PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Pedro Feliz hit a grand slam, J.A. Happ
pitched effectively into the sixth inning and the Philadelphia
Phillies moved closer toward clinching their third straight NL East
title with a 7-4 victory over the Houston Astros last night. Happ
is the first rookie to win 12 games for Philadelphia since Jim
Owens in 1959. Both teams play each other again tonight.

CHICAGO (AP) - Ryan Dempster pitched a five-hitter for his third
career shutout, Jeff Baker had a two-run double and the Chicago
Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-0 last night.Derrek Lee added a
two-run single for the Cubs, who have won seven of nine games,
which guarantees them their third straight winning season. Both
teams play a doubleheader today.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jeremiah Trotter is back with the
Philadelphia Eagles after a year away from the NFL. The four-time
Pro Bowl linebacker signed with the team yesterday. A third-round
pick by the Eagles in 1998, Trotter went to Pro Bowls in 2000 and
2001. Also, in other Eagles news, the team released quarterback
Jeff Garcia.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers receiver Limas Sweed may have dropped
his way onto the bench. Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin says he may
deactivate Sweed, the team's second-round pick last year, for
Sunday night's game against the San Diego Chargers where he dropped
a pass in the end zone in the third quarter. The Steelers fell to
1-2 with Sunday's loss.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Antti Miettinen scored the deciding goal in
a shootout to give the Minnesota Wild a 5-4 victory over the
Philadelphia Flyers in the final preseason game for both teams
yesterday. Danny Briere and Mike Richards had the shootout goals
for the Flyers.

MIAMI (AP) - Pinch-hitter Brett Carroll capped a two-run rally
against closer Brad Lidge in the ninth inning with an RBI single,
giving the Florida Marlins a 7-6 victory over the Philadelphia
Phillies last night. Jorge Cantu tied it with a single off Lidge,
who blew his major league-leading 11th save opportunity. The
Phillies are in Milwaukee starting tonight.

MIAMI (AP) - Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz has been sent to
Philadelphia for an MRI on his sprained left wrist.Phillies general

team in Milwaukee and is expected to return to the field in
three-to-five days.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Joey Votto went 4 for 5 and scored three runs,
Homer Bailey allowed two runs and the Cincinnati Reds continued the
Pittsburgh Pirates' losing with a 12-2 win last night. Brandon
Phillips, Scott Rolen, Jay Bruce, Laynce Nix and Corky Miller each
had two RBIs. The Pirates are 3-22 in their past 25. The series in
Pittsburgh ends this afternoon.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Donovan McNabb did not practice yesterday
because of a broken rib that forced him to miss the Eagles' 48-22
loss to New Orleans last Sunday. Kevin Kolb would make his second
straight start if McNabb can't play against Kansas City this week.
Coach Andy Reid isn't sure if Jeff Garcia or Michael Vick would be
the backup quarterback.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State's Sean Lee hopes to play in
Saturday's Big Ten opener against Iowa, though the standout
linebacker is unsure when he'll return to practice. The Nittany
Lions' defensive leader said yesterday that the left knee he

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Kevin Kolb will make his second straight
start for the Philadelphia Eagles if Donovan McNabb can't play
against Kansas City. Coach Andy Reid isn't sure whether Jeff Garcia
or Michael Vick would be the backup quarterback in that scenario.
Vick is eligible to play for the first time in a regular season
game this Sunday.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Chase Headley's career-high fifth hit of the
game drove in the go-ahead run in the 11th inning and the San Diego
Padres won their third straight over the Pittsburgh Pirates, 11-6
last night. Headley hit a line drive into off Jeff Karstens to help
the Padres to their eighth win in 12 games. The Pirates are at home
tonight against Cincinnati.

MIAMI (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies play a double header
today down in Miami against the Florida Marlins. One of the games
was originally supposed to be played last night. But the Marlins
share the same stadium with the Miami Dolphins, who played the
Baltimore Colts last night in Monday Night Football. That forced
the Phillies and Marlins to play 2 games today.

