PITTSBURGH (AP) - San Francisco's Ryan Vogelsong won while
making his first start in almost seven years, pitching effectively
into the sixth inning against to lead the Giants over the Pirates
5-2 yesterday. The 33-year-old was making his first start since
2004, while he was with the Pirates against the Phillies.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Eagles have tabbed a 26-year-old former
firefighter as their first round pick in the NFL draft.
Philadelphia selected Baylor offensive lineman Danny Watkins with
the 23rd pick of the NFL draft. Watkins, listed at 6-foot-4 and 312
pounds, played left tackle in college, but projects as a guard in
the pros.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The defending AFC champion Steelers selected
Ohio State defensive end Cameron Heyward with the 31st pick in the
NFL Draft. Hayward becomes the second defensive lineman selected by
the Steelers in the first round over the past three seasons.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies have put right-hander Joe
Blanton on the 15-day disabled list with an elbow injury. Vance
Worley will be recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to start
against the Mets tonight. Worley was 2-2 with a 2.78 ERA in four
starts for the IronPigs.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates added outfielder Xavier Paul to
the 25-man roster yesterday and designated John Bowker for
assignment to create space. The 26-year-old lefthander was claimed
off waivers from the Dodgers on Tuesday and arrived in Pittsburgh
late Wednesday. Paul went 3-for-11 this season with the Dodgers and
has a .233 career average and one home run in 146 at-bats over 62
games.

BOSTON (AP) - The Bruins emerged from a hardfought first-round
playoff series convinced that the resilience they showed will help
them avoid a repeat of last season's epic second-round flame out
against the Flyers. Boston squandered a 3-0 series lead to
Philadelphia last spring, allowing the Flyers to become just the
third team in NHL history to accomplish such a comeback.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The 76ers matter again in the NBA. They can
thank Doug Collins for turning the fallen franchise into winners a
year after one of their most awful seasons in 15 years. Collins did
what was promised in his first season as Philadelphia's coach.
Collins had a serious goal at yesterday's exit meetings. He wants
the Sixers to believe they can become an elite team.

NEW YORK (AP) - A pair of players from the Keystone State heard
their name called in last night's first round of the NFL draft.
Pitt wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin went to the Chiefs as the 26th
pick. The Jets took Temple defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson
with the 30th pick.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Arkansas junior Tina Sutej defended her Penn
Relays women's pole vault title by clearing a meet record 14 feet,
7 1/4 inches yesterday. Sutej broke the mark of 13-10 1/2 set two years
ago by LSU's Rachel Laurent. The 117th Penn Relays were delayed for
roughly an hour-and-a-half by thunderstorms.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Penguins have been knocked out of the
Stanley Cup playoffs after a 1-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Tampa's Dwayne Roloson made 36 saves for his second NHL playoff
shutout. The Penguins lost their second consecutive Game 7 and fell
to 2-6 in such deciding games at home.

MIAMI (AP) - The 76ers are headed home after being eliminated
from the NBA playoffs with a 97-91 loss to the Heat in Miami last
night. Dwyane Wade scored 26 points and Chris Bosh added 22 for
Miami. Andre Iguodala and Elton Brand each scored 22 points for
Philadelphia.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - James McDonald pitched six sharp innings
Wednesday night for his first victory of the season, and the
Pirates beat the Giants 2-0. McDonald allowed four hits and four
walks while striking out three. He lowered his ERA to 7.66 from
10.13.

PHOENIX (AP) - Jimmy Rollins homered and had three RBIs, Cole
Hamels pitched seven solid innings and the Phillies avoided a
three-game sweep with an 8-4 win over the Diamondbacks yesterday.
Shane Victorino and Ryan Howard each homered, Placido Polanco had
four of Philadelphia's 12 hits and scored three runs, and Ben
Francisco had a two-run double.

