PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins selected defenseman Simon Despres of the Saint John Sea Dogs in the first round of the NHL draft. The Penguins made the 6-foot-4, 205-pound Despres the 30th overall pick. Anaheim and Philadelphia also made news during the draft, announcing that veteran defenseman Chris Pronger is going to the Flyers. The Ducks receive right wing Joffrey Lupul, Luca Sbisa (LOO'-kuh suh-BEE'-suh), the 21st pick in tonight's draft and a first-round pick next year. Anaheim made the deal after learning last night that Scott
Niedermayer says he intends to return next season. A Ducks spokesman said the team hopes to sign Niedermayer to a new contract soon.

TORONTO (AP) - Ricky Romero held Philadelphia hitless for six innings and Aaron Hill hit a two-run double in the Toronto Blue Jays' 6-1 victory over the Phillies. The rookie left-hander gave up a hit to Chase Utley leading off the seventh and Jayson Werth followed with an infield single for the Phillies.

TORONTO (AP) - Phillies left-hander Cole Hamels was ejected from yesterday's game against the Blue Jays for arguing balls and strikes with plate umpire Mark Carlson. The ejection came after Hamels was removed for right-hander Chan Ho Park with two outs in the fifth.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Virgil Vasquez went six innings for his first major league win and the Pittsburgh Pirates got home runs from three unlikely power sources in a 5-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals. Vasquez allowed two runs and four hits while striking out seven.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - In the first regular season meeting
between the teams since last year's World Series, the Philadelphia
Phillies routed the Tampa Bay Rays 10-1. Chase Utley homered and
drove in four runs last night. Jamie Moyer pitched six strong
innings and John Mayberry hit a three-run homer for the Phillies.
The two teams play again tonight.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Phillies slugger Ryan Howard has
rejoined the team in Tampa Bay after being hospitalized over the
weekend with acute sinusitis. Howard missed Sunday's 2-1 loss to
Baltimore, ending his consecutive games streak at 343. It was the
longest active streak in the majors.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Cleveland Indians halted a six-game losing
streak, dodging yet another ninth-inning bullpen collapse to beat
the slumping Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4 last night. Adam LaRoche, who
homered to start the inning, flew out to right field on a 3-2 pitch
by Kerry Wood to end the game. The second game of the series is in
Pittsburgh tonight.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia 76ers have changed their
logo and colors to revive the traditional "76ers basketball" logo
and the red, white and blue color scheme. The new logo includes a
rectangular court-shaped enclosure around the ball with
"PHILADELPHIA" along the bottom and silver shaping the perimeter.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Fernando Bryant, a cornerback and former
first-round draft pick who played 10 NFL seasons with the
Pittsburgh Steelers and other teams is retiring. Bryant started 109
of the 112 NFL games he played, making seven interceptions and
recovering nine fumbles.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phillies slugger Ryan Howard could return to

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia 76ers are in their final
few days of preparation for the NBA draft on Thursday. They brought

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Baltimore Orioles completed a three-game
sweep of the slumping Philadelphia Phillies with a 2-1 victory
yesterday. Roberts hit an RBI single to center off Cole Hamels for
the winning run. The World Series champion Phillies have lost a
season-high six straight. The Phils will be off tonight.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ryan Howard's consecutive games streak ended
after the Phillies slugger was hospitalized for the second time
with flu symptoms. He did not play against the Baltimore Orioles
yesterday. The 2006 National League MVP played 343 straight games
since May 25, 2007. That's the longest streak of any current player
in the majors.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Now that his right knee is close to full
strength, Phillies closer Brad Lidge expects to be activated off
the disabled list this week. Lidge said he'd make at least one more
rehab appearance, tomorrow for Class-A Clearwater, then either be
activated or make a third rehab appearance if needed, Friday in
Toronto.

DENVER (AP) - The Colorado Rockies completed a sweep of the
Pittsburgh Pirates with a 5-4 victory yesterday. Since having their
11-game winning streak snapped, the Rockies have won five straight
and they improved to 18-5 under manager Jim Tracy. The Pirates are
off today.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Rich Hill pitched into the seventh inning and singled in the go-ahead run, leading the Baltimore Orioles to a 7-2 victory over the slumping Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night. The defending World Series champions have lost four straight and fell to 13-20 at home. But the Phillies lead the NL East because they're a major league-best 23-9 on the road.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phillies closer Brad Lidge has taken another step toward his return from the disabled list. He threw 42 pitches in a bullpen session Thursday and says his sprained right knee feels as good as it has in months. He could be back with the Phillies as early as next Tuesday, when they face the Rays in Florida.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed tight end David Johnson, their seventh-round draft pick, to a three-year contract. Johnson caught 22 passes for 356 yards and five touchdowns during his final season at Arkansas State. First-round pick Evander Hood and third-rounder Kraig Urbik are still unsigned.

TORONTO (AP) - Hockey legend Gordie Howe doesn't believe Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby intentionally failed to shake hands with some Detroit players after Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final. Howe says Crosby's natural shyness combined with getting caught up in the emotion of winning resulted in Crosby getting in line to shake hands after some Red Wings had left the ice.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State's Talor Battle will be playing point guard for the U.S. National basketball team at the World University Games in Serbia. The final roster includes the Nittany Lions' junior, who helped lead Penn State to the NIT championship this past season. Villanova's Corey Fisher also made the squad.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia TV sports anchor Gary Papa has died following a long battle with prostate cancer. He was 54. WPVI-TV officials say Papa died at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania on Friday, five years after announcing on-air that he was undergoing cancer treatment. Papa joined Action News in 1981.

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) - It was dawn-to-dusk golf at the 109th U.S. Open yesterday but they are still way behind schedule after rain washed out most of Thursday's play. Lucas Glover was the overnight leader at 6 under through 12 holes with Ricky Barnes one shot back as the leaders completed about half their second rounds before darkness fell.

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Defending U.S. Open champion Tiger Woods was among half the field who never began their second round yesterday and will get an early start today. But the weatherman is calling for a good chance of rain today and it's looking likely that this tournament will run at least until Monday to determine a U.S. Open champion.

SONOMA, Calif (AP) - Brian Vickers won his second straight NASCAR Sprint Cup pole qualifying and starts from the inside tomorrow at the Infineon Raceway road course event in wine country in northern California.
