LOS ANGELES (AP) - A four-point night from Mike Richards and 32 saves from Michael Leighton paced the Philadelphia Flyers to a 7-4 rout of the Los Angeles Kings last night. Claude Giroux also had a career-high three assists for the Flyers, who face the Ducks in Anaheim tonight.
VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) - Eighth-ranked Villanova took its heavyweight showdown with city-rival Temple last night, beating the number 25 Owls 78-74. Corey Stokes scored 24 points while Maalik Wayns scored 21. Lavoy Allen scored 22 points for the Owls. Nova is 11-1 while the Owls fall to 9-3.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Alex Bentley scored 19 points and Penn State rallied to beat 14th-ranked Iowa last night 68-59. The Hawkeyes led by seven with 6:33 to go before the Nittany Lions outscored them by 20-4 the rest of the way to get the win. Penn State goes to 12-3 with the win.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Michael Vick is unlikely to play Sunday when the Eagles host the Dallas Cowboys after missing practice yesterday with a quad injury. The Eagles are locked into the number 3 seed for the NFL playoffs. Vick suffered the injury on the first play of the Eagles' Tuesday night loss to the Vikings.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The NFL has trimmed its fine of Steelers linebacker James Harrison by $25,000 for his mid-October hit on Browns wide-out Mohamed Massaquoi. The league's appeals officer says he reduced the fine to $50,000 because he says Harrison has made an effort to adjust his tackling technique to play within the
rules.
DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Temple's women kept it close much of the night but fell to 3rd-ranked Duke last night, 71-64. Karima Christmas scored 20 points in the win to keep Duke undefeated. Qwedia Wallace scored 21 points to lead the Owls, who fell to 7-6
with loss.
STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - One of the greatest streaks in sports is over. After 90 victories over two and a-half seasons, the longest winning streak in college basketball ended with ninth-ranked Stanford upsetting top-ranked Connecticut 71-59 behind Jeanette Pohlen's 31 points.
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Marcus Jordan, son of legendary NBA great Michael Jordan, scored 22 of his 26 points in the second half to help No. 19 Central Florida rally to a 68-62 win over Princeton in the final of the UCF Holiday Classic. The 13-0 Knights are one of seven remaining Division 1 undefeated teams.
NEW YORK (AP) - The first college bowl game in New York City in 48 years proved to be a hit - especially for Syracuse. The Orange finished their season 8-5 with their first bowl victory since 2001 by holding off Kansas State 36-34 before a crowd of 38,274 at the big ballpark in the Bronx.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - A person familiar with the ruling tells The Associated Press that Michigan backup quarterback Tate Forcier is academically ineligible for the New Year's Day Gator Bowl against No. 21 Mississippi State. The school is saying only that Forcier "did not meet university standards."
BOSTON (AP) - Celtics star Kevin Garnett could miss two weeks with a strained right calf. Celts GM Danny Ainge says an MRI and a thorough examination showed Garnett's injury Wednesday night had nothing to do with his right knee, which was surgically
repaired after the 2008-09 season.
