PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Andrej Meszaros scored in overtime to lift
the Philadelphia Flyers to a 4-3 win over the New York Islanders
last night. Mike Richards, Jeff Carter and James van Riemsdyk also
scored goals for the Flyers. The Flyers downed the Islanders for a
12th straight time in Philadelphia.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Fourth-ranked Pittsburgh downed West Virginia
last night, 71-58, with Lamar Patterson scoring the first five
point of the second half and sparking a decisive run for the
Panthers. Nasir Robinson also scored 15 in Pitt's win. The Panthers
improved to 25-3 and are two wins ahead of Notre Dame at the top of
the Big East standings.

EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) - Penn State downed Northwestern last night,
66-52, with Talor Battle becoming the first Big Ten player to reach
2,000 career points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists. Jeff Brooks led
the Nittany Lions with 20 points for the night. Penn State improved
to 15-12 with the win.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Forward Alex Kovalev is again a Penguins after
Pittsburgh acquired him from the Ottawa Senators for a conditional
draft pick. The deal announced yesterday was Pittsburgh's second in
four days as the Penguins try to shore up their banged-up lineup.
Kovalev played for the Pens from 1998 through the 2002-3 season.

PITTSBUGH (AP) - Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik will miss from
four to six weeks with a broken finger on his right hand. Coach Dan
Bylsma updated Orpik's status as the team was hitting the road.
Orpik was hurt in the first period against San Jose earlier this
week when he was struck in the hand by a puck. The Penguins face
the Carolina Hurricanes tonight.

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (AP) - Gary Wallace scored five points during
a key run allowing Robert Morris to pull away from Mount St. Mary's
last night in a 65-57 win. Wallace finished with 9 points in the
win for the Colonials. Velton Jones added 12 points while Russell
Johnson and Lijah Thompson scored 10 apiece.

LORETTO, Pa. (AP) - Will Felder scored a career-high 30 points
and pulled down 13 rebounds to lead St. Francis past Wagner last
night, 84-78. The Red Flash used a 22-11 run in the second half to
open up their advantage on Wagner. St. Francis improved to 9-19
with the win.

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - Drew Naylor was on the mound -- not one
of the Phillies frontline pitchers -- but even so the Phillies were
dominant yesterday afternoon as they blanked Florida State 8-0.
Seven pitchers, starting with Naylor, combined on a four hitter.
Ryan Howard hit a two-run double in the first inning of the win.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Holy Family University basketball coach John
O'Connor has resigned following a conflict with former player Matt
Kravchuk, according to one of the school's players. The decision
came after O'Conner found out that he would not face criminal
charges over the incident. Kravchuk told police he was grabbed and
elbowed in the face by O'Connor -- resulting in a bloody nose and
bruised lip.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phoenix's Shane Doan scored an overtime
power-play goal and the Coyotes beat the Flyers in Philadelphia 3-2
last night. Doan put a shot past Sergei Bobrovsky at 2:41 of the
overtime forced when Claude Giroux tied the game with just over a
minute left in regulation. Despite the loss, the Flyers still lead
Tampa Bay by eight points in the East.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Penguins' two newest additions
have been grounded by a snowstorm. James Neal and Matt Niskanen
missed yesterday's practice, a day after they were dealt to the
Pens by Dallas. Their flight to Pittsburgh was diverted to New
Jersey. Coach Dan Bylsma says both should still make their debuts
tonight against San Jose.

CINCINNATI (AP) - Jeff Robinson scored a career-high 22 points
as 25th-ranked Xavier rolled past La Salle last night, 100-62. Tu
Holloway finished one rebound short of a third career
triple-double. Tyreek Duren scored 18 points to lead the Explorers,
who have lost three straight to fall to 12-16.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State guard Talor Battle is
approaching another milestone in his college career -- needing just
three assists to become the first Big Ten player to have 2,000
points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists for his career. Penn State
faces Northwestern tomorrow night with a victory crucial if the
Nittany Lions have any hope of making the NCAA tournament.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - After a 16-1 start to the season, Villanova
has gone 5-6 in a repeat of last season's late swoon in the Big
East. The Wildcats face the possibility they could drop their last
three games -- all against ranked opponents. The first of the
three, 23rd ranked St. John's comes on Saturday.

