WASHINGTON (AP) - The Phillies are NL East champions once again.
The Phils won their fourth straight division title last night with
an 8-0 clinching victory over the Washington Nationals. Ace Roy
Halladay earned his 21st win with his fourth shutout and ninth
complete game and Jayson Werth drove in four runs.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - The Cardinals' Matt Holliday homered and drove
in three runs as St. Louis beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-4 last
night, staying in the NL Central race for at least one more day. A
Cardinals loss would have clinched the division for Cincinnati. The
Reds were idle, and their magic number remained at one going into
tonight's home game against Houston.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) - Ravens running back Ray Rice has a
bruised knee that has raised questions about his availability in
this week's AFC North showdown against the undefeated Pittsburgh
Steelers. Rice had an MRI on Monday after being forced out of
Baltimore's 24-17 win over Cleveland on Sunday. Coach John Harbaugh
says that the examination revealed a "significant contusion."

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Elton Brand looked lean at about 255 pounds
on the 76ers media day. Andre Iguodala has a gold medal from the
world championships, a rare sign of success for a player who's
spent his entire career with in Philadelphia. The Sixers are
undergoing a radical overhaul with top-draft Evan Turner at guard
and Doug Collins on the bench as coach.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Nobody can accuse Pittsburgh coach Dave
Wannstedt of panicking following the Panthers' worst loss at home
in nine seasons. Wannstedt has decided against making major changes
despite the 31-3 defeat to Number 16 Miami, which means the
unproductive Tino Sunseri remains the starting quarterback and all
11 defensive starters will stay in the lineup Saturday against
Florida International.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Little League says a pilot
program introduced this past season for 12- and 13-year-old players
with a 50-foot pitching distance and 70-foot base paths was so
well-received that local leagues will have the option to start a
"50-70" league for 11- and 12-year-olds next season. The effort
could help east the transition for youngsters to larger fields.

Travis Sparks has a report from the Pennsylvania Derby, held Saturday:

PA DERBY RECAP

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies have become the
first National League team to clinch a playoff spot this year. The
two-time defending NL champions were assured at least a wild-card
spot when San Diego lost to Cincinnati yesterday. The Phillies'
magic number for winning the NL East remained at one after their
7-3 loss to the New York Mets.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Carlos Beltran hit a pair of homers, David
Wright also connected and the New York Mets beat Philadelphia 7-3,
preventing the Phillies from clinching their fourth straight NL
East title at home. The Phillies will finish the season on the road
with three games at Washington and three at Atlanta.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Paul Maholm limited Houston to one run over
seven innings to win consecutive starts for the first time all
season. The Pittsburgh Pirates turned catcher Jason Castro's
throwing error into their first two runs during a 9-3 victory over
the Astros.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Charlie Batch threw for 186 yards and two
long touchdowns to Mike Wallace in the 35-year-old quarterback's
first start in nearly three years, helping the Steelers remain
unbeaten with a 38-13 rout of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The
Steelers improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2007.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Michael Vick threw three touchdown
passes, ran for another score and the Philadelphia Eagles defeated
the Jacksonville Jaguars 28-3. Vick completed 17 of 31 passes for
291 yards, mostly staying in the pocket and picking apart
Jacksonville's beleaguered secondary.

HAYWARD, Calif. (AP) - Christine Sinclair had two goals, Marta
added a goal and two assists and the FC Gold Pride defeated the
Philadelphia Independence 4-0 to win the Women's Professional
Soccer championship. Kandace Wilson also scored for the Pride, who
won their first WPS title in the league's second season.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State enters Big Ten play having
answered two nagging questions. Tailback Evan Royster silenced
critics after gaining a career-best 187 yards in a 22-13 win
Saturday against Temple for the 22nd-ranked Nittany Lions. The
defense also regained its swagger, shutting down the resurgent Owls
with a furious second-half performance.

BRIDGEHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) - Defending champion Nathan Smith,
Scott Harvey and Tim Hogarth shared medalist honors in the U.S.
Mid-Amateur Championship with 36-hole, stroke-play totals of
even-par 144. Smith, the 32-year-old Pittsburgh player who also won
the event in 2003, shot an even-par 72 in windy conditions at The
Bridge in New York.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia's Roy Oswalt and a pair of
relievers combined on a one-hitter and the NL East-leading Phillies
beat Atlanta 1-0 last night for their 10th straight win, increasing
their bulge over the Braves to six games. The Phillies' magic
number for clinching their fourth straight division title now
stands at four.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh's Charlie Morton pitched
effectively over six innings to win for the first time in 4 1/2 months
as the Pirates extended the St. Louis Cardinals' late-season
collapse by winning 11-6 last night. John Bowker homered among
three hits as the Pirates won their fifth straight.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Sidney Crosby had a goal and an assist before
sitting out the third period because of a sore hip flexor and the
Penguins won the first hockey game at Consol Energy Center, beating
the Detroit Red Wings 5-1 last night in preseason play.
Pittsburgh's Mike Comrie scored the first goal in the new building,
connecting at 1:21 of the first period.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The forgotten quarterback is now the
Pittsburgh Steelers' starter. Charlie Batch will be the starter
Sunday at Tampa Bay - his first NFL start since 2007. Coach Mike
Tomlin picked Batch over Byron Leftwich, who is recovering from a
sprained knee ligament. Dennis Dixon started the first two games,
but he underwent knee surgery yesterday and is out indefinitely.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - All-Pro fullback Leonard Weaver, who
sustained a season-ending injury in Philadelphia's loss to Green
Bay in Week 1, has had surgery on his left knee. Orthopedist James
Andrews performed the surgery Tuesday in Alabama to torn ligaments
in Weaver's knee.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Jacksonville Jaguars running back
Maurice Jones-Drew believes he's on the verge of a breakout game.
It might even come Sunday against Philadelphia. Jones-Drew says he
hopes to "pop" soon "for my sanity."

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) - The Minnesota Vikings have signed
free agent receiver Hank Baskett to a one-year deal. Baskett
practiced with the team on yesterday, one day after being released
from the Philadelphia Eagles. He comes to a team in desperate need
of healthy receivers.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Seven years later, Pitt is still trying to
catch Miami. The Panthers never reached the Hurricanes' level when
the two competed annually in a one-sided Big East Conference
rivalry in which Miami won the final six games played. The gap has
closed somewhat since Miami left the Big East to join the Atlantic
Coast Conference in 2004, but not entirely.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - After three home victories, Temple may
get a true test of just how far the football program has come with
this weekend's game against Number 23 Penn State. This Pennsylvania
rivalry is decidedly tilted in the Nittany Lions' favor. Temple
hasn't beaten Penn State since 1941.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Roy Halladay has become Philadelphia's first
20-game winner in 28 years and the Phillies increased their lead in
the NL East to five games with their ninth straight win, 5-3 over
the Atlanta Braves last night. Halladay allowed three runs and
seven hits in seven innings. Jayson Werth hit a three-run homer for
the Phillies.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh's Paul Maholm became the latest
slumping pitcher to shut down the fast-fading St. Louis Cardinals
as the Pirates won their season-high fourth in a row 5-2 last
night. The Pirates remain two losses way from their first 100-loss
season since 2001, but are 4-0 on a homestand that began with a
three-game sweep of Arizona.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia's Mike Richards scored a
shootout goal in the fourth round, lifting the Flyers to a 4-3 win
over the New Jersey Devils last night in the first preseason game
for both teams. The seventh-seeded Flyers eliminated the
second-seeded Devils in the first round of last season's playoffs.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Eagles coach Andy Reid says Michael Vick
will be the team's starting quarterback. Reid made the decision
yesterday, a day after saying Kevin Kolb would start Sunday at
Jacksonville. Kolb missed the last six quarters because of a
concussion, and Vick played well in his absence.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles have signed running
back Joique Bell off the Buffalo Bills' practice squad. Wide
receiver Hank Baskett was released to make room for Bell, who
originally signed as a rookie free agent with the Bills. Bell had
more than 6,700 yards rushing and 88 touchdowns at Wayne State.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dennis Dixon
will have left knee surgery today and is out indefinitely, meaning
Byron Leftwich or Charlie Batch will start Sunday at Tampa Bay.
Leftwich sat out the first two games with a sprained left knee from
the final preseason game.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Coach Joe Paterno has increased the
intensity at Penn State practice. It began last week after coaches
were disappointed with the 21-point loss at Alabama, and the
23rd-ranked Nittany Lions responded with a shutout of Kent State.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Cole Hamels had another outstanding outing,
and the Phillies took advantage of an error by Jason Heyward to
beat the Atlanta Braves 3-1 last night, increasing their lead in
the NL East to four games. The two-time NL champion Phillies won
their eighth straight game and improved to 42-15 since July 21st,
when they trailed the Braves by seven games.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Atlanta left fielder Matt Diaz helped tackle
a costumed fan who ran onto the field and briefly eluded security
guards during the Phillies game at Citizens Bank Park last night.
The fan jogged onto the field in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Diaz banged his knee into the back of the fan's knee, knocking him
down, and getting an ovation from the Philly crowd.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Steelers aren't saying yet how long
quarterback Dennis Dixon will be out with a left knee injury, a
problem that typically sidelines a player for multiple games. Dixon
was examined by doctors yesterday and might have additional tests
today. He might not return before Roethlisberger's four-game
suspension ends.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Quarterback Byron Leftwich has re-signed with
the Pittsburgh Steelers after being released to create a roster
spot for a defensive lineman. Leftwich was let go Saturday in a
procedural move so Steve McLendon could be activated for the
Tennessee game. He could start Sunday's game at Tampa Bay.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Eagles coach Andy Reid says Kevin Kolb will
be the starting quarterback at Jacksonville on Sunday, despite a
pair of impressive performances by fill-in Michael Vick. Kolb
missed the second half of a season-opening loss to Green Bay and
Sunday's win over Detroit because of a concussion.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Penguins have signed general manager Ray
Shero to a five-year contract extension that runs through the
2015-16 season. Shero's current five-year contract would have
expired at the end of this season. The Penguins have twice played
for the Stanley Cup and won it once under Shero.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pitt's home football game against Florida
International will start at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 2nd. The
game won't be televised via over-the-air TV, cable or satellite,
but will be shown on ESPN3.com, a broadband network that carries
numerous live sporting events.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Nittany Lions and Owls will face off on
the football field through 2016. The schools have added games for
the 2014-2016 seasons, with Temple traveling to Penn State 2014 and
2016 and hosting the Nittany Lions at home in 2015. Temple athletic
director Bill Bradshaw says the move means the schools' series will
"continue six of the next seven years."