MONTREAL (AP) - In preseason hockey action, Brian Gionta had two
goals and an assist to lead the Montreal Canadiens to a 4-3 win
over the Pittsburgh Penguins last night. Sergei Gonchar, Evgeni
Malkin and Bill Guerin scored for Pittsburgh, which fell to 1-2
during the preseason.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - No. 5 Penn State's star linebacker
Sean Lee has a sprained left knee. A team spokesman says his
availability for practice is day to day. Lee appeared to hurt the
knee during the first half of last week's 31-6 win over Temple. He
stayed in the game until midway through the fourth quarter, when he
limped off to the sideline.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A healthy Donovan McNabb may not have
mattered against Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints. Brees
tossed three more touchdown passes, helping the Saints beat the
Philadelphia Eagles 48-22 yesterday. Making his first NFL start for
an injured McNabb, Kevin Kolb had a decent performance. He threw
for 391 yards and two touchdowns.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Eagles running back Brian Westbrook has a
sprained right ankle and he hopes he'll be able to play next week.
Westbrook had his ankle taped in the third quarter of
Philadelphia's loss to New Orleans yesterday. He had 52 yards
rushing on 13 attempts. Westbrook says the ankle feels sore. The
Eagles play Kansas City next week.

CHICAGO (AP) - Jay Cutler came through with a big pass to Devin
Hester on third down, to help lift the Chicago Bears to a 17-14
victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers yesterday. Cutler's home game
was a big improvement over his debut with the Bears. He finished
with 236 yards. That was enough to offset a solid performance by
Ben Roethlisberger.

ATLANTA (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies ended rookie Tommy
Hanson's streak of 19 consecutive scoreless innings, beating
Atlanta 4-2 yesterday and damaging the Braves' faint NL wild-card
hopes. Brad Lidge pitched another shaky ninth inning but posted his
31st save. The NL East-leading Phillies took two of three in the
series and are off today.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Kevin Correia continued his strong September,
pitching seven strong innings and the San Diego Padres shutout the
Pittsburgh Pirates 4-0 yesterday. Correia allowed six hits, did not
walk a batter and struck out five. Meanwhile, Heath Bell struck out
the last two batters for his National League-leading 39th save in
44 opportunities.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Friday's Games

ATLANTA (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies overcame a shortened start by rookie J.A. Happ to end Atlanta's seven-game winning streak with a 9-4 victory. Philadelphia snapped the Braves' longest stretch of consecutive victories since July 2006, dropping Atlanta 8 1/2 games back in the National League East and hurting their fading wild-card chances. Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino was "feeling under the weather" and was held out of the lineup Friday night against the Braves. Manager Charlie Manuel started Ben Francisco in center field, batting in Victorino's usual No. 2 spot in the order. Manuel declined to elaborate when asked about Victorino.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Charlie Morton allowed one run in seven innings, helping the last-place Pittsburgh Pirates win 5-1 over the San Diego Padres. Morton shook off a rough first inning to allow only six hits and a walk to win for only the second time since July 18. The Pirates won for only the third time in their past 20 games.

HILADELPHIA (AP) - Cole Hamels is again pitching like
Philadelphia's October ace. Hamels took a perfect game into the
sixth inning, matching a season high 10 strikeouts and leading the
Phillies to a 4-2 win over the Washington Nationals last night. The
Phillies are on the road to play the Atlanta Braves, a team which
has won 7 games in a row.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phillies reliever Chan Ho Park will miss two
to three weeks with a strained right hamstring. Phillies assistant
general manager Scott Proefrock says Park will report to
Clearwater, Fla., for treatment. Park, who is 3-3 with a 4.43 ERA
in 45 games this year, left yesterday's win over Washington after
pitching a scoreless eighth inning.

LONDON, Ontario (AP) - In preseason hockey, Lee Stempniak and
rookie Nazem Kadri scored in the first period and the Toronto Maple
Leafs cruised to a 4-0 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers last
night. Both teams struggled on the power play, combining to go 0
for 9.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Eagles are holding out hope that
quarterback Donovan McNabb might be able to play in their home
opener against the New Orleans Saints. Eagles offensive coordinator
Marty Morninweg said before yesterday's practice that McNabb has
been "working hard" and "doing everything in his power to get
back out there."

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles will honor former
quarterback Randall Cunningham at halftime of their game Sept. 27
against the Kansas City Chiefs. The four-time Pro Bowl quarterback
played for the Eagles from 1985-95, and will be joined at the
ceremony by his wife, Felicity, his 4 children and brother Sam, who
played for the New England Patriots.

