PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Matt Cain outdueled Cole Hamels to lead the
San Francisco Giants to a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies
last night. The NL West-leading Giants won for the third time in
four games.

CINCINNATI (AP) - Carlos Beltran has accepted a trade to the San
Francisco Giants. The New York Mets had received a 24-hour window
to negotiate with the All-Star outfielder about waiving his
no-trade clause. Shortly before an 8-2 win over the Reds last
night, Beltran arrived in the clubhouse and told his teammates he
was on his way to join the Giants in Philadelphia.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Giants right-hander Tim Lincecum is still
not ready to pitch for San Francisco. He was scratched from his
scheduled start Tuesday against the Philadelphia Phillies because
of the flu. Matt Cain started against the Phils yesterday. The
Giants haven't named a starter for today's finale. Manager Bruce
Bochy says he's hopeful Lincecum can gain back his strength and
head to the hill.

ATLANTA (AP) - David Ross hit a bases-loaded single in the 10th
inning and the Atlanta Braves beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 last
night for their second straight victory in extra innings. Atlanta
and Pittsburgh played 19 innings Tuesday night before Julio Lugo
scored the winning run on a controversial call at the plate that
umpire Jerry Meals later acknowledged was incorrect.

ATLANTA (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed infielder
Chase d'Arnaud on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured right
little finger. Right-hander Chris Leroux was recalled from Triple-A
Indianapolis yesterday to take his spot on the roster.

ATLANTA (AP) - Major League Baseball and umpire Jerry Meals
agree Meals made the wrong call in Atlanta's 4-3, 19-inning win
over Pittsburgh early yesterday morning. Meals ruled Pittsburgh
catcher Mike McKenry failed to tag Atlanta's Julio Lugo in the
bottom of the 19th, allowing Lugo to score the winning run. Replays
showed McKenry clearly tagging Lugo well before Lugo got to the
plate.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - Andy Reid plans to ease his players into
practice once the Philadelphia Eagles take the field to start
training camp. The defending NFC East champions will open with a
walkthrough this morning and won't put pads on until Sunday.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to
terms with eight of their 11 draft picks, giving them each
four-year deals. All but first-round pick Danny Watkins and a pair
of seventh-round picks agreed to contracts yesterday, when players
were due to report to training camp.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ike Taylor is back with the Pittsburgh
Steelers. How many of the defending AFC champions' free agents will
join the veteran cornerback in training camp remains to be seen.
Taylor confirmed the deal on his Twitter page yesterday morning.

HARRISON, N.J. (AP) - Manchester United put on another show
during its tour of the United States with a 4-0 victory over the
MLS All Stars last night. Wayne Rooney set up two goals with
magnificent passes and Ji-Sung Park danced around a defender for
another.

HARRISON, N.J. (AP) - Manchester United striker Javier
'Chicharito' Hernandez missed last night's match against the MLS
All-Stars after being hospitalized for a mild concussion sustained
during a training session. According to a statement released by the
English Premier League champions, the 23-year-old Mexican star will
also likely miss a match against Barcelona Saturday in Maryland.

NEW YORK (AP) - A person with knowledge of the plans says NBA
owners and players will resume talks toward a new collective
bargaining agreement Monday, a month after the lockout started.
Though representatives from the sides have been talking and met on
multiple occasions since July 1st, this will be the first meeting
to include Commissioner David Stern, union executive director Billy
Hunter, owners and players.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) - When Mike Richards learned
Philadelphia had traded him to the Los Angeles Kings last month,
the Flyers captain was confused and upset about leaving. One month
after the deal, the star center is enjoying life in Los Angeles.
Richards worked out yesterday with several Kings, who appear to be
a burgeoning powerhouse after general manager Dean Lombardi's
offseason moves.

ATLANTA (AP) - Julio Lugo scored from third base on a contested
play at the plate, giving the Atlanta Braves a 4-3 win in 19
innings over the Pittsburgh Pirates early this morning. The game
ended just before 2 a.m. It was the longest in Turner Field history
and matched the longest in the major leagues this season.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies beat the San
Francisco Giants 7-2 last night in a matchup of the NL's top teams.
Rookie right-hander Vance Worley threw a three-hitter and Chase
Utley hit an inside-the-park homer to lead the Phils to victory.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - San Francisco Giants bench coach Ron Wotus
served a one-game suspension against the Phillies yesterday. Major
League Baseball says his "inappropriate actions" during a
fourth-inning ejection Saturday against Milwaukee at AT&T Park led
to the punishment. He came onto the field after being tossed.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - San Francisco Giants right-hander Tim
Lincecum was scratched from his scheduled start yesterday against
the Philadelphia Phillies because of the flu. The two-time NL Cy
Young Award winner was replaced by left-hander Barry Zito, who was
originally scheduled to start today's game.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - One day after the NFL and its players' union
announced the end of the lockout, a handful of Pittsburgh Steelers
players arrived at the team's complex on the city's South Side.
Second-year receiver Emmanuel Sanders was one of them. He says, "I
am just happy to be back in the facility, and be around the coaches
and be around the team."

