PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Michael Vick threw two touchdown passes, LeSean McCoy had a career-best 185 yards rushing and two scores and the Philadelphia Eagles routed the Dallas Cowboys 34-7 last night. The Eagles dominated right from the start, improved to 13-0 after a bye under coach Andy Reid.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Ben Roethlisberger passed for 365 yards and two touchdowns as the Pittsburgh Steelers finally found a way to beat Tom Brady and the New England Patriots 25-17 yesterday. Roethlisberger completed 36 of 50 passes and led the Steelers on a series of clock-chewing drives, effectively keeping Brady and the NFL's top-ranked offense off the field.

CHESTER, Pa. (AP) — Andre Hainault and Calen Carr scored in the first half to lift the Houston Dynamo past the Philadelphia Union 2-1 in the first leg of the Eastern Conference semifinals last night. Carr's goal in the 30th minute snapped a 1-all tie and ultimately gave the Dynamo the edge in this series heading into Thursday night's matchup in Houston. The two-game series is based on aggregate goals between the two teams.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — A strong defense and running game, and a knack for pulling out games down the stretch has fueled Number 16 Penn State to an 8-1 start. The latest close call came Saturday when Silas Redd's 3-yard touchdown run with 1:08 left helped beat Illinois 10-7.

FREEHOLD, N.J. (AP) — Voters in New Jersey will soon decide if they want to legalize gambling on professional sports games. The referendum is the only one on the ballot this fall in the Garden State. It asks whether sports betting should be allowed at Atlantic City casinos, the state's four horse racing tracks, and a former track location in Cherry Hill, outside Philadelphia.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Evgeni Malkin's shootout goal capped a rally from a two-goal deficit in the third period and the Pittsburgh Penguins extended their winning streak to five with a 3-2 victory over the New York Islanders last night. New York has lost four in a row overall and hasn't won in Pittsburgh in almost four years.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Andrew Ladd scored the game-winner with 1:06 remaining on a one-timer from close range to lift the Winnipeg Jets to a wild 9-8 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers last night. Fifteen players scored in the wide-open game in which both clubs set season highs for goals scored and goals allowed.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley is emerging as the team's new leader. He's playing the best football of his career. Woodley leads the AFC with seven sacks heading into Sunday's much anticipated showdown with New England.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — The New England Patriots defense is preparing for a tough test against the Pittsburgh Steelers this weekend. Although New England is still the lowest-rated team in total defense, the Patriots have had solid defensive games in back-to-back wins over the Jets and Cowboys. Next up are the Steelers on Sunday in Pittsburgh.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Arguably, no NHL franchise has been more positively impacted by the draft than the Pittsburgh Penguins. Now, word has come that for the second time, the team will host it. Less than 10 months after the city served as the site of the annual Winter Classic outdoor game, commissioner Gary Bettman was in Pittsburgh to confirm the Consol Energy Center will host the next draft in June.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh running back Ray Graham will miss the rest of the season after injuring his right knee in the first quarter of Wednesday's 35-20 win over Connecticut. The school says Graham will need surgery to repair the knee.

ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) — Commissioner Jim Delany insists expansion remains on the Big Ten's back burner. While the national landscape continues to change, Delany says his conference is happy with 12 members.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Penn State is set to begin a new era on the basketball court with coach Patrick Chambers. Chambers replaces Ed DeChellis, who surprised his bosses in late May when he bolted his alma mater for the same job at Navy. It came two months after Penn State made its first NCAA tournament in a decade.

MONTREAL (AP) — Carey Price made 21 saves for his 100th win and Max Pacioretty had two goals and an assist and the Montreal Canadiens ended a six-game losing streak with a 5-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers last night. Pacioretty assisted on Andrei Kostitsyn's goal 10:26 into the second and scored 2:12 later to make it 3-1. He added his second goal of the game in the third.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Tino Sunseri threw for a career-high 419 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score as Pittsburgh rolled past Connecticut 35-20 last night. The Panthers snapped a two-game skid despite losing star running back Ray Graham to a nasty-looking right knee injury in the first quarter.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers say they're not afraid of the New England Patriots. The Steelers are 1-6 against New England when Tom Brady starts at quarterback, including a 39-26 loss at Heinz Field last year. Wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery says the Steelers need to focus on the present and not worry about the past.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Under coach Andy Reid, the Philadelphia Eagles are 12-0 after a bye week. They're looking to extend that winning streak when they host the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night. It's another must-win for the Eagles, who can't afford to lose any more after a poor start.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Unhappy he was trade bait, Eagles cornerback Asante Samuel took a shot at Eagles' management. He criticized the team's front-office and compared them to people who play fantasy football. Samuel says he doesn't have any problem with coach Andy Reid.