PHOENIX (AP) - Phillies ace Roy Oswalt has left the team for
Mississippi, where tornadoes have caused deaths and widespread
damage near his home. The team said Oswalt went back to make sure
his wife and daughter were safe and that there wasn't any
significant damage to his home. His parents' home was destroyed by
a tornado a year ago.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Flyers will take on the Bruins in the
second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs starting this weekend in
Philadelphia. The Bruins advanced by beating the Canadiens 4-3 in
Game 7 of their opening round season last night. This is the second
straight season the teams will meet in the conference semifinals.
Last year, the Bruins lost four straight to the Flyers after being
ahead 3-0 in the series.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Brian Boucher stopped 25 shots to help the
Philadelphia Flyers advance in the NHL playoffs with a 5-2 Game 7
win over the Buffalo Sabres last night. The Flyers raced to a quick
4-0 lead and chased Sabres goalie Ryan Miller in the third. The
Flyers now wait to find out who they'll face in the Eastern
Conference semifinals.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Penguins may have the edge in
playoff experience but Tampa Bay coach Guy Boucher says the
Lightning have already played two Game 7s. He says they'll have the
same attitude as the teams face off tonight, with the winner
advancing in the NHL playoffs.

MIAMI (AP) - The Philadelphia 76ers are in Miami try to keep
their season alive as they take on the Heat in Miami in Game 5 of
their NBA Eastern Conference playoff series. The Sixers foiled the
Heat's quest for a sweep of the series Sunday and the Heat's Dwyane
Wade says he expects the Sixers to be loose -- just like they've
been, he says, throughout the series.

PHOENIX (AP) - The Arizona Diamondbacks have put an end to Roy
Oswalt's string of 10 consecutive winning decisions, with a 7-5 win
over the Phillies last night. Oswalt lasted just three innings,
allowing five runs. The D-backs beat the Phillies and Cliff Lee in
the series opener on Monday.

PHOENIX (AP) - The Phillies say closer Jose Contreras will be
out 3-to-4 weeks with a grade one strain in his right elbow. GM
Ruben Amaro Jr. says an MRI yesterday showed the extent of the
injury. Contreras had been the closer because of Brad Lidge's
injury. Ryan Madson has now taken over the closer's role.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Darren Ford scored on a fielder's choice in
the 10th inning to help the San Francisco Giants snap a four-game
losing skid with a 3-2 win over the Pirates in Pittsburgh last
night. Charlie Morton pitched a strong game despite the loss,
allowing a run on four hits.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates have claimed outfielder Xavier
Paul off of waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers, just days after
acquiring infielder Brandon Wood from the Angels, after he had been
designated for assignment. Paul has hit .233 over three seasons
with the Dodgers.

NEW YORK (AP) - Flyers forward Ian Laperriere is one of the
three finalists for the Masterton Trophy, which honors
"perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey."
Laperriere blocked a shot with his face in the playoffs last year
but was able to come back from a concussion and fractured orbital
bone.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Steve Downie scored to snap a third-period
tie and Dwayne Roloson stopped 27 shots last night, helping the
Lightning beat Marc-Andre Fleury and the Penguins 4-2 to force a
Game 7 in their first-round playoff series. The deciding game is
tomorrow night in Pittsburgh, where Tampa Bay has already won twice
this postseason.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Brandon Wood's two-run double in his first
game for Pittsburgh was part of a four-run fourth inning and the
Pirates defeated the Nationals 4-2 in front of a sparse crowd at
soggy PNC Park yesterday. Paul Maholm retired the final 13 batters
he faced in seven strong innings as Pittsburgh made up the original
series opener that was postponed by rain on Friday.

PHOENIX (AP) - Ian Kennedy threw a three-hitter in the first
complete game of his major league career, outpitching Cliff Lee to
lift the Diamondbacks to a 4-0 victory last night that ended the
Phillies' five-game winnings streak. Kennedy struck out 10 -
including Jimmy Rollins to end the game - and walked none.

PHOENIX (AP) - Jose Contreras's strained right forearm was
examined by team doctor Michael Ciccotti in Philadelphia yesterday
and the Phillies' closer is scheduled for an MRI today. General
manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said the results of Monday's exam were
"more positive" than the first one on the 39-year-old
right-hander in San Diego.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Flyers will have their captain for Game
7. Mike Richards has avoided any discipline from the league for his
punishing hit on Buffalo center Tim Connolly. Richards will be
ready to go when the Flyers play the Sabres in Game 7 of their
first-round playoff series tonight.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers coach Mike Tomlin couldn't help but
laugh when asked if picking 31st is the worst possible scenario for
the NFL Draft. After all, the 31st pick is the penultimate
selection of every round - but having the only one lower signifies
your team is the Super Bowl champion. Tomlin pointed out that the
Number 1 pick, which traditionally goes to the worst team in the
league, is even worse.