CHESTER, Pa. (AP) - The Philadelphia Union has signed Guatemalan
forward Carlos Ruiz on a free transfer from the Greek club Aris.
Ruiz scored a league-leading 24 goals for the Los Angeles Galaxy in
2002, but over the last two-plus years has played with clubs in
Paraguay and Mexico. He scored three goals this season in the
Europa League.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Alex Ovechkin scored the lone goal while
Michal Neuvirth was perfect for a second straight game against the
Penguins for the Capitals in a 1-0 win last night. Neuvirth made 39
saves. Ovechkin blasted a 35-footer past Marc-Andre Fleury's right
shoulder in the second period.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Penguins have brought in
forward James Neal from the Dallas Stars along with defenseman Matt
Niskanen, in exchange for offensive defenseman Alex Goligoski. Neal
is in his third NHL season. The Penguins are down nine regulars to
injuries, including to captain Sidney Crosby, who is dealing with
post-concussion syndrome.

PHILADELPPHIA (AP) - Two Philadelphia products, Rich Jackson and
Scoop Jardine, combined for 38 points and led 17th-ranked Syracuse
to a 69-64 win over number 15 Villanova last night. Corey Stokes
returned from missing three games from a turf toe injury to lead
the 21-7 Wildcats with 24 points, including five 3-pointers.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia Holy Family has suspended men's
basketball coach John O'Connor after he was accused of pushing,
kicking and injuring a player at practice. Video of the January
incident hit the Internet, with O'Connor shown shoving sophomore
Matt Kravchuk to the ground and kicking him during a 1-on-1 drill.

UNDATE (AP) - In a shaken-up college men's basketball poll,
Pittsburgh finds itself in exactly the same spot as last week, at
number 4. Villanova is ranked 15th, while Temple dropped one spot
to number 24. Duke has moved into the top spot, followed by Ohio
State and Kansas.

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels is enjoying
being just another one of the guys -- albeit in a star-studded
pitching rotation. From the Phillies' ace just a couple years ago,
Hamels is now considered the number 4 starter, but that's fine with
the lanky left-hander -- when the three ahead of him have three Cy
Youngs, 12 All-Star appearances and six 20-win seasons between
them.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ramone Moore scored 24 while Juan Fernandez
added 20 to lead number 23 Temple past Richmond, 73-53, last night.
The Owls used a 16-0 run to win their 20th straight home game. The
Owls continue to chase Xavier for the Atlantic 10 title.

STATE COLLEGE, Pas. (AP) - Penn State is doing what it can to
keep its March Madness hopes alive, downing Minnesota last night,
66-63. Talor Battle scored 28 points in the win, while David
Jackson scored 13 along with five rebounds. Penn State led most of
the game but Minnesota went up by three with just over two minutes
left before the Nittany Lions went on an 8-0 run to take back the
lead.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Jantel Lavender scored 23 points with 11
rebounds, while Samantha Prahalis added 21 points and 11 assists as
Ohio State downed number 23 Penn State in Columbus, 89-67, last
night. Jhaque Gray and Mia Nickson had 14 points for the Lady
Lions, who fell to 21-7, 10-4 in the Big Ten.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) - While the Phillies new starting rotation
has drawn descriptions as perhaps one of the best ever, what do
their rivals the Atlanta Braves think. If they're worried,
Atlanta's not letting on. The Braves say they have a pretty good
rotation of their own -- including Tim Hudson, Derek Lowe, Jair
Jurrjens and Tommy Hanson, who is considered one of baseball's more
promising youngsters.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle, who is
also a dog owner and animal rights advocate says he stands by his
recent comment to MLB.com that he would watch the Eagles hoping
that Michael Vick would get hurt. Buehrle was asked about the
comments as he reported to spring training yesterday.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - NHL commissioner Gary Bettman refuses to get
into a public debate, he says, with Mario Lemieux over league
discipline. The Penguins owner earlier this week said the NHL
failed in its punishment of the New York Islanders following a
fight-filled game between the teams. Bettman says he respects
Lemieux, but says the league is comfortable with the way it
responded.

