TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Juan Fernandez sank an off-balance
18-footer with under a second to play yesterday to give Temple a
wild 66-64 victory over Penn State. The win ends coach Fran
Dunphy's NCAA tournament record 11-game losing streak. It was the
Nittany Lions' first NCAA tournament appearance in a decade.
CLEVELAND (AP) - Villanova is hoping a little March magic can
rub off on them as they get ready to play George Mason this
afternoon. Former coach Rollie Massimino was a guest after the
Wildcats' practice yesterday. He led Villanova to its only national
championship in 1985.
WASHINGTON (AP) - Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun notched his
850th career victory last night as No. 3 seed UConn cruise past
Bucknell 81-52 in the NCAA tournament. Mike Muscala scored 14
points for 14th-seeded Bucknell, champions of the Patriot League.
ATLANTA (AP) - The Philadelphia Flyers overcame three one-goal
deficits, but Rob Schremp and Blake Wheeler scored for Atlanta in
the shootout, giving the Thrashers a crucial 4-3 victory last
night. Danny Briere scored two goals, including a tying shot with
1:17 left in regulation for the Eastern Conference-leading Flyers.
CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - Cliff Lee gave up home runs to Juan
Rivera and Edwin Encarnacion in a five-run fourth inning, and the
Philadelphia Phillies lost to the Toronto Blue Jays 7-6 yesterday.
Lee allowed five runs - three earned - and seven hits in four
innings. He has allowed six runs earned runs in his last two
starts.
BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) - Jake Fox hit a pair of two-run home runs
Thursday, and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Pittsburgh Pirates
13-3. Fox has eight homers, the most in the majors this spring
training. Pirates starter Ross Ohlendorf worked three innings and
gave up six runs on eight hits.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Penn State continued its impressive
late-season surge in the opening two rounds of the NCAA wrestling
championships at the Wells Fargo Center yesterday. The Nittany
Lions advanced seven wrestlers into the quarterfinals, ending the
night in first place in team points.
