologist before
he can be cleared to return. If he can't, Mike Kafka or Vince Young
gets the nod.

UNDATED (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals gained a game in the NL
wild card race and now trail Atlanta by 2-1/2 games. The Cards held
off Philadelphia 4-3 while Omar Infante (in-fahn-TAY') hit two-run
walkoff home run to give the Florida Marlins a 6-5 win over the
Braves.

NEW YORK (AP) - Mariano Rivera sits atop the world of relief
pitchers after notching his record 602nd save, passing Trevor
Hoffman on the all-time saves list. It came in the Yanks' 6-4 win
over Minnesota which, combined with Boston's doubleheader split
with Baltimore, increased the Yanks' lead to five games in the AL
East.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ryan Howard hit an RBI double in the 10th
inning soon after Cliff Lee fell one strike short of his seventh
shutout, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Florida Marlins 2-1
yesterday to sweep the day-night doubleheader. The Phillies reduced
their magic number for clinching a fifth straight NL East title to
two.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Florida
Marlins 3-1 yesterday in Game 1 of a day-night doubleheader at
Citizens Bank Park. Kyle Kendrick threw five strong innings in the
opener to help with the win.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Ross Ohlendorf got his first win of the
season in seven starts and hit a three-run homer to help the
Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-2 last night, a
loss that mathematically eliminated the bankrupt franchise from the
NL West race. Ohlendorf allowed two runs and four hits in seven
innings, struck out six and walked none.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles have history on

HOUSTON (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies have clinched a playoff
spot. Roy Halladay pitched a six-hitter and the Phils became the
first team to reach the playoffs this season with a 1-0 win over
the Houston Astros yesterday.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates have clinched their
19th consecutive losing season, losing to the St. Louis Cardinals
3-2 yesterday. That sets a record for a major league franchise in
North America.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - With Michael Vick at the helm, the
Philadelphia Eagles have one of the most dynamic offenses in the
NFL. While Vick had six, mostly spectacular season with the Atlanta
Falcons, he's a far more complete player now. Vick will head back
to Atlanta this weekend as the Eagles take on the Falcons.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Injuries have pushed Pittsburgh Steelers
rookie Marcus Gilbert into a starting role. He will play starting
right tackle Sunday when the Steelers host Seattle. Veteran Willie
Colon tore the triceps in his right arm last week against Baltimore
and is out for the season.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates will open the 2012
season against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Pirates 2012 schedule
was released yesterday. It begins with a three-game series at PNC
Park against the Phillies beginning April 5th. The Pirates will
also host interleague series against AL Central teams Kansas City,
Minnesota and Detroit. The team will also play at Detroit,
Baltimore and Cleveland.

HOUSTON (AP) - Clint Barmes hit a three-run homer and J.A. Happ
pitched six solid innings against his former team as the Houston
Astros beat Philadelphia 5-2 last night, preventing the Phillies
from wrapping up a playoff spot. The Phillies needed a win over
Houston or a loss by St. Louis to clinch at least a wild-card
berth.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Nick Punto hit a go-ahead double in the ninth
inning and the surging St. Louis Cardinals overcame three errors by
first baseman Albert Pujols to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-4 last
night. Trying to stay in the wild card and NL Central races, the
Cardinals won for the sixth time in seven games.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Steelers have placed starting right tackle
Willie Colon on the injured reserve list and signed well-traveled
veteran Jamon Meredith. Colon underwent surgery early yesterday to
repair a torn triceps muscle sustained in a season-opening loss to
Baltimore.

UNDATED (AP) - Filling those Big Ten schedules is a balancing
act. Players and fans look forward to big early-season games like
Ohio State's trip to Miami this weekend. Southeast Missouri State's
visit to Purdue doesn't have the same mark of distinction. Coaches
and administrators say it's complicated. Smaller schools rely
heavily on payouts from big-time teams to balance their athletic
department budgets.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A federal appeals court says in a 2-1
decision that nine-time Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis should be
back on the ballot for a seat in the New Jersey state senate. The
ruling yesterday could be the final word on a candidacy marked by
legal questions about whether Lewis meets the state's residency
requirement.

