in the seventh inning with the Giants trailing by two runs, just a
day after San Francisco purchased his contract.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Melky Cabrera, Eric Hosmer and Brayan

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Cliff Lee and the Philadelphia Phillies
proved to be too much for the Cincinnati Reds yesterday. The Phils
beat the Reds 10-4 at Citizen Bank Park. Both teams were playing
with little rest following Wednesday's 19-inning marathon that
ended at 1:19 a.m., after 6 hours, 11 minutes and 600 total
pitches.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies activated reliever Jose
Contreras from the 15-day disabled list before yesterday's game
against the Cincinnati Reds. Contreras had been out since April
25th with a grade one strain in his right elbow. He had been the
closer before getting hurt, but he will now set up for Ryan Madson.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Coming off a day of rest, the Pittsburgh
Pirates will kick off their series today against the Chicago Cubs.
They'll meet in Chicago for the first time since the first series
of the season. Both teams are fighting for relevance in a highly
contested National League Central race.

UNDATED (AP) - After losing to St. John's yesterday 6-4,
Pittsburgh baseball will face Louisville today. The winner will
advance to the semifinals of the Big East tournament in Clearwater,
Florida. Meantime, Minnesota put an end to Penn State's run
yesterday in the Big Ten tournament in Columbus, Ohio. The Golden
Gophers defeated the Nittany Lions 8-2.

BUFORD, Ga. (AP) - Cornerback Ike Taylor says he doesn't mind
the uncertainty of free agency in the NFL lockout. Taylor says he
isn't worried about his next contract, though the two-time Super
Bowl champion with the Steelers says Pittsburgh is "like home to
me."

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jimmy Rollins, Placido Polanco and Raul

attitude brought by new manager Clint Hurdle.

NEW YORK (AP) - Former Giants receiver Plaxico Burress is

lockout ends.

State athletic department familiar with the situation, Coach Ed
DeChellis has resigned to take the vacant job at Navy. DeChellis

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jason Giambi became the second-oldest player
to hit three homers in a game. He tied his career high with seven
RBIs, leading the Colorado Rockies past the Philadelphia Phillies
7-1 last night. Jhoulys Chacin was the beneficiary of Giambi's
turn-back-the-clock power display. Chacin allowed one run and four
hits, striking out a season-high nine in seven innings.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Colorado left fielder Carlos Gonzalez left
last night's game against the Phillies after getting injured in the

Martinez's head in the top of the inning. He stopped abruptly
between second and third, but didn't seem injured.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phillies right-hander Joe Blanton was pulled
minutes from his start against the Colorado Rockies last night.
There was no immediate word on Blanton's injury. He missed two
starts with an elbow injury and was 1-1 in two starts after
returning from the disabled list.

CINCINNATI (AP) - James McDonald pitched into the seventh inning
yesterday and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-3
for a 2-game sweep. The Pirates arrived in town with a six-game
losing streak and came away with their first series sweep in
Cincinnati since 2003.

CINCINNATI (AP) - Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Ross Ohlendorf
had another successful session of long toss yesterday at the Great
American Ball Park in Cincinnati. Ohlendorf extended himself out to
a distance of 90 feet. He says his right shoulder has been
"feeling really good." The pitcher has been in the disabled list
since April 9th.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell held a
conference call yesterday afternoon with Steelers season ticket
holders. Goodell addressed a number of issues. But when it came
time to talk about whether there will be NFL football in 2011 and
will there be a full season of it, Goodell didn't have a definitive
answer.

NEW YORK (AP) - Real Madrid will play a preseason exhibition
game against Major League Soccer's Philadelphia Union on July 23rd
at Lincoln Financial Field. The match is part of the Spanish's

MONTREAL (AP) - Bernard Hopkins knows he'll be seen as the bad
guy when he steps into the ring with local favorite Jean Pascal. He

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Cole Hamels threw eight impressive innings
and Jimmy Rollins drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly.

last night to snap a four-game losing streak. Hamels allowed one
run and five hits, striking out eight for his first career win
against the Rockies.

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. (AP) - Authorities in Washington say they've
recovered a stolen 2008 World Series ring belonging to Philadelphia
Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick. The Skagit Valley Herald reports
Kendrick's ring was stolen when burglars broke into his unoccupied
house in late March. Yesterday, Snohomish County deputies recovered
the ring in a swamp near Bothell, Washington.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Phillies manager Charlie Manuel has fond
memories of Harmon Killebrew. His former Minnesota Twins teammate
and longtime friend passed away Tuesday after a battle with
esophageal cancer. Killebrew was 74. Manuel says he will be missed.