MOMENCE, Ill. (AP) - A fire has torn through the Illinois home
of former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman and Super Bowl
champion Ted Petersen. Petersen tells The Daily Journal newspaper
in Kankakee the Sunday blaze about 60 miles south of Chicago
"could have been a lot worse." Fire fighters were able to recover
Petersen's 1979 and 1980 Super Bowl rings.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State has picked a master
rebuilder and 15-year coaching veteran to take over an entirely
different challenge - leading the school's fledgling Division I ice
hockey program. Guy Gadowsky was formally introduced yesterday by
athletic director Tim Curley. He spent the past seven seasons
coaching at Princeton.

HAMILTON, N.Y. (AP) - Temple assistant Matt Langel is the new
coach of the Colgate Raiders. Langel succeeds Emmett Davis, who was
released from his contract in mid-March after finishing the season
7-23 overall and 4-10 in the Patriot League

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Cole Hamels held punchless San Diego to four
hits in eight innings and the Phillies won 2-0 last night for their
major league-leading fifth shutout. Hamels got all the support he
needed when Ryan Howard hit a two-run triple in the third.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates are trying to fill a
hole in their lineup with a player hoping to revive his career.
Pittsburgh's game against the Washington Nationals last night was
postponed due to rain, but the Pirates claimed infielder Brandon
Wood off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Tyler Ennis scored off a rebound 5:31 into
overtime last night to give the Buffalo Sabres a 4-3 victory over
the Philadelphia Flyers and a 3-2 lead in the first-round series.
Game 6 is Sunday in Buffalo.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia right winger Jeff Carter missed
Game 5 of the Flyers' playoff series against the Buffalo Sabres
last night because of a knee injury. Carter left Game 4 after
hurting his right knee following a collision in front of the
Buffalo net with 2:20 left in the first period.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Dwyane Wade and the Miami Heat needed a day
of rest before they rev up again to try and sweep the Philadelphia
76ers. The Heat didn't have a complete day off yesterday. They shot
free throws during a light workout but otherwise skipped a
strenuous practice a day after they beat the Sixers in Game 3.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Teams looking for a quarterback could have
the Philadelphia Eagles on speed dial before the NFL draft. The
inability to trade Kevin Kolb because of the lockout doesn't mean
the Eagles aren't an attractive partner for a club that needs a
quarterback. Philadelphia holds the No. 23 pick in the first round
of the draft.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The 76ers are on the brink of elimination
from the playoffs after a 100-94 loss to the Heat last night that
gives Miami a 3-0 lead in their first-round series. Dwyane Wade had
32 points and 10 rebounds for the Heat. Elton Brand had 21 points
and 11 rebounds for the 76ers.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - The Phillies blanked the Padres 3-0 last night.
Roy Oswalt and three relievers pitched a combined four-hitter. Ben
Francisco and Brian Schneider homered for the Phillies, who've won
eight straight and 12 of 13 at Petco Park dating to the 2008
season.

MIAMI (AP) - Scott Cousins hit a grand slam, Brett Hayes added a
three-run homer and the Marlins beat the Pirates 9-5 last night to
finish a three-game sweep. The Pirates cut the lead to 9-5 in the
sixth inning before Matt Diaz grounded into an inning-ending double
play with the bases loaded. Pedro Alvarez homered, had three hits
and drove in two runs for the Buccos.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Sabres coach Lindy Ruff is tired of the
Flyers complaining. Ruff says the Flyers "are really doing a lot
of whining" following their 1-0 loss to Buffalo in Game 4 of their
first-round playoff series. Flyers captain Mike Richards says the
Sabres were allowed "to get away with murder" on the ice. That
comment triggered Ruff's complaints about the Flyers.

FLINT, Mich. (AP) - Lynn Chandnois, a special teams star for the
Steelers whose average on kickoff returns ranks second only to Gale
Sayers in NFL history, died Tuesday. He was 86. Chandnois' alma
mater of Michigan State, says he died in Flint, Michigan, Steelers
Chairman Dan Rooney called Chandnois one of the team's "great
players from the past."

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. (AP) - Police have arrested five people and
recovered some memorabilia stolen from the Mount Vernon home of
Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick. Local newspaper, the
Skagit Valley Herald, says his 2008 World Series championship ring
is still missing. The home of the 26-year-old who grew up in Mount
Vernon was burglarized in late March.