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Pittsburgh's Antonio Brown scored on an
89-yard kickoff return to open the game, and the Steelers forced

Quarterback Dennis Dixon hurt his left knee and was replaced by
Charlie Batch. But the Steelers swarmed the Titans and came up with
four sacks and forced the most turnovers by Tennessee since 2000.

Eagles ahead just before halftime and they had to hold late on to

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia's Jayson Werth hit a two-run
walk-off homer in the ninth inning after Ryan Howard had a two-run

over the Atlanta Braves.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phillies centerfielder Shane Victorino went
0-for-4 and had an 11-game hitting streak come to en end in

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh's Neil Walker hit a two-run homer
in the Pirates' three-run eighth inning and the Bucs beat the

two hits for Pittsburgh, which has the worst record in baseball but
has won five of its last six home games.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - The star tailback in Happy Valley has
turned into an offensive question mark. Penn State senior Evan
Royster went over 3,000 rushing yards in his career in the 24-0 win
Saturday over Kent State, though he finished the game with just 38
yards on 11 carries. The senior hasn't run for more than 40 in a

NEW YORK (AP) - The Pirates have been swept out of New York by
the Mets following last night's 6-2 loss. The Mets' Mike Pelfrey
earned his 15th win, pitching seven strong innings and hitting a
tiebreaking single. Wilfredo Ledezma takes the loss for the
Pirates.