CINCINNATI (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Cincinnati
Reds 5-0 last night, ending a 6-game slide. Charlie Morton shut

his second career shutout. And Pedro Alvarez hit a three-run homer.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Dallas, Fort Worth and cities in between
are seeking reimbursement for Super Bowl costs. The cities have
asked the state for reimbursement of security costs and other local

PITTSBURGH (AP) - University of Pittsburgh guard Ashton Gibbs
has taken his name out of consideration for the NBA Draft. Gibbs
says he's decided to put his professional dreams on hold and return
to Pitt for his senior year. Gibbs made the decision Saturday
afternoon, after receiving feedback from NBA general managers and
scouts.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Derek Lowe took a no-hitter into the seventh
inning and the Atlanta Braves won their sixth straight game,
beating Philadelphia 5-0 despite Cliff Lee's 16 strikeouts for the
Phillies. Shane Victorino singled to start the seventh for the
first hit off Lowe, and Placido Polanco followed with a double.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Atlanta's Derek Lowe limped off the mound
after allowing his first two hits of the game to start the seventh
inning against the Philadelphia Phillies. Lowe appeared to injure
himself when he hit a single in the top of the seventh and advanced
to second on Chipper Jones' hit.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Right-hander Julio Teheran, the top prospect
in Atlanta's system, will make his major league debut against the
Philadelphia Phillies tonight. Teheran, 20, is 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA
in five starts with Triple-A Gwinnett this season, striking out 25
against eight walks while limiting opponents to a .118 batting
average.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies placed pitcher Roy Oswalt on
the 15-day disabled list last night because he has an injured back.
The move is retroactive to April 27, meaning Oswalt is eligible to
return next Thursday. To take his place, the Phillies recalled
right-hander Scott Mathieson from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Injured Phillies second baseman Chase Utley
is going to extended spring training. General manager Ruben Amaro
Jr. said before last night's game against the Atlanta Braves that
Utley will play at least one inning in a game at Dunedin, Fla.,
today.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Former New York Mets and Philadelphia
Phillies outfielder Lenny Dykstra has been indicted by a Los
Angeles federal grand jury in a bankruptcy fraud case. The
48-year-old filed for bankruptcy in 2009, and is accused of later
stealing and selling property from an $18.5 million estate.
Dykstra's attorney says no fraud was committed.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Neil Walker hit his fourth homer for the
Pittsburgh Pirates in a 3-2 loss to the Houston Astros last night.
Houston managed only five hits over seven innings against Paul

BOSTON (AP) - For the second straight season, the Flyers have
found themselves in an 0-3 deficit to the Boston Bruins in the
Eastern Conference semifinals. Zdeno Chara and David Krejci scored
in the opening 63 seconds to set the pace for Boston in a 5-1 win
over Philadelphia last night. Last year the Flyers were able to win
four straight to take the series in seven games.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Ryan Doumit's grand slam highlighted a six-run
third inning and Kevin Correia beat his old team yesterday when the
Pirates won 7-4 to take two of three from the Padres. The Pirates
are playing well away from Pittsburgh. They've won five road series
already, one more than they did all of last year.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies beat the Nationals 7-4 last
night. Vance Worley threw six sharp innings and Raul Ibanez homered
and had three hits. Ibanez snapped an 0-for-35 slump with a pair of
doubles on Tuesday, and is now 5 for 7 since the skid. The NL
East-leading Phillies have won 10 of 13.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies have activated left-hander J.C.
Romero from the disabled list and optioned right-hander David
Herndon to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Romero was originally placed on
the DL on April 19 with a right calf strain. He has a 3.86 ERA in
seven appearances this season. Herndon had a 9.28 ERA in 11 games.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall has
written a "clarification" of his comments made Monday on Twitter
regarding the death of Osama bin Laden. In an in-depth blog post,
Mendenhall writes that he does not support bin Laden, and that he
aimed to clear things up, for not only himself, but also the
Steelers.

AIGLE, Switzerland (AP) - The International Cycling Union and
its current and former president have started legal action against
disgraced rider Floyd Landis over his allegations of doping in the
sport. The UCI says it has "lodged a case" in Swiss courts over
the Lancaster County native's "repeated, serious attacks" against
its president Pat McQuaid and predecessor Hein Verbruggen.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State and Ohio State are taking
their Big Ten grudge match to the volleyball court. The border
rivals meet tonight in State College in an NCAA men's volleyball
championship semifinal. The other semifinal pits preseason favorite
and top seed Southern California against upstart UC-Santa Barbara.
The winners meet Saturday night.

RADNOR, Pa. (AP) - Police say Charlotte Bobcats forward Dante
Cunningham faces a drug-possession charge after police found a
small amount of marijuana in his pickup during a traffic stop in
suburban Philadelphia. Radnor Township Police say officers
responding to a reckless driving complaint on Friday stopped the
former Villanova star. Colarulo says officers smelled marijuana and
recovered a suspicious substance after Cunningham consented to a
search.

CHICAGO (AP) - Minnesota left-hander Francisco Liriano
(leer-ee-AH'-noh) is celebrating throwing the first no-hitter of
the Major League season, and sixth in Twins history. Liriano got
Adam Dunn to line out to shortstop for the final out in the Twins'
1-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox last night.