DALLAS (AP) — Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Vince Young is being sued by a Dallas strip club manager he allegedly punched in the face last year. Creiton Kinchen claims the 28-year-old Houston native and former University of Texas star hit him without provocation at the club. Young's agent could not immediately be reached for comment.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — When Chris Pronger returns to the NHL, he will also wear a protective eye shield. The Philadelphia Flyers defenseman was injured this week when a wayward stick jabbed him just outside his right eye during a 4-2 win over Toronto. While some players, like Pronger, have refused to wear a visor, the time could be near when they're as much a part of the game as sticks and gloves.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — A new crop of playmakers have emerged in Happy Valley to help Number 21 Penn State. Sophomore Silas Redd has a Big Ten-leading 869 yards in his first year as the featured tailback in place of school career rushing leader Evan Royster. The Nittany Lions lost a key player when linebacker Michael Mauti went down with a left knee injury in Week 4. But junior Gerald Hodges has picked up the big-play slack.

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) — Pascal Dupuis and Richard Park had goals, and Marc-Andre Fleury was sharp in making 33 saves in his 20th NHL shutout as the Pittsburgh Penguins earned their fourth straight win by beating the New York Islanders 3-0 last night. Star center Evgeni Malkin returned to the Penguins' depleted lineup after missing five games because of his troublesome right knee.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers are off to a 5-2 start and lead the AFC North. Coach Mike Tomlin is pleased with the progress his team has made in recent weeks, but says it's only October. Tomlin knows the Steelers will have to continue to improve if they want to beat the Patriots on Sunday.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — A preseason hit still has Joe Paterno sore, and the Penn State quarterback job still remains open. Yet through all the drama, the 21st-ranked Nittany Lions find themselves in first place in the Leaders Division heading into Saturday's game against Illinois.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — New Pittsburgh coach Todd Graham gave his team a little history lesson to show the struggling Panthers they're not out of the Big East race. Graham pointed to last year's Connecticut team that lost its first two conference games then rolled off five straight wins to take the conference title. It's a lesson new UConn coach Paul Pasqualoni could draw on as well heading into tonight's game at Heinz Field.