HACKENSACK, N.J. (AP) - Lijah Thompson scored 16 points to lead
Robert Morris over Fairleigh Dickinson, 74-50, last night. Karon
Abraham added 12 points for the Colonials, who evened their record
at 13-13. The Knights have lost 10 straight and 19 of their last 20
contests.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Notre Dame and Temple have agreed to a
three-game series starting in 2014. The two teams have never played
each other on the football field. The Owls will host the Fighting
Irish in 2014, while Temple will travel to South Bend, Indiana, the
following year. The date and site for the third game has yet to be
determined.

ATLANTA (AP) - A Pirates fan who lives in Georgia is suing the
Atlanta Braves after he says rowdy fans attacked him at Turner
Field in 2008, knocking out 11 teeth and breaking his jaw. The
Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Elmer "Bobby" Collins is
seeking to be reimbursed for thousands of dollars in medical costs.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - A necktie worn by Joe Pa the night he
won his 400th career game has earned $10,200 for Penn state Public
Broadcasting. The Nittany Lions coach was wearing the tie November
6th with a win over Northwestern. The brownish-red tie with paisley
prints was auctioned off last week.

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Williamsport's Market Street Bridge
over the Susquehanna River could soon be renamed after Carl Stotz,
who started Little League in 1939 in the city. The Williamsport
Sun-Gazette reports state Senator Gene Yaw hopes to introduce a
proposal next week to rename the span. Stotz passed away in 1992.

to 19-6-3 -- tops in the NHL. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 32 shots in
goal to get the win.

HOUSTON (AP) - Jrue Holiday scored 20 points but he had plenty
of help as the 76ers rallied from an early deficit to beat the

in double-figures in the win with Lou Williams and Thaddeus Young
scoring 19 points apiece. It was the Sixers' third straight win in
Houston.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Nasir Robinson and Brad Wanamaker each scored
13 points and 4th-ranked Pittsburgh was able to pull away in the
final 10 minutes to beat South Florida last night, 67-55. The

wasn't as easy as they might have expected, with the Bulls within a
point of the Panthers in the second half. Pitt improved to 24-2.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Mark Lyons scored 24 points while Kenny
Frease had a double-double and number 24 Xavier downed Saint
Joseph's last night, 74-54. The Musketeers used a 12-1 run in the

improved to 19-6 and is in first place in the Atlantic 10.

AMHERST, Mass. (AP) - Five Duquesne players scored in double
figures, led by Bill Clark's 16 points, as Duquesne cruised to an
81-63 win last night over Massachusetts. Duquesne ended a two-game
skid with the win and has won 12 of its last 14 games. Jesse Morgan
led UMass with 14 points.

EASTON, Pa. (AP) - Bryson Johnson scored 30 points but Bucknell
needed overtime to down Lafayette, 74-69, in Easton last night. The
Bison led by 11 with 4:35 left in regulation but then didn't score
again until overtime as Johnson missed a 3-pointer at the end of
regulation. Jim Mower led Lafayette with 19 points.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - Mike Venezia scored 11 of his career-high
27 points in overtime as Colgate outlasted Lehigh 94-90 last night.
The Raiders opened the extra period with a 12-1 run to lead by 11
with 54 seconds to play. C.J. McCollum scored 31 points and had 15
rebounds and five steals for the Mountain Hawks.

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - Former Phillies manager Dallas Green,
who led the team to their first World Series title in 1980, is in
Clearwater, Florida, and back to baseball after losing his
nine-year-old granddaughter in January's Arizona shooting rampage.
Green spoke to reporters yesterday, thanking people for their
support and reflecting on the girl he called his "Princess."