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Lawyers for Steelers Quarterback Ben
Roethlisberger have filed new documents claiming that the woman who
accuses him of raping her at a Lake Tahoe hotel-casino concocted
the story in part to try to shield herself from possible layoffs at
the resort. Roethlisberger denies the rape allegation.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies continue to
dominate, beating the Washington Nationals 6-1 last night. Joe
Blanton tossed six scoreless innings and Jayson Werth hit a grand
slam for the Phillies. The NL East-leading Phillies reduced their
magic number for clinching the division title to 11. They play the
Nationals again tonight.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Matt Kemp hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in
the sixth inning, Ronnie Belliard added a solo shot and the Los
Angeles Dodgers beat the last-place Pittsburgh Pirates 3-1
yesterday to complete a three-game sweep. The Dodgers' win left
them 29 games above .500. The Pirates are off today before starting
a series with San Diego tomorrow.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb did not
practice yesterday because of his cracked rib. Coach Andy Reid says
McNabb is making progress. He also says it is still too early to
determine if McNabb will start Sunday's game against New Orleans.
Reid again made clear that Kevin Kolb will start against the Saints
if McNabb can't play.

DETROIT (AP) - In the preseason hockey opener for the
Philadelphia Flyers, Kris Draper, Jamie Tardif and Jeremy Williams
scored to lift the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-1 win over Philadelphia
last night. James Van Riemsdyk scored for Philadelphia and Flyers'
goalie Ray Emery made 23 saves in two periods. Brian Boucher
stopped eight shots.

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - A judge has denied a motion to move the
civil sexual assault case against Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback
Ben Roethlisberger and Lake Tahoe casino employees from Reno to
Douglas County. A District Judge yesterday ruled that Reno was a
proper venue.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Los Angeles Dodgers opened their
homestand by beating up on the Pittsburgh Pirates in a 6-2 victory.
Orlando Hudson had three hits and drove in two late runs as the
NL-leading Dodger got hits from all eight starting position
players. The Pirates have lost 15 of the last 17 games and face the
Dodgers again tonight.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Eagles coach Andy Reid confirms the team has
signed quarterback Jeff Garcia, a 10-year veteran who played for
Philadelphia in 2006. The Eagles needed a backup quarterback in
case McNabb, who suffered a broken rib in Philadelphia's 38-10 win
over Carolina Sunday, is not able to play this week against the New
Orleans Saints.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu
doesn't need knee surgery and says "the best case scenario" is
that he will be back in three to six weeks as expected. Polamalu is
one of the NFL's best defensive players. He tore the medial
collateral ligament in his left knee in last Thursday's win over
Tennessee on a blocked field goal.

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - A lawyer says an affidavit from a woman
who is accusing Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger of rape
shouldn't be allowed as part of the court record in the case. An
attorney for seven Harrah's Lake Tahoe employees also named as
defendants in the woman's lawsuit, said the woman's affidavit
contains "nothing more or less than media grandstanding."

VOORHEES, N.J.(AP) - Boxing great Joe Frazier visited the
Philadelphia Flyers training camp to visit with goalie Ray Emery.
The goalie paid tribute to the boxing great by having the images of
Philly greats Frazier, Bernard Hopkins and fictional Rocky Balboa
painted on his mask. Frazier signed a copy of "The Thrilla in
Manilla" DVD for him.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies hit five solo home
runs last night during their 5-3 win over the Washington Nationals.
The Phillies have become the 12th team in major league history with
four players who've hit at least 30 homeruns. Philadelphia
continues its series with the Washington Nationals in the nation's
capital tonight.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies hit five solo home
runs and became the 12th team in major league history with a
30-homer foursome in last night's 5-3 win over the Washington
Nationals.Raul Ibanez went long for the 29th and 30th times this
season and Chase Utley hit No. 30, joining Ryan Howard (38) and
Jayson Werth in Philadelphia's 30-homer club.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Brad Lidge's job as closer for the
Philadelphia Phillies is on shakier ground than ever after another
rough ninth inning last night. Before the game, Manuel gave a vote
of confidence in Lidge, who has 10 blown saves this year. But after
the game, Manuel wasn't so sure, saying it's hard to tell what
he'll do the next time the Phillies have a save opportunity.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Aramis Ramirez, Geovany Soto and Kosuke
Fukudome had two-run hits in a record-tying first inning and the
Chicago Cubs handed the hapless Pittsburgh Pirates their 11th loss
in 12 games, 9-4 last night. Chicago tied a major league record
with eight consecutive hits to start the game. The Pirates finish
their series with the Cubs this afternoon.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles have signed veteran
tight end Alex Smith. The Eagles signed Smith to a one-year
contract yesterday and released tight end Tony Curtis. Smith had
129 catches for 1,252 yards and 11 touchdowns in four seasons with
Tampa Bay. He was traded in the offseason to the New England
Patriots, who released him Saturday.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Speaking to a group of high school students,
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick offered himself up as
a cautionary tale of the dangers of peer pressure. He spoke to
about 200 freshmen on their first day at Nueva Esperanza Academy, a
North Philadelphia charter school. He urged students to make the
right choices.