LONDON (AP) - American 400-meter runner Shana Cox will represent
Britain beginning in November after the IAAF approved her switch of

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - James Neal scored 3:38 into the second
overtime to give the Penguins a 3-2 victory over the Lightning in

Fleury stopped 29 shots - nine of them in the extra periods - to
help the Penguins take a commanding 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven
Eastern Conference matchup.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Ryan Miller made 32 saves for his second
shutout of the playoffs and the Sabres beat the Flyers 1-0 last
night to even the first-round playoff series 2-2. Jason

Philadelphia for Game 5 tomorrow night.

hits in five innings. Matt Diaz had two of Pittsburgh's five hits,
including a double.

MIAMI (AP) - The Pirates have signed right-handers Blaine Boyer

allowed to leave the team while tending to a personal matter.
Pirates manager Clint Hurdle declined to reveal any specifics of
McCutchen's situation, nor did he say when he will return to the
club.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Heat have said all the right things. The
playoffs don't start until a team wins on the road. The Philly fans
are some of the toughest around. No game is harder to win than Game
3. The Heat lead 2-0 entering tonight's Game 3 in Philly.

KENNESAW, Ga. (AP) - Penn State assistant Lewis Preston is
Kennesaw State's new basketball coach. Preston also previously
served as an assistant coach at Florida, including on the 2007
national championship team, and on Mike Brey's staff at Notre Dame.
Preston was hired by the Georgia school's new athletic director
Vaughn Williams.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Don't panic just because Penn State
coach Joe Paterno's contract expires after this season. University
President Graham Spanier says neither he nor Paterno think about
the coach's work in terms of contracts. Major college football's
winningest coach turns 85 in December and has given no indication
he plans to retire.

MIAMI (AP) - Josh Johnson allowed two hits over seven innings
and drove in two runs as the Florida Marlins downed the Pittsburgh
Pirates last night, 6-0. Paul Maholm dropped to 0-3, allowing six
runs and lasting just only 3 2-3 innings -- his shortest outing in
four starts.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ryan Braun and Casey McGehee both homered
for Milwaukee as the Brewers downed the Phillies and Roy Halladay
last night, 9-0. Jimmy Rollins had a bunt single in the first and
Shane Victorino hit a double in the third for the Phillies' only
hits of the game.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - The Penguins' Chris Kunitz and Tampa Bay's
Steve Downie have each drawn one game suspensions for hits they
delivered in Game 3 of their playoff series Monday night. The NHL
says Kunitz was disciplined for elbowing the Lightning's Simon
Gagne in the head. The suspensions will be served in tonight's Game
4.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Flyers center Danny Briere is getting booed
by the Sabres' faithful in Buffalo, four years after he left the
Sabres as a free agent and signed with the Flyers. Briere has
become a focus for fans in Buffalo as the Flyers have won two
straight to take a 2-1 lead in their playoff series. Game 4 is
tonight.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - After getting blown out by the Miami Heat in
Game 2 of their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series, the
76ers have come home -- holding a late practice. Despite being down
2-0 in the series, coach Doug Collins says he's not worrying about
winning the series. He's focused on getting one win in front of the
home crowd. Game 3 comes tomorrow night.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - BCS officials may decide within a
month whether the troubled Fiesta Bowl should keep its slot in
college football's marquee bowls. The game is under scrutiny after
an internal report last month found the bowl may have violated
election law by reimbursing employees for political donations.

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) - Former Philadelphia GM Pat Gillick took
a tour of the Baseball Hall of Fame yesterday as he gets ready for
his July induction. Gillick is one of four men who served primarily
as team builders to be elected to the hall. He'll be enshrined with
Roberto Alomar and Bert Blyleven.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Prosecutors in California will not file
charges against former Phillies outfielder Lenny Dykstra after his
arrest on suspicion of trying to buy a stolen car. Prosecutors are
asking police for more information on the probe. Dykstra has been
in jail since last week awaiting word on how the case will proceed.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A one-armed, three-wheeled robot cooked up
by engineers at the University of Pennsylvania will throw out the
ceremonial first pitch before today's Phillies-Brewers game. The
Philadelphia Inquirer reports the PhillieBot appearance has been in
the making for a month and a half.