CHICAGO (AP) - Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick has
decided he won't appear on "The Oprah Winfrey Show." A show
spokesman says representatives for Vick called late Tuesday to
cancel his appearance for person reasons. The interview was to
cover Vick's time in prison for dogfighting along with his return
to the NFL.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The Grizzlies got a big second half from
Mike Conley to beat the Philadelphia 76ers last night in Memphis,
102-91. Conley scored all 22 of his points after the intermission.
Thaddeus Young led the 76ers with 23 points, while Lou Williams
added 18 off the bench and Elton Brand scored 13.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - The Flyers' Kimmo Timonen scored in the
seventh round of a shootout last night as Philadelphia beat the
Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3. The Eastern Conference-leading Flyers
improved to 18-6-3 on the road this season. Tampa Bay now trails
the Flyers by five points in the East.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Freshman James Bell more than doubled his
career high with 21 points and 15th-ranked Villanova ended a
two-game losing skid with a 60-57 win over Seton Hall last night.
Bell was the offensive star for the Wildcats, who committed 22
turnovers -- double their season average. Corey Stokes missed a
second straight game with a turf toe injury.

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - While the focus has been the Phillies
starting rotation as spring training gets under way in Florida, the
Phillies also are entering the new season having to fill the hole
left when Jayson Werth left via free agency. He went to Washington
for a seven-year, $126 million contract. Rookie Domonic Brown is
considered the longterm answer for the spot but analysts suggest he
could platoon with Ben Francisco.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Eagles have put the franchise tag on
quarterback Michael Vick, although it remains to be seen what that
will mean with the current collective bargaining agreement set to
run out next month. The Eagles also put the transitional tag on
kicker David Akers, with coach Andy Reid saying both were two of
the team's most valuable players last year.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Innovative is how a lot of people describe
first-year Pittsburgh coach Todd Graham, but Graham says he just as
much old-school. He's working to modernize the program -- for
instance making sure coaches are seen with iPads when they go into
homes on recruiting visits. He's also a disciplinarian -- insisting
on tucked-in shirts and 6 a-m "tour of duty" team workouts.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - As St. Joseph's takes on 24th-ranked Xavier
tonight, coach Phil Martelli will take the court with perhaps the
most inspirational walk-on of his career. Lenny Martelli Jr. -- no
relation to the Hawks coach -- was left paralyzed by a snowboarding
accident nearly a year ago. The teenager has survived surgery and
rehab and has started walking again with the aide of canes.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State has gotten a pledge of $1
million from a State college couple as it upgrades its hockey
program to Division I next year. The university says it will name
the main lobby of the school's new hockey arena after the Paul and
Nancy Silvis family. The couple is also leading a campaign to raise
another $10 million.

NEW YORK (AP) - The Pittsburg Penguins' long weekend ended with
a loss to the New York Rangers yesterday, 5-3. The Penguins were
without Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby because of injury, and Matt
Cooke and Eric Godard because of suspensions. Ryan Callahan had two
goals and an assist in the win for the Rangers, who snapped a
six-game losing skid.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jonathan Quick stopped 40 Flyers shots as
the Los Angeles Kings downed Philadelphia 1-0 yesterday -- the
first regulation win for the Kings in Philadelphia in nearly 18
years. A shot by Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger in the first
period hit the post, and they also failed to score during a
20-second 5-on-3 advantage in the second period.

