PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phillies closer Brad Lidge has taken another step toward his return from the disabled list. He threw 42 pitches in a bullpen session Thursday and says his sprained right knee feels as good as it has in months. He could be back with the Phillies as early as next Tuesday, when they face the Rays in Florida.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed tight end David Johnson, their seventh-round draft pick, to a three-year contract. Johnson caught 22 passes for 356 yards and five touchdowns during his final season at Arkansas State. First-round pick Evander Hood and third-rounder Kraig Urbik are still unsigned.
TORONTO (AP) - Hockey legend Gordie Howe doesn't believe Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby intentionally failed to shake hands with some Detroit players after Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final. Howe says Crosby's natural shyness combined with getting caught up in the emotion of winning resulted in Crosby getting in line to shake hands after some Red Wings had left the ice.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State's Talor Battle will be playing point guard for the U.S. National basketball team at the World University Games in Serbia. The final roster includes the Nittany Lions' junior, who helped lead Penn State to the NIT championship this past season. Villanova's Corey Fisher also made the squad.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia TV sports anchor Gary Papa has died following a long battle with prostate cancer. He was 54. WPVI-TV officials say Papa died at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania on Friday, five years after announcing on-air that he was undergoing cancer treatment. Papa joined Action News in 1981.
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) - It was dawn-to-dusk golf at the 109th U.S. Open yesterday but they are still way behind schedule after rain washed out most of Thursday's play. Lucas Glover was the overnight leader at 6 under through 12 holes with Ricky Barnes one shot back as the leaders completed about half their second rounds before darkness fell.
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Defending U.S. Open champion Tiger Woods was among half the field who never began their second round yesterday and will get an early start today. But the weatherman is calling for a good chance of rain today and it's looking likely that this tournament will run at least until Monday to determine a U.S. Open champion.
SONOMA, Calif (AP) - Brian Vickers won his second straight NASCAR Sprint Cup pole qualifying and starts from the inside tomorrow at the Infineon Raceway road course event in wine country in northern California. Three-time defending series champion Jimmie Johnson was 11th and rookie Joey Logano was 12th. Five-time Sonoma winner Jeff Gordon was 13th.

Texas rallied with home runs by Connor Rowe and Cameron Rupp in the bottom of the ninth to beat Arizona State 4-3 and the Longhorns advance to play LSU in the best-of-three College World Series final starting Monday night.