HOUSTON (AP) - Hunter Pence homered and drove in three runs as
the Houston Astros completed a four-game sweep of the Philadelphia
Phillies with a 4-3 win yesterday over the NL East leader. The
Phillies begin a new series against the Washington Nationals down
in the nation's capital tonight.

HOUSTON (AP) - J.A. Happ was unable to make his start for the

22 games this season before he was moved to the bullpen Aug. 10.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Chicago Cubs assured the Pittsburgh
Pirates of a record-breaking 17th consecutive losing season,
winning 4-2 yesterday. The Pirates will finish below .500, just as
they have every season since 1993. The string of losing seasons is
a major league record and the longest for any team in the four
major North American pro team sports.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Rookie free safety Victor 'Macho' Harris
took snaps with the first-team defense Monday, a strong indication
he's beaten out second-year pro Quintin Demps for the starting spot
with the Philadelphia Eagles. Demps was considered the favorite to
replace longtime starter Brian Dawkins, who signed with Denver in
free agency.

BENSALEM, Pa. (AP) - Gone Astray and jockey Eddie Castro bided
their time until the field turned for home and then charged to a
9 1/4-length win in the $1 million Pennsylvania Derby at Philadelphia
Park yesterday. The 3-year-old colt and his veteran rider beat
seven rivals in the 30th running of the 1 1/8-mile race that is the
track's signature event.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Joe Paterno will start another

the Penn State sideline. Paterno is entering his 60th season at

of Fame coach says he's excited after spending most of last season
in the press box with a sore hip.

for all the yardage they lost when their most proficient
underclassman running back turned pro after only two seasons.
LeSean McCoy now plays for the Philadelphia Eagles. So the Pitt
Panthers are largely relying on Dion Lewis and Ray Graham. The
Panthers open up Saturday against Youngstown State.

will fight in Pittsburgh for the second time in about three months
on Sept. 30.No opponent has been named for the fight, which will

CINNATI (AP) - The Cincinnati Reds beat the Pittsburgh
Pirates 6-3 to complete a doubleheader sweep that drew the two
smallest crowds in Great American Ball Park's history. Brandon
Phillips hit one homer and had another overturned after a review
last night. The Reds took the opener 4 -3. Both teams play again in
Cincinnati tonight.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates have called up
right-hander Daniel McCutchen to start the first game of a makeup
doubleheader against the Cincinnati Reds. He went 13-6 with a 3.47
ERA in 24 starts at Triple-A Indianapolis. The Pirates also
optioned infielder Brian Bixler to Triple-A.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies were off last
night. They're back in action again tonight to host the San
Francisco Giants. Closer Brad Lidge has been struggling this season
with nine blown saves. The Phillies are hoping he can turn it
around as the season winds down in September. Lidge threw perfect
innings on Friday and Saturday

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Police in Philadelphia are investigating the
disappearance of a World Series championship ring at the Phillies'
ballpark. The owner, a member of the Phillies marketing department,
says he discovered that the ring was missing after he used the
bathroom at Citizens Bank Park yesterday. It's valued between
$11,500 and $15,000.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Kevin Kolb is getting to start at
quarterback in the Eagles' final preseason game. Coach Andy Reid
says Kolb will start Thursday's game against the New York Jets at
the Meadowlands and Michael Vick will play in the first half.
Donovan McNabb, running back Brian Westbrook and many of
Philadelphia's other starters will not play.