MIAMI (AP) - LeBron James scored 29 points, Chris Bosh had his
second straight double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds, and
the Heat never trailed in beating the 76ers 94-73 last night in
Game 2 of their Eastern Conference first-round series. Thaddeus
Young scored 18 points and Evan Turner added 15 for the 76ers,
whose starters were outscored 76-29 by the Heat's first-string.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Brian Boucher stopped 35 shots as the
Flyers new starting goalie in helping Philadelphia grab a
first-round playoff series lead with a 4-2 win over the Sabres last
night. Danny Briere and Nikolay Zherdev keyed the victory by
scoring second-period goals as Philadelphia bounced back with two
straight wins after a 1-0 series-opening loss yesterday.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Tyler Kennedy put Pittsburgh ahead early in
the third period and Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 25 shots last night,
helping the Penguins hold off the Lightning 3-2. Maxime Talbot and
Arron Asham also scored for the Penguins, who took a 2-1 lead in
their first-round Eastern Conference best-of-seven playoff series
and regained home-ice advantage.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ryan Braun drove in the go-ahead run with a
sacrifice fly in the 12th inning and the Brewers beat the Phillies
6-3 last night. The NL East-leading Phillies rallied against closer
John Axford in the ninth, tying it at 3 on pinch-hitter Pete Orr's
RBI single with one out. But the Brewers held on and snapped a
three-game losing streak.

CINCINNATI (AP) - Andrew McCutchen doubled home two runs as part
of Pittsburgh's biggest offensive showing this season, and the
Pirates took advantage of another slow-starting Cincinnati pitcher,
beating the Reds 9-3 last night. The Pirates scored three runs in
the first off left-hander Travis Wood. Kevin Correia gave up four
hits during his second career complete game.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Suspended Penn State basketball guard
Taran Buie will transfer following a tumultuous freshman year.
Coach Ed DeChellis says he has granted Buie a release from his
scholarship. Buie had several off-court problems. He was suspended

CINCINNATI (AP) - Andrew McCutchen opened the game with a homer
against slow-starting Edinson Volquez, then singled home the
tiebreaking run in the eighth inning yesterday, rallying the
Pirates to a 7-6 win over the Reds. McCutchen and Jose Tabata
started the game with back-to-back homers - only the third time
that's happened in Pirates history.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Carlos Ruiz hit the go-ahead sacrifice fly
in the eighth inning after an error by the Marlins defense, and the
Phillies beat Florida 3-2 yesterday. Ryan Madson tossed a scoreless
eighth after taking over for Cole Hamels, and Jose Contreras
survived a rocky ninth inning for his third save in as many
chances.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Flyers coach Peter Laviolette isn't saying
which goalie - Brian Boucher or Sergei Bobrovsky - will start Game
3 of their first-round playoff series at Buffalo tonight.
Laviolette repeatedly stuck to his policy of not discussing
potential lineup changes after practice yesterday.

BRANDON, Fla. (AP) - A puzzling scoring slump for Tampa Bay
Lightning All-Star Steven Stamkos has extended into the playoffs.
The 21-year-old All-Star was second in the NHL with 45 goals during
the regular season. But he has just five in his past 30 games and
has only gotten off two shots in the first two games of his team's
opening round series against the Penguins.

MIAMI (AP) - Dwyane Wade did not practice with the Miami Heat on
Sunday because of migraine symptoms, a problem he's battled for
years. His status is unclear for Game 2 tonight of Miami's
first-round series against the 76ers. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra
says Wade was getting rest and taking medication, though he
cautions that it's "too soon" to know if Wade will be able to
participate in shootaround this morning.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - A powerful one-two punch of former top
prep prospects from Connecticut could give Penn State a big boost
this fall. Tailback Silas Redd and linebacker Khairi Fortt both
left New England last year to sign on with coach Joe Paterno. Now
they're hoping their bigger roles in spring practice, which ended
Saturday, helps give them an edge for expanded roles when the
Nittany Lions reconvene in August for preseason camp.

Holiday led the Sixers with 21 points. Andres Nocioni and Evan
Turner each scored 18. The Sixers are slumping at the wrong time as
they get set to play Miami in the playoffs.