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — NBC Sports is receiving a $20 million loan with a 1 percent interest rate from the state of Connecticut to move much of its production from New York. Officials announced the deal yesterday. It's expected to create 450 jobs.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jaromir Jagr and Scott Hartnell scored their first two goals of the season as the Flyers downed the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2. The win was overshadowed by defenseman Chris Pronger's injury, taking a stick to the face during a scramble for a loose puck with the Leafs' Mikhail Grabovski.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger is on bed rest and will miss two to three weeks after taking a stick in the face during last night's win over Toronto. Pronger and Toronto's Mikhail Grabovski were going after a loose puck when their sticks connected, sending one up into Pronger's face.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Phillies have declined the team's options for pitchers Roy Oswalt and Brad Lidge. Oswalt went 9-10 this past season in 23 starts but was due to make $16 million next year. Instead he'll get a $2 million buyout. Lidge will get a $1.5 million buyout. GM Ruben Amaro Jr. says the Phillies will consider re-signing both players.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Penguins defenseman Zbynek Michalek's broken finger will have him out for as many as six weeks. Michalek broke the finger on his right hand in the third period of Saturday's 4-1 win over New Jersey when he dived to block a slap shot by the Devils' Rod Pelley. Michalek will not need surgery to repair the break.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — After an uneven start to the season, the Pittsburgh Steelers' foes get considerably tougher with a homestand against New England followed by Baltimore. The Steelers are 5-2 but were crushed by the Ravens in Week One. The Steelers have also had their problems facing the Patriots during the Tom Brady era.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Defending national champion Penn State gets a rematch this weekend against new number 1 Nebraska in women's volleyball. The Cornhuskers took over the top spot after beating previously unbeaten and top-ranked Illinois last weekend. Nebraska beat Penn State in their first matchup in September. The Lions will open the weekend's play by hosting Iowa Friday.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Ben Roethlisberger threw 95 yards to Mike Wallace for the longest pass play in Steelers history and Pittsburgh went on to hand the Arizona Cardinals their fifth consecutive loss, 32-20. Roethlisberger also had TD passes of 12 yards and 4 yards.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward was carted off the field at Arizona yesterday with a sprained ankle. The injury came in the third quarter. Ward ranks 19th in NFL history in yards receiving.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Nose tackle Chris Hoke was among the Pittsburgh players inactive for yesterday's game at Arizona. Hoke is out with a neck injury. With Casey Hampton already sidelined with a shoulder injury, Steve McLendon got his first career start at nose tackle.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — Harvard won the men's championship eights yesterday in the Head of the Charles Regatta, the Crimson's first victory in the competition since 1977. OTTAWA (AP) - Philadelphia rookie Matt Read needed only one
period against the Ottawa Senators to put up the biggest numbers of
his young career. Read had a goal and two assists in the opening 20
minutes as the Flyers built a four-goal lead and went on to beat
the Senators 7-2 last night. Read added a third assist in the third
period.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Pascal Dupuis had a short-handed goal and
an assist, James Neal scored for the sixth time this season and the
depleted Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Minnesota Wild 4-2 last
night. Chris Kunitz and Jordan Staal also got goals and Matt Cooke
had two assists for the Penguins, who were winless in their
previous three games.

NEW YORK (AP) - Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kris Letang has
been suspended for two games by the NHL for boarding Winnipeg Jets
forward Alex Burmistrov. Letang's ban was handed out yesterday,
just hours before the Penguins visited the Minnesota Wild. The
defenseman also will miss tomorrow's home game against Montreal.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia 76ers are under new
management. The deal to sell the Sixers to a group led by New
York-based leveraged buyout specialist Joshua Harris has been
completed. The Sixers held a press conference Tuesday to introduce
the owners. The sale ends Comcast-Spectacor's 15-year run of
ownership.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers coach Mike Tomlin says All-Pro safety
Troy Polamalu has passed a concussion test and could play Sunday
against Arizona. The Steelers removed Polamalu for the final two
defensive series of a 17-13 win over Jacksonville with
concussionlike symptoms.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles traded running back
Ronnie Brown to the Detroit Lions for running back Jerome Harrison
and an undisclosed draft pick in 2013. Harrison is starting his
second stint with the Eagles. He was first acquired in a 2010 trade
with Cleveland and rushed for 239 yards and a touchdown.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Three men accused in a fatal beating outside
a Philadelphia Phillies game have pleaded guilty to voluntary
manslaughter. Francis Kirchner, Charles Bowers and James Groves
face up to 40 years in prison for their roles in the drunken melee
in July of 2009. Prosecutors say the fight started over a spilled
beer. David Sale Jr. of Lansdale was killed.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Another milestone is within reach for
Penn State's Joe Paterno. Paterno is one win away from tying Eddie
Robinson for second place on the career victories list for all NCAA
divisions at 408. Paterno is already major college football's
winningest coach. The next milestone could come Saturday when Penn
State visits Northwestern.

