WASHINGTON (AP) - The Phillies are NL East champions once again.
The Phils won their fourth straight division title last night with
an 8-0 clinching victory over the Washington Nationals. Ace Roy
Halladay earned his 21st win with his fourth shutout and ninth
complete game and Jayson Werth drove in four runs.
ST. LOUIS (AP) - The Cardinals' Matt Holliday homered and drove
in three runs as St. Louis beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-4 last
night, staying in the NL Central race for at least one more day. A
Cardinals loss would have clinched the division for Cincinnati. The
Reds were idle, and their magic number remained at one going into
tonight's home game against Houston.
OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) - Ravens running back Ray Rice has a
bruised knee that has raised questions about his availability in
this week's AFC North showdown against the undefeated Pittsburgh
Steelers. Rice had an MRI on Monday after being forced out of
Baltimore's 24-17 win over Cleveland on Sunday. Coach John Harbaugh
says that the examination revealed a "significant contusion."
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Elton Brand looked lean at about 255 pounds
on the 76ers media day. Andre Iguodala has a gold medal from the
world championships, a rare sign of success for a player who's
spent his entire career with in Philadelphia. The Sixers are
undergoing a radical overhaul with top-draft Evan Turner at guard
and Doug Collins on the bench as coach.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Nobody can accuse Pittsburgh coach Dave
Wannstedt of panicking following the Panthers' worst loss at home
in nine seasons. Wannstedt has decided against making major changes
despite the 31-3 defeat to Number 16 Miami, which means the
unproductive Tino Sunseri remains the starting quarterback and all
11 defensive starters will stay in the lineup Saturday against
Florida International.
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Little League says a pilot
program introduced this past season for 12- and 13-year-old players
with a 50-foot pitching distance and 70-foot base paths was so
well-received that local leagues will have the option to start a
"50-70" league for 11- and 12-year-olds next season. The effort
could help east the transition for youngsters to larger fields.