WASHINGTON (AP) - At his dominant best until a shaky ninth
inning, Roy Halladay held on to throw his first complete game of
2011, leading the Phillies past the Nationals 3-2 last night.
Through eight shutout innings, Halladay allowed only a pair of
singles. In the ninth, Halladay allowed four hits before throwing
six strikes in a row to fan pinch-hitter Matt Stairs and Ivan
Rodriguez to end the game.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Milwaukee Brewers blanked the Pirates 6-0
last night. Pittsburgh starter Kevin Correia (2-1) took a no-hitter
into the sixth, but his outing quickly unraveled from there. The
Pirates have lost four of five at home after beginning the season
by winning consecutive road series for the first time since 2007.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Flyers begin their defense of the
Eastern Conference title when they open the playoffs against the
Buffalo Sabres at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. The
Flyers led the conference for most of the season before slipping to
second place down the stretch.

VOORHEES, N.J (AP) -Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger is a gameday
decision for Game 1 against the Buffalo Sabres. Flyers captain Mike
Richards also skipped practice the day before the postseason
opener.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State leading receiver Derek Moye
is recovering from a concussion but could play in Saturday's
Blue-White game to wrap up spring practice. Moye says he's
returning to non-contact drills, and that there was a chance he
could play in Saturday's scrimmage.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Joe Paterno, with a record 401 wins
entering his 45th year as the head coach at Penn State, stumbled
yesterday when talking about the Big Ten's expansion and
two-division format this fall. He referred to the conference as the
Big 12 before laughing and pointing out that he was at least
partially right since the Big Ten now has a dozen teams.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Penn State is a bit of an underdog
entering this weekend's NCAA men's gymnastics meet at Ohio State.
Michigan is the defending champion and Oklahoma is the team to
beat. Oklahoma comes in with the highest qualifying score.
Stanford, California, Illinois, Penn State and Michigan round out
the top six coming in.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Dwight Howard returned from suspension to
score 19 points, grab 13 rebounds and lead the Magic to a 95-85 win
over the 76ers last night. Howard served an NBA suspension Sunday
after picking up his 18th technical foul. Elton Brand led the
Sixers with 22 points. Philadelphia is stuck on 41 wins and needs
one in tomorrow's finale for its first winning record since
2004-05.

CHOUDRANT, La. (AP) - Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw
says he's feeling the effects of numerous concussions sustained
during his NFL career. The 62-year-old Steelers legend says he's
been having short-term memory loss as well as loss of hand-eye
coordination. He also says he is undergoing rehabilitation for
those ailments.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The question that everyone wants to know as
the Penguins prepare to take on the Lightning in the first round of
the Stanley Cup playoffs is whether injured captain Sidney Crosby
return to the ice. Considering he still hasn't been cleared for
contact, it would seem unlikely that Crosby, who missed 41 games
with a concussion, will play. But the Lightning are preparing for
him, one way or the other.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - The Buffalo Sabres enter the NHL postseason
with some lingering injury issues as they prepare to take on the
Flyers. The injury bug didn't slow Buffalo down as they ended the
regular season. They finished their campaign with only one
regulation loss in their last 13 games.

VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) - Villanova University will not take a vote
scheduled for this week that would decide if the football program
would move to the Big East Conference. The university has released
a statement that says the Big East needs more time to do its due
diligence regarding Villanova's potential football membership.

NEW YORK (AP) - Phillies minor league left-hander Ryan Sasaki
has been suspended for 50 games following a positive drug test
under baseball's minor league drug program. The commissioner's
office says Sasaki had an elevated testosterone/epitestosterone
ratio. Sasaki is on the roster of the Gulf Coast League Phillies.

ATLANTA (AP) - The Penguins closed the regular season with a 5-2
victory Sunday over the already-eliminated Atlanta Thrashers. Tyler
Kennedy scored the first of Pittsburgh's four second-period goals
and reserve goalie Brent Johnson won his fourth straight decision.
Pascal Dupuis, Michael Rupp and rookie Mark Letestu also scored in
the second period. Late in the third, Mike Comrie scored an
empty-net goal to make it 5-1.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Flyers adjusted their championship caps,
pulled on the T-shirts and prepared to celebrate. Winning their
first Atlantic Division title in seven years was a fun way to end
the season and forget about the sorry month that preceded the
clincher. The Flyers look to turn things around in the playoff when
they meet the Buffalo Sabres this week.