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick
says he's focused on football and not worried yet about reaching a
new contract. The Eagles designated Vick their franchise player
before the lockout and now have until September 20th to sign him to
a multiyear contract or extension. He's said he wants to stay with
the Eagles. Meanwhile, today is the first day of training camp for
the birds.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles have signed rookie
free-agent running back Noel Devine. A former standout at West
Virginia, the 5-foot-8, 170-pound Devine ran for 4,315 yards and 29
touchdowns on 728 carries as a Mountaineer.

NEW YORK (AP) - Commissioner Roger Goodell says all NFL
personnel will be reimbursed for salary reductions during the
lockout. Goodell sent an email yesterday to employees of the
league, NFL Films, NFL Network and NFL.com telling them they'll
receive all lost wages from the work stoppage. All salaries will be
restored to previous levels.

NEW YORK (AP) - With the NFL lockout over, fans seems ready to
forgive and fill up stadiums. Ticketmaster says sales on its NFL
Ticket Exchange were up 332 percent Monday from the day before.
They were up 294 percent from the previous Monday.

NEW YORK (AP) - With its players locked out, the NBA has
postponed its rookie transition program scheduled for August
9th-11th. The event provides first-year players with information to
help prepare them for their futures.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Penguins have signed forward Jason
Williams to a one-year contract, worth $600,000. Williams is a
10-year NHL veteran. He played in 27 games with Dallas last season,
scoring five points. He's a 5-foot-11, 192-pound right wing, who's
also played for Detroit, Chicago, Columbus, and Atlanta.

HARRISON, N.J. (AP) - The MLS All Stars will face a daunting
task against Manchester United in the league's annual mid-season
classic tonight at Red Bull Arena. The MLS will be fielding a team
that's practiced together for roughly two hours and will be missing
Galaxy forward Landon Donovan and midfielder Bred Shea.

DETROIT (AP) - Toledo is the preseason favorite to win the
Mid-American Conference championship. The Rockets were tabbed to
win the West division while defending champion Miami of Ohio was
narrowly picked to win the East over Ohio. The poll of media
covering the MAC was announced yesterday during the conference's
media day in Detroit.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia Eagles' Michael Vick has lost
an endorsement deal. Earlier this month, Vick signed a five-year
agreement with Fuse Science to promote its line of sports nutrition
products. But its parent company terminated the deal after

the Philadelphia Phillies to a 5-3 win over the San Diego Padres
yesterday. Raul Ibanez and Carlos Ruiz each had two RBIs to lead
the Phils to their fifth straight win.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Roy
Oswalt is scheduled to start a rehab assignment Wednesday for

before yesterday's game against the San Diego Padres in
Philadelphia.

NEW YORK (AP) - A vote on a settlement to the lockout is what
every NFL fan wants. Nobody is sure when that might happen. The
players' executive committee will meet today in Washington after
lawyers have worked through the weekend on issues that are holding
up an agreement with the owners. Several people with knowledge of
the meeting tell The Associated Press no vote to recommend a deal
is certain today.

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. (AP) - A person familiar with the negotiations
tells The Associated Press players didn't vote yesterday on a
tentative agreement to end the NFL lockout because they hadn't seen
the full proposal approved by owners. Owners overwhelmingly voted
for a tentative agreement earlier yesterday, pending an OK from the
players, who later held a conference call to discuss the proposal.
That call ended without a vote.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Red-hot Jimmy Rollins is leading the

three saves while pitching for Triple-A Lehigh Valley in the
Philadelphia Phillies' organization earlier this year.

a roll. The 28-year-old right-hander is 8-5 with a 2.28 ERA, second

become one of the most efficient pitchers in the league.

began to clear their benches after halftime, the offensive pace
picked up.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - As expected, the Philadelphia Phillies are

in part, to excellent pitching. Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee and Cole
Hamels have all helped the Phils overcome a slew of injuries and a
mediocre offense.

NEW YORK (AP) - Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Drew Brees say
"it is time" for NFL owners and players to wrap up negotiations

The Associated Press yesterday, the quarterbacks say they think
"the overall proposal made by the players is fair for both sides
and it is time to get this deal done."

NEW YORK (AP) - Heavily fined Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker
James Harrison calls NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell a "crook" and
a "devil," among other insults, in a magazine article. The 2008

Halladay and his relief stayed in control and the National League

want to be the guy who can carry this team." He made the
statements yesterday during a conference call.

school is scheduled to open in September in Detroit.

made inaccurate financial projections before. This comes a day
after a report questioned whether the league indeed lost money two

losses should have been much less than the league said.
