NEW YORK (AP) - Pedro Martinez had two solo homers hit off of
him by Mark Teixeira and Hideki Matsui, as the New York Yankees
beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-1 last night in Game 2 of the
World Series. The fall classic is tied at 1-1 and Game 3 takes
place tomorrow night in Philadelphia.

NEW YORK (AP) - Phillies utility man Greg Dobbs returned to
Philadelphia Game 2 of the World Series last night because he has
the flu. Dobbs was a candidate to be the designated hitter against
Yankees right-hander A.J. Burnett in last night's game, but Matt
Stairs got the nod in his absence.

NEW YORK (AP) - The World Series television ratings are back up
this year. The Philadelphia Phillies' 6-1 win in Game 1 on
Wednesday earned an 11.9 fast national rating and 19 share. That's
up 29 percent from the opener last year, when the Phillies-Rays
series drew record-low ratings.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - NHL scoring champion Evgeni Malkin will be
lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins for two to three weeks because of a
strained right shoulder.Malkin has been attempting to play through
the injury, but coach Dan Bylsma says the team decided to rest the
center. The star Russian would miss seven games if he is out two
weeks.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ben Roethlisberger can get sacked even during
an off week. A scoring change has given the Minnesota Vikings an
additional sack of Roethlisberger during Pittsburgh's 27-17 victory
last Sunday. He was sacked four times, giving him 20 for the
season. A play in which Roethlisberger was initially given a 1-yard
loss has been changed to a sack.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State freshman forward Bill
Edwards injured his right knee during practice and will miss four
to six weeks. The team says Edwards partially tore the MCL in the
knee at practice Wednesday. Edwards had been impressive in
preseason and was expected to earn early playing time.

NEW YORK (AP) - In the opening game of the World Series, Cliff
Lee and Chase Utley got Philadelphia off to a fast start. Lee
pitched a complete-game, six-hitter to outduel CC Sabathia, Utley
homered twice and the Phillies beat the New York Yankees 6-1 last
night. Pedro Martinez starts for the Phillies against A.J. Burnett
in Game 2 tonight.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - There's a new twist on the traditional bet
between governors of states with World Series teams this year. If
the Philadelphia Phillies win, an essay winner and a guest will get
a night on the town in Manhattan. If the New York Yankees win, a
state resident and guest chosen by lottery will get a VIP weekend
in the City of Brotherly Love.

NEW YORK (AP) - First lady Michelle Obama received a warm
welcome from Yankees fans and a kiss from the captain before Game 1

and the Pittsburgh Penguins became the first NHL team to reach 10
victories this season, by beating the Montreal Canadiens 6-1
victory last night. Crosby, tied for fourth in the NHL with nine
goals, had his third multiple-goal game in 12 starts this season
for Pittsburgh.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Brian Westbrook will be a game-time decision
for the Philadelphia Eagles against the New York Giants on Sunday
after suffering a concussion earlier this week. Westbrook was
knocked unconscious in the Eagles 27-17 win over Washington on

NEW YORK (AP) - Philadelphia Phillies Manager Charlie Manuel has
announced that Pedro Martinez is scheduled to start for the
Philadelphia Phillies in Game 2 of the World Series tomorrow night
at Yankee Stadium. Manuel had already announced that Cliff Lee will
start the opening game of the World Series tonight. CC Sabathia
starts for the Yankees this evening.

NEW YORK (AP) - There could be more soggy weather in the Bronx
for Game 1 of the World Series. The National Weather Service says
there's a 30 percent chance of showers for tonight's opener between
the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees. The gametime
temperature is expected to be about 47 degrees.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ticket brokers say a rainy forecast and
other factors are causing prices to fall for the opening game of
the World Series tonight in New York. But there seems to be more
demand and higher prices for the weekend games in Philadelphia.
Tonight's prices for resale tickets have dropped from about $330 to
$270 for the cheapest seats.