ATLANTA (AP) - Cole Hamels combined with two relievers on a
five-hitter and Shane Victorino capped a big series with three
hits, including his first homer, to lead the Phillies past the
Braves 3-0 yesterday. Hamels rebounded after giving up six runs in
2-plus innings of a 7-1 home loss to the Mets last Tuesday.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Colorado kept up its strong start with a 6-5
win over the Pirates yesterday, giving the Rockies three wins in
four games of their first road series this season. Lyle Overbay had
two RBIs and Jose Tabata extended his hitting streak to 10 games
for the Pirates, who are back to .500 after opening the season by
winning four of six on the road

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates have placed starter Ross Ohlendorf
on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right shoulder.
Ohlendorf removed himself from Friday night's game against Colorado
in the third inning when he felt discomfort in the same area of his
shoulder that landed him on the 60-day DL to end last season. To
take Ohlendorf's spot, the club recalled right-hander Daniel
McCutchen from Triple-A Indianapolis.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Roy Halladay pitched seven sharp innings for
his first win of the season, Wilson Valdez had a career-high four
hits, and the Phillies beat the Mets 11-0 yesterday. Halladay
allowed six hits and struck out seven.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phillies closer Brad Lidge says he's still
hoping to return by the All-Star break. Lidge has been sidelined
since spring training with a strained right rotator cuff. When
Lidge was shut down last month, the team said he wouldn't pick up a
baseball for three to six weeks.

ATLANTA (AP) - Fans eager to see how the Braves compare with the
four-time defending NL East champion Phillies are getting a marquee
matchup for Atlanta's home opener. In a pairing of two of the NL's
top starting pitchers, Philadelphia's Cliff Lee will face Atlanta's
Tim Hudson tonight. Each won his first start this season.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Rockies beat Pittsburgh 7-1 yesterday to
wreck the Pirates' home opener under new manager Clint Hurdle. Troy
Tulowitzki connected for his third homer in the fourth off Paul
Maholm (0-1) to make it 3-1 as the Rockies won their fourth
straight. Andrew McCutchen drove in Pittsburgh's only run.

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - The Penguins and Islanders meet tonight
in a rematch of a bruising battle two months ago. The Atlantic
Division rivals staged one of the most penalty- and fight-filled
games they or the NHL has ever seen. Whether the bad blood still
exists when the Penguins return to Long Island on Friday night
remains to be seen.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Flyers lost their grip on the top seed
in the East. But they hope time hasn't run out on them to find a
winning formula before the playoffs. Philadelphia fell hard down
the stretch and takes a four-game losing streak into last night's
game at Buffalo. The skid allowed Washington to grab the top spot
in the Eastern Conference.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ben Roethlisberger is speaking publicly for
the first time about his engagement and upcoming wedding to a woman
he met at training camp in 2005. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette the
woman is Ashley Harlan, a 26-year-old physician's assistant who
lives in New Castle, about 45 miles northwest of Pittsburgh.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pascal Dupuis had two goals and the Penguins
moved closer to clinching home-ice advantage in the first round of
the playoffs with a 4-2 win over the Devils last night. Jordan
Staal and Chris Kunitz also scored for the Penguins, who won their
regular season home finale to move three points ahead of
fifth-place Tampa Bay in the Eastern Conference standings with two
games to play.

OTTAWA (AP) - Jason Spezza had a goal and three assists to lead
the Senators to a 5-2 victory over the slumping Flyers last night.
Mike Richards scored both goals for the Flyers, who failed to
clinch the Atlantic Division title. Philadelphia lost its fourth
straight and fifth in the last six.

BOSTON (AP) - Rajon Rondo scored 16 points with 13 assists and
the Celtics moved into a tie for the Number 2 seed in the Eastern
Conference by beating the 76ers 99-82 last night. Reserve Evan
Turner scored 21 for the Sixers, who clinched a playoff berth on
Friday but could still finish anywhere from fifth to seventh in the
East.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Albert Pujols had the tying and go-ahead RBIs
and Kyle McClellan rebounded from a shaky beginning to pitch well
in his first career start as the Cardinals beat the Pirates 3-2
last night. Pujols hasn't seemed comfortable at the plate in the
opening homestand, grounding into three double plays in one game
and entering 2 for 16 with a solo homer.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Chris Young pitched effectively into the
sixth inning and had two of his career-high three hits during a
six-run third, helping the Mets beat the Phillies 7-1 last night.
The four-time NL East champion Phillies failed to start 4-0 for the
first time since 1915. Cole Hamels suffered through the
second-worst start of his career, becoming the first of
Philadelphia's four aces to lose this season.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Flyers placed goaltender Michael
Leighton on re-entry waivers on Tuesday with the hope that he can
rejoin Philadelphia's postseason roster. General manager Paul
Holmgren confirmed the move, which allows a 24-hour period for
other teams to claim him at half of his remaining contract, while
the Flyers would pay the other half. If he is unclaimed by noon
today, he would be able to join the Flyers again.