NEW YORK (AP) - Struggling Pirates pitcher Zach Duke will make
his next scheduled start for Pittsburgh on Sunday against Arizona.
The Pirates considered pulling Duke out of the rotation, but
pitching coach Ray Searage said he and Duke made some mechanical
adjustments that could help the left-hander.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Eagles are planning to start Michael
Vick on Sunday against the Lions, according to ESPN. The start
would be Vick's first in the NFL since 2006, when he was with the
Falcons. Regular starter Kevin Kolb was knocked out of last
Sunday's loss to the Packers with a concussion.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Chris Johnson of the Titans has rushed for at
least 100 yards 17 times since the start of the 2008 season. Not
one of those games came against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The former
division rivals met each of the last two seasons, but the 2009 AP
NFL Offensive Player of the Year has yet to gain even 70 yards
against the Steelers.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Penguins forward Jordan Staal needs five to
six weeks to recover from the latest procedure performed on his
injured right foot and will miss the start of the NHL season. A
tendon on the top of Staal's foot was sliced when Canadiens
defenseman P.K. Subban stepped on it during an April 30th playoff
game. The Penguins open training camp today.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State is seeking a rush - any
kind of rush. The running game has been sluggish with star tailback
Evan Royster rushing for just 72 yards on 20 carries. Meanwhile,
the Nittany Lions' pass rush could use a jolt as well. The defense
has three sacks over the first two games, but none from starting
ends Jack Crawford or Eric Latimore.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State is upgrading its hockey
team from club status to NCAA Division I. A source tells the AP the
university will make the announcement today. The Pittsburgh
Post-Gazette reports Penn State alumnus Terry Pegula has pledged
$80 million-$90 million to fund the program and build a new arena,
which would seat between 6,000-8,000 near the Bryce Jordan Center.

MIAMI (AP) - Philadelphia's Roy Halladay struck out nine to
defeat Florida for the fourth time this season and the surging
Phillies extended their lead in the NL East to three games by
beating the Marlins 10-5 last night. Halladay gave up three runs
and 10 hits in six innings for the Phillies.

NEW YORK (AP) - Angel Pagan capped New York's seven-run fourth
inning with a tiebreaking two-run single and the Mets handed the
Pirates another road loss with an 8-7 victory last night. Paul
Maholm didn't make it out of the fourth inning for Pittsburgh,
which dropped to 15-58 on the road and could threaten the 1963
Mets' record for worst road mark in a 162-game season.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates will open the 2011 season on the
road Friday, April 1st against the Cubs and will play their home
opener on Thursday, April 7th against the Rockies. They will be at
home on July 4th and Labor Day, both against the Astros.
Interleague home series will be against the Tigers, Orioles and Red
Sox.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Eagles coach Andy Reid says quarterback
Kevin Kolb and linebacker Stewart Bradley are making progress, even
though neither has passed the next phase of their concussion
testing. Reid hasn't ruled either player out for Philadelphia's
game against Detroit on Sunday, but it would seem unlikely they
could play.

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) - The Detroit Lions will start
quarterback Shaun Hill in Sunday's home opener against Philadelphia
as Matthew Stafford recovers from a shoulder injury. Stafford was
knocked out of the season opener when Chicago's Julius Peppers
sacked him Sunday, putting him on the sideline with a banged-up
right shoulder - his third injury in two seasons.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt says suspended
running back Jason Douglas is unlikely to play for the Panthers
again after being charged with striking a pedestrian with his car
while driving drunk. Wannstedt said the likelihood of Douglas
returning "is seriously in jeopardy."

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Chris Wondolowski scored his sixth
winning goal of the season and ninth overall, nodding home a header
in the 69th minute to help the San Jose Earthquakes beat the
Philadelphia Union 1-0 on last night in Major League Soccer.
Philadelphia had two good scoring chances in the first half, but
goalkeeper Jon Busch stopped long attempts by Stefani Miglioranzi
and Andrew Jacobson.

MIAMI (AP) - Philadelphia's Cole Hamels had a season-high 13
strikeouts in 6-plus innings and the Phillies have increased their
lead in the NL East to two games by beating Florida 2-1 last night.
Hamels threw a career-high 127 pitches and allowed only one run.
The left-hander won his fourth consecutive start and won for the
first time in seven career starts in Miami.

NEW YORK (AP) - Mets knuckleballer R.A. Dickey took a
three-hitter into the ninth inning and New York feasted on Zach
Duke and the Pirates in a 9-1 victory last night. The Pirates lost
their 56th road game and must win three of their final nine away
games to avoid matching the 1963 Mets for the worst road record in
a 162-game season.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Dennis Dixon will be the Steelers' starting
quarterback Sunday at Tennessee, even though the injured Byron
Leftwich may return to practice as early as today. Coach Mike
Tomlin is choosing his starter on a week-to-week basis while Ben
Roethlisberger is suspended. He says Dixon did enough things well
during a season-opening 15-9 overtime victory over Atlanta to earn
the nod.