HOUSTON (AP) - Carlos Lee hit a two-run homer off former
teammate Roy Oswalt and the Houston Astros beat the Philadelphia
Phillies 5-1 last night. Despite the loss, Philadelphia's magic
number for gaining at least a wild-card playoff spot dropped to one
with St. Louis' 6-5 loss to Pittsburgh.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates stunned St. Louis 6-5
last night, damaging the Cardinals' playoff chances. Pedro Ciriaco
hit a tiebreaking double to cap a three-run rally in the eighth
inning. Albert Pujols hit his NL-leading 35th homer and drove in
three runs for St. Louis, which had won five in a row to climb
within 4 1/2 games of Atlanta for the NL wild card.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers are regrouping after
their 35-7 loss to the Ravens in Baltimore on Sunday. Wide receiver
Antonio Brown said yesterday the Steelers were "humbled" by the
Ravens. The offense turned the ball over seven times. Brown says
there's plenty to work on before facing Seattle next Sunday.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Despite a convincing 18-point victory in the
season opener against the St. Louis Rams, the Philadelphia Eagles
say they have a ways to go. Coach Andy Reid says there's plenty of
room for improvement if the Eagles are going to fulfill their goal
of winning the Super Bowl.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pitt coach Todd Graham isn't in a hurry to
switch quarterbacks, yet he knows he needs to get more out of Tino
Sunseri if the Panthers want to win Saturday at Iowa. Sunseri threw
a pair of interceptions during Saturday's 35-29 win over Maine, and
all but one of Pitt's nine touchdowns this season have been scored
by running backs.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A suburban Philadelphia boy is back home
after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver outside AT&T Park in
San Francisco. Nine-year-old Ryan White returned home Saturday,
greeted by more than 100 friends, neighbors and well-wishers. White
was hit August 4th outside the ballpark after seeing the Phillies
shut out the San Francisco Giants.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - The Eagles opened up their season with a 31-13
win over the Rams in St. Louis yesterday, LeSean McCoy scored twice
while Michael Vick rushed for 98 yards and DeSean Jackson had more
than 100 yards receiving in the win.

BALTIMORE (AP) - The Steelers were flat for their opener Sunday,
losing to the Ravens in Baltimore 35-7. The Ravens took a 14-0 lead
in the first quarter and never let up against the Steelers. The
loss ended Pittsburgh's eight-game winning streak in season
openers.

MILWAUKEE (AP) - The Phillies missed out on a chance to clinch a
playoff spot as they lost yesterday to the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2.
Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo struck out 12 Phillies to move to
16-10. Shane Victorino and Ryan Howard homered in the loss for the
Phillies.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Javier Vazquez threw six scoreless innings as
the Marlins finished off a sweep of the Pirates at PNC Park
yesterday, 4-1. The Pirates finished the season series 0-6 against
Florida, with the Marlins now winning 14 of their last 16 against
Pittsburgh overall.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates have given GM Neal Huntington a
three-year contract extension, with the Pirates showing improvement
through much of the season. The deal extends Huntington through the
2014 season, with a team option for 2015. The Pirates had the lead
in the NL Central in late July, although a 10-game losing skid then
dashed any postseason hopes. They 66-80, two losses short of
ensuring another sub-.500 season.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State's stay in the college
football rankings was a short one. The Nittany Lions dropped out of
the AP Top 25 after Saturday's loss to Alabama. The Crimson Tide is
now ranked second, behind Oklahoma and ahead of LSU.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Atlanta
Braves 3-2 last night to complete a three-game sweep and extend
their lead to 10 1/2 games in the NL East. Pinch-hitter Ross Gload hit
an RBI single with one out in the bottom of the ninth for the win.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies have been denied
their protest for a fan interference call in a 5-4, 14-inning loss
to the Florida Marlins on Sunday. Major League Baseball made the
announcement after the play was reviewed by Joe Torre. Torre is the
executive vice president for baseball operations.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Houston Astros
5-4 last night. Andrew McCutchen homered twice and pinch-hitter
Jason Jaramillo singled home the go-ahead run in the eighth inning.
The Pirates' bullpen combined for 5 2-3 innings of scoreless
relief.

CHESTER, Pa. (AP) - Freddy Adu scored, Sebastien Le Toux had two
second-half goals and the Philadelphia Union overcome a three-goal
deficit to tie the New England Revolution 4-4 last night. Le Toux
scored on a penalty kick in the 80th minute to pull the Union
within a goal, and then tied it in the first minute of stoppage
time. Roger Torres also scored for the Union.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu is
keeping his contract talks quiet. He says talks about his future
with the defending AFC champions are between his agent and the
team. The 2010 NFL Defensive Player of the Year is in the final
season of a five-year deal that will pay him about $6.4 million
this season.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles are eager for the
season opener at St. Louis on Sunday. For all the hype surrounding
the Eagles, Michael Vick and his teammates know they haven't done
anything yet. Wide receiver Jeremy Maclin says, "We know if we do
what we're capable of and play to our abilities, then we can
achieve what we want to achieve. But we have to go out there and do
it."