NEW YORK (AP) - Penguins owner Mario Lemieux is blasting what he
says was the NHL's botched handling of the aftermath of Friday
night's Islanders' victory -- a game that saw 346 penalty minutes,
10 ejections, 15 fighting majors and 20 misconducts. Trevor Gillies
and Matt Martin both drew suspensions and the Islanders were hit
with a $100,000 fine, but Lemieux says the sanctions didn't go
nearly far enough.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - With 18 points from Maggie Lucas,
23rd-ranked Penn State scored the final six points to rally for an
80-77 victory at Indiana yesterday. The Hoosiers had a chance to
force overtime on their final possession but a buzzer-beating
jumper didn't drop. The Nittany Lions move to 21-6 with the win.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Tu Holloway scored 20 points and Dante Jackson
ties a career-high with 19 to pace Xavier past Duquesne yesterday,
71-63. Xavier overcame a slow start to come back and get the win.
It also puts the Musketeers in good position to win their fifth
straight regular-season Atlantic 10 championship. B.J. Monteiro led
Duquesne with 18 points.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - A weekend crash at Penn National in East
Hanover Township sent two jockeys to a hospital with minor
injuries. The Patriot-News of Harrisburg reports Vladimir Diaz and
Emilio Flores were trated and released following the spill, which
came as their horses headed into a turn. One of the horses,
Sleetingntexas, had to be put down because of her injuries.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Fired Pitt football coach Mike Haywood
has entered a court diversion program in Indiana for a domestic
battery charge that prompted his firing after just two weeks on the
job. Haywood admitted grabbing his son's mother at Haywood's home
on December 31st. A prosecutor says the victim wanted the
diversion, which specifies that Haywood do community service and
have a psychological evaluation.

fourth consecutive season in Philadelphia.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Former Pirates manager Chuck Tanner has died
at the age of 82. The Pirates said Tanner's family informed them of

Pirates rallied from a 3-1 series deficit to beat the Orioles for
the World Series championship.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jeff Carter and Danny Briere each scored a

Flyers will host the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Jordan Staal put in the winning goal with just
18 seconds left in overtime to lift the Pittsburgh Penguins to a
2-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings last night. Staal ripped a shot
past Jonathan Quick for his fourth goal. The Penguins have been
gutted by injury and played four callups plucked from the minors
yesterday morning.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby says
he expects to play again this season after suffering a concussion.
Crosby has missed 14 games this season after taking hits to the
head in successive games in early January. He says it's impossible
to know when he'll be able to play again.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Lykendra Johnson had 24 points and
pulled down 12 rebounds to help 11th-ranked Michigan state down

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Draymond Green had 15 points, 14
rebounds and 10 assists in a 75-57 win over Penn State last night,
becoming just the third Michigan State player to have a
triple-double. Penn State's Talor Battle scored 19 points and Jeff
Brooks had 15 points after missing a game with a dislocated right
shoulder.

NEW YORK (AP) - A granddaughter of the first president of the
Green Bay Packers was among the 400 fans forced to watch the game
from standing-room spots in Cowboys Stadium because their seats
weren't safe. In a letter to the NFL, Peggy Beisel-McIlwaine says
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones should never be allowed to host another

early but at one point pulled to within three as Temple missed 18
of its first 20 shots from the field after halftime.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Still playing without star Sidney Crosby, the
Pittsburgh Penguins dropped last night's game against the Columbus
Blue Jackets, 4-1, at the Consol Energy Center. No Penguins player
in the lineup had more than 10 goals. The Blue Jackets saw a goal
apiece from Rich Nash, Jakub Voracek, Samuel Pahlsson and Antoine
Vermette in the win.

ATLANTA (AP) - Elton Brand scored 13 of his 17 points in the
first half to give the 76ers an early 20-point lead against the
Hawks, and they were able to cruise to a 117-83 win in Atlanta last
night. Louis Williams, an Atlanta-area native, had 20 points to
lead six Philadelphia scorers in double figures.

PRINCETON, N.J. (AP) - Dan Mavraides came down with a crucial
rebound and hit a free throw with 4 seconds left in overtime as
Princeton edged Penn 62-59 last night. The Tigers got their seventh
straight win to improve to 17-4. The Quakers were led by Tyler
Bernardini, who scored 19 points in the loss.