NEW YORK (AP) - Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe will renew their
rivalry when they will square off for the first time in 10 years at
a World Team Tennis match. Connors will play for the Philadelphia
Freedoms against McEnroe's New York Sportimes on July 14th at
Randall's Island in Manhattan. The Sportimes say they also will
play doubles.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Charlie Morton won his first road game since
the end of 2009 in a 47-degree chill and the Pirates stunned Kyle
Lohse with a four-run sixth inning in a 4-3 victory last night.
Lohse issued his first walk all year, then allowed Neil Walker's
two-run double and Andrew McCutchen's second homer to put
Pittsburgh ahead 4-1.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Penguins signed free-agent forward Brian
Gibbons to a two-year, entry-level contract yesterday. In his final
season at Boston College, Gibbons had 18 goals and 51 points in 39
games. He was an assistant captain for the Eagles, and made the
All-Hockey East second team.

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. (AP) - Police are searching for suspects who
burglarized the Mount Vernon, Washington, home of Phillies pitcher
Kyle Kendrick and took his World Series ring. Police say the
thieves also took other valuable items. He says Kendrick and his
family were not home at the time of the burglary, which occurred in
late March.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - During an injury-filled spring at Penn
State, it's easy to overlook the linebacker running around without
the familiar black brace on his right knee. Michael Mauti has moved
to middle linebacker this spring. Another likely starter at
linebacker, Nathan Stupar, has been limited by a sore left
hamstring.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Players from Philadelphia-area schools
have swept player-of-the-year honors in all four PIAA
classifications more than a week after Philly teams swept all four
boys state basketball titles. Overall, Philadelphia-area players
claimed 35 of 80 spots available on the all-state basketball team
as selected by a panel of Pennsylvania sports writers.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Towson University has hired Pittsburgh
assistant Pat Skerry as its new coach. Skerry, who will be
introduced in a campus press conference on Tuesday, replaces Pat
Kennedy, who resigned last month after seven seasons. The Tigers
went 0-18 in the Colonial Athletic Association this year.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Martin St. Louis scored his 30th goal of the
season, helping the Lightning clinch their first playoff berth
since 2007 with a 2-1 victory over the Penguins last night.
Pittsburgh, which had won its previous four road games, got a goal
from Michael Rupp.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Flyers were blanked 1-0 last night
against the Thrashers. Atlanta's Nik Antropov scored the only goal,
and goalie Chris Mason stopped 43 shots. Atlanta went 3-1 vs.
Philadelphia this season.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Roy Halladay and the rest of the
Philadelphia Phillies are ready to get the most anticipated season
in franchise history started. Expectations are high this year. So
high, in fact, that anything less than a World Series title won't
be considered a success. Halladay takes the mound for the Phils
today in the opener against Houston.

CHICAGO (AP) - A forecast for rain and maybe some snow flurries
greets the Pirates during their opener in Chicago against the Cubs
today. Pirates manager Clint Hurdle's remedy for the conditions is
to go play and figure it out. He said everyone would prefer it to
be 75 or 80 and eventually it will be - in June.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -Penguins center Sidney Crosby has resumed
skating with his teammates. Crosby has been out since January with
a concussion. He took part in the no-contact game-day skate
yesterday as Pittsburgh prepared for its matchup later in the day
against Tampa Bay.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Former Penn State defensive
coordinator Jerry Sandusky is being investigated by a state grand
jury on allegations he indecently assaulted a teenage boy. The
Harrisburg Patriot-News reports a grand jury has been meeting in
Harrisburg for 18 months to hear the allegations made by a
15-year-old boy from Clinton County in 2009. Sandusky hasn't been
charge and denies the allegations.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - The Penn State quarterback job is open
again as the team conducts spring practices. Matt McGloin and Rob
Bolden split time at the position last year and are both returning.
The other two candidates in the quarterback derby are rising junior
Kevin Newsome and redshirt freshman Paul Jones, another touted
prospect.