PITTSBURGH (AP) - There's no timetable for Pittsburgh Penguins
star Sidney Crosby's return. Crosby says it's "likely" he'll
return to play this season, but he says he won't rush back to the
ice. Crosby hasn't played since suffering a pair of concussions in
January.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State is urging fans heading to
Happy Valley this weekend for the Number 23 Nittany Lions' game
against Number 3 Alabama to prepare for changes in game day parking
and traffic due to the wet weather. The remnants of Tropical Storm
Lee have dumped more rainfall this week on waterlogged
Pennsylvania, with flood warnings and watches in effect for much of
the state until tonight.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State coach Joe Paterno has been
nominated for the nation's top civilian honor. Congressman Glenn
Thompson and Senators Pat Toomey and Bob Casey say they nominated
Paterno for the Presidential Medal of Freedom. They cited the
coach's contributions to athletics and higher education.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Rookie Vance Worley pitched six effective
innings and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves 6-3
on a rain-soaked night to extend their lead in the NL East to 9 1-2
games. The major league-leading Phillies won their 90th game and
reduced their magic number for clinching their fifth straight NL
East title to 14 games.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Brett Myers pitched into the eighth inning to
earn his first win in 2 1/2 months and the Houston Astros beat the
Pittsburgh Pirates 4-1 last night. Ryan Doumit homered for
Pittsburgh, which has lost two of three and seven of 10.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh's starting third baseman on opening
day was among six players the Pirates added to their roster. Pedro
Alvarez, along with left-handed pitchers Jeff Locke, Aaron Thompson
and Daniel Moskos, were recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis
yesterday.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia Flyers general manager Paul
Holmgren is in the hospital after a bike crash at the Jersey shore.
Holmgren was hurt Monday while riding his bicycle in Avalon, New
Jersey. He was listed in stable condition yesterday at a hospital
in Camden, New Jersey. A team spokesman says Holmgren is sore but
in good spirits.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison
says the defending AFC champions' defense is just right. Harrison
says he's tired of critics calling their D too old. The Steelers
will have eight defensive starters at least 30 years old on the
field when they open the season at Baltimore Sunday.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State is back in the AP Top 25
just in time for Saturday's showdown with Number 3 Alabama. The
Nittany Lions made their season debut in the poll this week at
Number 23, coming off a 41-7 rout of FCS school Indiana State in
the season opener.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh coach Todd Graham's Panthers are
taking baby steps toward a "high octane" approach. The team
needed more than three quarters to pull away from Buffalo in a
35-16 victory over the Bulls last Saturday and relied heavily on
running back Ray Graham.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State's fledgling women's ice
hockey team will join the College Hockey America conference
starting in 2012-2013. The addition of Penn State boosts the CHA's
membership to five. The other CHA schools are Mercyhurst, Niagara,
Robert Morris and Syracuse.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Cliff Lee tossed a five-hitter for his sixth
shutout of the season, helping the NL East-leading Philadelphia
Phillies beat the second-place Atlanta Braves 9-0 last night. Lee
struck out six, walked none and needed only 100 pitches to finish
off the Braves after falling one out shy of a shutout in his
previous start at Cincinnati.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies have activated pitcher Joe
Blanton from the disabled list after the right-hander missed 3 1-2
months with an elbow injury. Blanton was added to the roster before
the NL East-leading Phillies opened a three-game set with
second-place Atlanta yesterday.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Houston Astros
3-1 yesterday. Ryan Doumit had three hits and James McDonald was
solid, pitching into the eighth inning. Josh Harrison added two
hits and Derrek Lee hit his 16th homer of the season - and fourth
with Pittsburgh.

PHILADEPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia Eagles' Michael Vick is ready
for the season opener Sunday against the Rams at St. Louis. He
spoke to reporters after practice yesterday about expectations that
have been placed on the Eagles. The veteran quarterback says
there's always pressure. He says, "We just have to make sure we
thrive off that pressure and produce on the field."

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers will open the 2011
regular season this Sunday in Baltimore against the Ravens.
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger says his team will be ready
to play. He says, "We have a couple more days to prepare and get
ready. We have no choice this week but to be ready."