PHOENIX (AP) - An arbitration panel decision could come today, a
day after the Pittsburgh Pirates and pitcher Ross Ohlendorf went
through baseball's first salary hearing of the year. Ohlendorf is
asking for just over $2 million while the Pirates argue he should
be paid $1.4 million. The right-hander went 1-11 last season with a
4.07 ERA in 21 starts.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - With a couple of additions and four other
moves, Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid has his coaching
staff completed. Johnnie Lynn was hired to be secondary/cornerbacks
coach while Bobby April Jr. was named defensive quality control
coach. David Culley, Doug Pederson, James Urban and Duce Staley
were promoted to new positions.

NEW YORK (AP) - Fans who lost their Super Bowl seats when
temporary seating sections weren't finished in time for the game
are getting a second option. The NFL initially said it would give
$2,400 to the roughly 400 affected fans, and then said fans would
also get tickets to next year's game. The league now says the fans
can choose to attend any future Super Bowl -- not just next year's.

DALLAS (AP) - Aaron Rodgers is the MVP of Super Bowl 45 after
throwing for 304 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in
the Green Bay Packers' 31-25 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Nick
Collins returned a Ben Roethlisberger (RAWTH'-lis-bur-gur)
interception 37 yards for a touchdown, and Greg Jennings had four
receptions for 64 yards and two TDs.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Steelers' Super Bowl loss made for a
sobering evening at Pittsburgh watering holes. Patrons at Peters'
Pub and other bars near the University of Pittsburgh campus mostly
walked out quietly. Police had put officers out in force yesterday,
hoping to prevent any recurrence of the rioting that followed the
Steelers' Super Bowl win two years ago.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Michal Neuvirth (NY'-vahrth) turned back 22
shots and Brooks Laich (lyk) provided the game-winner to lead the
Washington Capitals to a 3-0 shutout of Pittsburgh yesterday.
Marcus Johansson and Mike Knuble (kuh-NOO'-bul) also scored for the
Caps, who remain three points behind Tampa Bay for the NHL's
Southeast Division lead.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Penguins don't plan to have Evgeni Malkin
back this season. Malkin tore the ACL and MCL in his right knee
Friday night against Buffalo. Coach Dan Bylsma says surgery would
"definitely" rule Malkin out for the season, and Bylsma says he's
preparing as if Malkin won't return until next fall.

NEW YORK (AP) - Amare Stoudemire matched his season high with 41
points as the New York Knicks beat the Philadelphia 76ers 117-103
yesterday. Elton Brand had 28 points for the Sixers, who lost for
just the second time in their last eight. Philadelphia blew a
chance to move to within a game of New York for sixth place in the
Eastern Conference.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - Alex Bentley scored 25 points to help
Penn State to an 82-75 win over 20th-ranked Iowa yesterday.
Freshman reserve Maggie Lucas added 18 points in the win, including
four 3-pointers. The victory is the Nittany Lions' fourth straight
and moves them to 20-5, 9-2 in the Big Ten.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - A free throw by Vlad Moldoveanu with just
2 seconds on the clock gave American a 62-61 victory over Lehigh
yesterday. Moldoveanu was fouled by Lehigh's Jordan Hamilton after
coming down with an offensive rebound. C.J. McCollum led the
Mountain Hawks with 21 points in the loss.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Flyers managed to slip past
the Nashville Predators last night in a 3-2 win, with Ville Leino
scoring two goals, including the game winner with 3:16 left in the
game. Jeff Carter also scored for the Eastern Conference-leading
Flyers in the first contest of a four-game homestand.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - The Steelers were practicing indoors
for the Super Bowl yesterday. They set up shop at TCU's indoor
practice field, with some of the Horned Frogs' coaches and players
watching. Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey is questionable for the
game with his ankle injury suffered in the AFC championship game.
If he can't play, Doug Legursky would make his first NFL start at
center.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - Steelers linebacker James Harrison says
he's feeling better after venting about the NFL at the first few
Super Bowl media sessions. Harrison was fined $100,000 by the
league for illegal hits this season. He says that gave him
"100,000 reasons" to sound off. He also says he has no plans to
speak with commissioner Roger Goodell.