UNDATED (AP) - The Miami Heat are going to Boston up 2-0 in
their Eastern Conference semifinal after last night's 102-91 win
over the Celtics behind 35 points from LeBron James. In the Western
Conference, Oklahoma City squared its series at a game apiece by
beating the Memphis Grizzlies 111-102.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A source tells The Associated Press that Los
Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin will be named the NBA's
Rookie of the Year today. Griffin's victory is absolutely no
surprise after his spectacular season in which he averaged 22.5
points, 12.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists and becoming one of the NBA's
most fearsome and entertaining dunkers.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - The Tampa Bay Lightning can finish
their sweep of the Washington Capitals tonight at St. Pete Times
Forum. Steven Stamkos and Ryan Malone scored 24 seconds apart in
the third period as Tampa Bay rallied for a 4-3 victory that gives
the Lightning a 3-0 series lead.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Ryan Kesler scored his second power-play
goal at 10:45 of overtime, and the Vancouver Canucks beat the
Nashville Predators 3-2 and grabbed a 2-1 lead in the Western
Conference semifinal series last night. Fans in the sellout crowd
reacted angrily, throwing towels and other debris onto the ice
after an overtime penalty was called on the home team in OT.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - David Krejci scored 14:00 into overtime and
the Bruins beat the Flyers 3-2 last night to take a 2-0 lead in the
Eastern Conference semifinal series. James van Riemsdyk had a
breakout game for the Flyers. He scored two goals and was all over
the ice trying to help the Flyers win at least one at home.
Instead, they have to rally from another deficit.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger sat out Game
2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against Boston with an
undisclosed injury. The former NHL MVP had hand surgery in March.
He also missed time with a foot injury and was limited to just 50
games this season.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Garrett Jones and Chris Snyder each hit a
two-run homer in the first inning to back James McDonald, and the
Pirates beat the Padres 4-3 last night. The Pirates snapped a
nine-game losing streak to San Diego dating to 2009. They've won
four of six overall, including consecutive games for the first time
since April 17th and 18th.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates are reportedly discussing a
long-term contract extension with outfielder Andrew McCutchen. The
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports McCutchen was vocal about his
desire to stay with the Pirates for his "whole career."

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies had yesterday off after their
14 inning loss Sunday night to the New York Mets. They'll be
opening a series today at Citizens Bank Park against the Nationals.
Cole Hamels is slated to start the opener for the Phillies while
Livan Hernandez is scheduled on the mound for the Nationals.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Roy Oswalt is scheduled to return to the
Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday and could start Saturday. The
right-hander left the team last Wednesday to be with his family in
tornado-ravaged Mississippi. Left-hander Cole Hamels will start
today against the Washington Nationals in place of Oswalt.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phillies right fielder Domonic Brown, who
broke his right hamate bone in spring training, has begun a rehab
assignment with Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Second baseman Chase Utley,
out all season with a knee injury, played a three-inning simulated
game Sunday and is still listed as day-to-day.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Dallas Mavericks closed with a 10-2 run
to upset the two-time NBA champion L.A. Lakers 96-94 in the opener
of that Western Conference semifinal. Dallas rallied from a
16-point second-half deficit behind Dirk Nowitzki's
28 points and 14 rebounds.

CHICAGO (AP) - Joe Johnson's 34 points led the Atlanta Hawks to
a 103-95 upset of the Chicago Bulls, the team that finished with
the best regular-season record in the NBA's Eastern Conference.
That gives the Hawks a 1-0 series lead heading into Game 2
Wednesday night in Chicago.

CHICAGO (AP) - A person familiar with the decision says Derrick
Rose has become the NBA's youngest MVP and joined Michael Jordan as
the only Bulls players to win the award. A formal announcement has
not been made, but that could come today.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Boston Bruins are going home with a 2-0
lead in their NHL Eastern Conference semifinal. David Krejci
(KRAY'-chee) scored just over 14 minutes into OT and Tim Thomas
made 46 saves in the Bruins' 3-2 victory over Philadelphia.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Andre Ethier (EE'-thee-ur) is halfway to
tying Joe DiMaggio's record 56-game hitting streak in 1941. The
L.A. Dodgers outfielder had an RBI single in the fifth inning last
night, extending his hitting streak to 28 games - the longest by a
Dodger since Willie Davis had a team-record 31-game streak in 1969.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ronny Paulino had a career-high five hits in
his first start for the Mets, including a go-ahead double in the
14th inning, and New York beat the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1.
Taylor Buchholz, one of six Mets pitchers used, pitched two
scoreless innings in relief to help New York snap a three-game
losing streak.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Fans at the Mets-Phillies game began
chanting "U-S-A! U-S-A!" as the news of Osama bin Laden's death
spread through Citizens Bank Park last night. People could be
spotted all over the ballpark checking their phones as news that
the United States had killed the mastermind behind the Sept. 11
attacks was breaking.

DENVER (AP) - Charlie Morton pitched into the sixth inning for
his third win, Garrett Jones had two hits and three RBIs and the
Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Colorado Rockies 8-4. Xavier Paul,
Andrew McCutchen, Lyle Overbay and Pedro Alvarez also had two hits
each for the Pirates, who took two of three in the series.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Tim Thomas was invisible in last year's
playoffs, never called on to stop a Flyers' comeback that knocked
Boston out of the conference semifinals. Only an injury could keep
Thomas out of Boston's net this postseason. Thomas rebounded from
offseason hip surgery and won 35 games. Game 2 is today in
Philadelphia.
