PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Newly acquired Phillies righthander Roy
Oswalt will make his debut for Philadelphia tonight in the opener
of a weekend series in Washington. Oswalt is coming to the Phillies
in a trade that sends J.A. Happ and two prospects to Houston. The
32-year-old Oswalt was 6-12 despite a 3.24 ERA for Houston.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies have won their eighth straight,
beating Arizona 3-2 in extra innings last night at Citizens Bank
Park. After the Diamondbacks tied it in the ninth, the Phillies
rallied against Esmerling Vasquez in the 11th, when an RBI single
from Wilson Valdez with one out won it for the Phils.

DENVER (AP) - The Rockies have snapped their eight-game losing
streak with a 9-3 win over the Pirates. Colorado starter Ubaldo
Jimenez rebounded from two rough starts to pitch seven effective
innings. Neil Walker homered for the Pirates, who were trying for
their first three-game road sweep in two seasons.

DENVER (AP) - Pirates pitcher Ross Ohlendorf says he feels fine
after being hit in the head by a line drive and expects to make his
next start Monday. Ohlendorf was hit on the right side of the face

at Colorado.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - The Eagles and first-round pick Brandon

13th overall out of Michigan. The Eagles hold their first training
camp practice this afternoon.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Steelers have reached terms with five-time
Pro Bowl offensive tackle Flozell Adams on a two-year contract. The
Steelers could play the 35-year-old Adams at right tackle, or shift
him to his natural position of left tackle and move Max Starks to
the right side. Adams played 12 seasons with Dallas, but was cut
last spring.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ben Roethlisberger's pending suspension isn't
the Pittsburgh Steelers' only worry as they open training camp.
They also need to repair a defense that gave up leads in the fourth
quarter five times. The Steelers also want to keep linebacker
LaMarr Woodley from being distracted by his lack of a contract
extension.

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (AP) - The new indoor football team for western
Pennsylvania will be called the Johnstown Generals. The name was
announced yesterday. The Generals will begin playing in February as

DENVER (AP) - Zach Duke threw six solid innings to help the
Pittsburgh Pirates snap a four-game skid last night with a 4-2 win
over a reeling Colorado Rockies team. The Rockies returned home
from a disastrous 2-9 road trip and dropped their seventh straight
contest.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies are enjoying their longest
winning streak of the season after knocking off the Diamondbacks
9-5 for their sixth straight victory. Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth and
Cody Ransom all homered for the Phillies. The win puts Philadelphia
3-and-a-half games back of NL East-leading Atlanta.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins sat out
last night's game because of bruised left foot. The three-time
All-Star got hurt when he fouled a ball of his foot during

were negative and Rollins is listed as day-to-day.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Steelers might not know until late in
training camp whether quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's suspension
will be reduced from six to four games by NFL commissioner Roger
Goodell. Goodell plans to visit the Steelers' camp next week, but
the stop isn't specifically related to Roethlisberger's suspension.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Eagles have signed safety Nate Allen,

Capitals' Mike Knuble joined some teammates shooting pucks between
the goal posts.

TUCKER, Ga. (AP) - Michael Vick was a no show at his own
celebrity golf tournament in Georgia after probation officials

center in the fourth that was caught by a fan.

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Corey Hart hit a two-run homer in the ninth
inning to give the Brewers a dramatic 6-5 victory over the Pirates

complete game.

ALTOONA, Pa. (AP) - Pittsburgh lefthander Zach Duke set to make
his second rehabilitation start tomorrow for Double-A Altoona. Duke
is on the disabled list with a left elbow strain.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Brian Schneider's game-ending homer in the
12th inning gave the Phillies a 4-3 win over the NL Central-leading
Cincinnati Reds last night. Shane Victorino also had a solo homer
for the struggling Phillies, who had lost seven of 10. They
overcame another blown save by Brad Lidge to win this one.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies have activated reliever Ryan
Madson from the 60-day disabled list and sent left-hander Mike
Zagurski to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Madson broke his right big toe
kicking a chair after blowing a save at San Francisco on April
28th. Madson gave up a run in one inning last night against the
Reds.

OAKMONT, Pa. (AP) - Somebody forgot to remind Kelli Shean she's
an amateur. The University of Arkansas golfer playing in only her
second major professional tournament, shot a 1-under 70 to take the
clubhouse lead in the opening round of the U.S. Women's Open at
Oakmont yesterday. LPGA champion Christie Kerr finished the round
1-over and tied for eighth.