DALLAS (AP) - Packers receiver Donald Driver missed practice
yesterday with an injured thigh and likely will miss another
practice. Driver wanted to practice, but coach Mike McCarthy told a
pool reporter he wasn't taking any changes. Driver missed a full
game and parts of two others this season with the same injury.

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (AP) - Lijah Thompson put in 18 points and
Robert Morris had five players in double figures in last night's
91-38 rout of Bryant. Velton Jones scored 16 points while the
colonials held the Bulldogs to just 22.7 percent shooting for the
game. It was the second time this season Robert Morris had held a
team to less than 40 points.

LORETTO, Pa. (AP) - Robby Ptacek tied career and season highs in
getting 26 points as Central Connecticut State beat St. Francis
last night, 86-79. The Blue Devils managed to take the game despite
squandering nearly all of a 29-point first half lead. Umar Shannon
scored 27 points to lead the Red Flash, who posted a season-high 63
second-half points.

DALLAS (AP) - You can add franchise tags to the list of issues
the NFL and the players don't see eye-to-eye on. The league is
telling teams they can put the designation on players whose
contracts are expiring, even if there's no new labor agreement when
the current one ends in march. The union is telling players' agents
the NFL is wrong about that.

DALLAS (AP) - The Steelers may be the AFC champions but a survey
by the players union finds they have the worst grass field in the
NFL. Players evaluated what they saw as the top three fields.
University of Phoenix Stadium was ranked the best grass field,
while Indianapolis had the best artificial turf. Worst among
artificial turf fields was the Metrodome.

SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) - The former mascot for the
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees is suing the minor league team,
claiming they violated worker protection laws. Brian Bonner was
laid off last month from his job as Champ. He claims his title was
a manager but he did no supervisory tasks and often worked more
than 80 hours a week for about $22,000 a year. The team disputes
the allegations.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Penguins blanked the New York
Islanders for the second time in nine days, winning 3-0 on
Wednesday night. Pittsburgh has won four consecutive and seven of
eight - all without captain Sidney Crosby

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -Jrue Holiday had 11 points, 11 assists and 10
rebounds for his first career triple-double to lead the
Philadelphia 76ers to a 106-92 victory over the New Jersey Nets on
Wednesday night. Nets coach Avery Johnson was ejected for arguing a
non-call .

VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) -No. 12 Villanova snapped a two-game losing
streak with a 75-70 win over Marquette on Wednesday night. The
Wildcats had lost three of four and fell out of the Top 10.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Temple withstood a late rally by La Salle to
earn a 71-67 victory Wednesday night. The Owls won their third in a
row and snapped the Explorers' three-game winning streak. La Salle
made a late charge, but came up short.

DALLAS (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey sat
out practice Wednesday but still expects to play in the Super Bowl.
Pouncey's left ankle was sprained in the AFC championship game. He
hopes to practice Friday and called his chances of playing against
the Green Bay Packers 75 percent.

DALLAS (AP) - An outside labor lawyer for the NFL says the
league's owners are as unified right now as NHL owners were when
that sport lost an entire season to a lockout. Bob Batterman said
Wednesday that the owners of the NFL's 32 teams "know what's wrong
with the business today."

DALLAS (AP) - An arbitrator has denied a grievance by the NFL
Players Association that sought to make teams pay health insurance
premiums for active players after the current labor deal expires
March 3. Arbitrator Shyam Das ruled in the NFL's favor Wednesday.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Juan Castillo is the new defensive
coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles, the team announced on
Wednesday. The Eagles also added offensive line coach Howard Mudd
to Andy Reid's staff.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - The fuss about coach Joe Paterno's
future didn't prevent Penn State from making a late push on the
recruiting trail. A mad dash and a few timely decommitments by
prospects from schools with coaching upheaval helped the program
built by the 45-year veteran finish strong .