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Cam Newton threw his first touchdown pass
as a pro during the Carolina Panthers' 33-17 loss to the Pittsburgh
Steelers last night in their preseason finale. The Heisman Trophy
winner and Number 1 draft pick out of Auburn played only the first
series. Charlie Batch started for Pittsburgh and was 6 of 8 for 59
yards and led a touchdown drive while playing roughly one quarter.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - Vince Young led the Philadelphia
Eagles on two scoring drives before leaving with a hamstring injury
in a 24-14 victory over the New York Jets last night. Young started
for Michael Vick as both teams rested almost all of their starters
in the preseason finale. Jets rookie Greg McElroy started for Mark
Sanchez. He left after injuring his right thumb in the second
quarter.

CINCINNATI (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies completed an
historic four-game sweep in Cincinnati with a 6-4 win yesterday.
Ryan Howard hit his 30th homer and Vance Worley pitched into the
seventh inning.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The surging Los Angeles Dodgers survived a
shaky ninth inning to beat the slumping Pittsburgh Pirates 6-4
yesterday. Dana Eveland pitched eight crisp innings to help with
the win. Eveland gave up one run and six hits in his first major
league game since he pitched 2 2-3 innings for Pittsburgh at Texas
on June 23rd, 2010.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled catcher
Jason Jaramillo and purchased the contract of left-hander Brian
Burres from Triple-A Indianapolis. Manager Clint Hurdle says Burres
is likely to start today at Chicago against the Cubs.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Bernard Pierce made Temple coach Steve
Addazio a winner in his debut, rushing for 147 yards and three
touchdowns in the Owls' 42-7 win over Villanova last night. The
Owls won the Mayor's Cup in front of 32,638 fans at Lincoln
Financial Field.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - The focus will be on the Nittany
Lion's offensive line when Penn State squares off against Indiana
State tomorrow. Three starters return from last year's front five
which effectively protected the quarterback but struggled at times
in the run game. Coach Joe Paterno says he's fine with his
projected starting five, though he remains concerned about
developing competent backups.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Stephen Strasburg allowed one hit over
six shutout innings last night for Double-A Harrisburg in what was
expected to be his final minor league rehab start before he returns
to the Washington Nationals. Featuring a fastball that hit 99 mph,
the Number 1 pick from the 2009 draft left with Harrisburg leading
Portland 9-0. He struck out four and threw 70 pitches, 53 for
strikes.

CINCINNATI (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Cincinnati
Reds 3-0 last night. Hunter Pence homered for the second straight
game and Cliff Lee got his sixth straight win. The NL East leaders
are a season-best 40 games over .500, boasting the majors' best
record at 86-46.

CINCINNATI (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies acquired right
fielder John Bowker from the Pittsburgh Pirates yesterday for a
player to be named or cash, adding a left-handed hitter to their
bench. The 28-year-old played in 19 games for the Pirates early
this season.

HOUSTON (AP) - The Houston Astros beat the Pittsburgh Pirates
2-0 last night for a sweep of the three-game series. J.A. Happ
allowed three hits and struck out six over seven innings. Despite
having the worst record in baseball, the Astros have won five of
their last seven overall and seven of their last eight at home.

ATLANTA (AP) - Outfielder Matt Diaz is returning to the Atlanta
Braves after being acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates for a
player to be named. The wild card-leading Braves also received cash
considerations in the deal announced yesterday.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Rookie quarterback Cam Newton will get
one more chance tonight against the Pittsburgh Steelers to impress
coach Ron Rivera and earn the Carolina Panthers starting job.
Although it's almost a foregone conclusion Newton will get the nod,
Rivera has yet to name him the starter for the September 11th
regular season opener at Arizona.

PHILADELHPIA (AP) - Looking out of his second-floor office
window, Temple coach Steve Addazio sees more than a practice field
bordered by a rumbling train route and a dilapidated neighborhood.
Addazio sees where his rose-colored view of Temple's future starts
to take shape. And he's ready to make his mark. The Owls face
Villanova tonight in the Mayor's Cup.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Joe Paterno isn't the only Nittany
Lion on the mend at Penn State. Paterno's team was ravaged by
injuries last season. Paterno this week blamed himself for not
being tough enough on his players, and this year the coaching staff
has put the emphasis on toughness and conditioning in preseason
workouts.

WOODBURY, N.J. (AP) - A former Penn State football player who
was once paralyzed is trying to get into New Jersey politics.
Democratic Party officials say Adam Taliaferro is running for
freeholder in Gloucester County. The Voorhees native suffered a
severe spinal cord injury in 2000 while making a tackle for the
Nittany Lions. Doctors feared he would never walk again. Taliaferro
recovered, graduated from Penn State and went to law school at
Rutgers-Camden.