CINCINNATI (AP) - Former Reds owner Carl Lindner Jr. was praised
yesterday for his willingness to help worthy causes and for never
forgetting his roots. The publicity-shy Cincinnati financier known
for a shrewdness that forged a business empire died Monday at the
age of 92. Lindner was surrounded by his wife, sons and other
family members when he died of causes related to age. His wide
range of businesses over the years included baseball, insurance and
banks.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - THE ST. LOUIS CARDINALS ARE HEADING TO MILWAUKEE WITH A 3-2 LEAD IN THE NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES. THE CARDS BEAT MILWAUKEE 7-1 LAST NIGHT, TAKING ADVANTAGE OF FOUR BREWERS ERRORS TO TAKE THE UPPER HAND IN THE SERIES.
ST. LOUIS (AP) - TONY LA RUSSA SOUNDS LIKE HE WANTS TO RETURN AS
ST. LOUIS CARDINALS MANAGER NEXT SEASON. EXPRESSING DELIGHT BEFORE
GAME 5 OF THE NL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES FRIDAY NIGHT, LA RUSSA
EXPRESSED EXCITEMENT ABOUT THE TALENT IN PLACE AS HE CONTEMPLATES
COMING BACK FOR A 17TH CAMPAIGN AS CARDS SKIPPER.
ARLINGTON, TEXAS (AP) - THE RANGERS GET A SECOND OPPORTUNITY TO
WRAP UP A SECOND STRAIGHT FALL CLASSIC APPEARANCE WHEN THEY HOST
THE TIGERS FOR GAME 6 OF THE AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
TONIGHT. THE RANGERS SEND OUT DEREK HOLLAND AGAINST THE TIGERS' MAX
SCHERZER TONIGHT.
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - JEFF SKINNER SCORED WITH 1:24 LEFT IN THE THIRD PERIOD AND CAM WARD MADE 39 SAVES IN LEADING THE CAROLINA HURRICANES TO A 4-3 WIN OVER THE BUFFALO SABRES LAST NIGHT. THAT'S THE SABRES' FIRST LOSS OF THE SEASON.

LAS VEGAS (AP) - INDYCAR SERIES TITLE CONTENDERS DARIO FRANCHITTI AND WILL POWER WILL START ON THE SAME ROW, WELL BACK IN THE FIELD FOR THE SEASON FINALE SUNDAY AT LAS VEGAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY. FRANCHITTI, WHO HOLDS AN 18-POINT LEAD OVER POWER IN THE SEASON STANDINGS.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Andrej Meszaros scored the go-ahead goal in
the third period to keep the Philadelphia Flyers undefeated with a
5-4 victory over the Vancouver Canucks last night. James van
Riemsdyk, Claude Giroux, Chris Pronger and Jakub Voracek scored for
the Flyers in their home opener and goalie Ilya Bryzgalov won his
third straight start.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ryan Howard could miss the start of next
season after the Phillies' slugger had surgery yesterday to repair
his torn Achilles' tendon. Howard ruptured his left Achilles'
tendon while making the final out in Philadelphia's 1-0 loss to St.
Louis in the deciding game of the NLDS last Friday night.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Still stinging from an early postseason
exit, Charlie Manuel isn't ready to lower his team's expectations.
The Philadelphia Phillies didn't win the World Series title that
everyone expected this season. But Manuel says the Phils will
contend again.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Hines Ward says he will retire when he looks
across the line of scrimmage and thinks he can't get open. That
doesn't appear to be anytime soon. The 35-year-old wide receiver
put together his first two-touchdown game in two years last weekend
as the Steelers topped Tennessee 38-17.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Michael Vick's passes are landing in
defender's hands at an alarming rate. Vick has thrown more
interceptions - seven - five games into this season than he did all
of last year when he led the Philadelphia Eagles to the NFC East
title. But a closer look shows Vick isn't really at fault for most
of them. A combination of mistakes by receivers and poor protection
has hurt him.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - The keys to Penn State's recent
success sound about as vanilla as their blue-and-white uniforms.
Strong defense has led the way, with an assist the last few weeks
from the running game. The Nittany Lions (5-1, 2-0 Big Ten) aren't
complaining about the results, especially after a 13-3 win last
week over Iowa.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Matt Cooke scored his team-leading third goal
of the season and the Pittsburgh Penguins raced past the Florida
Panthers 4-2 last night. Pascal Dupuis, James Neal and Richard Park
also had goals for the Penguins, who are off to their best start in
17 seasons despite playing without captain Sidney Crosby and Evgeni
Malkin.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Jimmy
Rollins is headed toward free agency and says he wants to return to
the Phils. He made it clear yesterday he wants a five-year deal.
General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. also says he wants Rollins to stay
in Philadelphia. But those mutual feelings are no guarantee Rollins
will be here next year.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Charlie Morton will
be out about six months after having hip surgery. Morton had the
surgery Monday to repair a torn labrum, and is not expected to be
ready for the start of spring training.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers defensive backs William
Gay and Keenan Lewis were supposed to simply be fill-ins when
starting cornerback Bryant McFadden started the season on the
sideline with a leg injury. The duo has played so well, coach Mike
Tomlin says there's no need to rush McFadden back onto the field.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - A near-miss on the Penn State sideline
left Joe Paterno sore, though this latest ailment hasn't left the
Hall of Fame coach pondering his future. Paterno said yesterday his
focus is solely on the Nittany Lions' next game, at home Saturday
against Purdue. Then he added with a straight face that maybe he'd
coach another 10 years.