OAKMONT, Pa. (AP) - Michelle Wie has shot an 11-over 82 to play
herself out of contention after one round of the U.S. Women's Open.
She couldn't find the fairways, winding up in too many of Oakmont
Country Club's bunkers. Once she finally reached Oakmont's
infamously treacherous greens, her game got even worse.

NEW YORK (AP) - Manchester United will be bringing captain Gary
Neville and stars Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes on its North American
Tour. Manager Alex Ferguson also says that Darren Fletcher, Dimitar
Berbatov and Edwin Van der Sar will join the Premier League club as
it plays in Philadelphia, Toronto, Houston and Kansas City this
summer.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - Army and Penn will play in the
first game of a college basketball doubleheader December 4th before
Duke faces Butler in a rematch of last season's NCAA championship
game. The Army-Penn game at Izod Center starts at noon. Army and
Penn have met 32 times, with the Quakers leading 20-12.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - A Virginia prosecutor says that
Michael Vick was involved in a confrontation before a shooting
following his birthday bash and the case isn't closed. He says the
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback left the confrontation "with the
help and encouragement of some of his friends and supporters" and
left the scene "in the 3 to 5 minute range" before the shooting.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Braves knocked off the Phillies 7-5 last
night. The loss puts Philadelphia six games behind Atlanta with its
seventh loss in 10 games. Martin Prado had a pair of solo homers
and Matt Diaz also connected for the Braves, who roughed up Jamie
Moyer.

HOUSTON (AP) - The Astros doubled-up the Pirates 6-3 last night
in Houston. Pirates starter Daniel McCutchen (1-4) allowed three of
Houston's four homers in five innings of work.

HOUSTON (AP) - The Pirates have picked up right-handed reliever
Sean Gallagher from San Diego on Wednesday in exchange for cash.
The Pirates will make a corresponding roster move when Gallagher
joins the team. Gallagher had a 5.40 ERA in 15 relief appearances
for the Padres before he was designated for assignment on July 1st.
He had a 2.77 ERA in his last eight relief appearances with San
Diego.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Penguins have signed defenseman Andrew
Hutchinson to a two-way contract that will pay him $500,000 if he
plays in the NHL next season. Hutchinson has 135 games of NHL
experience with Dallas, Tampa Bay, Carolina and Nashville, getting
12 goals and 26 assists.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Inquirer reports Russian
news services are indicating the Flyers and Ukrainian free agent
forward Nikolai Zherdev have come to a deal. Zherdev played last
season in Russia. Boston, Toronto and Buffalo are other teams that
have reportedly offered him a contract.

OAKMONT, Pa. (AP) - There's something increasingly missing from
the U.S. Women's Open, Americans. An American victory in the
national championship is now a surprise. Cristie Kerr is the only
American to win in the last five years. Since 1995, there have been
nearly as many South Korean champions as U.S. winners. The Women's
Open tees off this morning at Oakmont Country Club near Pittsburgh.

NEW YORK (AP) - Amare Stoudemire (ah-MAR'-ay STOO'-duh-my-ur) is
heading to the New York Knicks, and both sides are hoping he's not
coming alone. The Knicks say they intend to sign Stoudemire to a
contract later this week that could be worth $100 million over five
years and the former Phoenix center says he's working on recruiting
fellow free agents LeBron James and Dwyane Wade to New York with
him.

UNDATED (AP) - If either LeBron James or Dwyane Wade knows where
they will be playing in the NBA next season, they weren't talking
yesterday. James was at a camp in his hometown of Akron, Ohio, was
Wade was meeting with the owner of the Miami Heat, which seemed
prepared to offer the free-agent guard some $127 million to stay in
south Florida the next six seasons.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - At just about the halfway point of the
baseball season, Roy Halladay is halfway to being a 20-game winner.
The Philadelphia fireballer tossed a five-hitter, needing just 93
pitches to hurl the Phillies to a 3-1 win over Atlanta last night.

CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago White Sox have won 19 of their last
24 to climb within one game of the American League Central lead
behind Detroit and Minnesota. Carlos Quentin hit two home runs and
Gavin Floyd pitched seven solid innings to lead the White Sox' 9-2
win over the Los Angeles Angels.