NEW YORK (AP) - Check out the lyrics of "Empire State of
Mind," the hit song Jay-Z and fellow New Yorker Alicia Keys plan
to perform at tomorrow night's World Series Game 2 at Yankee
Stadium. Major League Baseball says you'll hear a more wholesome
rendition. There's a clean version that goes out on radio and
that's what they'll use.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Alexander Semin returned from a two-game
absence with a tiebreaking goal and an assist, Jose Theodore
stopped Darroll Powe's penalty shot and the Washington Capitals
beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-2 last night. Alex Ovechkin scored
two goals - including an empty-netter in the final minute and
Nicklas Backstrom had four points for the Capitals.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Flyers forward Simon Gagne has two small
hernias in his right groin and could face surgery. The Flyers left
winger had an ultrasound that discovered the hernias. Flyers
general manager Paul Holmgren says the team's medical staff will
meet with Gagne today to discuss his options. Gagne has struggled
this season.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles could be without
running back Brian Westbrook as they enter the grueling part of
their schedule. Westbrook left with a concussion in the first
quarter of Monday night's 27-17 victory over the Washington
Redskins. He will go through tests before his status for Sunday's
game against the Giants is determined.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - After meeting with his players Pittsburgh
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin gave most of them the rest of the week
off during this bye week. All players will return on Monday. This
is the first time the Steelers have given their players an entire
week off from practice during the season. The Steelers don't play
again until a Nov. 9 game in Denver.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Tonight is Game 5 of the National League
Championship Series and the Philadelphia Phillies are just one win
away from closing out the Los Angeles Dodgers. If the Phillies win,
it would be the second straight year that they secured a berth in
the World Series. The defending champions are sending Cole Hamels
to the mound to start tonight.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Matt Cooke had a goal and an assist, four
other Pittsburgh players scored and the Penguins earned their sixth
straight win by beating the St. Louis Blues 5-1 last night. Only
five of Pittsburgh's 18 skaters failed to record a point in the win
that pushed the Penguins' record to an NHL-best 8-1.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Mike James made two of three free throws
with 0.3 seconds remaining to lift the short-handed Washington
Wizards to a 90-89 preseason victory over the Philadelphia 76ers
last night. Randy Foye scored 17 points for Washington. Andre
Iguodala scored 19 points for the Sixers, who have lost two of
their last three games.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles have acquired
linebacker Will Witherspoon from the St. Louis Rams for rookie wide
receiver Brandon Gibson and a fifth-round pick in 2010. Witherspoon
is an eight-year veteran who spent his first four seasons with
Carolina. He was the Rams' starter at the weakside spot this
season.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin says
Jeff Reed will play in Sunday's home game against the undefeated
Minnesota Vikings despite criminal charges against him. Reed is
charged with simple assault, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct

DELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies buried the Los
Angeles Dodgers 11-0 last night to take a two-games-to-one lead in
the National League Championship Series. Cliff Lee allowed three

lopsided playoff victory ever. Shane Victorino capped the scoring
with a three-run homer after Ryan Howard drove in three runs and
Jayson Werth smacked a two-run blast.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The Vikings are the first 6-and-0 team of the
NFL season this season after Brett Favre passed for 278 yards and
three touchdowns in a 33-31 win over Baltimore. Brett Favre's

1:56 left. Ravens kicker Steve Hauschka (HAWSH'-kuh) hooked a
44-yard attempt as time expired to keep the Vikings undefeated.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies Web site is
reporting that it appears Cole Hamels will start Game 1 of the
National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers
tomorrow night. No official announcement has been made yet by
manager Charlie Manuel about his rotation. Hamels won in both his
starts against the Dodgers in last year's NLCS.

NEW YORK (AP) - The kickoff times of the Giants-Eagles and
Vikings-Packers games Nov. 1 have been flipped because of the
possibility of a World Series game and football action in
Philadelphia on that same night.Giants-Eagles will now start at 1
p.m. EST, with Minnesota-Green Bay at 4:15 p.m. The NFL says it
wants to ease the burden on law enforcement employees.