BOSTON (AP) - Boston College Athletic Director Gene DeFilippo
has sent a letter of apology to the presidents and ADs of the
Atlantic Coast Conference for saying in a newspaper interview that
ESPN told the league to add Pittsburgh and Syracuse. Boston College
released DeFilippo's short letter yesterday. In it, he apologizes
for "any negative effects caused by my recent interview with a
Boston Globe reporter."

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) - Fred Jackson had 196 yards from
scrimmage and linebacker Nick Barnett had two of Buffalo's four
interceptions in leading the Bills to a 31-24 win over the
Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles have lost four straight and are off
to their worst start since 1999, coach Andy Reid's first season.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) - Philadelphia Eagles quarterback
Michael Vick became the NFL's career leading rusher for
quarterbacks yesterday against the Buffalo Bills. Vick passed
Randall Cunningham with a 53-yard scramble to the right in the
third quarter that gave him 4,946 yards rushing, surpassing
Cunningham's mark of 4,928 yards.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) - Buffalo Bills receiver Donald Jones
was carted off with an ankle injury in the first quarter of the
game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Jones was hurt after his
7-yard catch on a screen pass from Ryan Fitzpatrick. Jones entered
the game as the Bills' third-leading receiver with 14 catches for
149 yards and one touchdown.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ben Roethlisberger tied a team record with
five touchdown passes - including two to Hines Ward - and the
Pittsburgh Steelers rolled past the Tennessee Titans 38-17. Other
than a slight limp when he ran, Roethlisberger appeared to have no
issues with his sprained left foot, also hitting Mike Wallace,
Heath Miller and David Johnson for scores.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State lamented the running and
conditioning drills through the summer and preseason. Halfway
through the year, that extra work is paying off. The Nittany Lions
finished strong in a 13-3 win over Iowa, forcing three
fourth-quarter turnovers and turning up the blitz while ending a
three-game skid against the Hawkeyes.

MONTREAL (AP) - The Montreal Canadiens returned 31-year-old
Blair Betts to the Philadelphia Flyers after the center claimed off
waivers failed a medical examination. The Canadiens claimed Betts
on Oct. 5. An NHL bylaw states a player claimed on waivers may be
returned if he's deemed to be physically unfit.

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Ales Hemsky scored the shootout winner
and the Edmonton Oilers started off the season with a 2-1 win over
the Pittsburgh Penguins. Rookie Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored the
tying goal with less than five minutes left in regulation for the
Oilers. Kris Letang scored for the Penguins, who were without
Evgeni Malkin. The center left after the pregame skate with what
appeared to be a lower body injury.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - It comes down to Game 5 tonight for the
Phillies as they host the Cardinals in the deciding game of their
playoff series. Roy Halladay gets the ball for the Phillies against
the Cardinals' ace, Chris Carpenter. The two both made their
initial mark in the majors with Toronto but tonight's matchup will
mark the first time they've faced each other on the mound.