NEW YORK (AP) - Sunday's national game on Fox, mainly
Packers-Eagles, earned its highest rating for the first weekend of
the season since the network started televising the NFL in 1994.
Green Bay's 27-20 win in Kevin Kolb's short-lived debut as
Philadelphia's full-time starter helped draw a 16.5 rating and 32
share. Fox says the rating was up 11 percent from last year.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - A season after no Pitt opponent stopped
running back Dion Lewis, one of the nation's leading returning
rushers can't seem to get started. Lewis found himself on the bench
during nearly all of the second half of Pitt's 38-16 victory over
New Hampshire on Saturday. The sophomore was held to a career-low
27 yards on 10 carries by the FCS-ranked Wildcats.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - The Penn State women's volleyball team
is upset and relieved about the loss to Stanford that ended its
record 109-match winning streak. The run came to a halt Saturday
with a three-set sweep by the Cardinal in a tournament at the
University of Florida. Coach Russ Rose says he's more upset with
how Penn State lost than the loss itself.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Duquesne is set to play four men's basketball
games at the Consol Energy Center this season, including a December
12th game against Final Four qualifier West Virginia. Duquesne is
scheduled to meet city rival Pitt in the first college game at the
downtown arena on December 1st, followed by Sunday afternoon games
January 30th against Dayton and February 13th against Xavier.

SLATINGTON, Pa. (AP) - A high school basketball coach who
allegedly drove with one of his players hanging off the roof of his
car has been fired. The Northern Lehigh school board has voted to
fire boys basketball coach Richard Oertner. The Allentown Morning
Call reports Northern Lehigh players stood in support of Oertner
while one addressed the board on the coach's behalf.

MIAMI (AP) - Philadelphia's Carlos Ruiz matched a career-high
with four RBIs, Joe Blanton allowed one run in six innings and the
Phillies continued their September sizzle beating the Marlins 11-4
last night. Ruiz, Jayson Werth, Chase Utley and Greg Dobbs all
homered for the NL East-leading Phillies, who remain a game ahead
of Atlanta.

MIAMI (AP) - Jimmy Rollins has a strained right hamstring and
could be back with the Philadelphia Phillies today. Rollins had an
MRI exam in Philadelphia yesterday, which ruled out all major
problems. He experienced tightness in the hamstring against the
Marlins on September 8th and hasn't played since.

NEW YORK (AP) - Mets pinch-hitter Nick Evans singled home the
winning run off Chan Ho Park in the 10th inning, giving the New
York Mets a 1-0 victory over the Pirates last night. Pirates
starter James McDonald went a career-high eight innings, scattering
five hits and getting help from two caught stealings.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates have claimed right-hander Chris
Leroux off waivers from the Marlins and designated right-handed
reliever Brian Bass for assignment. Leroux had a 7.00 ERA in 17
appearances with Florida, striking out 18 and walking 11 in 18
innings. He had a 6.28 ERA in 26 minor league games this season.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Quarterback Kevin Kolb and linebacker
Stewart Bradley have not been ruled out for Philadelphia's game at
Detroit next Sunday despite sustaining concussions in the season
opener. Eagles coach Andy Reid says both players must pass a
specific evaluation process before they are cleared to play. He
says the team's medical staff will follow the NFL's guidelines for
concussions.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Allen Iverson is considering playing in
China because the NBA hasn't shown any interest in the former
all-star. Iverson's personal manager says Iverson hasn't been
contacted by any NBA team with training camps set to open in less
than two weeks. He says there is "legitimate interest" between
the former 76er and a team in China to work out a deal.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pitt backup tailback Jason Douglas has been
suspended from the team after police charged him with hitting a
pedestrian while driving drunk. The 19-year-old redshirt freshman
from Florida and was arrested after witnesses told police a
motorist hit a pedestrian on the city's South Side early Sunday
morning.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A detailed examination of the brain of a
Penn football player who committed suicide showed he had the same
disease caused by hard hits that has been associated with NFL
players. The New York Times reports that Owen Thomas was in the
early stages of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a disease linked
to depression and impulse control.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies open a series
against the Mets in New York tonight. Roy Halladay is slated to
pitch the series opener. The Phillies are fighting to keep their
lead in the NL East, with the Braves looming just a game behind.