NEW YORK (AP) - Elton Brand scored 20 points in his best game of
the preseason and the Philadelphia 76ers beat the New York Knicks
93-85 last night for their first 4-0 exhibition start since 1978.
Brand shot 8 of 12 from the field and scored 10 points in the third
quarter, when the 76ers rebounded from an ugly second period to
take the lead for good.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end Aaron Smith
has a right shoulder injury that coach Mike Tomlin says
"potentially could be significant." Smith was injured Sunday in
Detroit. He was being evaluated yesterday and the Steelers are not
yet certain how long he will be out.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Center fielder Andrew McCutchen is the winner
of the Roberto Clemente Award, which is presented annually to the
top Pittsburgh Pirates player of that season. McCutchen received
seven of a possible nine first-place votes in balloting by members

DENVER (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies rallied past the
Colorado Rockies 5-4 last night to reach the NL championship
series. Ryan Howard hit a two-run double in the ninth inning and
scored on Jayson Werth's single. Brad Lidge earned his second
straight save, once again retiring cleanup man Troy Tulowitzki. The
Phils play the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia is showing brotherly love for
its baseball team following the victory over the Colorado Rockies.
Fans who gathered in taverns for last night's game saw the Rockies
take a lead late in the game. But they were jubilant as the
Phillies made a comeback.

OTTAWA (AP) - Tyler Kennedy scored twice and Marc-Andre Fleury
made 30 saves, leading the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 4-1 win over
the Ottawa Senators last night. Bill Guerin and Jordan Staal also
scored for the Penguins, who won their third in a row, to remain
undefeated on the road.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Michael Vick has this handing-off thing
down. He's waiting to do more. Two games into his return to the
NFL, Vick hasn't been a factor for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Clearly, the Eagles brought Vick in to do more. But the Eagles are
in no rush to show opposing defenses too much when they routed
Kansas City and beat Tampa Bay this past Sunday.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The South Florida at Pittsburgh game will
start at noon ET on Saturday, Oct. 24 and will be televised
regionally by ESPN. The game will be the first of two played at
Heinz Field in a 28-hour hour period, with the Vikings and Steelers
meeting the following day.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Cliff Lee dominated the Colorado Rockies,
tossing a six-hitter and the Philadelphia Phillies began their
World Series title defense with a 5-1 victory in their playoff
opener yesterday.Raul Ibanez had two hits and two RBIs and Ryan
Howard and Jayson Werth drove in runs with key extra-base hits off
15-game winner Ubaldo Jimenez. The second game of the N.L.D.S. is
at 2:37 this afternoon.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A Florida girl who grabbed a historic 200th
home run ball hit by Philadelphia Phillies slugger Ryan Howard has
her prize back after suing the team for its return. After
12-year-old Jennifer Valdivia scooped up the ball, she was escorted
to the Phillies clubhouse, then exchanged it for an autographed
ball. The girl's mother filed a lawsuit Monday seeking the home run
ball's return. Now the girl has the ball back.