BOSTON (AP) - The Boston Bruins raised their Stanley Cup banner
last night but the Flyers got the win in the regular season opener
for both teams, 2-1. Jaromir Jagr (YAHR'-oh-meer YAH'-gur) scored
his 1,600th career NHL point in the win, while Ilya Bryzgalov
(IHL'-yuh brihs-GAH'-lahf) made 22 saves.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang
scored in the shootout to push the Penguins past the Canucks in
Vancouver last night, 4-3. Matt Cooke also scored once on a power
play and once short-handed while Marc-Andre Fleury (marhk-ahn-dray
FLOOR'-ee) had 33 saves in the season-opening win.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - With James Harrison out for several weeks with
a broken bone around his left eye, the Steelers' Lawrence Timmons
will be taking his spot in the lineup at right outside linebacker.
The Steelers, who face Tennessee Sunday, say there isn't all that
much of a transition that Timmons will have to make. He moved from
the outside to inside linebacker when he began his NFL career.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Eagles defensive coordinator Juan Castillo
is staying cool even though his unit has blown three consecutive
fourth-quarter leads. Castillo says that while there are some
things the team and him need to take care of, he's confident the
Eagles will "get this thing turned around." The Eagles play
Buffalo this Sunday.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Mercyhurst and Robert Morris are both in
Nebraska for the weekend. Mercyhurst this evening takes on host
Nebraska-Omaha in the Mutual of Omaha Stampede. Mercyhurst is 0-2-0
against Nebraska-Omaha. Robert Morris will take on Colgate in the
tournament's other opening-day game.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - David Freese homered, doubled and drove in four
runs as the St. Louis Cardinals tagged playoff nemesis Roy Oswalt
and beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-3 last night, forcing a
deciding fifth game in their NL division series. Roy Halladay, the
Game 1 winner, will face St. Louis ace Chris Carpenter tomorrow
night in Philadelphia.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - A squirrel ran across home plate in the fifth
inning of the NL division series game between the Phillies and
Cardinals last night. The squirrel darted across the plate shortly
after Roy Oswalt delivered a pitch. Plate umpire Angel Hernandez
called it a ball, and Oswalt and manager Charlie Manuel argued.
Skip Schumaker flied out to center on the next pitch. This was the
third time one of the rodents was spotted at Busch Stadium.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Michael Vick says it's time for the Eagles
to move past the 'Dream Team' label and focus on being themselves.
The defending NFC East champions are 1-3 in a season that began
with Super Bowl aspirations. The Eagles head to Buffalo on Sunday.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers have re-signed veteran
tackle Max Starks to a one-year deal to give the team's battered
offensive line some much-needed depth. The Steelers cut the
seven-year veteran in the preseason in a salary cap move. Starks
started 68 games with the Steelers between 2004-10 but missed the
second half of the 2010 season with a neck injury.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Pittsburgh Penguins captain
Sidney Crosby skated with the team yesterday, but still doesn't
know when he will be able to play in a game. The star center has
been sidelined since January 5th because of post-concussion
symptoms.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - New transfers are settling in at Penn
State, while school administrators are putting the finishing
touches on plans for the on-campus ice arena. The Nittany Lions are
right on schedule a year out from moving up to Division I status,
and two years away from the start of the anticipated Big Ten hockey
conference.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Pinch-hitter Ben Francisco and closer Ryan
Madson made manager Charlie Manuel's moves look smart, and the
Philadelphia Phillies held off the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2
yesterday for a 2-1 lead in their NL playoff series. Francisco
batted for pitcher Cole Hamels and broke open a scoreless game with
a three-run homer in the seventh inning.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ben Roethlisberger's left foot is good enough
to play. James Harrison's right eye is not, and he'll need surgery.
Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin says he expects
Roethlisberger to be under center when his struggling team faces
surging Tennessee on Sunday at Heinz Field.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Joe Paterno prodded reporters and
poked fun at himself. Penn State's head coach was in a good mood
for someone trying to get his team ready to face Big Ten nemesis
Iowa. The Hawkeyes are 8-1 against the Nittany Lions since 2000.
Paterno says he's focusing on the positives, like the return home
to Happy Valley.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Many of Sidney Crosby's Pittsburgh Penguins
teammates spent their summer playing golf, traveling and trying to
get over the team's loss to Tampa Bay in the opening round of the
NHL playoffs. Crosby spent his summer recovering from
concussion-like symptoms that have kept him from playing since
January. Crosby is practicing with the team but still hasn't been
cleared for contact. There remains no timetable for his return.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington
Capitals are teaming up to raise money for the families of the
Russian hockey players killed in a plane crash last month. The
teams will wear commemorative patches honoring the 28 Lokomotiv
Yaroslavl players who died when their plane went down in western
Russia when the rivals meet on October 13th at the Consol Energy
Center.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Philadelphia Phillies manager Charlie Manuel
expects a loose confident team to face the St. Louis Cardinals in
Game 3 this afternoon. The best-of-five series is tied at one game
each. Lefty Cole Hamels will head to the hill for the Phils. Jaime
Garcia will make his first postseason appearance for the Cardinals.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ben Roethlisberger's status is still
uncertain. The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback injured his left
foot in Sunday's 17-10 loss to Houston. Roethlisberger remained in
the game but walked out of the locker room afterward on crutches
with the foot in a protective boot.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles were a popular pick
to reach the Super Bowl after a free-agent spending spree brought
several big-name players to town. But the overhyped birds are off
to a 1-3 start. Their latest loss was their worst one yet. The
Eagles wasted a 20-point lead in a 24-23 home loss to San Francisco
on Sunday.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby will
start the season on injured reserve. The team placed the former MVP
on the injured list yesterday, meaning he'll have to miss at least
the first week of the season. Crosby is recovering from
concussion-like symptoms sustained last January. The Penguins open
the season on Thursday at Vancouver.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pitt running back Ray Graham says the Panthers
never gave up believing in new coach Todd Graham's system. Pitt
rolled over South Florida 44-17 last week, dominating the second
half to post its first victory over a Top 25 team in three years.
The Panthers snapped a two-game losing streak with the win and
started to play what Todd Graham is calling the latest version of
"Pitt football."