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Introduced as Pittsburgh's third head coach in
a five-week span on January 11, Todd Graham endured a frenzied
22-day span to salvage what he could of a fractured recruiting
class before Wednesday's national signing day. "It's been a very,
very unique three weeks," Graham said.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The son of Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy
Reid is one of 20 players sending their letters of intent to Temple
and first-year coach Steve Addazio. Spencer Reid, a 5-foot-10,
205-pound running back, is one of the commitments that Addazio will
build around. The Owls open spring practice on March 23.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) - Fans of the Green Bay Packers and
Pittsburgh Steelers tend to carry their passions for life. Babies
in Terrible Towels, pilgrimages to the graves of Lombardi or
Lambeau. On Sunday, two of the most rabid, far-reaching fan bases
in pro sports will follow the venerable franchises in the Super
Bowl in Dallas.

NEW YORK (AP) - A shootout goal by Dustin Jeffrey carried the
Pittsburgh Penguins to a 4-3 win over the New York Rangers last
night. Marc-Andre Fleury made 25 saves through overtime and stopped
all seven attempts against him in the shootout to outduel fellow
All-Star goalie Henrik Lundqvist, who turned aside 23 shots in the
loss.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - The Tampa Bay Lightning got a fourth shutout
from Dwayne Roloson to beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-0 last night.
The Lightning have won all three of their games against the Flyers
this season but still trail the Eastern Conference leaders by two
points in the NHL's Eastern Conference.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - With the crowd sparse thanks to a winter
storm, Illinois beat Penn State last night, 68-51. Mike Davis
scored 22 points for the Illini, including 10 on dunks. Penn State
falls to 12-9 with the loss. Tim Frazier and Talor Battle had 12
points apiece to lead the Nittany Lions.

CINCINNATI (AP) - La Salle's women were never in the game last
night against seventh-ranked Xavier, losing to the Musketeers
102-51 in Cincinnati. Xavier moved to 18-2 with the win to equal
its best start in school history. La Salle was led by Ashley Gale,
who scored 17 points before leaving the game with an injured left
ankle in the game's closing minutes.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Steelers receiver Hines Ward says it
would be a shame if games are lost next season because the NFL and
players can't get a new labor deal. The old deal expires in early
March with the union expecting owners to lock out players. Ward
also doesn't like the proposal to expand the regular season to 18
games, saying proponents aren't thinking about players' safety.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh will have 400 extra police officers
on city streets Sunday night for the Super Bowl. Officials say much
of the extra manpower will be stationed in the city's Oakland and
South Side neighborhoods. Police plan to close the main street in
each area in an effort to keep traffic out and fans safe if and
when they spill into the streets after the game.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Pennsylvania businessman Terry Pegula has a
deal to buy the Buffalo Sabres. Terms were not released but The
Buffalo News reports the agreement includes $175 million for the
team along with an additional $14 million in liabilities. Coach
Lindy Ruff acknowledged yesterday he didn't accept the Sabres'
extension offer last fall but says he wants to stay with the team.

MIAMI (AP) - Dwyane (dwayn) Wade scored 26 of his 34 points in
the first half, LeBron James added 24 points and eight assists
against his former team and the Miami Heat beat Cleveland 117-90.
That's the Cavaliers' 21st straight loss.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - Upon arrival in Texas for Sunday's
Super Bowl, Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin says he is not
ruling out Pro Bowl center Maurkice (mahr-KEES') Pouncey for the
big game. The rookie is on crutches with a high ankle sprain
suffered in the Steelers' victory over the Jets in the AFC
Championship game and his status for the game will be decided later
in the week.

DALLAS (AP) - Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy
half-jokingly apologized for bringing frigid Packers weather to
Dallas where cold conditions with a chance of light snow is
forecast for the Dallas area this week. The hardy Packers may even
practice indoors this week at a local high school, depending on the
weather.

DALLAS (AP) - Pittsburgh safety Troy Polamalu (poh-luh-MAH'-loo)
has won The Associated Press 2010 NFL Defensive Player of the Year
award, edging Green Bay linebacker Clay Matthews. Polamalu received
17 votes from a nationwide panel of 50 media members who cover the
league, edging Matthews by two votes.