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) - Uruguay plays Netherlands today
in a World Cup semifinal (2:30 p.m. start Eastern time) with the
winner advancing to Sunday's championship. Tomorrow, Spain takes on
Germany in the other semifinal.

NEWTON SQUARE, Pa. (AP) - Five days after a surprising meltdown, Justin Rose is atop the leaderboard at Aronimink. Rose played bogey-free yesterday and shot a 6-under 64 to build a one-shot lead over Jason Day and Charlie Wi at the AT&T National. Rose led last week's Travelers Championship by three-shots in the final round but wound up losing.

NEWTON SQUARE, Pa. (AP) - Tiger Woods hit the ball well and had little to show for it with a round of par 70, leaving him at 3-over 143 after two rounds of the AT&T National. Woods made a few careless bogeys, including a 30-inch putt that he missed on his 17th hole.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed former Tampa Bay forward Ryan Craig to a two-way contract that will pay him $500,000 if he plays in the NHL next season. The 28-year-old Craig had 23 goals and 25 assists in 73 games last season with Norfolk, Tampa Bay's top farm team. He has 32 goals and 31 assists in 184 NHL games.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Former Steelers center Dermontti Dawson has filed for bankruptcy, saying he is more than $69 million in debt. Dawson played 13 seasons in the NFL. The Lexington
Herald-Leader reports that Dawson's debts are mostly business-related, and much of it appears to be from real estate ventures.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ross Ohlendorf became the third Pirates starting pitcher in as many days to win for the first time this season. He held the slumping Philadelphia Phillies to five hits over seven innings in Pittsburgh's 2-0 victory. The Phillies' Jamie Moyer was masterful at age 47, but two infield singles and his throwing error figured in the loss.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Phillies manager Charlie Manuel will be picking nine National League players this weekend for the All-Star game July 13 in Anaheim. Manuel knows his selections will be debated among fans, players and other managers. But he says he plans to spend as much time as possible this weekend choosing what he says are "the right people."

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Philadelphia Eagles' quarterback Michael
Vick says he had "nothing to do" with a shooting following his
birthday celebration in Virginia Beach last week. Vick says in a
statement provided to the AP that he "left the restaurant prior to
it occurring and did not witness what happened." He adds that he's
been "completely truthful" about the incident.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Daniel McCutchen became the second Pirates
rookie in as many days to win for the first time this season as the
Bucs beat the banged up Phillies 3-2 at PNC Park last night.
Rookies Jose Tabata and Pedro Alvarez drove in a run each as the
Pirates beat a team with a winning record for only the second time
in 33 games since May 25th.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Phillies star second baseman Chase Utley will
be out at least eight weeks after having surgery on his injured
right thumb. Utley isn't expected to return until September. The
operation was performed yesterday in New York. Trainers say Utley
must wear a splint on the thumb for five weeks before he even
begins rehabilitation.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The injuries keep on coming for the Phillies.
Catcher Brian Schneider was removed from last night's game in
Pittsburgh with an apparent right hand injury. Trainers examined
Schneider's hand while the Pirates were batting during the second
inning. Schneider was lifted before he would have batted in the
fourth inning.

NEW YORK (AP) - Phillies manager Charlie Manuel was suspended
for last night's game for making contact with an umpire. Manuel was
ejected in the top of the 10th inning during Tuesday's 9-6 victory
over the Reds in Cincinnati. C.B. Bucknor motioned that Manuel
bumped his forehead with the brim of his cap while he complained.

NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. (AP) - Arjun Atwal ran off three straight
birdies early in his round at Aronimink Golf Club and wound up in a
four-way tie for the lead with a 4-under 66 on a gorgeous day in
the Philadelphia suburbs. Tiger Woods let a decent round get away
from him with an awful finish and shot 73 to finish toward the
bottom of the pack.

NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. (AP) - Tiger Woods says he has met with
federal authorities investigating a Canadian doctor accused of
distributing a human growth hormone. Woods says the meeting took
place last week in Orlando and lasted a couple of hours. He said he
cooperated with them and answered all their questions.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Flyers have signed
defenseman Braydon Coburn to a contract extension and acquired
defenseman Andrej Meszaros from Tampa Bay. The Flyers gave up a
second-round pick in the 2012 draft for Meszaros, who has 33 points
in two NHL seasons. Philadelphia also announced the signing of
defenseman Sean O'Donnell and forward Jody Shelley.