MOHNTON, Pa. (AP) - Jason Line collected his sixth win of the
season and the second in NHRA's playoffs during a rain-delayed
final round at the NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway yesterday.
Spencer Massey (Top Fuel), Robert Hight (Funny Car) and Arana Jr.
(Pro Stock Motorcycle) also collected victories at the NHRA Full
Throttle Drag Racing Series Event.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Renie Shields was promoted to associate
athletic director for varsity programs and senior women's
administrator yesterday at Saint Joseph's. She replaces Ellen Ryan,
who retired from that position after 37 years.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - John Jay knocked Carlos Ruiz backward with a
hard forearm shiver, and then the St. Louis Cardinals flipped this
series around. Albert Pujols hit a go-ahead single in the seventh
inning after Cliff Lee blew a four-run lead, and the Cardinals
rallied past the Philadelphia Phillies 5-4 last night to even their
NL playoff matchup at one game each.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Frank Gore's 12-yard run capped a
second-half comeback, lifting the San Francisco 49ers past the
Philadelphia Eagles 24-23 yesterday. The 49ers were unable to slow
Eagles quarterback Michael Vick. They did victimize Philadelphia's
porous defense throughout the second half, however. The Eagles were
damaged by the kicking game, too.

HOUSTON (AP) - Arian Foster rushed for 155 yards and the
go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter and the Houston Texans
overcame an injury to All-Pro Andre Johnson to beat the Pittsburgh
Steelers 17-10 yesterday. Johnson left in the second quarter with a
right hamstring injury and did not return to the game.

HOUSTON (AP) - Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has an
injured left foot and was wearing a walking boot when he left the
stadium after yesterday's 17-10 loss to the Houston Texans.
Roethlisberger says he was injured on the second-to-last series
when he was tackled from behind. He remained in the game but had
trouble walking afterward in the locker room.

DETROIT (AP) - Gustav Nyquist had two goals and an assist, and
the Detroit Red Wings beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 yesterday in
the final preseason game for both teams. Paul Martin and Tyler
Kennedy scored and Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 15 shots for the
Penguins.

CARSON, Calif. (AP) - Juan Pablo Angel's goal in the 90th minute
lifted Chivas USA to a 1-1 draw with the Philadelphia Union
yesterday. The Union moved into second place in the Eastern
Conference while Chivas USA got to four points behind the New York
Red Bulls for the final playoff berth.

MOHNTON, Pa. (AP) - Rain forced NHRA officials to postpone the
final eliminations yesterday in the NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove
Raceway until today. In Top Fuel, the Al-Anabi Racing duo of Del
Worsham and Larry Dixon were still in contention for the victory.