TORONTO (AP) - In NBA preseason action, Thaddeus Young had 11
points, Elton Brand and Samuel Dalembert each scored 10, and the
Philadelphia 76ers used a near-perfect performance from the free
throw line to beat the Toronto Raptors 84-79 last night. Marco
Belinelli and Sonny Weems both scored 12 points for the Raptors,
who played without All-Star Chris Bosh and offseason addition Hedo
Turkoglu.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Petr Prucha was knocked off his skates but
still pushed the puck into the net while sitting on a Penguins
player's back in the second period and the Phoenix Coyotes took
advantage of nine power plays to beat Pittsburgh 3-0 last night.
The Penguins played a flat, error-filled and uninspired game before
leaving on a difficult five-game road trip that begins tonight in
Philadelphia.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb was back
at practice and says he'll be in the starting lineup when
Philadelphia plays Tampa Bay on Sunday.McNabb has been out since
breaking his rib in the season opener. He missed two games before
the Eagles had their bye this past weekend. He expects to wear a
protective jacket against the Buccaneers.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The Minnesota Twins are the AL Central champions for the fifth time in eight years after a 6-5, 12-inning win over the Detroit Tigers in a one-game playoff. Alexi Casilla ended the game and the division title race with an RBI single in the bottom of the 12th. Brandon Inge laced a run-scoring double to put the Tigers up 5-4 in the 10th, but the Twins tied it
on Matt Tolbert's RBI single.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Cliff Lee will start Game 1 of the NL division series for the Philadelphia Phillies against the Colorado Rockies this afternoon. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner got the nod over Cole Hamels, who was MVP of the World Series and NLCS last year. Lee was 7-4 with a 3.39 ERA in 12 starts after the Phillies acquired him July 29.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The mayors of Philadelphia and Denver say agencies that help the homeless will benefit from their friendly wager over the first-round playoff series between the Colorado Rockies and Philadelphia Phillies. If the Rockies win, Denver's Road Home would receive $1,000 from Comcast Corp. and money from various banks for homeless families. If the Phillies win, Project H.O.M.E. would receive $2,000.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia Phillies left-handed reliever J.C. Romero will have surgery today to repair the flexor tendon in his left forearm. Romero is expected to need five to six months to recover.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Danny Briere pounced on a loose puck and knocked in the rebound at 3:52 of overtime to keep the Philadelphia Flyers perfect and lift them to a 6-5 win over the Washington Capitals last night. Mike Richards bested Alex Ovechkin with his second career hat trick to help the Flyers improve to 3-0 for the first time since the 1998-99 season.

LONDON, Ontario (AP) - In NBA preseason action, Louis Williams scored 17 points, Andre Iguodala added 15 points and eight assists and the Philadelphia 76ers held on for a 107-98 victory over the Toronto Raptors last night. PITTSBURGH (AP) — Rashard Mendenhall of the Pittsburgh Steelers surpassed his previous career total with 165 yards rushing and two scores as the Steelers opened a 28-point lead, then held on to beat the San Diego Chargers 38-28 last night. CINCINNATI (AP) — Brandon Phillips, the last man standing in Cincinnati's season of unending injuries, drove in three runs and Homer Bailey shut out Pittsburgh for six innings yesterday, setting up a 6-0 victory as the NL Central's two more forlorn franchises ended the season together. The Pirates finished their 17th straight losing season, while the Reds ended their ninth in a row.

RENO, Nev. HILADELPHIA (AP) - Cliff Lee was shaky in his playoff tuneup
and the Philadelphia Phillies, one night after clinching their
third consecutive NL East title, lost 5-3 to the Houston Astros.
Lee, a strong candidate to start Game 1 in the best-of-five
division series Wednesday, worked 5 2-3 innings, allowing four
runs. The Phillies finish out the regular season this weekend at
home against the Florida Marlins.

CHICAGO (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates at Chicago Cubs game last
night was called in the top of the fourth inning after a rain delay
of 2 hours, 32 minutes. The game will not be made up because both
teams have been eliminated from postseason contention and there are
just three games left in the season.

NEW YORK (AP) - Nike says it does not have a "contractual
relationship" with Michael Vick, a day after the quarterback's
agent announced a deal with the manufacturer. In a statement
released yesterday, Nike says it has "agreed to supply product to
Michael Vick as we do a number of athletes who are not under
contract with Nike."

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The running back was confused about his
assignments and didn't appear to know his playbook, so he found
himself on the bench. No carries, no yardage, no recognition.
Happens all the time in Pop Warner football, and high school ball,
too. College football? Not so often. The NFL? You've got to be
kidding. Pittsburgh's Rashard Mendenhall is the exception. An
embarrassed one, too: He didn't get a single carry against
Cincinnati.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Sidney Crosby is still speaking softly, only
now he's carrying a different stick.The Stanley Cup-winning
Pittsburgh Penguins captain plans to use a one-piece synthetic