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) - Phillies third baseman
Placido Polanco says he is playing with a small break in his left
elbow, but won't surgery until after the season because
Philadelphia is in a pennant race. Polanco is batting .308 with six
homers and 47 RBIs for the NL East-leading Phillies.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies have claimed right-hander Cesar
Carrillo off waivers from San Diego and designated left-hander Nate
Robertson for assignment. The NL East leaders also placed
right-hander Scott Mathieson on the 15-day disabled list with a
back strain on Thursday. He appeared in two games this season.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - After a day off, the Pittsburgh Pirates hit
the road to face the Cincinnati Reds tonight. The Pirates took two
out of three from the Braves at the beginning of this week. They'll
be swapping one contender for another as they open their series
against the Reds. The NL Central leaders will be trying to put away
the second-place Cardinals with a strong showing against the Bucs.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Hines Ward believes Dennis Dixon must run.
Steelers offensive coordinator Bruce Arians warns he'd better not
run too much. Coach Mike Tomlin wants Dixon to take advantage of
his ability to move the ball by himself, but to do so smartly.
Dixon is filling in for Ben Rotethlisberger, who's serving a four
game suspension.

PHILADEPHIA (AP) - Brandon McManus hit a 30-yard field goal in
overtime to give Temple a 13-10 victory over Central Michigan last
night in the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams. McManus
won it for the Owls after Kee-ayre Griffin intercepted Ryan
Radcliffe's pass to end Central Michigan's lone overtime
possession.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - It's a tale of two quarterbacks when
Number 18 Penn State visits top-ranked Alabama tomorrow. True
freshman Rob Bolden will make his second start for the Nittany
Lions after a promising 239-yard, two-touchdown debut last week at
home against Youngstown State. Meanwhile, Alabama has a savvy
senior at quarterback in Greg McElroy, who is 15-0 as a starter.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - The Penn State women's volleyball
team's record 108-match winning streak will be tested this weekend.
The Nittany Lions travel to the University of Florida to play an
early-season tournament that also includes powerhouses Florida,
Stanford and Texas. The Nittany Lions haven't lost in nearly three
years.

WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Thursday

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia's Ryan Howard homered and had
six RBIs as the Phillies backed Cole Hamels with a rare burst of
the run support he had been missing most of the season in a 10-6
win over the Florida Marlins last night. Howard hit his 28th homer
of the season and the NL East-leading Phillies had a season-high 18
hits.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies say shortstop Jimmy Rollins is
day-to-day after leaving with tightness in his right hamstring last
night. Manager Charlie Manuel says Rollins was dehydrated and
skipped batting practice.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Atlanta's Omar Infante had three hits as Derek
Lowe beat Pittsburgh for the 10th straight time in a 9-3 win over
the Bucs last night. The Braves opened leads of 3-0 in the first
and 8-0 in the third after being held to two runs or fewer in five
of their previous six games.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - To honor Roberto Clemente Day last night, the
Pirates wore the beltless-style knit uniforms, with gold caps. The
uniforms are like those first worn when Three Rivers Stadium opened
in 1970 and Clemente was manning the outfield for the Buccos.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - For months, the Pittsburgh Steelers have
emphasized upgrading their running game. With the Steelers starting
the very inexperienced Dennis Dixon at quarterback Sunday against
Atlanta, Rashard Mendenhall knows that getting the running game
going is a necessity.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Alabama coach Nick Saban says tailback
Mark Ingram is unlikely to play against Penn State. He says the
top-ranked Crimson Tide's Heisman Trophy might be recovered enough
to play in Saturday night's game with the 19th-ranked Nittany Lions
but likely won't be able to get enough time in practice to be
ready. Ingram had arthoscopic surgery on the knee last month.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Many current Alabama and Penn State
players weren't alive the last time these two storied programs met
on the football field. But for fans and coaches, the games produced
some memorable games and moments. The top-ranked Crimson Tide and
19th-ranked Nittany Lions meet Saturday night. The two traditional
powers haven't played each other since 1990. They met eight times
in the 1980s.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - If the Pittsburgh Pirates need an answer to
their power-hitting problems, maybe they can find it across town in
Penguins star Sidney Crosby. The former NHL MVP homered into PNC
Park's right-field seats while taking batting practice yesterday
with eight Penguins teammates. The session was arranged by former
first baseman Sean Casey.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies are back in first place after
beating Florida 8-7 last night on Placido Polanco's tiebreaking
single in the eighth. The Phils are a half-game in front of the
Braves, who lost to Pittsburgh last night. The two-time defending
NL champions hadn't been in first place since May 30th.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phillies pitcher Scott Mathieson and
rightfielder Domonic Brown received the Paul Owens Award given to
the top players in the team's minor league system. Mathieson was
3-6 with 26 saves and a 2.80 ERA in 54 games for Triple-A Lehigh
Valley. Brown hit .327 with 20 home runs, 68 RBIs and 17 steals in
93 games between Double-A Reading and Lehigh Valley.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates helped out the Phillies by
knocking off the Braves 5-0 last night, a loss that helped power
Philadelphia back into first place in the NL East. The Pirates had
lost seven of nine and were on pace to lose 109 games before
winning the first two games of the three-game series.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Steelers knew for months that Ben
Roethlisberger would be missing when the season began. The reality
of his four-game suspension struck them as they reported for
practice this week and found his locker vacant. Without their star
quarterback, the Steelers have adopted a late-season, win-or-else
mentality in September.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - True freshman Robert Bolden's second
start at quarterback for 19th-ranked Penn State will be a lot more
difficult than his first. Bolden has earned another starting nod
for the 18th-ranked Nittany Lions after a sensational,
two-touchdown debut against Youngstown State. But he has a much
tougher test Saturday at top-ranked Alabama.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pitt has tumbled out of the Top 25 in the
aftermath of their 27-24 overtime loss to Number-20 Utah. Pitt was
punished somewhat for playing such a difficult opener - an easy win
over a nondescript opponent would have preserved its national
ranking.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Villanova has lost its top spot in the TSN
FCS rankings after last week's season-opening loss to
Philadelphia-area rival Temple. The Wildcats dropped one spot, to
second, in the rankings, with second-ranked Montana moving up to
the top spot. Penn got 358 points in this week's poll but didn't
crack the Top 25. Lehigh and Lafayette also drew a handful of
votes.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies are now just a half-game out of
first place in the NL East after splitting a day-night doubleheader
with the Marlins yesterday. Roy Oswalt pitched seven effective
innings during a 7-4 victory in the nightcap. The three-time
All-Star is 5-1 since joining the Phillies in a trade with Houston
on July 29th.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies were held to just three hits in
the opener of yesterday's doubleheader, a 7-1 loss to Florida.
Adalberto Mendez pitched one-hit ball for six scoreless innings in
his major league debut. Mike Stanton and Chad Tracy homered and Dan
Uggla drove in three runs for Florida.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates helped out their cross-state
rivals by knocking off the Braves 3-1 yesterday. Neil Walker hit a
two-run homer, Brian Burres limited Atlanta to one run over six
innings in his first start in more than three months. The Atlanta
loss helps out the Phillies, who split a doubleheader with Florida
yesterday.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates will bring up eight players from
Triple-A Indianapolis in time for today's game against Atlanta,
including right-hander Brad Lincoln and outfielder Brandon Moss.
Also being brought up are infielder Pedro Ciriaco, catcher Jason
Jaramillo, left-hander Justin Thomas, outfielder Alex Presley and
right-handers Brian Bass and Steven Jackson.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Derek Lowe's right elbow feels fine after
throwing in the bullpen and he is scheduled to start tomorrow for
the Braves against the Pirates. Lowe missed his last scheduled
start due to elbow soreness. He was encouraged after throwing
lightly Sunday, and he threw in the bullpen yesterday for the first
time in three weeks.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ben Roethlisberger is no longer a Pittsburgh
Steelers captain. Roethlisberger was not chosen a Steelers captain
in a vote of his teammates. He was selected the previous two
seasons. Roethlisberger is serving a four game suspension that
followed allegations of sexual assault in Georgia. He wasn't
charged in the case.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Quarterback Dennis Dixon will start for the
Pittsburgh Steelers in their season opener Sunday against Atlanta.
Coach Mike Tomlin has chosen the third-year player Monday over
longtime backup Charlie Batch. Ben Roethlisberger is serving his
four-game suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct
policy, while Byron Leftwich is out with a sprained left knee
ligament.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Former Temple star defensive tackle Andre
Neblett has beat the odds and made an opening day NFL roster after
going undrafted out of the Philadelphia school. Neblett is just the
fourth undrafted rookie to make the team in coach John Fox's nine
seasons as head coach of the Carolina Panthers.
